The Unknowing

Rate this book
When a young woman awakes in a warehouse in the middle of nowhere, all she has is the words 'GET OUT' written on her arm and a total loss of all memory.

Calling herself Laurel, she sets off to not just escape from her mysterious kidnapper, but to unravel who she is, who had taken her and just why she is so important that she's being chased by creatures that belong in myth, not the real world.

Teaming up with free spirit Harry, they'll face off against the impossible in the quest to recover Laurel's memories and with it, the knowledge to fight back.

This is the first book I've read by S.J. Matthews, looking forward to further outings!

I found it thoroughly refreshing to read a book with a female protagonist that wasn't a thinly veiled romance novel. Absolutely believable characters, Laurel kicks arse! Can't say too much witout spoliers but I'd like to see what could be done with a second Laurel story.

I just finished my second read through of the book because the first time I was so caught up in the story and the details of it. I am absolutely in love with modern retellings of the stories of my gods and how they work in the world now and this book gives that in spades. It doesn't hit you over the head with it, but it gives you such a connection to the gods of tellings and the modern world they now live in.

After reading it and immersing myself in a well told and thoughtful story, I wanted to read it again so that I could look at the wording, the phrasing, the way the author told the story. It's so well crafted, and I enjoyed it immensely. The author does especially well in showing combat without it being like a dance guide, leading you step by step.

An interesting story that could have used explanations for those of us who are not Greek mythology experts or fight scene lovers.
