The Men of Canter's Handyman #1

Black Leather & Knuckle Tattoos

Rate this book
Kindergarten teacher, Troy Canter, fell hopelessly in love with leather and tattoos at the impressionable age of sixteen when cuddly, bad-boy Win interviewed for a job with the family business, Canter Handymen of all Trades. No one compared to the large man and never would. A decade later, Brent, Troy’s father, falls ill and he needs to take over the business for a while. Interacting Day in and day out with sexy Win is a cruel punishment.

Winston Sanchez hadn’t done a thing right in his life, except interviewing for a handyman job for Brent Canter. He loved his job, but an attraction to Troy Canter complicates things. As Troy ran the business while Brent fights cancer, it has thrown the man right in his lap. When an unexpected development in the package of a four-year-old daughter throws Win into a panic, Troy comes to the rescue.

Can a man who doesn’t think he’s worth much let go enough to open himself to the love of a man who thinks he’s worth everything?

I am blown away by this incredibly cute novella!

The title didn’t exactly fill me with confidence that I’d like this, but OMG, it was spectacular!

Let me start off my review, though, by saying that the editing was awful. So many typos and misspelled words, I wonder if an editor has even looked at this.

But then, the text is just the body of a book, the soul is in the story. And this story sure had a beautiful soul with lots of breathing and living characters in it. I am so in love.

description

And the reason why I love this so much is the fact that it’s a slow romance. With a tattooed biker and a much younger boy looking for love, you’d think that half of the story will take place in bed, but no, this story was EXACTLY why I love reading romance and featured WHAT I love about romance.

And best of all, our hero Win isn’t a gym shaped Apollo, but a handsome middle-aged guy with a – dare I say it – normal body.

Soft fingers slid beneath his t-shirt and stroked over his belly, and he instantly sucked it in. “Don’t do that; I like this.” Troy practically purred and ran his fingers through the curls covering his slightly soft belly.

The story is about Win Sanchez, who spent 8 years in prison after he killed a guy in a drunken bar brawl at age 18. At 26, he gets out and Brent Canter takes a chance on the young man and hires him for his workshop. Win spends 10 years there becoming friends with Brent and his son Troy, who grows up to be a kindergarten teacher.

Win isn’t a saint, though, sleeping himself through the beds of countless women, never settling down. Until one day a social worker presents him with a little girl who happens to be his biological daughter.

If only there was a guy around who knew how to handle kids!

Troy is totally happy to help Win out and before anyone realizes it, Win and Troy are sharing a domestic bliss that Win feels he doesn’t deserve. He doesn’t know, though, that Troy has had a soft spot for the older biker bad boy for a long time – and little Isabella might be the key to finally finding each other.

This was pure bliss. Emotional writing, clear reasoning and relatable motivations.

It can hardly get better for me, but let’s check out the next book. I can’t wait to read the story of Brent and Miller, Troy’s best friend. I just love me some age gap romance, LOL.

5 stars and a favorite!

Told in dual POV, 3rd person, it’s the first installment in "The Men of Canter's Handyman" series and can be read as a standalone. It’s a quick read, almost angst-free with an age gap. Such a sweet story, one of those that feels good and leaves you swooning! Looking forward to reading book two. Overall, loved it and hope you enjoy it as well!

Troy and Win were a sweet couple once they get together. Troy has been pining for the older Win ever since he met the guy when he was 16. Win is the tattooed ex-con who gets a sweet surprise in the form of his beautiful 4 year old daughter he knew nothing about. They finally become the family they all deserve.

Dabney is an auto-buy author for me. Her books are easy reads without a lot of angst and drama. There's not necessarily a lot to them but they are like a warm blanket..comfortable and nice. I also love how her characters are diverse and not picture perfect models and slim and gorgeous. They’re average and don’t have “perfect” bodies.

I can't wait to see who's next in this series. There's a hot silver-fox who I think is itching to get his hands on a boisterous twink and a few of Win's friends who need to find the right man.

**** With his dad, Brent, suffering through cancer treatments, Troy, 26, is manning the office for his dad. Troy is usually a Kindergarten teacher.

Latino, Winston/Win has been working for Brent 10 years,

when Troy was 16, and they are "family."
Troy has kept his crush on Win secret, because Win is off limits, and straight, but the bad boy with scruff, leather, tattoos and azure eyes is still Troy's fantasy. Troy's cutie pie friend, Miller is gay and pines for straight silver fox, Brent.

I love these characters, the romance, the anticipation, and the interesting tale. The progression of our tale is steady, but the sexy times are a slow burn. Brent is getting better, and we see inner thoughts of our men, with the sad past of Win, and we see deep emotions, long talks, and unspoken needs.

Win is presented with a 4 yr. old daughter, Bella, and then we have more definition of the story later on. Troy and Brent are helping Win immediately, so the huge life changing event will be smoother for Win. The girl is a doll, and as the time passes, Troy and Win are super close, and that leads to confessions, and a relationship.

We see Win's first time M/M fun, and so much more. Someone didn't like the cover, and I agree, so I put in my own guys pics.
Very romantic, tender and loving. I liked the opposites and the age difference, too.

I liked this author's Twirled World Ink series !
I recommend this entertaining book.
ENJOY !

DNF about halfway. I just kept asking myself why I kept reading this and when I couldn't come up with a good answer I moved on. Oh, and the cover doesn't represent either MC as far as I can tell.

It's the book equivalent of basic chicken nuggets.

I was in the mood for something sweet, age gap, emotional, and what I had actually found was the second book in this series. But I like to read in order, so I started with this one, and I'm so glad I did! I haven't read anything from this author before, but I look forward to looking back through past and reading future releases, because I enjoyed the writing in this.

Troy has been in lust and love with his father's friend and co-worker, Win, who is older than him. When Win gets the surprise of his life in the form of a daughter he didn't know he had, he reaches out to Troy, who is a teacher, for help. This throws the two of them together and emotions start running high when both are hiding their true feelings from the other.

I really enjoyed the emotion in this story, the feeling of family being what you make of it, and Troy and Win were so sweet once they got together. Troy's friend, Miller, also stole the scene and I'm starting his book right away!

Troy & Win were definitely sweet on each other regardless of the age gap. There were some nice elements to the book but I don’t think I quite got what I expected- the cover also did not represent the characters in any way. 2.5 for me - halfway 😊

Loved it!

Troy has had a crush on his dad's employee since he was sixteen. Now, ten years later, his dad is battling cancer and he's forced to be around him more and his feelings are far beyond a crush, but Win is straight, right?
Well...apparently, he's bi... but the life he lived before, and the way he grew up, made it impossible for Win to explore his bisexuality, or his feelings for his boss's son, Troy.

Just when things are getting harder for the both of them to ignore, a dead one-weekend-stand has a stranger on Win's doorstep telling him about the 4 year old daughter he never knew about.
Now, I thought this Grover woman was bossy, entitled and demanding. I didn't like her. I don't understand he turnaround, and I don't understand how she just made things happen like she did... but, after dumping the kid of with Win, she just disappears. So, where does Win go with a new baby and not a clue what to do?? To Troy!

Troy has always wanted his own family, and he fell instantly in love with Win's little girl. She'd never had anyone in her life that showed her the attention that Troy did, so she loved him immediately too. I loved the interaction between both men and Bella, she was adorable, and we all know how I feel about hot guys and babys. There's nothin hotter, in my opinion....
So, Win relied on Troy a lot, and Troy and his dad accepted both Bella and Win with open arms. Before they knew it, Win and Troy was a little family, Bella even called Troy's dad Grandpa.

I did feel like the book cover didn't show Win like I imagined him, but maybe that was just me. And I also felt like the repetitive waiting for the other shoe to drop and not trusting their happiness was a bit exhausting. Also, both guys seemed clueless to how the other felt, when it was so blatantly obvious. Kind of like Miller and Brent, i'm curious to see where that goes!
I also hope we get something with Clay as well.

Overall, very little angst, only problems are between the two H's themselves and their overthinking and doubting themselves... If you love cute little girls and hot guys... just...do yourself a favor and read this one. Cute ending as well.

I liked it ... some things took a long time and sometimes the time jumps took away a too long period.

but all in all it was a nice romance with two very likeable characters

Kinky Title

The title is probably the most kinkish thing about this book. So if you are expecting some kinks, look away. But if you are looking for some bisexual awakening and HEA from long time crush (ten years!) This is it! So yes, my heart did melt a bit when they finally got together.

As a fan of biker main characters, I am quite disappointed with Win's character development. The author's portrayal of the characters seems lacking in my POV. Wins back story as an excon, neglected child and biker to be a bad ass kind of main character wasn't properly portrayed by the author. Troy's character as a loving kindergarten teacher isn't very well depicted as well.

A great story with very engaging characters. These men has some huge communication problems that hurt them. The insertion of Belle into the story was clumsy for me. Win and Troy were both well fleshed out and very likable. I cannot wait to read about Miller and Brent.

4.5 Absolutely loved!! This book hit all the right notes. Loved Troy and Win. Loved the addition of little Isabella. Pacing was perfect. No cliched, overdone, sappy mess here, just two men who have fought years of attraction to be together. Win is Troy's dad's employee and 10yrs older than Troy. As an ex-con, he's always felt the boss's son was off limits. He's bi unknown to Troy, who assumed he was straight. Troy has wanted Win since he was 16yrs old. At 26, it's now or never. Definitely a book I will read again. Off to read Brent and Miller's book.

This is a new author to me and I enjoyed this book (although there were definitely some editing issues). It was sweet and the characters were realistic which I really like. They didn't have perfect bodies and model good looks. The daughter was cute and fairly realistic. I'd read another book from this author - in fact I'm intrigued enough to check out the next book in this series especially since I love a good age gap book.

Really a 3 1/2 Star Treat

This one drags a bit, especially in the beginning which is a bit of an issue when it finally opens up to some nice potting and sweeet romancing. It is also the beginning of a new series which, if you pay attention, is likely to feature a number of men in this book.

The focus in this one is how Brent Canter, a hot 50-year-old entrepreneur, is cared for by his late 20s son Troy, a schoolteacher who has taken a leave of absence to help his dad recover from cancer.

Just as dedicated to that task, but not as confident, is Winston Sanchez, a mid 30s employee who is super dedicated to Brent, who took a chance on the ex-con 10 years prior, and who has been secretly bisexual and in love with Troy--who has been pining for Win all these years as well.

Enter a serious tragedy which leaves Win as a new father to a four-year-old pixie, Troy as an almost full time caretaker for her, Brent as suddenly a faux grandpa.

It's all very cute, and the plot is moved along with a bunch of episodes where Troy's best friend, Miller, pines for Brent, whom he has been hot for since he was a teen, but knows it's hopeless because daddy is straight.

Oh, is this going to lead to a sequel?

Actually, this is a sweet, almost syrupy, book that, indeed, does lead to a sequel, which I bought when I finished this one. So this one is worth the read.

PLEASE READ FIRST MY RATING SYSTEM!!!

To my ratings (thanks to amazon I had to change it again and 'upgrade' it a little bit.
My old 3* is now a 3,5* and clicked with a 4*):

5* - very very good and rare (it would be a Blow-
Away-book like 'Liberty' from Seth King,
'Save the kids' series from EM Leya or
'Jesse's Smile' from Angelique Jurd), it's like
an A+

4* - very good and will be often reread and is a
WOW-book with interesting plot and surprises
(like most of Andrew Grey books) it's like an A

3,5* - a really good book, which will be reread a few
times (most romances where you can enjoy
for relaxing and during waiting times in
hospitals). I can recommend them definitively!
It's like an B+

3* - it could be more then a one-time-reader, but
not really an often reread book

2* - it was ok to read, but it's more a one-time-
reader (i wouldn't recommend it heartily, but
it was ok) It's like a C-, D

1* - sorry, but that isn't really a book for me (too
many mistakes, not nice plot, illogical, so an
absolut NO-GO). It's like failure in the whole
line, dismissed, repeat the class

It was refreshing that one of the MC's wasn't a buff muscled God Amoung Men. Described a few times as "soft" and caught sucking in his stomach. I even liked the way the little girl kicked off the romance in the story (usually kids in the stories are annoying or chasing a Hetero lifestyle dream).

Both characters seemed to run hot/cold on the romance and made it hard to believe either of them were fighting for the relationship. They would be waiting for the other shoe to drop but soon were arguing with the other that they weren't going anywhere.

Early in the book references were made to tattoos on one of the MC's, peeking out of shirts, but there was never a reveal of what tattoos he had or what they were.

The POV's could have been stronger, often had to go back and try to figure out who was saying or doing what...with varying degrees of success.

Age gap, first time gay, sweet romance.

Oh I loved this. Win and Troy were beautiful together. Troy has loved Win since he first met him when he was sixteen. He always thought Win was straight. Win is bi, but had never been with a man. He also felt that his past and his age were barriers to being with Troy, not to mention that Troy is his boss's son. When Win is presented with a four year old daughter he never knew about, he enlists the help of nursery teacher , Troy. This is my first JM Dabney book and I am looking forward to the next book in this series.

The beginning of a great series!

I loved this story of Win and Troy was perfect from beginning to end! Your heart just breaks because Win doesn't think he is worthy of Troy. Watching them both over come their insecurities and find a true and everlasting love was brilliant and I just can't wait to see more of this series.

Fast-paced, but compelling characters

I was rooting for Troy and Win from the beginning. They both approach each other with a sweet vulnerability. Once the surprise appears time does go on fast forward—we jump weeks then months, but I still felt engaged as they slowly got more honest with each other.

I am really looking forward to Brent & Miller’s story.

Love at long last...

Troy has been mad for Win since he was sixteen years old. It's been 10 years and the older man has never even hinted that he was interested. Then suddenly Win has custody of a child he didn't even know about and in a panic he turns to Troy for help. It was truly a joy to watch these two get over their hang-ups and admit to their feelings.

BL&KT started off with promise but didn't hold up. It felt like it was written in a rush, and not edited fully. For example, descriptions of Win are all over: thick, slim, middle aged spread, or muscled. There was very little heat between the characters, unfortunately it dragged down the rest of the book.
