Combined from the Japanese words Rei, meaning “God’s wisdom, universal life, or higher power” and Ki, meaning “life force or energy,” Reiki is the healing practice of balancing our “universal life energy” around our bodies. Founded in the early twentieth century by Japanese Buddhist monk Mikao Usui with the underlying belief that our bodies have the natural ability to heal , Reiki transfers healing energy by using the placement of hands to blocked areas.

Today I'm reviewing In Focus - Reiki - Your Personal Guide by Des Hynes. Generally I like to start out with a disclaimer. I am an contemporary witch. I look for the connection between magic and science without the need to search for a creator. I receive no compensation for these reviews and all my links are standard Amazon links and not affiliate links. I am a practicing photo reader and have spent the last 16 years honing my craft. I offer personal readings by request and have a strong online history that boasts nearly 400,000 views.
I'll being with a review of the physical book. Overall a good sized book to toss in a bag or backpack for reading on the go. The cover is vibrant and colorful. The book includes a set of oversize cards in an envelope in the back cover that review the principals of Reiki. Over the years my work with Reiki, I have always kept a copy of the principals near where I can see them each day. Even if you do not work with Reiki, I find these to be a way to lift the spirit and help you manage a stressful day.
This book is dedicated to healing and after the brief introduction at the beginning the author delves directly into getting the reader up to speed on its fundamental use for this practice. Each chapter address specific areas of focus such as Common Causes of Illness as the very first chapter and then broadens into understand self healing from the physical to the spiritual realm.
Chapter four takes us directly into self healing. I mean we can't love anyone else if we can't love ourselves, right? Providing the steps for us to work to find the KI within ourselves this book offers meditations, mantras as well as tips and tricks to keep us on track in our Reiki practice. The author even provides personal stories called out to help us understand the process and fully come into our own as Reiki practitioners.
The chapter on healing others includes detailed illustrations to show exactly where each position would be and how we should be providing the connection to our clients be they adult, children or our furry friends. The principals of Reiki are amazing to me. I love the fact that we only deal in the here and the now. Just for today, I will let go of anger. We're not worried about the past, the past is gone. We're not worried about the future, it isn't here yet. Just for right now, right now I will let go of worry. We can bring these principals into all aspects of our lives as we even address doing our work honestly, just for today. While all are important the fifth, resonates with me on a personal level. Today I will be kind to every living creature. To me this speaks directly to not only the pets I have in my home but to what food I eat or what car I drive. I am vegan so I do my best not to harm any living creatures to the best of my ability. After all, how can you have a calm, centered life, if you are feeding on the suffering of others. No matter how big or small those others might be. The author continues with sections dedicated to the chakras and auras leading directly into angles and guides. While maybe not the go to for everyone, I found these sections to be highly enlightening and worth the time to read, even if you do not agree with specific language of the text. For example, some may not wish to work with angels due to their Christian influence however, I do not believe that it is necessary to always associate angels with a specific religion or deity. This book is filled with grids, inspirational quotes and antidotes as well as direct process for cleansing auras. Overall this is a great book for the beginner and offers some new ways of looking at Reiki for the seasoned pro. The addition of the cards in the back are a great way to focus on specific principals at a glance and still benefit from the authors experience with the subject.
An useful introduction to reiki and how to correctly apply it. Perfect for students of Shoden and Okuden (first and second level) to clarify basic questions and have a better understanding about what it is about and how it works.
Honest and in-depth advice for reaching your full potential. This advice is presented in easy to follow language that can be broken up and applied in pieces at a time.
Having wanted to know more about Reiki for a number of years I was thrilled to find this book! I learned more about the subject and training required to become a Reiki Master. With four levels to train for it would probably be wise to have someone to mentor or teach in the pursuit of taking this up as a healing practice.
The book begins by explaining what Holistic Healing is and how it treats mind, body and spirt. Itspeaks about the causes of illness and the importance or attuning one’s body. It gives a bit of history related to Reiki and lists the five Reiki principles – good for anyone to incorporate into their daily routine. Other topics in the book include chakras and channels, aura, healing across space and time, Reiki crystals, aura clearing and shamanic healing, personal practice of Reiki and even tips to those that might wish to pursue a business should they become Reiki healers.
Thank you to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group – Wellfleet Press for the ARC – This is my honest review.
This a great book to start your way to understanding Reiki. I found it to be a simple and easy read which I appreciated. The illustration were very well done
This book goes into detail about reiki is and what a reiki healer does. Basically, a reiki healer uses energy to heal the mind, soul, and body. The book goes on to describe that there are 4 levels of healers, and describes in detail each step. I learned a lot about reiki healing, and that you should go to a healer for healing. However there are things you can do to promote wellness and healing. It also works in conjunction with chakras. A very interesting read if you like to explore alternative healing.
I enjoyed this book. I learned about something I knew next to nothing about. This was a good read on what can be done with Reiki. It's a well written introduction to this form of healing.
I read this book via NetGalley. I thank them for this book. #InFocusReiki, #NetGalley
This was just a wonderful guide to the beginning of reiki. The cover of the book is absolutely stunning. The book explains what it is, the different degrees of reiki, chakras, auras, crystals, just a whole bunch of things. Everything is written in an easy to understand manner. There are colored backgrounds for some paragraphs throughout to draw attention to them, plus it's a nice pop on the page. The illustrations really keep the book engaging as well. I would recommend this book. a 5 out of 5 stars.
*I was given a free ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.*
In Focus Reiki does a great job of explaining what Reiki is and how it is used. I learned a lot and I would recommend this to anyone looking for information about what Reiki actually is.
Unfortunately this book didn't resonate with me. As a Reiki Practitioner myself, I felt the book was not clear that much of the content was about other modalities that are not reiki, and so the title seemed incongruous as well. I also felt the author made some statements that were then not explained or substantiated. There are much better books about reiki that do indeed focus on reiki itself. I would give this one a miss.
As a Reiki Practitioner myself, I was really interested in what the author has to say. I was delightfully pleased with the easy explanations and walk through of each component. It's a great book for beginners and those who want a simple explanation about Reiki and if it's right for them. The author covers all aspects like the history to different levels and what each level is able to do. It covers chakras, angels, guides, crystals, auras and much more and how they are incorporated into your practice. This is a great book if you want to get your feet wet and see if Reiki is right for you.
Thank you to Wellfleet Press and NetGalley for the advance reading copy in exchange for an honest review.
I’ve never read anything on the subject, but i was really interested on learning a little bit about the way this works. Energy healing and being in touch with an unexplored side of the medicine -at least for me- was a cool way to expend my time. I feel like I now understand a little better, but still have way too much to learn.
I just got into spirituality and this book really helps me to learn about my reiki and chakras. I can understand more about myself and how to meditate and enjoy life. This book has a lot of information and guidance. I’m glad I read it.
The proliferation of "add-ons" made this otherwise good introduction to Reiki problematic for me. Reiki is powerful in its subtlety that got lost among the crystals, auras and the discussions of so much New Agey non-Reiki practices.
It's a modern approach to learning all there is to know about Reiki.
In Focus Reiki is very well done and easy to understand and follow. It teaches you how to tap into your inner healing powers to reduce stress, depression, anxiety, and physical pain in yourself and others.
This book provides a good introduction to Reiki, it explains almost everything you need to know. Even if you are a certified Reiki practitioner, reading about it from other practitioners at the beginning of your Reiki journey is definitely beneficial.
I loved this book. I didn't know a lot about Reiki, so it was cool to learn about the symbols and the different level. I'm definitely going to read more on it !
As someone who is just beginning in my Reiki journey this book was wonderful. I truly appreciated how I’m depth it was while still being relatable. This was a very simple read in a good way.
I was very interested in reading this book to get a better understanding of what Reiki is. My son has his third degree Reiki and is currently working on his forth. I am fascinated by the healing benefits of Reiki and how it is performed. In Focus Reiki by Des Hynes was a fantastic source of information and inspired me to know more about this form of medicine. I am not interested in becoming a Reiki Master practitioner, but being able to apply the basic Reiki healing techniques to myself and to my pets will be something I will focus on.
If you are interested to know more about Reiki, this book is a great starting point. The instructions and illustrations are well appointed and provide the right amount of information to get you on your way to better living.
Thank you NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group for giving me a copy of this inspiring book. In Focus Reiki is now available at your favourite bookstore.
Enjoyed reading this book, nice introduction - coming from someone who hasn't read much on the topic. Introduces reader to different topics like the 4 degrees of Reiki (which get their own chapter), what it is, history of it and other topics. There were a few sentences I am fond with. There is a line that the author tells the reader one would need to learn more before they say they know what they are doing (in Reiki) - which I think is understandable. I am not seeing a bibliography - so no resources for the reader to continue on.
A great introduction to Reiki for beginners , I like the fact it’s very responsible and advises to seek medical advice for illnesses etc and does advice its to be used in conjunction with western medicine. It’s a well presented book, written in plain English easy to understand and bright attractive illustrations that compliment the book well. Helpful guide for the beginner interested in reiki
Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for a free copy for an honest opinion
This book is a great starting point to know more about the Reiki healing practice.Founded in the twentieth century by a Japanese Buddhist monk, Mikao Usui, Reiki has become popular in the Western world and it has attracted huge crowds..
'In Focus Reiki' describes in a very easy way the basics of Reiki:who is a healer, the different levels of training in order to learn the practice, the basic self-healing and also a briefly mention of the chakras among the various subjects. I loved the brief anecdotes in every chapter, real personal stories from Reiki masters and practitioners, the tips and the colorful illustrations. There are also seven illustrated cards to help with meditations and a quick-to go reference guide.
A great book for beginners and for anyone interested in knowing more about this sacred healing practice.
Thanks to the publisher and to NetGalley for this ARC in exchange of my personal and honest opinion.
