About the author

Joseph Delaney was a full time writer living in Lancashire, in the heart of Boggart territory.

He was the author of Wardstone Chronicles, Starblade Chronicles, Arena 13, Aberrations and a new book came out in April 2020, Brother Wulf. This is a new spooks story featuring Tom and Alice, but introducing a new character, a young monk called Brother Wulf.

He first got the idea for the Spooks series when he moved to the village where he lives now and discovered there was a local boggart - ‘a man like me needs boggarts around’. He made a note in his notebook ‘a story about a man who hunts boggarts’ and years later when he had to come up with an idea at short notice developed this into ‘The Spook’s Apprentice’, the first book in the series.

He continued to draw upon the folklore of Lancashire and has acquired much local knowledge over the years which he tweaks and modifies to create his fictional world. Another source of inspiration has been Lancashire's varied and atmospheric landscape. Many of the locations in the County are based on actual places in Lancashire.

In the early days of his writing career Joseph worked as a teacher at a Sixth Form College: his subjects were English, Film and Media Studies. He used to get up early and write every morning before work. That way he could write a book a year – which promptly got rejected! When the Americans bought the series he decided to give up teaching and write full time.

Prior to teaching he worked as an engineer in his twenties, completing an apprenticeship just like Tom Ward in the spook’s books.

Joseph described his method of writing as a process of discovery. He didn’t plot too far ahead and often didn’t know what is going to happen until he writes it down. In other words he made it up as he went along. He prefed writing dialogue to description, in which he said he is a minimalist and leaves much to the reader’s imagination.
Joseph had three children and nine grandchildren and was a wonderful public speaker available for conference, library and bookshop events.

The Spook's Apprentice, The Spook's Curse and The Spook's Secret have all been shortlisted for the Lancashire children's Book for the Year Award. The Spook's Apprentice is the winner of both the Sefton Book Award and the Hampshire Book Award.

Crafty has been stuck in his family's cellar for nearly a year, with only his whispering dead brothers and a friendly aberration he calls the Bog Queen as company. He is then taken to the castle by his father to become a gate grub, a short-lived position to help stop the creeping Shole from overrunning the country. The Gatekeepers are to be obeyed without question, but Crafty starts to defend himself and his brethren. Delaney's Spook series is way better.

P.S. It seemed idiotic to me that gate grubs were not armed to battle the Aberrations, which took way too long to be proposed.

Mimo tego że główny bohater podejmuje głupie decyzję to zawsze unika jakichkolwiek konsekwencji. Mam wrażenie że zostałam słabo wprowadzania do świata ale mógł to być specjalny zabieg ponieważ główny bohater też mało wie,. Momentami oczywista fabuła.

Having read Arena 13 I was quietly confident I would like The Beast Awakens (I Haven't read Spooks) and I wasn't disappointed! In the world Delaney has created, a dark force (the Shole) is taking over. All creatures that are unfortunate enough to be living where the Shole takes over are either killed or "changed" into blood thirsty monsters. The main character, Crafty, has some immunity to the Shole (as he has Fey blood) and is taken on as a "Gate Grub" in the fight against the Shole. "Gate grubs" although vital are treated poorly and seem to be expendable as they travel into the Shole through the silver gates the Mancers operate. Crafty is a very likable character that has empathy and high morals. He is brave even though he is very scared (and there is plenty to be scared of!). Delaney does a good job in developing his characters and this along with an intriguing villain in the form of an entity (the Shole) rather than a person makes this a great read. It is a little bit scary and quite suspenseful and sets up the whole mystery of the Shole very well. I can't wait to find out exactly what happened to Crafty's mother!

Au vu de mon engouement pour L'épouvanteur, j'avais très envie de découvrir cette nouvelle série de Joseph Delaney (d'ailleurs je n'ai toujours pas lu Arena 13, il faudrait que j'y pense aussi).
A celles et ceux, qui, comme moi, aiment l'écriture et l'univers de l'auteur, vous ne serez pas déçus en lisant ce premier tome d'Aberrations. En effet, on retrouve bien le style de Joseph Delaney même si ici, il nous propose une histoire bien différente de celle de L'épouvanteur.
Ce n'est que le début, mais déjà on a dans ce tome les bases d'un monde très original. L'atmosphère est assez anxiogène, les personnages étranges et inquiétants, bref tous les éléments pour une nouvelle saga à succès sont réunis.
Même si je préfère l'univers de L'épouvanteur, j'ai beaucoup apprécié cette lecture et je suis curieuse de découvrir la suite.

So, technically, it doesn't hold the same place in my heart as The Wardstone Chronicles, but it was interesting and entertaining nevertheless. I'm a bit sad there's no forthcoming sequel listed on Goodreads at the time of writing this review, because it needs one and I would definitely read it ASAP.

That was so fun! I believe it's intended for a younger audience than the last apprentice series and is mainly for children but because Joseph Delaney made up so much of my childhood, I enjoyed reading this even at this age.

I really enjoy Joseph Delany's writing and world building. This series starts well, with interesting characters, lots of danger and darkness. Look forward to the next book, which is waiting on my bedside table.

I am currently on page 43 out of 294 of Aberrations "'We can't predict how long it will take for the shole to change a person or creature trapped within it. In this case, it took much longer than usual. Your dog didn't look like that when your brothers found it'" (Delaney 42). This quote is what stands out the most from what I read so far. I shall assume that the shole in real life is the negative environment that could change peoples mentally from how they were from the beginning if they were to be separated from people they're close to, who they've known or their family. They could be changed so much depend on how long they've been separated because society can change them and human needs to change in order to adapt and survive in a specific society they've lived in.

I have a lot to expect from this book and I have yet to know what the shole and the monster really is and who should the MC be aware of. The shole or the people around him.

four stars and a half...

the pleasure of reading the dark stories of Joseph Delaney, I was forever in love with Tom Ward form the Spook series, and was so excited to get into a new for of the dark and with a new protagonist Crafty Benson...
have to admit some parts seemed a little odd to me and not a logical human behavior, I mean I understand that Grubs are the lowest rank, but that does not justify not blinking an eye for the suspicious murderSSSs under the guidance of the same mancor Vipr, I mean COME ON, but explaining that under the word of bureaucracy made a little sense to it

About the Plot summary Crafty is a gate grub, a fey born that can get into the cursed Shole and discover it, under the guidance of a mancor...and to find a solution for this problem..
-his enemy is Viper, a mancor that belongs to a cult of the grey hood who worship the shole, and was sent into it by Crafty in self defense, the Shole changed Viper into something nasty, and mostly he will come back seeking revenge.
-The Bog Queen Bertha, I loved her she reminded me of Alice, she is an apparition, but Crafty's friend, they didn't say why she befriended him though, she is a warrior and an alley.
-Lick , she is a genius mansor, who has a high rank, and one of Crafty's good if officially ranked friends.
-Lucky, and another gate grub, a good kid, but think he will face a dark end, as a the witch Old Nellncursed him but getting what he deserves whatever that is
-Mr.Benson Crafty's dad, he is a fey, he was rescued by Crafty, and he told him that there is something very powerful that can lure you into ultimate danger
-The Wooden Duke, he changed by an accident that happened in the Shole that turned his lower half into a tree, he cannot move, he was rescued by Crafty when it happened, and he consider Crafty his personal spy, giving him a silver key as a ticket allowing him to venturer to any place he wants ,as one of the organization old rule no one to share any information with the other department and ultimate secrecy, the Duke and Crafty only know about the presence of spies of the grey hood within the organization, and Crafty is trying to know who..
-Crafty's old house, in the Cellar is his two dead brothers, who whispers and Crafty can hear them, also his mother, who was changed by the shole,and told him not to try to see her , nor to tell his father to seek her...I think she is the witch that they said was returned into the Shole somehow, either her or Old Nell that which who was hanged though she was kind, and cursed Crafty, Lucky and Donna
as for Donna she was the third grup who was killed by Viper and was buried in the shole in hope to return again.


Enjoyed the pace of it, regardless of those illogical parts, and that it felt a little off somehow but it is exactly hitting my appealing note of dark stories, just hope as much as I loved it ,hope it won't be over 13 books like the Spook, I cant handle this kind of commitment again.,,who am I kidding,am already hooked.

An excellent start to a new Spooks-like series by Joseph Delaney. I love the command of the "simple" English language Delaney always demonstrates in his stark works, reminding me of certain poets like John Clare or Thomas Hardy: unadorned, heartfelt the way things young children say are heartfelt, perfect for the dark days and dark deeds these Lancashire-based novels are all about. And I love the way Delaney can build an allegiance in the reader to very foreign intelligences and powers, going back to Grimalkin the witch assassin and Slither in the Spooks series and demonstrated here in the awesome Bog Queen. I'm reminded of my favorite science-fiction books with non-human protagonists: Ann Leckie's Ancillary series and Martha Wells' Murderbot. I hope this series works out well for Delaney as well as for the fans.

I am in love with this series already! Can’t wait for the next book to come out. Crafty and his cohorts are great characters with a lot of depth. Crafty’s emotions feel very real to me and I really felt for his plight throughout the book.

At first I wanted to hate Lick, but she is such a great character who gradually reveals more about herself.

I found myself so curious about the Shole and why it started at one particular house in Preston—I am very excited to find out why and how the Shole began, 70 years ago!

Bring on book two, Mr. Delaney! As is usual with your writing, you have captivated me!

I've been going through long withdrawals since the Last Apprentice series. I was so excited to hear about this new series and got it on Kindle right when it came out. This first book is definitely a build up for the series and I can't wait for the next book, which is already too far away. I couldn't help but try to compare it to the Last Apprentice series, for example I LOVE the Bog Queen <3 she reminds me so much of Grimalkin. I really hope this series follows the long path of the Last Apprentice with many, many books.

Abberations - Bestia się budzi to pierwszy tom nowego cyklu Josepha Delaney, autora, po którego sięgam bez wahania, który towarzyszy mi już od ponad dekady i którego książki jeszcze absolutnie nigdy mnie nie zawiodły. Znany jest przede wszystkim z Kronik Wardstone, wspaniałej serii, która doczekała się paskudnej ekranizacji (Siódmy Syn).

Bodajże dwunastoletni Sprytek od dawien dawna większość dnia spędza w pozbawionej światła zaryglowanej piwnicy. Jest to swoiste zabezpieczenie, odkąd jego dom zagarnął Szol - magiczna zasłona, które pojawiła się znikąd. W jej czeluściach mogą przetrwać tylko nieliczni - Nieludzie, spośród których wywodzi się ojciec Sprytka, pełniący ważna role Kuriera, ich dzieci, jak Sprytek i ponoć także wiedźmy, choć tego nikt nie udowodnił.

Pewnego dnia Sprytek dostaje szansę jedna na milion - ma okazję przejść przerażającą próbę, która wykaże, czy zdolny jest pracować jako pomoc Bramomanty. Miałby w ten sposób poprzez magiczna bramę przedostawać się do Szolu i wykonywać mniejsze lub większe zadania. Próba jest tym straszniejsza, gdy pomyśleć, że w jej trakcie zginęli tragicznie bracia Sprytka. Gdy młody Nieludź dostaje się do zamku, odkrywa mroczny spisek, znajdując się w samym jego sercu. Czy będzie w stanie ocalić siebie, przyjaciół i znany świat? Czy rozgryzie tajemnice Szolu i co najważniejsze, czy pokona czającą się w głębi Szoku bestie?

Ta książka nie zawiodła mnie w ogóle i dostałam dokładnie to, czego się spodziewałam po Josephie - odważnych bohaterów, mocne więzi, dużą dawkę przygody, tajemnicy, trochę Mroku i przede wszystkim magię! Czuję się, jakbym znów wróciła do Wardstone, ale takiego bardziej strasznego, mroczniejszego i z groźniejszymi potworami. Dla uważnych i ciekawskich czytelników jest nawet nawiązanie do pierwszej serii Delaney’a, na widok którego uchachałam się jak głupia. Wspaniały uśmiech skierowany do fanów!

Czekam bardzo niecierpliwie na możliwość kontynuowania ten przygody, bo książka ta rozpaliła moja ciekawość i chce rozwiązywać zagadki wraz z nimi! Chce wiedzieć, czym jest Szol i czy ma własny rozum, a może ktoś nim steruje? Chce poznać ta mistyczna bestie, bo zaciekawiła mnie cholernie bardzo! Chcę więcej Sprytka, który jest bardzo mądrym i dzielnym młodzieńcem, ale nie ma się wrażenia, ze jest nad wiek rozwinięty i mino wszystko mam wciąż świadomość, ze to wciąż dziecko.

Oryginalne nazewnictwo (nie martwcie się, na końcu zawsze jest słowniczek!), cudowne przygody, idealny balans pomiędzy przygoda, mrokiem i tajemnicą sprawiają, że naprawdę ciężko się nudzić w trakcie lektury. Podoba mi się nazywanie potworów Aberacjami - wydaje się to idealnie pasować do kontekstu książki. No po prostu cud, miód i orzeszki.

Nie wiem jak dla was, ale dla mnie Delaney to takie must have!

Dès le premier paragraphe, l’ambiance est posée. Il faut dire que l’auteur excelle dans l’art de créer des atmosphères sombres et lugubres dans lesquelles il s’amuse à mettre en scène des personnages terrifiants afin de jouer avec ses héros. Ici, Crafty est tout de suite sympathique, et si le début est un peu plus lent (comme Crafty, on est comme englué dans le Shole et on ne comprend pas trop ce qui se passe), l’intrigue prend son envol quand l’adolescent arrive au château de Lancaster et découvre le rôle d’une mouche de porte (essentiellement, survivre malgré des ordres parfois bien stupides) au fil de ses expériences. C’est aussi là qu’il fait la connaissance de Lucky et Donna, mouches tout comme lui, avec lesquels il découvre les manigances de Vipton. Celui-ci ne travaille certes pas contre le Shole… et s’ils veulent survivre, les trois mouches doivent trouver une façon de le tuer.

Habile dans la construction de son récit, efficace dans les scènes d’action et plaçant des indices et des personnages clés qui seront utiles pour la suite, Joseph Delaney touche encore une fois la cible avec ce récit parfait pour une nuit blanche. J’aime la diversité des personnages (mention spéciale à la nouvelle mouche qui arrive en cours de route qui a toujours le nez plongé dans ses livres ainsi qu’à la Reine du marécage et ses répliques assassines) et le rythme rapide. Je suis donc accrochée et j’attends la suite!

Reçu en cadeau d'anniversaire, j'étais curieuse de découvrir cette nouvelle série de Joseph DELANEY, ayant beaucoup aimé les débuts de L'épouvanteur.
Là encore c'est un véritable page turner qui se dévore en quelques jours. le style est simple et le vocabulaire accessible. Cependant, vu le thème et certaines scènes je ne le conseillerai qu'à des lecteurs avertis ou friands de frissons et de scènes horrifiques.
Oserez-vous vous aventurer dans le brouillard nous somme la quatrième de couverture ? J'y ai suivi avec beaucoup de plaisir et d'appréhension le jeune Crafty, mouche de porte de son état et Fey de nature. Les personnages m'ont d'emblée accrochés. J'ai retrouvé beaucoup du jeune Thomas Ward de L'épouvanteur dans Crafty, niveau caractère comme niveau des actions parfois impulsives. La magie à l'oeuvre est assez originale et les capacités des personnages donnent à voir un univers sombre et lugubre, où les alliés ne sont pas toujours où on pense les trouver.
Les scènes d'action sont nombreuses et les yeux courent d'une page à l'autre, en apnée. Les créatures sont toutes plus effrayantes les unes que les autres et ses fameuses aberrations méritent bien leur nom.
Je lirai avec attention la suite de cette série car la fin tient en haleine pour la suite, pour découvrir ce qui se cache dans le cœur du Shole et comment les héros vont freiner son avancée sur le monde Diurne.

Z dodaniem ze duża cześć oceny jest za to jak przyjemnie i szybko czytało się tą książkę oraz jak zaciekawił mnie kreowany świat. Często to o czym pomyślał lub co zaspekulował bohater działo się na następnej stronie. Bardzo prosta, jednowątkowa historia. Zakończenie dało mi dużo ekscytacji ze w końcu wyjaśni się o co tak naprawdę chodzi w tym całym świecie (bo tutaj bohater niestety cały czas tylko powtarzał ze sam tego nie wie) ale niestety kontynuacja serii nie została wydana w Polsce wiec chyba jednak się o tym nie przekonam. Spodziewałam się czegoś gorszego jednak bardzo przyjemnie, praktycznie bezwysiłkowo brnęło się przez te historie, ale niestety samo pokazanie historii bardzo średnie. Oszczędne rozmowy między bohaterami, mało sensownych rozważań bohatera (jak wspomniałam tutaj myśli i spekulacje bohatera poparte 2 zdaniowa analizą zazwyczaj później okazywały się prawdą) oraz niedosyt w pokazaniu świata. Cały czas czytając miałam nadzieje ze dowiem się czegoś więcej jednak zdradzane nam było absolutne minimum. Gdyby zastało to bardziej rozbudowane napewno mój odbiór książki byłby lepszy.

Ps. Bertha ❤️ (której również wolałabym tutaj więcej). Str. 197 i reakcja Sprytka rozbawiła mocno

Ps2. Bardzo subiektywne ale powtarzające się średnio 3 razy na stronie imię Sprytek momentami doprowadzało mnie do szału

3 to maybe 3.25 stars, it was okay at times but was frustrating at others. The main story was okay and the MC was not bad but just found something missing. It was like the MC was not a strong enough character to entertain you and there was no real supporting characters to fill in. The character that tries to fill that role was introduced way late in the story and does not really get you to feel for them and there relationship as it was kind of rushed. The main story has a lot of missing things and they don’t really explain what is happening or why with the world. I just found it okay for the most part and not a must read or anything.

Je pense que les fans de l'épouvanteur aimeront cette nouvelle série, car on retrouve l'univers et le style de Joseph Delaney. De mon côté, je n'avais pas apprécié plus que ça le premier tome de sa première série donc j'avoue que je m'attendais à autre chose avec cette nouvelle saga. J'ai aimé l'univers et je trouve qu'il a du potentiel mais celui-ci n'est malheureusement pas assez exploité à mes yeux. Je ne me suis pas attaché plus que cela aux personnages donc résultat ce premier tome est une déception pour moi...

3.5 out of 5. A general sense of apathy. It was a relatively good book and it gripped me, but sometimes the things the characters did was filled with a general disinterest. The aberrations and the horror section was good and extremely vivid, at times even scaring me. I can see how it would grip a younger age bracket, especially with all the monsters but it didn't quite do it for me. Still a good book and looking forward to reading the sequel.

my library has Wardstone @ 9-12 age... Abberrations must be 12-15 range.

The wording Delaney uses for the vivid imagery in Beast awakens is awesomely scary
and I'm only 30 pages in.

"You have the word practicalities in your vocabulary , and yet you don't know what an appendage is? [...]... tentacle or a claw. Sometimes we find it necessary to chop'em off!" . Here' to hoping the rest of the book turns out to be just as good and i'll pick up the next 2 books.

Its too bad Canada didn't really start to carry these books till year after publishing.

My only beef is that the book seemed short. But maybe Delaney's in for the Wardstone style run

Joseph Delaney's new fantasy series uses the same ingredients than his popular one The last apprentice : adventures, monsters, witches, a young boy with a special destiny. Here we are with new characters full of surprises and enigmatic personalities. This volume deserves 4 stars because it is an introduction to a new world and it needs a little polishing but the creatures are incredibles and originals. I can wait to read the second volume.

Un nouvel univers beaucoup plus sombre et inquiétant que celui de l’Epouvanteur. J’ai apprécié cette historie de Shole, brouillard monstrueux qui engloutit tout sur son passage et qui piège ou transforme toute vie en monstre. Ça m’a fait un petit clin d’œil à la série Shadow and Bone.
Crafty est un petit gars sympa qui m’a clairement fait penser à Tom Ward. Têtu, combattant, plein d’audace voir téméraire et surtout courageux.
J’ai apprécié ce premier tome, peut être un peu long au début le temps de tout mettre en place, avec cette ambiance malaisante et très sombre. Les créatures sont toujours aussi effrayantes, j’ai beaucoup aimé leurs descriptions.
Je ne sais pas si cette sage va surpasser celle de l’Epouvanteur, mais ça reste un bon univers et une bonne histoire à découvrir.
