Before reading this book, everything I knew about Henry VIII was from the movie "The Other Boleyn Girl". This was a fascinating insight into all of Henry's wives and mistresses, as well as the odd things Henry himself did, and choices he made.
I enjoyed this book, although I am very familiar with the stories of Henry VIII's wives. I found it very interesting. However, someone needs to go through and edit this book. The grammatical errors were atrocious. Additionally, someone needs to check their history. Many many dates were wrong. Wrong as the dates listed for some events were after the person had already died. Really needs to be checked.
Kindle Unlimited, this one goes decent enough, if you wanted a pair to read back to back or of same kind, with the Marie Antoinette one btw, that's really why I keep a running list, it's helpful for other people to see the full list {minus some of the collections so don't repeat/make longer} but so I can keep up with sections/areas/time periods etcetera, gets confusing, have read every single one of them

plent of sets/combo books, the list was getting WAY too long so trying to shorten it a bit
I’ve never been a nonfiction reader but I love history, so I’m giving it a try. But it’s got to be a book that’s 1. Of a subject I like 2. Not written like a school textbook. I’ve tried a few recently because I’ve been needing a quick fiction break, and this is the first one I finished and really enjoyed like any other book. It’s not too long and the writing was really enjoyable, and from what I already know of the subject it seemed accurate and didn’t confuse me with contradictions. Also King Henry VIII’s life is about as dramatic as any fictional story I’ve read, which helped a lot. Gonna try some more!
I've read about Henry VIII before and seen various television programs on him but I was still able to learn things I didn't know from this book.
Basically, Henry VIII was a brilliant and fairly decent person until after he was injured in a jousting tournament. It's possible, my speculation here, is that he suffered some brain damage and that, not being able to joust or be really physically active any more plus his normal problems as king may have all worked together to change his personality so that beheading wives was not utterly unexpected.
The book discusses all six of his wives, how they met, what happened during their marriage and how the marriage ended. It also goes into how Henry VIII broke with the Catholic Church, what men were behind the scenes making moves to benefit themselves and how Henry VIII had a tendency to go after ladies-in-waiting, shopping for his next bride. It also covers the moves he made to get rid of the wives he was tired of.
It also discusses the infidelity that he practiced so much. It also covers his various mistresses and children that were or might have been born from those relationships. Although Henry VIII was an intelligent man his morals were quite lax.
It always amazes me that I learn something new by reading these histories even when I thought I knew everything about the subject at hand (before I started). I've read several tomes about Henry Vlll and his six wives but this weaves new information into the Tudor history. There was even room to discuss Henry's mistresses and the machinations and behind-the-scenes action of the secondary characters in this soap opera. It is highly readable and I read it in one sitting.
I thought the presentation was balanced and the explanations were lively. I liked that the author took the time to explain which of the wives took time to include Elizabeth and Mary. Probably without their intervention, Henry wouldn't have cared a whit about either child. He was so obsessed with getting a son that he didn't value the two daughters he did have. The reader also gets a sense of the difference between each of Henry's wives -- they were certainly different from each other.
Something that sets this book apart from others is that this book researched the children thought to be Henry's through his mistresses. From some of the info presented, it almost seemed that the legitimate kids knew (and helped along) the illegitimate kids. The discussion on the possible reasons for Henry's infertility was fascinating. I'd like to share one particularly telling statement about Henry, "This forethought (how Henry chose each wife) perhaps shows the emotional side of Henry Vlll that was forever searching for the right woman with whom to make the kind of family his own mother and father had." (p. 94)
The six wives of Henry VIII in just over 100 pages! I was a bit sceptical to begin with that this would be able to do justice at about 17 pages per wife. We've seen all of the series, the films and worked through the story at school - would there be much more to garner from such a short piece of work covering six people? Surprisingly, the answer was yes. I thought that I was fairly knowledgeable about this part of history above many other areas, however I soon realised that I had more to learn.
This book gathers fact upon fact about a short period of time in history that still seems to fascinate people of all ages today. The sections are all easy to follow, but the names of prominent people soon mount up and are easy to forget when they have no character to go with them. Still, this is a factual book and not an historical novel.
I enjoyed reading it and will re-read it a few more times yet. My favourite part was right at the end where there was a section highlighting the recognised and non-recognised offspring belonging to Henry. No stone appears to have been left unturned.
This was a short but informative read on a topic I've recently become interested in: the Tudor reign and legacy. Memorialized in the tony-award winning musical, Six, the wives of Henry VII are described concisely and with information that keeps you captivated-with chapters short enough to be read in a few minutes, but with enough information to have you spending hours on Google looking up additional information. this book gives a concise and informative look into Henry and his six famous wives-as well as some of his more famous mistresses. This book lead me to more information as I researched other events and figures who were mentioned-an internet rabbit hole, if you will. A great short read for the history lover.
This book gives all the major points of the history with grace and understanding. It lets each woman be her own and doesn't define them by Henry but let's them define themselves. My heart breaks for each of these women, but also for Henry.
Painted in a very humanistic and understanding way, but backed by solid research. Worthy read.
A fairly quick account of the six wives of Henry VIII Short and to the point and no new insights If you want a basic account of Henry then this is the book for you!
After reading the Hillary Mantel trilogy, I wanted to read more about the real queens. This book tells all, in an easy to understand way. It also goes on to describe the possible illegitimate heirs too.
This was well written, and gave a lot of information that anyone in who enjoys Tudor history would find interesting. This book handled controversial topics well, casting all six women in a positive light. This book balanced bias and facts well. Great ready for anyone interested in the Tudor period.
A good overview of the wives of Henry VIII. I enjoyed reading the brief summaries on his wives and learning the background on their marriages. If you would like a quick overview, I would recommend this quick read.
Being as interested in this part of history this was a good dive into the wives of Henry VIII. There were parts I wished there was a deeper dive into the information. But overall it was a well written and informative.
Although I did not learn very much new there were surprises and this book kept me interested from the beginning to the end. If you are newly interested in Henry's wives this is a great starting point
I enjoyed reading this non exhaustive version of king Henry’s wives. Just enough information to help me connect their backstories to historical context. Thank you!
