A Post-Apocalyptic Survival series

What would you do to survive?

Ben, Joel, Allie and their dog, Gunner, have faced down foes of all descriptions in their odyssey across the EMP ravaged country in search of their families.

Now as they approach the final leg of their journey the stakes are raised. With no way of knowing what danger lurks ahead, they encounter a new and never ending gauntlet of challenges and threats. Their ability to work as a team is tested anew, and they realize survival in this new world will require them all to make sacrifices.

Joel and Allie are forced to grow up fast in a world that offers little forgiveness for mistakes. Will the physical and mental demands be too much for them to handle? Will Ben’s Army training and survival skills get them through and allow them to reunite with family?

Or will this be the last road they travel together?

Loved it.

Love this series. Just hate to have to wait for the next in the series, which is the best compliment I can give.

The characters are immediately likeable. The story is realistic without being overly dark or overly optimistic. Plus, there are relatively few typos. Can't wait to see what happens next.

LOVE THIS SERIES!!!

This is such a great series thAt really pulls you in,grabs on tight, & doesn't let go ! The ONLY thing that I don't like is that the length of the books aren't long at all... Like I can read one every day of i didn't have anything else to do ..... And now that I've read the last one released , I have to wait (impatiently) until the next one is released! But it'll be worth the wait. Trust me when I say this one is going to be your new favorite!!

Even when you combine all five books, the book is pretty short.

We will start with more general overview stuff. The MC, his son, his son's GF, and their dog are essentially the core characters in this book. They experience basically zero character development throughout the entire book (despite the book claiming the kids have "grown"). Nothing bad ever truly happen to the characters. Any conflict is resolved just like that. Any trouble they get into is solved without much effort.

The author also does basically no world building at all. All information about how the EMP happened is kept to a minimum so he doesn't need to create a believable narrative. The book is set in the real world but the author eliminates any form of local, state, and federal government entity so he does not need to do any believable world building. It honestly started to come off as lazy and someone that done little to no research. It is very clear the author wrote a post apocalyptic world without researching how EMPs work, how realistically would society fall apart including a believable break down of various government, backup supplies that various people and organization have, etc. You know... the basics of writing a post apocalyptic world?!?

The general vibe from the book is that it is written by someone with a bone to pick with the state society but does not actually have a very good grasp on the state of society. It felt more like a wet dream of some guy struggling to fit into society in a prosocial manner imagining how independent and powerful he would be when society magically collapses.

With that said, let's jump into some glaring issues in this book that combines the lack of research and poor understanding of modern society.

1. The story hinged on EMPs but the author, despite his military background, has an extremely poor understanding of EMPs.

While electronics close to the EMP detonation, especially larger electronics, would be severely damaged and knocked out of commission, a significant amount of electronics would actually survive. Anything outside a 150 mile radius from the detonation that is (a.) under a metal roof or (b.) in a concrete building has an extremely high chance to be completely unaffected. 150 miles is also being very generous, it likely would be much smaller.

Another important premise in this book is that the EMP knocks out the vast majority of vehicles in the US because modern cars all rely on electronics while super old car did not. But, a quick research will bring up an article by the EMP commission. The commission tested 37 cars model dating from 1986 - 2002. Guess how many cars were able to run after exposure to EMP? 36 out of 37 cars. The commission concludes that any car model 2000 or older will run fine. Would you like to guess how many cars are model than 2000 and registered in 2024? 29.8 million. Those are only registered cars. Remember, cars in concrete garages or in garages with metal roof could be protected too. What about unregistered cars... this is the Land of the Free, we all know there are ton of unregistered cars out there. Also, a study conduct by Stanford found that EMP actually wouldn't even knock out more modern cars because the metallic construction of the cars itself could act as protection. Yes, most cars are basically semi rolling faraday cages. Nuclear power plants are also hardened against EMP. While not widely implemented, a decent number of power stations in the US are hardened/have protections against EMP (remember, we were once very worried about this problem).

Minor possible spoiler: North Korean is the country responsible for launching the nukes that cause the EMP. I will not address how unbelievable that is. But, it was made clear the US government was aware and making preparation for EMP attack for years. Yet, when the attack happens the entire government just disappears. By the way, EMP hardening is actually extremely easy. Especially for organization with the vast resources like the US military, US government, or multi billion dollar corporations. Most computers that are hardened would just need a quick reboot and they will be completely functional.

2. The speed at which society collapse is unbelievable.

I truly believe the author did this so he did not have to spend any time world building. This also allows him to quickly paint a grim picture of what a sad state society is for crumbling so quickly. This required two key ingredients, (a.) the absence of any form of government, somehow, and (b.) the lack of supply, especially food and water.

Let's start with (a.). In the book, society literally just collapses right after the EMP. somehow, local police, government, state government, federal government all just disappeared the second the EMPs happened. Society just crumbles into instant looting and pillaging which makes no sense at all.

This brings me to (b.). People would likely resort to looting once supply starts running low or out. In a study done in 2018, the average American household store about a week to two weeks worth of food and 3-10 days worth of water. A study in 2021 and 2023 found American household had increase their stockpile of emergency food and water supply after the COVID-19 pandemic. This entire book last about 10 days from the day the EMPs detonated. Realistically, the vast majority of American household would have likely just started running out of food...

3. The author really hates people in the big city.

Multiple times throughout the book the author talks about how unprepared people in the city would be with their comfy lives. How people in rural area would do much better because of how rough their usual lives are. One big thing he talked about is how water supply/system would halt in the cities but people in rural areas would be fine. Well, wrong again. The vast majority of people in the US relies on electrical pumps to pump water into their house. If the author's imaginary super power EMPs were to knock out all electronics, I would guess 95+% of people would not have water supply anymore unless they had their own generators. Which granted, yes, many people in rural areas have backup generators. But guess what? Many government and large buildings in the city have backup generators too. In fact, hospitals for example are required to have backup generators and... backup water supplies. In fact, hospitals are required to store at least 4 days worth of backup water supplies to keep hospital running at full capacity. Police stations, fire stations, dispatch center, data centers, and many many more buildings, especially in big cities all have backup generators. Aside from hospitals, emergency operation centers, military based, data centers, jails/prison, fire stations, water and power utilities, many research labs, all have back up water supplies as well. In fact, a 2019 readiness survey found most rural towns in the US are not up to standard with their emergency electric and water storage.

In addition to the poor understanding of urban city planning and emergency resource planning, COVID-19 pandemic has also shown us that people in the city actually did a lot better than people in rural areas. We saw many events and coordination of people in the cities organizing and sharing supplies. People in rural areas struggled, though I would not say due to selfishness. Most likely they struggled because they lacked supply to start.

Side addition thing:
The only good folks the MCs run into are ex-military or "good ole" guys. Again, I think the author has a very skewed view of current society. Because, in reality, when we consider the percentage of extremists and violent tendency in the military, police force, and "good ole" guys (just look at rates of domestic violence, sexual violence, etc), these are probably the prime candidates for becoming the most evil people in a post apocalyptic world.

Well thought out tale.

This is a well written series by an author that knows his subject matter. I have enjoyed each of the books and am eagerly awaiting the arrival of the next installment. If you want a good story in this genre just get the first book in the series and start enjoying yourself. I will caution you before you begin that you need to be prepared to miss sleep and not get much else accomplished until you have finished the series. Then you can be frustrated with me until the next book covers out.

This series just gets better and better with each release. Extraction is longer, better written and has more action than previous instalments.

I have enjoyed the way the main characters - Ben, Joel, Allie and Gunner - have developed over the series and hope their reaching Maryland isn't where it's all going to end as I am itching to know what challenges they face on their journey back to Durango.

Great pacing, solid storytelling and enough character development to draw you into the tale without getting boring!

Believable story and crisp action. The plot drew me in and continued to move along with enough pace to keep me interested throughout. Well written without the annoying typos and grammatical errors that sometimes pop up in this genre. Really enjoyed this "episode" in the larger story!

I didn’t look it up before starting this series but are there junior fiction? They are very simple books and they seem juvenile. Like nothing bad ever happens to the characters even when they keep getting attacked or taken by bad guys. Just everything always goes perfectly for them, which is the most unrealistic thing I’ve ever heard in a post apocalyptic series.

Like come on where are all the other people? There’s millions of people in the US and even if somehow 1/2 we’re all killed in the first week there should still be millions more! Yet in 5 books going across America we have only come across maybe 40-50 people that’s the good & bad combined!

Then for them to just happen to find her mom alive is so far from believable I was just pulling out my hair! Was it a child who wrote these books?

Oh and now grandpa’s still alive and the other two kids! But the ex wife/mom is stuck on a cruise somewhere probably to never be heard from again… well that’s just convenient so the father doesn’t have to fight with his ex about taking the kids as he obviously knows how to survive this new world.
🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️

I’m not sure why I just finished 5 books there’s no real depth to them.

Good series

I truly enjoyed this series about a post apocolyptic man, his teenaged son and his friend and their dog. It is not preachy as so much of the post apocolyptic literature that seems to be everywhere these days. Obviously there are those who do not think the world is on a safe course. Hmm. I also like that all five of the books were on kindle unlimited. I won’t bother reading a series where book one is a free come on but if you want any more you have to open your wallet. Thank you for that. I also liked that the editing was mostly well done. Again much of the online stuff is horrible with missing words and misspellings and grammatical no-noes all over. So why only 3 stars? Well it is not great literature but it is honest and is good for passing a few pleasant hours. Enjot!

Overview: In book five, the group continues toward Pittsburgh and Maryland, stopping at a guarded safe haven where they learn Pittsburgh is gone. After Ben helps repel a nighttime attack, they hear of airport employees traveling east—sparking Ali’s hope that her mother is among them. They discover a supposed FEMA camp overrun by rebels, where Joel rescues Ali’s imprisoned mother. Reaching Jack’s house, Joel’s grandfather, they reunite with family and learn Ben’s ex-wife left the kids there to go on a cruise. Ben plans to return to Colorado with the children, using Jack’s old hunting jeep to split the group into a smaller convoy.

Hated getting to the end of it

This is a great series. All the books are too short and all together could have been 2 books but I’ve still enjoyed reading them. The characters are interesting and real. The storyline isn’t all blood, death and violence which is the case with so many apocalyptic books. You really get to know the main characters and their stories. I love the dog.. he’s a great addition and makes the story amusing at times. This series would be great for young adults to read. Looking forward to the next book!!

Pretty much got hooked on this series. You know it’s funny some reviews said nothing happens… Such a marker of our world that if it’s not jampacked like an action movie it’s considered boring. I think it’s very well done and I’m very interested to find out what happens in the end. I think it’s realistic although it’s funny that it’s only about the states, it’s like it’s severed from the rest of the world. But I guess in the event of an EMP they wouldn’t know what was happening with the rest of the world.

Nicely done!! Great series. As one of the other reviewers said, the end of the book comes too quickly and then we have to wait for the next one. Thanks for letting them get Allie together with her mom. Also of course, letting Ben and Joel get to Bradley and Emma. Now the trip back to Colorado is going to be very interesting! Can't wait. I wonder who will ride with whom? Ben and Sandy should be a good story I think? Keep up the good work Bruno!! Lots of great plot potential here.

Another good book in this series. Each book has some good character growth. It seemed to strain credulity a bit that Allie is able to find her mother. I really like the good people of Cloverdale as I do think that many in such a disaster would be good and not evil. I'm glad he found his kids, but it is a bit of a let-down that the ex-wife is not there since that has some built-in interpersonal conflict right there.

Great book and a good series overall

This is the best series i have read of this genre. The series is well researched and very believable. Moves well but not so terse as to be hard to follow. Good characters an d well developed. Liked the level of info on the preps, weapons, and vehicle. Mr Miller obviously knows his stuff.
Anyone who likes this type of book would enjoy Bruno Miller.

Finally, action. In the final book of this series we make it the rest of the way across the country with Ben, Joel and Ellie. Don’t expect anything much as far as relationships or characters changing.

But things do happen and it ends well, opening the way to the next series of books that might take the group back to Colorado.

This is a good series for people who don’t like violence, sex, swearing or too much conflict and nobody has a sense of humor or irony.

Good Reading!

Another chapter in the journey. I like that this series does not go heavily into the ugly and the violence, birdhouses instead on the relationships among the characters and how they work together to reach their goals. Somewhat disappointed at the cliffhanger. I was hoping for more resolution. However, still a good story with some darn good writing!

Excellent

This book finds Ben, Joel, Allie, and Gunner learning the true damage to the country from the attacks. Ben is desperate to find his other two children. They travel though devastated areas and see both the best and worst of people during this catastrophe. Great characters and story about the aftermath of an EMP and nuclear bombs.

Good read

I enjoyed the book although for me personally it was not as good as some books previously published in the series. I'm just glad that they finally reach the rest of the kids and hopefully now the storyline can go in another direction. I can still however recommend the book is people who like to read the post apocalyptic / science fiction genre.

Book Five

Good Book and a great 👍 addition to the series. This is a standalone novel but a part of the Dark Road series. The adventures of Ben, Joel, and Allie are full of action and courage. Hopefully the reader will get other books concerning the group. So much has happened and it is good that the group has made it this far. A very good survival read.

I really like this series

I couldn't give this one five stars because I found myself questioning the realism of a few of the situations the characters endured. Please don't let this review deter you from reading this series! The characters are great and the edge of your seat action are well worth the price of admission.

Can't be the end

With more adventure, Ben, Joel, and Allie (along with an additional passenger), and Gunner make it to Pittsburgh. Not saying more; don't want to spoil it, but this is the last book in the series I have found. Please tell me there's more. I definitely recommend this book!

Good

As Ben, Joel, Allie and the dog Gunner travel from Colorado to Maryland they find adversity at every other tun. It seems there are plenty of people who are willing to take advantage of those less fortunate but along the way they find a few nice surprises. There are still good people out there.

One of the best series of this genre - The characters are well developed and easy to connect with, the plot is believable and moves along with just the right momentum. The level of research into the weapons, vehicles used and potential impacts is a credit to the author.

Each of the series has been excellent and I'm looking forward to the next!!

This is a fun postapocalyptic read. I like this style of book. These have a clear objective. We always know who the protagonists are. We know that nearly everyone else is by default the antagonist. However, the antagonists aren't really developed. They are more of an obstacle that gets in the way of the objective.
