Yet another fantastic vol following the intertwined teen drama of the team and alien action.

I absolutely loved the shapeshifting doppelgänger storyline! It was carried so well, although I did think it could’ve been made even more explosive. Granted, it needed to be wrapped up in time for the Shattered Grid event starting in Saban's Go Go Power Rangers, Vol. 3, so that cut it short, or else it did have a solid enough foundation to continue on past the four issues collected in this vol.

There was a myriad of changing, deepening, and new relationships in this vol and all of them were executed perfectly to ramp up the drama whilst still staying true to character progression and depth.

Of course, the art was as beautiful as Saban's Go Go Power Rangers, Vol. 1, perhaps even moreso as we got to see the team in their pretty and charming homecoming outfits. Almost seemed a shame we never got to see them all dance, but I suppose a fight is a dance of sorts!

Goddamn it, this series is so freaking FUN.

Teenagers have complicated lives. They're bored all the time, always betraying each other, trying to find themselves, and above all else are horny little creatures. This is a tale of complicated lives of our rangers, trying to find a future job, trying to date, trying to push themselves to the limit, all while being superheroes called the Power Rangers. It's fun, it's exciting, and most of all we even get a tale of a creature who invades the group of friends.

It's a series that contains all the cliches from Teen Dramas but makes them work in fun ways with lots of great character moments. Motivations make sense, art is great, and the fights are fantastic. I hope this series continues to be a nice slice of life with some Power Ranger action going forward. A 4.5 out of 5.

[Read as single issues]

Disclaimer: This is a review for volumes 1 and 2 together, since they’re one big story before we head into Shattered Grid, and it’s just easier this way.

Go Go Power Rangers is an odd beast. When it was announced, I was sceptical. What was the point in two Power Rangers series, both about the same set of Rangers, both set at almost the same time, when you’ve got a wealth of Rangers you could draw from? But getting to read it, the reasons become much more readily apparent.

While Mighty Morphin’ deals with the big scale Ranger stuff, Go Go is much more concerned with character beats and relationships. This is set almost the week after the Rangers have received their powers, so they’re coming to terms with how to lead double lives, fighting against Rita while keeping secrets from their families and loved ones, which is a big focus of this first eight issue arc.

Speaking of loved ones, this series also includes Kimberly’s pre-Tommy boyfriend Matthew, who plays a big role in the proceedings. He’s the breakout character really, reacting very naturally to his girlfriend suddenly getting a new group of friends and being very secretitive about things. Writer Ryan Parrott makes him seem like an intrinsic part of Ranger lore despite being brand new for the series (at least, I think he is?).

Parrott also manages to weave in story points that feed into Mighty Morphin’, even with only a few months between the series, such as references to Promethea. In fact, Go Go seems to take the solo character focus issues of Mighty Morphin’ and make them into a whole series instead, practically. Of course, there’re still lots of battles and such (I’m a huge fan of the Rangers using their Zords independently of each other and that happens a lot here), and of course Rita has an evil plan to enact, but it definitely feels like character-first is the order of the day here.

Dan Mora is tapped for art, and it’s effortlessly good. I was a fan of his from his Klaus one-shots with Grant Morrison, but he has managed to turn out 8 extremely consistent issues (and counting) on time and with insane levels of detail in each. His linework is precise, with never a wasted or missed addition, and his storytelling is equally as good in both the character beats and the monster battles. The anguish on Matt’s face at certain points in the book is just painful to look at. The only flaw I’d call out is Rita’s pointy cone boob bra, but I don’t think a good way of drawing that exists, to be honest.

If you’re unsure about Go Go Power Rangers, don’t be. It’s a superb little series that explores the original Rangers in ways that both the show and the Mighty Morphin’ series just didn’t/don’t have time to, while throwing monsters at them in the process. Ranger Heaven, if you ask me.

A fun, smartly-paced teen drama comic that serves as a great companion to MMPR. Onto Shattered Grid!

added on re-read" Lots of emotional payoffs for Billy, Zach, Kim, and a bit of a snafu for Jason and Trini. Also, we are shown the Ranger Slayer!

Another great volume that blends the daily lives of these teens and action. The Rangers are getting broken down from within and some really good story beats present themselves as a result. This series is surprising the hell out of me with how good it is.

I fucking love this series. The art is phenomenal, like damn. I need 20 framed pieces for my place (to my girlfriend's dismay).

This volume gives us a glimpse of Rita's recruitment of her goons, some Jason/Trini romance, and more of a focus on Matthew (great name). The zord action comes alive on the page and love the little teases (Shatter time!).

But as always, the teen drama is what carries the books. Not CW drama, but actual problems and feelings that arise in high school. With the added bonus of these kids being Power Rangers.

God it's such a good series. 100/5

I’d like to start off by appreciating just how much Go Go Power Rangers commits to its 80s teen movie feeling. As much as these books throw aliens, robots, monsters and karate into the mix, they always make sure to include homework, first jobs and, in this case, a school dance.

We get to build out the rangers’ world a bit more here, which is really exciting. We learn some of Rita’s henchmen’s origins, as well as the things the rangers are dealing with outside of their suits.

With Homecoming on the horizon, the Rangers are having a hard time focusing on the intergalactic enemies coming their way. Trini has feelings for Jason, but doesn’t want to upset the flow of the team. Zack’s got a secret admirer. And Kimberly’s boyfriend has been replaced by a shapeshifting goo monster. High school is the worst!

We get our first major identity conflict here, which is really fun. Billy is currently interviewing for a place in a prestigious collegiate program, and seems way more invested in it than Rangering.

I really appreciated how the Matt identity-swap storyline was wrapped up in this book, as it felt like the jig was getting close to up. I was interested in how the amorphous monster, which then becomes a goo-Kaiju, develops feelings for the teenagers, finding it hard to ultimately betray them. I wish we got to explore it more, or maybe we’ll get an explanation in the future. But it felt to me that the book swept it under the rug.

While the goo-Kaiju is fun to say, it’s not the most visually exciting monster villain, and I preferred the previous book’s monster to be more fun to look at. That said! I loved it as an excuse for the team to disjoint their Zords and fight the monster individually.

Bulk gets a storyline, too! It’s nice, sort of a reverse Carrie thing. Maybe a little over-served, in my opinion. But again, really enjoying how they’re building out the world here.

What’s fun is that the television show was barely serialized, with each episode existing as an isolated plot line. There were rarely consequences for the Rangers nor their actions. But in these books, their town has been destroyed, their partners are being kidnapped and losing their minds, homecoming was ruined. It’s exciting, and I hope to see some of Angel Grove turn anti-Ranger.

On spine and description. Book number two presents as a Yellow Ranger story, which feels wrong. Sure, Jason and Trini have a moment of fumbled romance. And the entire team bands together at the dance. But moreso this feels like Billy’s outing. One of the more exciting moment shows Billy, unaware that Matt is not who he seems, suggesting their more athletic friend usurp the role of Blue Ranger. A fun mixup, but also a really cool teenaged story of self-doubt.

While maybe not the absolute thrill that considered its predecessor, Volume Two is a fun continuation of Go Go Power Rangers. I look forward to continuing and meeting some new monsters! 4/5!

Another great volume from Boom! Studios. This series is so good. It keeps the "learning a message" arc feel of the original tv series, but extends the arc to a whole volume instead of 30 minutes of children's action tv. This gives more depth to the characters and really lets them shine. The personality traits merely hinted at in the show are given room to grow.

This volume features a prom. Seeing the rangers and other Angel Grove teens pair up is fun. I am all about this potential Trini and Jason future pairing. Matthew is a big focus of this volume. He's not the only original character for the comic that I want to see more of. Violet is introduced as a shy, nerdy love interest for Zack.

The continuity in these new comics is so great. Especially for a series known for very loose continuity and canon. Billy's interaction with Promethea!!!

The rangers training with their zords is so cinematic. I love the art in this book. The rangers discovering the hidden powers of each of their individual zords is awesome.

In each issue, we get a little glimpse of Rita assembling her squad over the years. I like how even Rita's character is getting fleshed out. Her obsession with loyalty. Baboo and Squatt each get their moments.

There is in-universe Power Rangers merchandise!

At the end of this volume, there's a Shattered Grid tease. I am so ready for this epic event to start! I usually wait to read the compiled volumes, but I may have got a few single Shattered Grid issues.

I give this second volume in Go Go Power Rangers a 5/5! Parrott is doing a wonderful job with this series. If you haven't started these comics, you need to!

Not as good as the first volume but still good. I love how simplistic these are — they’re very fast reads. I think this easily could’ve been over complicated, taking the PR mythos and doing something convoluted. Knock on wood, hopefully it stays like this.

I liked how Rita used her shape shifting putty to spy on the Rangers. It didn’t complicate any of the dynamics between any of them as much as I was hoping, but the overall concept was very fitting with the high school teen drama. My favorite part of this book is probably how it answers why the putties are so dumb in the show. After Matt starts to feel for the Rangers for real, she orders Finster to have them all be dumb from there on out hah.

Didn’t care too much for Bulk & Skull’s thread this time around. But Billy’s was dope. Absolutely loved his struggle between being a new Ranger and his future at potentially being accepted into Promethea. Even proposing that Matt take his place as Blue was a good use.

Loved how they had Zack privy to Matt’s true scheme. Zack was my favorite before Adam.

There was one panel that was confusing towards the end with Kim and Matt.

The cold opens were cool showing origin stories but the end tag was a little bit confusing. Not sure where this Ranger Slayer came from and what she’s holding and how she got them but really looking fwd to this whole thing.

Parrott keeps the momentum of the story going here from the high bar he established, and while it isn't quite as engaging as the first volume there are a lot of great moments. In the first few issues the focus was of course on the Rangers, here he peppers the main story with insight into the villain's backstories so we get to see how lots of Rita Repulsa's henchmen were recruited and their somewhat tragic origins, which is a great idea. We also get a glimpse into the lives of Bulk and Skull again, seeing what would be throw away comedy relief in the tv series to more rounded explanations to their behaviour. This series shines in the development of the characters and it's refreshing to see the spotlight on the supporting characters as well as the main ones. There's even some attempt to give one of the monsters some characterization! It really feels like that the world is fleshing out and I'm looking forward to the next installment.

Okay, this is officially better than anything that the movies or the tv show have done before.

The volume continues where we left off. There is an impostor trying to ruin the lives of the Rangers from within, Jason is trying too hard to lead, and Billy is thinking hard about his responsibilities as a ranger and how that affects his personal life. Again, Parrott is doing a great job at establishing the difficulties about being a teenager with these crazy responsibilities.

We also get some backstories for Rita and the baddies and it’s pretty fun to see.

Volume 2 ends with a very nice tease for what’s to come: Shattered Grid!

Overall, this is a really fun book. 9/10 for art and story.

It’s homecoming and the rangers are busy trying to navigate their individual lives with their increasing responsibilities on the team. The standouts in this volume are Billy and Matt. Billy the quintessential nerd is struggling with a potential opportunity and his place on the team. His speech about knowing how everything works and fits together, but not knowing how he fits on the team was incredibly poignant.

Meanwhile, Matt has been a strong supporting character during this run. Between being kidnapped and the putty-replicant, Matt is a counterpoint to the rangers as a loved one that is inadvertently pulled into dangerous situations because of his presence in their lives.

What a crazy read! Finally seeing the end of the Matt clone monster arc was fucking insane. Jason’s morph when fighting the putty clone gave me literal goosebumps. BILLY GETTING HIS MOMENT THATS MY GOAT!!! And Rita was so scary in this with how she had her own mega zord that was so fire oh my god. Literally everyone here was so good even bulk and skull Holy balls this was so peak. This story arc as of right now is my favorite power ranger arc I’ve read and I can’t wait to see what happened next.

I wasn't sure how I felt about Boom! having two MMPR comics, but both of these series do different things. The main MMPR comic shoots for the stars, and the last two TPB collections have been disappointing for missing the mark. In contrast, both 'Go Go' collections read like standalone episodes of a CW-ified Power Rangers show.

As a result, I don't mind the wait for volume 3. = )

It is pretty cool to see the origins of Rita's minions with seeing how Goldar, Squatt, and Baboo and the fight at the end with the Matthew Putty was pretty cool. Also seeing them training with the Zords was really cool as it is not really explained often how the rangers actually learned how to use their zords.

Collects Go Go Power Rangers Issues #5-8.

Review: Felt the ending of Issue #8 with the Pink Ranger and the Finster-5 thing came out of left field. It’s been a while since I’ve read shattered grid so we will have to see if the Matt, Trini/Jason ship, and the issues among the team members carries over into the event.

A little less melodramatic and a little more dramatic than the first trade. It does the whole doppelgänger plot-line better than the show ever did, and it tried it many times. Dan Mora is one of the best artists in the industry right now, and it’s very cool to see his earlier work, which is already great.

Amazing art from Dan Mora. Story was ok overall, I enjoyed the little solo character arcs a bit more than the overarching Rita stuff. Also some things are skipped over that I would have liked shown.

Yup, another awesome read! This is the second collection of the Go Go Power Rangers comic and its fabulous! This continues the prior volume's look at these characters that many have come to know and love and their everyday lives while fighting the forces of Rita. I love it. That is all!
