When a group of women from different walks of life are brought together by fate during the end of the world as they know it, each must find a way to survive against the odds as well as learn to rely on each other.
Laura Kennedy finds herself without a home when part of the city of Astoria, Oregon burns after a solar storm causes a worldwide blackout. Left with few options, she resigns herself to living with her brother’s family and trying to get by while food and resources quickly diminish. As she begins to despair about the fate of the world, a handsome young stranger rides into her life and suddenly she finds herself attracted to a woman in a way she never expected … Sam.
Sam Quinn is a veterinarian student when the power goes out everywhere. Believing everything happens for a reason, she decides to ride Northwest on her horse to explore the rapidly changing landscape in hopes of finding a place where she belongs. Instead, she encounters nothing but fear and unrest, or at least until she has an accident, and wakes up to meet a woman who wants nothing to do with her, but who Sam can’t stop thinking about … Laura.
Taylor Barnes is an Army veteran who is happy to simply work on a farm outside of town, which she shares with her close friends. However, when the city of Astoria struggles to maintain order after the world goes dark, she suddenly she finds herself thrust into a leadership role she never wanted. The only reason she agrees is so she can keep the world safe for the woman she loves … Jackie.
Jackie Scott, once a powerful CEO, had the world at her fingertips but is now adrift in a new reality without any of the modern conveniences she once relied on. Living on her sister’s farm near the small town of Astoria, the only stability she can rely on is the one person who she is slowly learning to trust and, if she is willing to listen to her heart, maybe even love … Taylor.
The end of the world is only the beginning.

Note: This is a full-length novel, which can be read as a stand-alone book, however, it is closely tied to the previous story “Darkness Falls.” These books have an end-of-the-world theme but are significantly more focused on strong female characters in loving lesbian relationships.

I liked this even more than Darkness Falls. Laura and Sam were terrific additions to the cast. For every scene of back to the land domesticity the author keeps the tension building with some despicable local characters. Nicely done and some pretty sweet (and hot) moments in the hay mow.
This was a nice sequel to the first first book but not as gripping as the first one. Where the first one kept me on the edge of my seat nervous for the group, this one kept me more interested to just see how they survive. We are introduced to two new characters in this one, Sam and Laura. Unlike Lexi and Anna, whose relationship took years, or Taylor and Jackie, whose relationship is complicating, Sam amd Laura's relationship is love at first site depsite the age difference which oddly enough is never mentioned. Also there were a few inconsistencies. One in particularl was dealing with Laura. She at first is living with her sister-in-law but then later states she is an only child. Regardless, it was a good read and makes me really consider having solar panels and moving out to farm. I give this one 4.5* as I liked the first one better but will definitely read more if the series continues.
A pretty solid part 2 of the series! I did enjoy this one a tad more than book 1, and because I learned to embrace the cheesy romance and ridiculously overdone language of longings of book 1, I was able to keep my eye rolls to a minimum. Unlike what my mom told me when I was a kid, your eyes will NOT stay that way.
"Hero" seems to be the theme of this one. I cringe a little with this angle. I have to relay a WAY over the top moment, which I don't think is super spoiler-y. There is a part that's pretty freaky actually, a big icky thing is going down, and Sam happens to be close by. Lo and behold does she not RIDE UP ON A HORSE to save the day, galloping like a banshee and giving the attacker what for with the toe of her big ol' boot. She rears around to the gasps of those around her, heart eyes poppin' a plenty, has a wee slip due to the horse getting freaked, and falls in a bad way. But she is a saviour! What do you think could make her even more of a quintessential wet panty dreamboat? Huh let me think here.....Oh, MAKE SURE SHE IS HOLDING A PUPPY AND PROTECTING IT WHILE SHE FALLS. *LOL* I......DIED laughing. My spouse literally had to ask what I was reading and I could hardly get this out. tears. crying. done. I was like, is this a Harlequin all of a sudden? Has she ripped off her shirt and have a flowing mane of Fabio hair?
hahahah I'm laughing still thinking about it.
Anyway, more stuff happens in this one in Astoria, I was pretty riveted at times, and even though I need a break before book, I look forward to continuing. :)
4 Stars - solid listen, enjoyable adventure, love me some smart bad ass ladies
As in book one, our ladies continue to be pretty smart and making good decisions (for the most part). I really wanted Ms Luck to get into more of the nitty gritty of setting up to survive in a world without power but this book was probably even more heavily focused on romance. I am now itching for a good post-apocalypse book to scratch that itch - recommendations welcome. I might just have to start a re-listen of the Emberverse series.
This is the middle book of a trilogy but it pretty much wraps up everything with a bow and a nice happy ending. I am not feeling the need to move on to book three since I know all my babies are good and I am not sure I want to read about their lives getting all f'ed up again. lol.
3.5⭐️This was an enjoyable read being the second book in the series. The original characters are developed further and two new good characters are added. The book has a bunch of action and the dystopian theme is still going strong.
The story continued from the first book and we were reunited with old favourite characters and some new, darling characters. I was gushing and blushing when Taylor and Jackie finally "merged" as one. About freaking time... Jackie! I understood her hesitance, but c'mon, woman, another chapter without them getting together and I would have gone as mad as Taylor had almost gone. Suffice it say, I was relieved Jackie pulled her pretty little head out of her... Newcomers Sam and Laura have to be my favourite so far in the series. They reminded me of two shy girls who were unsure of themselves and of each other. Their courtship was sweet and the sex was even sweeter. I'm rooting for those two. Lexi and Anna are great and I find them to be the calm in the storm for everyone. I do, however, hate how Anna can very easily abandon Lexi to save other's. I know, I know, she's a healthcare provider, it's in her nature to act when in the face of chaos regarding human lives, but still, I always feel awful for Lexi being left behind.
Luck managed to keep us on our toes with one harrowing event after another. There is never a dull moment within the Darkness series.
As the world has descended into darkness, Taylor and her friends must confront fear, panic, frightening attacks and terrors of nature. They all are pushed to their limits but desperation and love can make a person strong. How do they cope when another catastrophe strikes and almost everything you once depends on is lost? Buy, read and see for yourself how it all works out. Like the first, this has a gripping plot with outstanding characters and beautiful love stories. I really, really hope that this series will continue.
Wow, this can’t be just KC’s second book? It is an amazing second installment of her Darkness Falls stories! I could read 10 stories about these badass women! The writing flows & the characters are easy to follow. I don’t know how she kept all of their voices straight, but even with a large cast, KC has written an outstanding story! Not at all muddled & easy to read! I loved both books & I can’t wait to see what she comes up with next!

I really love this series. Lexi and Anna, Taylor and Jackie, Alice, Laura and Sam. These are the perfect characters with a perfect storyline. This was a book with three beautiful love stories along with hanging by your seat adventures. Come on with the next book if there is one😉. I definitely recommend this book.
I guess part of this is my fault because I read the first book and didn’t like it, then decided I should try the second one and see if things got better. Nope. They did not.
What is so, SO frustrating is that this book has all these ideas that could be SO GOOD. Part of what makes apocalypse books great is the fall of society and people’s behavior after. There were power grabs, bad people in high positions, corruption - really, potential for this to be SO interesting. The solar storm causing more weird weather phenomena? Also really interesting! But our author still believes in Hallmark rules, so the cyclones never hit our characters and the bad guys never win ( or even get a shot off) . There’s just enough food and everyone is adapting and good always wins.
Also, do our characters grow? Don’t be silly! Jackie is taking showers in a barn stall, but she’s still not a lesbian, and we may never know why she’s struggling to accept that part of herself! Lexi is still a cardboard cut out! Taylor remains our resident Captain Hero, and Anna does not seem to struggle at all with putting in long hours as the hospital even though she finally has the baby she always wanted. Our new characters are kind of adorable - two virgins figuring out their attraction for the first time. I indulgently enjoyed Sam coming in on horseback to rescue our femmes ( 🙄 I know) but the will they/ won’t they lasted for two seconds before they became a couple. And then I thought maybe we’d have some fun exploratory sex where we’re awkward and clumsy but it’s just more hungry eyes and growling and finger blasting. Not a single scissor in sight.
It’s slightly more interesting than the first one, but again, low stakes, flat characters, and boring sex.
How am author get bring light, love, hope & humanity into a story of life after apocalypse - is truly a gift!
This story Darkness Remains (Book2) by KC Luck ells the tales of people picking up the pieces of life after Apocalypse. This tale exposed the darker side of humanity, taking advantage of people when they are most vulnerable - despicable. It also shows those rare moments when we see the good & people pulling together. It most difficult to show the light shining in during the darkest times. Love & chemistry as couples "soul mates" find one another. This tells the story of Sam meets Laura. Laura been watching & perhaps a little jealous of the love pouring out of Taylor & Jackie and Lexus, Anna and Joe. We get to see their relationship also evolve in book 2. V2, S2
Damn, I nearly lost it with this book! I spent the whole time tense as hell, so sure someone was going to die. I get that no one wanted the situation to escalate, and violence is generally not the answer, but also, this is a new world! And you have someone in front of you who is clearly dangerous, you know would do terrible things given the opportunity (which he then receives and shows exactly how he will take advantage of it), and who keeps threatening all of you. Sometimes, a preemptive move is safer than a reactionary one. I'm surprised at who stepped up to do it, but hey, you go girl.
Also, the dramatics in this one! 'Their soldier was dead.' Like, shit, that wording! And also...does no one know how to check for a pulse?? I didn't think that was a tough one. Maybe try that next time before pronouncing someone dead?
5 Stars for two reasons: 1) for those of is who appreciate a book that the author takes the time and effort involved in editing and spell checking; and 2) because this is a wonderful well written story. The author brings just the right amount of heart thumping, life threatening events that blend well with strong, caring loving characters. I don't talk about the story because you can read that in Amazon's "about". Read both books. You won't be disappointed! Ms. Luck any thoughts and a third sequel? Personally, I would love to know what happens next to the other characters that came after Lexi and Anna, and how the town of Astoria fares after the next northern lights. Hmmm!!!
I like the first part more than the second part. I expected to see more world view setting in the second part, but the author didn't do it. The world just lost power, not returned to primitive society. Of course, I am happy that women can realize the importance of power in critical moments, but the author only let them hold on for five minutes and then gave up. Why? ? ? ? Everything is too confusing. The author has a good writing style and can be more patient to build a more specific story. What a pity.
In the end, we still don’t see any little girls in the second part. Where are all the little girls in America? Only little boys. It seems that this is a book suitable for little boys to read.
Fabulous post-apocalyptic read with lots of romance. Fantastic sequel to Darkness Falls. Brilliant cover by the multi-talented May Dawney. Some great new characters are brought into the story. I totally love Sam and Laura. New problems emerge as it appears help is not on the way. Taylor hears of storms coming in from the sea. A perfect blend of romance with lots and lots of exciting action. This is the third book by this author I had to read in one sitting. I particularly liked the ending but can’t say why due to spoilers. K C Luck is an extremely talented writer and is on my favourite author list. I highly recommend this fantastic book.
SAPPHIC BOOK BINGO: favorite trope, disaster, full-time writer, established couple, meet-cute, unusual job, different orientation, butch character, possibly more categories.
There was more excitement and tension in this second book in the series. A new character to the ensemble led to the creation of another sapphic coupling. The town and neighbors came together to help each other thrive. Another disaster struck the town and outlying areas. The blended family grew even closer to each other.
It's definitely another must-read, and I'm eager to start the third book in the series.
This was such a fun book. I couldn't put it down. I enjoyed the first book equally as well. The sad thing is the solar flares that cause the problems is ping to happen. I'm a retired scientist, who helped design the space shuttle. I know what I'm talking about. Solar flares of that magnitude are happening regularly. Laws of probability state all probabilities that exist, no matter as unlikely will happen. One day they won't miss Earth and every bit of elects will be fried. 😬
I am so glad I continued reading the series after being disappointed with the first installment. Much of what was missing in book 1 was delivered, including a more organic plot showing the growing band of main characters deal with the survivalist challenges thrown their way and some great character development. Even the intimate scenes were worked into the story rather than feeling forced. And I loved the addition of Sam to the central cast.
After reading the first book in the Darkness Trilogy, I didn't know what to expect from this book, except that it was going to be good. It was exceptional. It's a page turner for sure. K.C. outdid herself once again with the ability to have a reader's emotions swirling from excited, to heart-melting, to frightened, to anger and all the rest that come in between. Thanks K.C. for sharing your wonderful talent. I'm off now to read the third book in the series, and I can't wait to start. I would recommend this book as a spectacular story and one that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
The sequel to the first book brought in two new characters who have fewer problems accepting their emotional world than Jackie and Taylor. The group expands to include an agricultural specialist, Taylor takes on a new job and a veterinarian. This is about accepting the changed world and moving on. But the fear of those who take advantage of the situation is also confirmed. The wedding at the end of the book gave me a positive and optimistic feeling that in the event of a real-life disaster, the people who stick together can make it.
These are the first two lesbian centred post apocalypse book I’ve read. And I’ve read a lot of this genre. If you’re looking for action packed dark thrilling PA books then these are not it.
It’s overall pretty nice and feel good read. Nothing dark and the bad guys are not that bad or scary. They didn’t win much either. The ladies and their party always win. The overall tone is feel good and comfy. A nice break from all the dark PA books I usually read.
KC Luck continues the story of surviving without utilities, a federal, state, or local government, or banking system. She has gathered a group of people whose only common trait is a willingness to work with others to survive a crisis that appears to have no end in sight. Add weather anomalies like rain, tornados, and waterspouts. What will happen if ocean waterspouts move inland? When you think the group was met all possible roadblocks and walls, lookout. Another challenge awaits.
