Ba. Venkatesan (Tamil: பா. வெங்கடேசன்;) (Known as Ba.Ve) is a noted Tamil writer and Literary Critic.

His best-known and critically acclaimed works are Baageerathiyin Mathiyam, Thaandavaraayan Kathai. He currently lives in Hosur, Tamil Nadu.

Mighty impressed with this! Makes me want to read more of Ba.Venkatesan. As he seems to say, it is not the destination that matters but the journey that does. Incredible prose too!! This book is not an easy read but definitely an alluring one. Very difficult to abandon once you have started reading it. Onto his next work- Bagirathiyin Madhiyam

My first tryst with magical realism in Tamil!

The best thing about this book is probably how well-written it is. There is a lyricism to every line that puts in your head all this wonderful imagery, going very well with the stories. This is perhaps employed to best use in what was my favourite of the four novellas, the first one - mazhaiyin kural thanimai. Even the title is lyrical!

The novellas get progressively more arcane and explore various facets of life at various times. This becomes a little trying at times, especially in the third story - neela vidhi. There was also the problem that the female characters were not as well-written as the male ones for the most part. They often seemed to exist just to serve as a foil to the male ones, who were inexplicably noble in most of the stories. This may have been since the novellas were all set firmly in the past, especially at times in history when patriarchy was at its heights. This is not the point of these stories though. Each story instead, explores some aspect of existence. This is especially true in the last and titular novella, Rajan Magal. There are some great passages in that one about existence and about dreams - all of which were novel and thought-provoking. The story itself sometimes intrudes into these and feels more like an elaborately constructed distraction. Similarly, aayiram saradha also has some intense passages about love that take you to places you've never been before. The story itself also ruminates on what it means to be an immigrant and about the bonds we form through such experiences, making for a very engaging read.

Overall this was an interesting and thought-provoking book, that can get a little too much at times. Go into it with lots of patience and you will be rewarded sufficiently.

பா.வெங்கடேசனின் படைப்புகள் தமிழ் கதையாடலை உலகத்தரத்திற்கு போட்டி போட வைக்கும் படைப்புகள் என்று சொல்வது மிகையாகாது . வெங்கடேசனின் படைப்புக்களை படிக்க ஆரம்பிக்க நினைக்கும் வாசகர்களுக்கு இந்த சிறுகதை தொகுப்பு ஒரு நல்ல ஆரம்பப்புள்ளி என்று சொல்லலாம் . கதை , கதாபாத்திர வடிவமைப்பு , கதை சொல்லும் விதம் என்று அவரின் படைப்புக்களை படிக்கும் போது நம்மை ஆச்சர்யப்படுத்தும் விஷயங்களை தந்துகொண்டே இருக்கிறார் . இலக்கிய வாசிப்பாளர்களுக்கு மிக பெரிய விருந்தை கொடுக்கும் ஆசிரியர் இளம் வாசிப்பாளர்களை கொஞ்சம் திணறடித்துவிடுகிறார் . பொறுத்து படித்தால் இன்பம் தரும் பொக்கிஷம் தான் வெங்கடேசனின் படைப்புகள் .நான்கு கதைகளும் நான்கு வகை காதல்களை சொல்லியிருந்தாலும் அந்த கதையின் பெண்களை சுற்றி தான் அந்த கதைகள் அமைந்திருக்கிறது . பெண்களை சுற்றி தான் சமூகமும் , காதலும் இயங்குகிறது என்பதில் மிக ஆழ்ந்த நம்பிக்கையுடையவராக வெங்கடசேன் தன் எல்லா படைப்புகளிலும் காட்டியிருக்கிறார் . ஆசிரியரின் ஞானம் அத்தனை கதையிலும் அருவியை கொட்ட , ராஜன் மகள் கதை magical realism வகை கதைகளை வேறு ஒரு பரிமாணத்திற்கு எடுத்து சென்றிருக்கிறது . அந்த ஒரு கதைக்காகவே மொத்த சிறுகதை தொகுப்பையும் இன்னும் 10 முறை படிக்கலாம் . இந்த சிறுகதை தொகுப்பினை படித்து விட்டு அடுத்து இவருடைய படைப்பான வாரணாசி படித்துவிட்டு அதற்கடுத்து முறிந்தோ ஏப்ரலோ , அல்லது பாகிரதியின் மதியத்துக்கு சென்ற பின் தாண்டவராயன் கதைக்கு செல்ல வேண்டும் . எடுத்தவுடன் தாண்டவராயன் கதையை படித்துவிட்டு ஆசிரியரை ஒதுக்குவது என்பது இங்க (நான் கண்டவரையில் ) நிறைய பேர் செய்யும் தவறு . கண்டிப்பாக தமிழ் வாசிப்பாளன் படிக்கவேண்டிய ஒரு எழுத்தாளர் வெங்கடேசன் .
