Lady and her pet cat Lion have settled into their new life in the town of Dark Lake. Well, they’ve settled in as best they can. A person never gets quite used to the revelation that most everything they knew to be true about the world is a lie. The idea that magic exists and that she’s to be trained as a witch is still a very new concept to Lady!
Magic isn’t all it’s cut out to be either. Even witches have to have day jobs. When a reclusive old woman dies of seemingly natural causes, Lady finds her interest piqued. The old woman has stipulated in her will that her considerable fortune will be left to whoever ferrets out her killer.
With the help of some friends, Lady is on the case! Never mind that the death looks like natural causes, she could use that money. Besides, if there’s one thing she’s learned about Dark Lake, it’s that almost nothing is ever as it initially seems.
Second Volume of the Dark Lake Chronicles Series. Approx. 51,000 words in length. It is a standalone (reading prior or future volumes not required to enjoy the book, no cliffhanger).
The town is all in a frenzy trying to solve a murder, though the victim is the only one who really believes that she was actually murdered. Of course, a pile of inheritance money makes most people a little bit more open to the idea. While Lady is still fairly sceptical about some aspects of magic and the paranormal, she finds herself becoming more convinced as more things happen around Dark Lake. I really enjoyed the latest book in this new series. Lady is smart and I think she will get even more interesting as she learns about her witchy craft. Dark Lake is full of intriguing characters with more of their mysterious natures revealed in this book. A great start. A funeral and a will reading leaves the town in an uproar. The fortune of the wealthiest woman in town will go to the person that solves her murder! If no solution is found then it will all go to her daughter. Most people are shocked. Was she murdered? As the news sinks in, she and two others form an alliance to find the killer. Get enough money to help at the library and give both girls financial freedom. All this has to be done out of work hours as Mrs Poole still wants her to work for her keep. Did the history of the house have anything to do with why the old woman died? What are the secrets that are being hidden in the mansion and at the boarding house? A great plot but the explanation was really weak and left more questions then answers. Shame,
We start out with Lady trying on clothes for a witches funeral. Ms. Poole had dressed Lady just like her. Ugh. Last feels bad enough going to a funeral of someone she doesn't know, but Ms. Poole decides they're sitting way up front. You have to go to Lucette Antonie's funeral to be allowed into the will reading and of course you must be there to receive anything for her will. Lucette owes Ms. Poole money so she's going and Lady has to go too. There's a big surprise at the reading of the will and it creates a new mystery. Naturally Lady, her friends and other people have to investigate too. The plot is great with some surprise twists and there's spooky parts and good laughs too. I loved this second book in the Dark Lake Chronicles. It's looking like the author's best series yet! Definitely a good paranormal cozy. I'm hoping for another one soon.
Ms.Millie Poole has Lady dress just like her for the funeral of Lucette Antonie. She left in her will, that the person who proves she was murdered will receive her estate, house, money and all. Otsuya, Lady, and Crispin decide to join together to find the answer. Ms. Poole, isn't impressed by this and think they are wasting their time. The more they look into the history of Lucette Antonie, the stranger things become. There are surprised through out this story that will make you sit back and go "Hmmm". Can they solve the mystery or are they wasting their time? An excellent paranormal story! I voluntarily read an ARC of this book.
A enjoyable second book in this interesting and intriguing series. It had a great storyline with some unexpected twists in the plot and interesting characters. I liked the vast majority of the character's especially Mrs Poole, although occasionally I find the character of Lady a bit childish, but she has grown on me. Dark Lake is a very different and interesting place to live.
I received an advanced read of this book,it no way affected my review of this book. I love this new series from Raven Snow. I want to move to this town.
