I've read this guide twice so far, and expect to return to it in the months leading up to our trip. With the help of this book, we've narrowed down which parts of the park to spend days exploring, and which campgrounds to call home for eight days in July. Most importantly, we feel better informed about and prepared for potential wildlife encounters.
The book is divided into helpful sections, with a minimum of repetitive information, and it's written in a clear, straightforward, friendly voice without wasted words.
We found this book useful. We used it in conjunction with a hiking trail specific book (National Geographic's Hiking Glacier National Park), and between the two of them we planned a good trip.
I'm rating this four stars because the book succeeds at what it tries to do, which is to provide an offline resource for vacation planning in these parks and surrounding areas. That being said, it's not at all a replacement for the maps you get in the park or the detailed hike/stay/restaurant reviews you can find online, which are more detailed and up-to-date.
It was absolutely worth it for me in the "I want to go to Glacier but I've never been there and I don't know what to do or where to say" phase of my vacation planning. It was especially useful in terms of creating a short list of hikes to take in Glacier, but that was also supplemented with online "best hikes in GNP" lists as well. So I'd certainly recommend it for Glacier newbies but only as "part of this nutritious breakfast" of vacation planning along with online reviews.
No color pictures except for a small 6-page section at the front of the book. A LOT of words on each page. A huge amount of information but not much fun to read. I hope the May 2019 update will be better.
I didn't read the book cover to cover. However, I perused the entire book and read about the places I would be going and then the general information about GNP. A great book for anyone planning a trip. GNP is stunning!
Since we haven't gone yet, I don't know how helpful this will be. Good maps are included. I am hopeful the information on businesses and restaurants are still accurate.
I purchased this book to help on hikes on my recent trip to Glacier. I found their laid out itineraries helpful as well as the sections of sights to see, driving tips, highlights, etc. I paired this book with another to help decide which day hikes to take. I think we had a good, fun-filled trip.
Good stuff. Just read about Waterton and the Flathead Valley, though quite a long time after our trip there (August earlier this year [2009:]). I'm already ready to return.
