Where do I begin?

This book was INCREDIBLE! It's hard to believe that this is S. Massery's first novel.

I was hooked from the very first page. Charlotte is an extremely relatable character who I was immediately rooting for on her life journey. As her relationship with Avery developed, I couldn't help but think back to that one relationship we all have that was comfortable. Was it a great passionate storybook romance? Probably not, but it worked. It worked for us & it worked for Charlotte. Her friends and family that were introduced to along the way only added to the story. I wanted to eat dinner with her parents, gossip with her best friend, strangle some people from her past, and occasionally knock some sense into her boss. It was so easy to picture myself as part of Charlotte's inner circle - watching everything unfold firsthand.

Ultimately, it was SO refreshing to read a romance novel that doesn't follow the typical storyline with an all too obvious happily ever after. I laughed, I cringed, I might've shed a tear or two (shh .. don't tell anyone), and I ended this story with a big smile despite being so sad that it was over. It's not often that the end of a novel leaves me completely satisfied. Sure, I'd love to read on and on and on about the characters & where they go next, but ultimately I felt like this left off right where it should have. I can only hope that S. Massery will bring these characters to life again someday!

Blurb:
Charlotte avoids romance like the plague. Anything that can be put into a romance novel is not tolerated--and that includes mysterious men that sweep women off their feet with a single smile. But what is she to do when a handsome man sits down across from her at a coffee shop and does just that? Instead of promising her romance, Avery offers her an adventure she can’t refuse. A spontaneous date leads to a feeling that Charlotte hasn’t felt in a while: attraction.

Although Charlie and Avery part ways without a true goodbye, fate keeps pushing them back into each other’s orbits. As they struggle to put their pasts behind them and find happiness together, it leaves Charlotte with the question: is it possible to love someone when you’re broken?

A story of two lost souls who find each other again and again, they will put each other to the test. Can they save each other, or will they have to break again in order to save themselves?

3.5 stars - however, I absolutely HATED this story.
Seriously, if you don't want to know anything about this book, just walk on by. I have no clue what I will say, because I'm seriously PISSED, so if I disclose something in the process that spoils this for someone, don't blame me.

This is this writer's debut, and structurally, technically, it's excellent. Solid prose, engaging plot, adequate character development. There are some moderate editing errors but nothing glaring.

I love angsty, emotional stories. To me, this book is more of a prolonged mope. Save for a few flashes of light in the first chapters, we're talking an unabated tone of gray that doesn't really lift until around the 95% mark. However, the tone wasn't the reason I was speed-reading at that point. I just wanted to be done because I was so furious I'd stopped caring.

Upon finishing, I went back to check the location of the biggest clue to this story, and it came at the 8% mark. If anyone is still reading this despite my warning and still hopes to go into this as blind as possible, well...just ignore your progress as you go, is all I'm saying. That spot is the lynchpin here.
This book was a study in frustration for me, the least of the reasons being the sole narrator and heroine, Charlie. I've renamed her 'Debbie Downer.' Perhaps I could have scraped up some empathy for this girl if she'd had something - anything - endearing about her, but she remained stuck in a cycle of negativity that went on too long for her to ever win me over.

But back to this story. It's gotten positive reviews and I am certain many others out there will love it, too. And that's grand.
I am not one of those readers.

What we have here is a sneakily-veiled love quadrangle. For nearly the entire story, two characters in the periphery control the relationship of the main couple, Charlie and Avery. Those secondaries aren't even memtioned through most of the book but it soon becomes apparent that their 'ghosts' are complicating matters more thsn Charlie's deep seated issues left over from high school.
So, based on what began after the prologue, I became invested in one situation. I cared about THAT situation and the main players in it, even if I wasn't fond of one of those players. I stubbornly stayed all in, anxious to see how it would all work out - despite...well, things.
Only there was this disturbingly persistent background noise created by the above-mentioned peripheral characters that I didn't give two shits about because I didn't KNOW them.
I won't get into the particulars, other than to say I was invested in one situation to the point that there is no way I would ever give a fecking damn how this whole thing ultimately played out. I felt very cheated.
And although it wouldn't have made me hate this any less, if that was the way it had to go then certain scenes needed to end with a 'bang' rather than scarcely a whimper. I deserved at least a tear or two to dampen impotent anger I was left with.

Although unnecessary, I reiterate that I hated this story and never connected to Charlie for even a second. She was a cross between a doormat and a brat the entire book and I couldn't warm to her.

So why did I rate 3.5 stars when I consistently rate much lower for this level of dissatisfaction? Because as much as this writer pissed me off, the book was exceptionally well done for a debut.
Her execution here was pretty brilliant. Girl's got skillz.
That said, I recommend reading at one's own risk. It has some safety issues in the way of OM/OW drama and emotional cheating. There are also triggering scenes of drugs and date-rape.
Lastly, as much potential as Ms. Massery has, I don't know if I'd risk cracking any future works of hers.

It's out! My baby is released to the world!

Charlie would like to say the following about her story:
"It's like someone took a microscope to my life and hit some of my greatest and most cringy moments. I don't know whether to be flattered or highly embarrassed, but I'm leaning toward the latter. Thanks a lot!"

This book was easily one of the best romance novels I’ve read in my life. It was real, it was raw, it was accessible, and it was realistic! I think so many people can see themselves represented in this book regardless of identity and they can really learn things about what real love looks like.

Massery’s skillful writing includes such nuance when it comes to the scope of human emotion which makes it so easy to relate to these characters. I highly suggest this book for ANYONE who has or wants to experience love.

This book! It is so well written, I couldn’t put it down; it is hard to believe this is her debut novel. I fell in love with the characters....their feelings, flaws, everything about them was so relatable.

There were so many times I was thinking how much they reminded me of myself.

One of my favorite quotes was, “It isn’t a competition, Charlie. You’re allowed to not be okay, even if my being not okay happens to be a thousand times worse than yours.”

I’ve been there. I’ve said something so similar at one point in my life.

Loved this book. ♥️

This book was SO good!! I thought it was a little slow in the beginning but definitely picked up in the middle. I would say the writing style made the book seem longer than it was but it also helped suck me in to the depth of the feelings the book had to offer. I would definitely recommend this for readers who like an in-depth look at how to get your life back on track after a horrible experience.

INCREDIBLE!
One heck of a book hangover. From the first page to the last the well written suspense filled read plays with your emotions and leaves pieces of itself bound to your heart long after every word has been read. A gripping must read that is definitely something special and incredibly hard to forget.

I absolutely loved Something Special from page 1. Its a story about a young woman's journey through abuse and heartache and how she gets to the other side and finds that the love of her life has always been right in front of her.
Ms Massery does a wonderful job telling her story completely from Charlie's POV. She takes the readers on an incredible journey with Charlie. The story goes back and forth between the present day and her past so we see Charlie's story from the beginning. We also get to meet Avery and Jared the men who shape her and 1 ultimately wins her heart.
I highly recommend Something Special its a book that I am still thinking about and won't soon forget.

4.5**** from me!

I’m actually shocked this is Sara Massery’s first Book! It truly was amazing, so in-depth! I absouletly loved it, and makes you feel so many emotions. I was so hooked from the first page and interested to find out what happened next. The characters were brilliant and so relatable! The writing was perfect, especially for a first time Author. And I was so happy with how everything worked out. Would love a book on Avery!

I highly recommend reading this book.

I really can’t wait to read more by this author.

This is Sara’s debut book an wow did she absolutely blow me away! This is a book with triggers but please do not let it change your mind about reading. I was so drawn into Charlie’s character I could not put this down. I will say I am the victim of sexual assault and for years would not read anything that had rape/assault the storyline. This was written so well that there was no way I could not continue to read it. Thank you Sara for an amazing debut. And I’m so excited to see what else you can write!

2.5 I found the characters to be immature, and I wasn’t really sure I felt the connection between any/all of them. It was like the deeper emotion between them was just barely out of reach. The only character I really enjoyed was Jared. The story, however, I think had merit, and I did want to read to the end to see how it turned out.

3.5 stars!

I’ve got to confess I went into this book blind. I loved the cover and so I requested an ARC. I usually don’t do this. I like to at least read the blurb, but I had a feeling about this one so I decided to take a chance.
Because of that, I didn’t realize there would be sort of a love triangule/rectangule. For more than half of the story, we experience the ups and downs of the relationship between Charlotte (Charlie for friends) and Avery. So I thought this were our main characters. Apparently, I was wrong.
The chapters alternate between past and present. In the past, we learn about her friendship with Jared and what happened when he was forced to leave her and their hometown to go to a boarding school due to a fallout with Colby and the repercussions this event brings. At the same time in the present, we see her relationship with Avery play out.
I’ve got to admit that by the 40% mark, I hated Avery and didn’t want them to end up together. By this time, Jared had reappeared in the story and I was much more invested in their friendship (at the time) than in her relationship with Avery.
Charlie wasn’t by far my favorite heroine. She lacked some self-love and definitely some self-respect. I know what happened to her in the past was pretty f’d up, but that can’t be an excuse for everything, specially how things played out with Avery.
Jared saved the book for me. He was so strong and I loved him even more after everything he went through. Life through so much his way and he learnt from it and grew into such a brave young man. I really admire him for that.
Then, around the 70% mark, Elaina appears in Boston. She’s Avery’s ex and the one who broke his heart. I hated her. .
All in all, I enjoyed the book. . It was different from everything I’ve read and not always for the best reasons. The writing is great, specially for a debut author, and the plot super engaging. I was hooked from the start wanting to know what would happen and how things would play out. I was particularly interested in the chapters about her past, it was intriguing and terrifying at the same time.

There are so many things about this book that I enjoyed. It made me feel strong emotions towards the characters. Some that I rooted for and others I wanted to throttle. It gives you a good sense of how we become the people we are. Our younger years can be very challenging. We're all a product of our past and we can choose to be defined by that or create a new path. It's a journey of self-discovery.

Sara's writing style flows very smoothly and her wording is lovely and well structured. Her imagery adds to your understanding of the characters feelings. I love the line when she says "But the truth is, I have this feeling of utter exhaustion. At some point, I started treading water and I lost track of the shoreline".

It was fun taking a journey across America. We stopped in many beautiful cities and I enjoyed those visits.

I highly recommend reading this book. It was difficult to put down at the end. I would like the journey to continue. I look forward to seeing what follows Sara's debut novel.

I was excited to get my hands on this because the blurb sounded interesting. I though the plot was solid and found it interesting the author stuck with the random meeting storyline.
I would have given this book 5 stars if it wasn’t for the background. In this book the main character flashes back to her past and while I understand it was important to show her past and how it shaped her now, I found it a bit graphic. There is a decent amount of sexual abuse in this book and it’s not just one or two times but multiple. In the blurb the author warns that there is sexual abuse but there is straight up rape this book. It was a bit hard for me to read only because the flashbacks were constant throughout the book. And they were very graphic. Just a warning to those who want to read.
I also found Avery a very confusing character. I just did not understand him at all. One minute he is nice and sweet and then the next he switches and yells. We don’t really get to see his past, which also confused me. If we get to see Charlottes’ past why not his?

I received a free copy of this book for an honest review.

The title and description of this book sounded intriguing to me and within the first 2 chapters I was captured.
There were moments in the book where I didn't want to put it down and other times where I felt like I needed to put it down for a break . For me it wasn't so much about the explicit scenes but more or less the frustration I felt towards the main character , Charlotte. But it was also a testament to just how involved I felt in her story .
I loved that this book didn't just go down one long road , and really it took me unexpectedly a few times . I'm giving it 4 stars rather than 5 because I didn't like that there were questions that went unanswered , such as why did Jared never reach out while at boarding school? Why didn't he ever respond? I felt like it was important to get an explanation to that since we heard so much of Charlottes side of the story in regards to that. I also felt like the story was redundant at times . Very glad I was given the opportunity to read and review this book as it was a refreshing new story I hadn't read before.

I really enjoyed reading this book. I found it was not what I would consider a typical romance as the the relationship between our 'hero' and 'heroine' didn't come until the end of the book. The whole story worked for this book and made it an entertaining read. This story was told from Charlotte's perspective and it was good to have the flashes of time to help the reader understand more about the characters and their train of thought throughout the book. The characters in this book are so easy to relate to and make you think about the events and characters and how it relates to you or someone in your life. Very good read, eager to see more from this author.

This is a new author to me, and I wasn’t really sure what to expect from her. I really enjoyed reading this story, it’s told from Charlotte’s point of view and covers quite a number of years. There are a number of dark times in her life and she struggles with her emotions and being able to define what she really feels and what love really is and feels like. It’s an emotionally charged story and the author does a wonderful job with the use of descriptive writing to really hold my attention and she took me on an emotional rollercoaster. I enjoyed the story so much that as soon as I finished this one, I immediately started book 2.

Something Special by S Massery is an amazing work of art

This book will be one that will be on my mind for a long time. It’s not a typical romance in that it does not follow traditional tropes. The main character,Charlie, relates the story in first person. Growing up and finding ourselves is painful in many ways. Charlie suffered through so much adversity. The book is so beautifully written and captures each character where they are unique. I enjoyed the progression of Charlie’s life and how she grew as a person who finally found her passion, her acceptance of herself, the ability to love and accept her family and finally accept the love from her soul mate. I highly recommend this book, it was hard to put down. I look forward to more outstanding books by this author.

Honestly, I love a good cautionary tale. This is one of those books you really want to scream at the character but sometimes people need to read these stories so they learn from their mistakes. I forget that their are people that have lived these tales. Stayed with the wrong guy for far too long. It hurts my heart. At least this one ended with a great love interest but I feel like their were so many unanswered questions that I’m excited to learn about from Jared’s POV. Charlie went through a very traumatic past and I understand how that can truly affect you even after it’s over. Those things take time and I’m honestly glad she took more to really pull herself together before getting with the right guy. It shows maturity and self love.

Sigh

Whenever I finish a S. Massery book I have the desire to spin in a field of flowers.

Something special is no exception to that feeling.

I will admit, Avery spends the book making me feel homicidal, and I want to slap Charlie a little.

Something special touches on some subtle but sensitive subjects, that I think are very important.

Massery is a master, simple as that. I sincerely hope you pick up this book, and continue to read every single one she writes in the future!

Charlie and Jared are childhood best friends. When Jared, her only friend, leaves abruptly, Charlie is alone to navigate high school and relationships.
The story is from Charlie’s POV and goes into her adulthood. It shows how some cycles are hard to break even when they don’t seem the same.

I appreciated that it was not written she went to therapy and was all better. In real life, therapy might show you the tools but it doesn’t fix you until you can work through it yourself.
Check your warnings as there is on page triggers.

Be still my beating heart. I love a good romance which is exactly what I got!
I did actually think it would be Avery at the start but not with that rancid breath!
Loved this story & the characters, especially Jared, this is not the typical romance road, there are bumps along the way, I do feel there could have been more drama/feeling around the limb maybe?
But loved Charlie & thoroughly loved reading this book.

Touching story

This is an amazing story about overcoming life's obstacles and finding true love and happiness. Charlie has pretty much settled with an okay life. After a rough past she was fine with things not being good as long as they weren't bad anymore. Until her childhood best friend returns to her life. She starts reevaluating herself, her life, and finally starts to truly heal. Absolutely beautiful and encouraging.

I had no idea what this book was about going into it. For a debut novel this is beautifully done and impressive. Its a rollercoaster of trauma, emotions and growth. Charlie has definitely been dealt a difficult hand and ai was gripped with this book from the start. I had my theories on what I wanted to happen and I am really happy to say that other things happend that I am beyond happy they did.

I absolutely adore s.masserys writing and wanted to read all of her books! What better place to start than the first book she ever published.

For a debut novel the writing in this book was incredible. Charlie’s story was so heartbreaking and frustrating that I spent most of the book angry 😂

I can not wait to start on something sacred.

I have read other books written by S. Massery and I can tell you after reading her debut novel she has come along way. This is not my favorite book written by her. I would not recommend to a friend. I can not stand the present chapter then past chapter in a book. On top of this book being dragged on through a complacent relationship. I honestly wanted this book to be over.
