4☆ Hard Hitting, Suspenseful Dark Thriller

First of all I want to start by saying how intriguing the cover is, it really drew me in, I wanted to know more.

WITHOUT RULES is a hard hitting, non stop action packed, thriller, it is dark and graphic and does contain child abuse, which some readers might find sensitive.

However it is a very gripping read, and you can't help needing to read on to find out what will happen next.

I really enjoyed WITHOUT RULES once I got into the story.
It did take me while to settle into the flow, as at times the writing was disjointed, and there is a fair amount of characters, I had to back track a little.
But don't let that put you off as the plot is gritty and compulsive.

I think the blurb pretty much sums up what this suspenseful book is about and I don't want to potentially give anything away.

But what I will say is the characters are all deeply flawed, not particularly likeable. But that's the whole point!
You're not supposed to like them, and Andrew has evoked those emotions towards the characters perfectly.

The pace is non stop action, it does require a little concentration (I made use of highlighting on kindle) but as the story progresses the plot just falls into place nicely.

I really enjoy books that sometimes push me out of my comfort zone and make me feel on edge. Andrew has done a fantastic job at bringing uncomfortable and difficult subjects to the surface and making them hard hitting. Of course this isn't for everyone, there is violence, bad language, child abuse and sex.

Overall a compulsive, dark, gritty read that had me turning the pages.
If you enjoy dark crime thrillers, full of suspense, flawed characters and a powerfully hard hitting plot then you will want to pick up a copy of WITHOUT RULES by Andrew Field.

Thank you to Dampebbles Tours for this copy which I reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

Last week, in the many tributes to Elmore Leonard that I saw floating around on what would've been his birthday, I came across this quotation: "I don't judge in my books. I don't have to have the antagonist get shot or the protagonist win. It's just how it comes out. I'm just telling a story." Which seemed awfully appropriate as I was in the closing chapters of Without Rules at the time. I'm not suggesting that there's anything Leonard-esque to Field's novel*, but they definitely were working from the same ethos.

This book starts off showing you that it's about as far as you can get from a cozy -- a hit man and his accomplice on the run after a disastrous (yet successful) job take shelter in something between a brothel and a porn studio while waiting for extraction. Their unwilling hostess supplies them with booze, a laundry machine, and some meaningless sex in the meantime. When the opportunity presents, she tries to convince the hitman to rescue both herself and her daughter from their situation -- being forced by her father to live and work in this place since she was about her daughter's age. Naturally, it's this same father who hired the hitman to take out one of his clients before he could be flipped by the police.

Things get messier from there -- no, really. Soon, we're plunged into a mare's nest of police cover-ups, police investigations, evidence tampering, evidence planting, blackmail, murder, pedophilia rings, international drug dealers, and real estate fraud. This particular night ends in betrayals, deaths, lives and careers being ruined, missing people and near-death escapes. The book will then lurch ahead a couple of years to witness the chaos and destruction left by that night and how it's altered, prospered and ruined lives -- and attempts will be made by several to rectify that situation. The novel will then jump ahead as the events of part two have left even more trouble and chaos in their wake for the survivors to try to deal with the aftermath.

There's a fine line between complex and convoluted -- this novel doesn't tip-toe down that line, it dances on it. When it falters, it typically lands on the convoluted side before resuming its jig. There are arguably too many characters running around -- and few of them are fully rounded-out. But, largely, I'm okay with that -- because the more I get to know just about any of these characters the less I wanted to know them at all. These are ugly people in the midst of ugly businesses.

With one or two climactic exceptions, the action is believable, the evil is all too real -- there's no criminal mastermind stroking his cat while the world burns. Instead we have several depraved individuals scraping to make their fortunes greater -- or just to survive. There's one well-timed Diabolus ex Machina that was hard to swallow that was necessary to set up the book's conclusion, but otherwise the action stayed within the bounds of credulity.

In a capricious world, it's odd to find so many characters talking about justice -- generally how it's impossible to find -- but just about every one of these characters has a lot to say about it. There is an irony there for the careful reader to appreciate.

Minor spoiler: There's no happily ever afters here. No redemption arcs. No one wears a white hat. A couple of characters do ride off into the sunset, but not in any real sense of victory or joy. The cynical among us -- many would prefer to be called realists -- would say that this is an accurate reflection of life. No justice, no just desserts, bad things happen to bad people, those who intend to be heroes become villains, a villain or two will find themselves doing something heroic, and everyone's out for themselves and a profit. In a very noir world, Andrew Field offers us a very noir novel.

---
* That's not a ding on Field, there's pretty much no one who can write something Leonard-esque. And it's generally embarrassing when they try.

I really enjoyed this story but I did find that the chapters jumping around made it a little confusing at times, but if you persist as I did, it does all come together at the end!

I thought the book had great characterisation, it was well written and the story had a good flow. It was a book I read in just over a day.

The plot is great but it is disturbing in places and won't be for everyone's tastes but I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed it - it was quite a different book from what I was expecting and that is definitely a positive!

4 stars from me for this one, a well written and gripping story!

Without Rules has been quite a disturbing read and definitely won't be your cup of tea if you're easily offended by sexually graphic language, particularly as it involves children. There are parts that make for very uncomfortable reading.
China is a feisty character and has a particularly foul mouth, but that's somewhat unsurprising considering the abuse she has endured from the age of six. She is determined to make someone pay for what she has been subjected to and I was praying she would find the justice she deserves and those accountable would get their comeuppance.
I have to admit that this book was quite confusing to start with as we are introduced to a lot of characters in quick succession and there's a lot going on which doesn't seem to make much sense at the very beginning. Don't let this put you off though as it all becomes clear along the way and I found myself totally gripped.
There are many characters throughout this story who literally made my stomach turn. Arrogant, sadistic, self-absorbed people who think they are above the law and untouchable, particularly if they have money and/or are in positions of power. What makes it all the more sickening is knowing that there are people like this getting away with crimes like these in the real world and some probably never get the punishment they deserve, until they meet their maker. It's heart-breaking to think how many victims there are out there who never get the justice they deserve because they are too frightened to speak out or have been successfully convinced that no-one would believe them anyway.
Without Rules is an extremely fast-paced story with very short, sharp chapters told from the perspectives of various characters. It certainly kept me on the edge of my seat!
Many thanks for my review copy.

Going to start off by saying if you are easily offended or easily uncomfortable then this book may not be for you. However, if you want to live dangerously….well hello to you!

So helping to close the tour today on this awesome book Without rules, and one thing i learned there are NO rules!

I need a different analogy than a rollercoaster, so this book is like getting in a life with no breaks! You just do not know what is going to happen next and if it will stop. (All in a good way).

I have been really excited about this book and what it entails when I saw two words professional and hitman in the blurb! I knew I was on to a winner and I was not disappointed.

The writing is exquisite as you are drawn into the pages so you are going to need to set time aside for this book, and you will need to concentrate. From the opening pages, the ride does not relent and I couldn’t let the book go.

You have a fair few characters to get your head around, but I loved having loads of people thrown at me (Not like that and not literally!). I was excited to see who was going to do what and when. And China, well, I was sold on her, she is feisty and boy does she love a few choice words, what is not to love!

The writing is blunt and no words get minced at all, the scenes are graphic and there are a few events that some people might not enjoy (Hence the content warning). So, maybe I am perverse but everything in the book fitted in with the context, yes it was uncomfortable to read don’t get me wrong, but we did see some reasons to why even if they weren’t logical or right!

This is one thing I love about blog tours, you find authors you might not necessarily have discovered on your own, and I have found an author I am not letting out of my sights that is for sure. I look forward to what is coming up next!

Okay. Right. I’ve had to take a little pause and a breather and a step back to think about what I am going to say about this book before I write my review because it has me, in the words of the great AC/DC, a little thunderstruck.

Anyway, now that I have had time to digest the book, I can say that it is one of the most original, interesting, disturbing, gripping, challenging and memorable books I have read this year.

I’ll be honest, when I started it I wasn’t’t sure if I was going to enjoy it and if I’d picked it up before I started blogging, I might have put it to one side to come back to later, but reading to a deadline forces you to persevere and I am really glad I did because once I got in to it I was totally hooked right through to the end.

Looking back, I can pinpoint the issue I had at the start. I started reading this book late at night when I was quite tired, and it was a mistake because this book requires a certain degree of concentration, especially at the beginning when we are introduced to a barrage of new characters in quick succession without a huge amount of introduction as to who they are and we learn a host of startling facts about them extremely quickly. It’s an information overload, verbal machine-gunning if you will, that requires a wide awake brain to process.

Once I came back to the book in the bright light of day, I was quickly sucked in to the story. The plot is extremely fragmented, it jumps around like a demented firecracker and you have to be quick to follow it, but I don’t mind a bit of an intellectual challenge in a novel. Beats sudoku for keeping the old grey matter from atrophying.

None of the characters in this book are going to win any popularity contests. They are all fairly damaged, and many of them are downright nasty, but they are written with personality and intelligence so, likeable or not, you want to keep reading about them and hope for either their redemption or their downfall.

This book is fairly blunt and brutal. There is violence from the very beginning, very bald sexual imagery, rape, graphic murder, sexual abuse and a lot of other stuff that might trigger the more sensitive reader. The author seems unapologetic about it, which makes more sense as you read through and learn more about the characters and their past and what influences their behaviour but be warned. If this were an album it would be labelled ‘Parental Advisory.’

I would normally tell you whether or not I enjoyed this book but I’m not sure ‘enjoy’ is the word I would use here. This book smacks you in the teeth and forces you to pay attention. I was carried on the journey, through all the twists, turns, inversions and barrel rolls, right to the end. It is one I will remember and I am glad I read it. I would recommend it to people with open minds and strong constitutions.

I received this free ARC from a book reviewing website called Hidden Gems, in exchange for an honest and voluntary review. I signed up a few weeks ago, which in hindsight was silly, as I am not short of books to read, and have enough deadlines as it is. Unlike NetGalley, you are expected to provide a review within a week. I did like the idea of supporting newer indie authors, and was curious as to the quality of books available. This was the first book I requested/received. I was intrigued by the summary and liked the cover art.

Without Rules is a suspense thriller set in an unspecified English city. Chip Mackie is a golfer who just missed the big time, a gangster property developer, and a paedophile. When an associate is caught in a police sting, he arranges for him to be executed to avoid exposure, but the hit goes wrong, and a police officer and four year old bystander are killed in the crossfire. The killers show up at Chip's daughter China's house, and she sees an opportunity to escape her life of abuse, by seducing Jak, a cold-blooded assassin suffering from PTSD as a result of his time in the armed forces. Initially reluctant to get involved, when Jak finds out she has been systematically sexually abused since the age of six, and her daughter is approaching the same age, he decides he is willing to risk his own life to save her, but evil men, with wealth, power, and protection from corrupt policemen, will do whatever they can to escape justice.

This was told from multiple points of view, mostly third person, but Jak's chapters are first person present, which was jarring and annoying. The writing is poor, with short simplistic sentences, grammatical errors and continuity mistakes: it seriously needs better editing. The author drip-feeds information, unnecessarily in my opinion, possibly for shock value, and characters are mentioned early who do not come into play until much later on, making it hard to recall who's who. This, and the tendency for characters to suddenly start reminiscing about the past, made the story confusing and difficult to follow. The copy I received had terrible formatting too.

This was a shame because the actual story was not bad. There are three acts, separated in time, and again, this wasn't initially clear. There is brutal sex, including rape and repeated references to child abuse, moderate violence, plentiful misogyny, and lots of bad language, if these are things which bother you. There were a few sympathetic characters, but not everyone's story arc is resolved, nor are several key subplots, like what actually happened to Deets. I liked the epilogue though, and China's evolution from victim to survivor.

Overall I can't recommend this, unless you like very basic writing. I think the author has potential as a storyteller, and with help this could've been an exciting thriller. It is published on Amazon on 17th Septemer 2018.

ONE INCREDIBLE ADVENTURE!!!
Man, talk about hitting the ground running. This is one intense, action packed, hard hitting, thrilling, page turning, smooth flowing read that captivates from the start. All the twists and turns, ups and downs, along with a few glitches here and there make for one enjoyable experience. You get all the excitement and drama that holds your attention until the last word. Suspense and danger builds throughout as tension spirals and emotions run rampant. You hang on every word, frozen to the edge of your seat. The characters are well developed, believable and so realistic you feel like you can just reach out and touch them. Their personalities are unique with qualities and traits that balance each other. The scenes are descriptive and detailed it really pulls this bad boy together beautifully. Andrea did a fantastic job bringing this read to life. Great job Andrew, thanks for sharing this awesome read with us.

Without Rules
By Andrew Field

2 stars

Great start, but then the book bogs down with confusing details, and becomes dry.

When a professional hitman turns up at Candy’s World to hide, China Mackie discovers her plan to flee from her abusive father has tragically backfired. A gruesome bloodbath has left four people dead on the streets of a northern city centre on a cold wet Sunday morning. China knows she’s next to die. Unless she is more ruthless than everyone else. She must improvise fast. Seduce her father’s assassin. Plead her case so he helps her escape in a fight to the death where rules don’t matter but the consequences do.

Thank you to Netgalley for providing a review copy in return for an honest review. All opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.

This is not an ordinary story, with its jumping perspective every short chapter. This may seem messy, but keep reading, it's all in a timeline and making sense (sort of). A lot of violence, sex and other rated stuff, so if you are sensitive: stay clear!

The story has a whole range of colourful characters, which are well described. Many of them are really not very nice guys, and this is clear in the writing. China is a very sympathetic character, with one hell of a history, whilst Jak is interesting and enigmatic. Would have loved to learn more about him.

The book went in a direction I didn't expect, and the ending was a surprise to me too. An interesting read.
