Murder in the Mix #2

Bobbing for Bodies

Rate this book
This book can be read as a STANDALONE novel. *A laugh out loud cozy mystery by New York Times Bestseller Addison Moore* This book can be enjoyed on its own without reading the other books in the series but for the full experience they are fun to read in order!

My name is Lottie Lemon, and I see dead pets. Okay, so I see dead people on occasion, too, but it’s mostly sweet, fuzzy, long-departed cuties that I see clinging by their previous owner’s side. Trust me when I say this is not a good sign. So, when I spot an adorable, fuzzy, little squirrel skipping around at the grand opening for my new bakery, I about lose it, until I realize it’s a perky little poltergeist only visible to yours truly. But there are so many people at the grand opening it’s hard to discern who exactly might be in danger—that is, until I follow the little creature right out the back and straight into another homicide. It’s horrible to see your friend lying there vacant of life. Honey Hollow will never be the same.

Lottie Lemon has a brand new bakery to tend to, a budding romance with perhaps one too many suitors, and she has the supernatural ability to see dead pets—which are always harbingers for ominous things to come. Throw in the occasional ghost of the human variety, a string of murders, and her insatiable thirst for justice, and you’ll have more chaos than you know what to do with.

Living in the small town of Honey Hollow can be murder.

** Read as part of the Murder in the Mix Boxed Set. **

Bobbing for Bodies is book two in the Murder in the Mix series by Addison Moore.

It’s the grand opening of Lottie Lemon’s bakery, she’s dating Noah, her mom has a boyfriend, and her friend Hunter is found dead behind her bakery.

In this novel we see how insecure Lottie is in her relationship with Noah. The romance and romance issues are more front and center then the mystery. We do do some sleuthing around with Lottie and it was surprising some of the secrets we learn about Hunter, but the romance was out their more then the mystery. I prefer it to be the other way around in my cozy mysteries.

Lottie still hasn’t told Noah her secret. On the other hand we do spend a lot of time with Everette, Noah’s step-brother. He has a way of getting people to tell them his secrets and he has figured out Lottie’s. I liked spending time with Everette, but I was unsure if they were going to have a thing or if it was a friend thing. It almost felt like we might get a love-triangle and I’m glad we don’t. I don’t like triangles.

We also see more of her mom who now has a boyfriend after years of just dating and not being serious about a relationship. And, of course she’s concerned that the new guy isn’t what he seems.

All and all Bobbing for Bodies was an ok cozy mystery.

Lottie Lemon sees the ghosts of pets of people who are about to have something horrible happen to them. When she sees a cute furry squirrel ghost at the grand opening of her new bakery, she follows the creature right to the dead body of Hunter, a life-long friend that has been shot in the alley. Despite all the work that the new bakery entails, she still finds time to investigate Hunter's murder with her sort-of boyfriend, Noah, and his stepbrother, Judge Baxter, aka Mr. Sexy.

I picked this one up because I needed a book with a pumpkin on the cover for a challenge. What I got was a cute little cozy mystery. It always amazes me that these ladies with grueling day jobs have extra time to investigate murders and that a small town like Honey Hollow seems to have so many. Whatever, this was an entertaining fun read with just enough details and character development to be fun but not heavy. Just what I needed leading up to Halloween.

This is a very easy read. I thought the squirrel was adorable, though I wasn't surprised whose it was, and wish the ghostly pets played a bigger part - maybe in future books? Lottie definitely did more actual sleuthing in this one, which brought about some very funny moments. The ending was a little too easy, why would the culprit just admit everything? I'm hoping to read more in this series soon.

Lottie Lemon has just opened up her own bakery. But at the grand opening something really bad is going to happen. Why does she know this - because she sees spirit animals. When she sees a ghostly squirrel run through her new shop - she wonders whose pet it was. The ghostly animals have always been owned by the person that will be hurt.

I gave this a 3.5 because I had trouble following along having read book 4 before book 2. This is not the author's fault. I do take exception to the laugh out loud billing it gets. I didn't think it was that funny. Mystery good...characters good...out of order not too good. Read these in order for maximum enjoyment.

This is so sad in that Lottie loses a friend. She decides she needs to locate the killer even though everyone is telling her her place is in the bakery. Lottie has become closer to Noah, but I think she has feelings for Everett. I love the characters, but wish there was more interaction with the furry ghosts!

I borrowed this book from Kindle Unlimited.

*** I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review. ***

I am not one for mystery books but I was pleasantly surprised when I fell in love with the characters and book itself.

Omg Addison Moore has done it once again. Her snarky funny remaks will make you literally laugh out loud! I was laughing so hard, I was crying! If you have not read a book from Addison Moore yet, this is a good book to start with so go grab your copy now!

I like the murder mystery and the aesthetic but I totally forgot about the annoying, manufactured relationship drama in this series. Lottie jumping to conclusions, being hypocritical and hating any woman who looks at Noah or Everett (who she's not dating). It's just a bit much. I hope it doesn't eclipse my enjoyment because other than that the series is cute and funny.

Not as fun as the first one. But still good. This book definitely had second book syndrome. Must create tension with protagonist and love interest. I know I'll give them both super vague dialogue towards each other. Instead of letting them actually say what they want from each other.

Very heavy on the romance, light on the mystery (which is resolved with some new facts thrown in near the end). Not enough of the cute squirrel or the cat, or Halloween, or humor to make up for the lack of mystery. Not even a recipe thrown in at the end. Romance was cringey and all over the place.

The ghost squirrel

Another great read that follows the life of a young woman who sees ghost. More specifically the ghost of pets that the people who suffer either death or a severe injury used to have. Will she actually end up with someone other than Noah? Okay the actual mystery wasn't all that but the rest of the storyline more than made up for it.
Her bakery has been a rush job but the opening seems to be going well (apart from an earlier incident that nearly ended with her being flattened by some scaffolding) until she sees the squirrel. Now she is a bit paranoid as this was witnessed by another. She is surprised to find the body in the alley but she is surprised at who it is. She tries to investigate but her efforts keep being thwarted by the detective and Noah. Can she still find out who did the deed and why? Will the person she had to tell her secret too, keep it? What will moving mean and how will Noah take to her new neighbour?

Lottie is at it again. When she is nearly killed by a scaffolding falling, things start to go crazy. At her opening night of the bakery all her friends and family are present. She see’s Bear and Hunter having a fight. She goes back in and sees a dead squirrel going through the crowd and this time catches the attention of Everette. When she goes out there lies Hunter dead.

With Noah and Everette being protective can she find out why Hunter was murdered and why he was asking for money?

Can the new detective not get in her way or into Noah?

Another great read in the series. Some laugh out loud moments and you wonder how Lottie gets herself into some situations. It is nice to see all the characters back and learning a bit more about them.

Before I really started to dig into this series, I was already a little in love with Lottie and the zany characters that surround her from what I’d seen from their cameo appearances in other series. This book kept me guessing from the moment it opened. I didn’t know who was behind the murder and I most assuredly didn’t have a clue why they did it. Those are the kinds of mysteries I love the most: the ones that keep me guessing, and keep me entertained and laughing with the hijinks and calamities going on in the background. Knowing a little about what’s in their future, I can’t wait to see how they get there.

A good Halloween read!

Book 1 was amazing, exciting, more-ish. So my expectations were sky-high and maybe that wasn’t fair. Because this second was good! But… not AS good as book 1. That went straight to my favorites list, but this one had way too much recap at the start. And that resulted in the characters hardly developing, and also in the feeling that it was all a bit samey at the start. I guess I prefer it when all the individual books in a series can’t be read as standalones. A quick recap, okay, but this was too lengthy for me. And, frankly, Lottie irritated me a few times. But having said all that, it was an enjoyable book! And it ends well. I liked it!

3,5 if I could. This had me all feeling cozy again, I am really warming up to the charakters. It is very predictable, all the books are quite the same but that is the charm for me. Will be picking up the third very soon again

Okay, so I've made it to book #14 in this series, and I feel like I need to post a review for all the books I've read up to this point. These books rea all set pretty close together, so it's almost like you're reading one big, long story or watching a TV drama or soap opera. There are some really fun, interesting things in these books, and some other things that are problematic.

Things that I like:

The setting - Honey Hollow is one of those adorable little towns that exist almost exclusively in rom-com books or cozy TV shows. Think Stars Hollow, but in Vermont. It's the kind of town that has absolutely no major corporations in the downtown area. No McDonald's, no Walmart's, nothing. Everything is family owned. Every business decorates for whatever event/holiday/season is coming up or going on and everyone in town is always at every event. I'm here for that. If I could find this kind of town in RL, I would be in heaven. I'm sure that some place, somewhere, is like this, and I haven't found it yet, so that's why I'm saying it's almost exclusively in books or shows. But I do really love this little town.

Most of the side characters - I love Keelie and Meg the most of the side characters, but Lainey, Brittany, and even Cormack are fun and have enough quirks to keep them interesting. I'm not saying they are perfect, but they are a lot of fun and I want a friend group just like them.

The premise - I'm not going to do spoilers for any of the books, but this isn't really a spoiler, since it is literally the first paragraph in every book. Lottie's power is really cool and something different from the normal cozy mystery realm. She sees ghosts of pets and people who are there to help her solve a murder of someone they are close to. Love this idea. It's really what sets this series apart from the other cozy mystery type stories. The fact that her powers do grow and shift, and her reaction to them, is something that seems like normal reactions.

Everett - I really like Everett. He's understanding, has his own demons, is a calming force on Lottie, and really cares about her. He tells her things that he's hidden from others in the past, which just shows how much he cares for her. And he's willing to give her time to figure things out on her own. He also supports her in everything, but mostly in her investigations. He knows she's going to do whatever it is she's going to do, so he tags along to make sure she's as safe as she can be in the situation. He doesn't try to fit her in a box of his own expectations, but lets her be her own person, which is very refreshing.

Things I'm on the fence about:

Lottie - Yes, the FMC herself. First of all, I do like Lottie. She has a lot of good points, and she genuinely cares about people and is fiercely loyal to her friends and family. She is stubborn and keeps going, no matter what obstacles are in her way. I like that part of her. However, the other part of her is a complete mess. The woman cannot make up her mind about her love life and frankly, it's pretty darn annoying. I get that it's easy to be attracted to two different men at once, but if she actually sat down and looked at how each of them treats her, she would be able to make her choice. That part of her makes her seem kind of airheaded and jealous all the time. I really don't like that treatment of her, even though those are normal emotions and behaviors, and she is relatable. But given how focused she is in her business and the other parts of her life, it's almost like the author is afraid to make a choice for Lottie and make someone mad. Which just leaves everything in a long, drawn-out romantic triangle that no one really asked for.

Things I really don't like -

Both of Lottie's mothers - Look, the backstory of Lottie's birth mom having been a teenage who got pregnant and left her to be adopted by her "parents" is good. Love the back story and the support Lottie gets from her adoptive family is great. But both of her moms act like they are mean girls in high school and the only thing they have to do is fight each other over who has which guy as a boyfriend now. After hearing about how much Miranda loved her deceased husband and spent 10 years not dating, to have her having a revolving door of dates now seems a bit of an overkill. I do think that people can and should have meaningful relationships after their SO's pass on, but her relationships seem so superficial and juvenile. Carlotta, on the other hand, has every reason to distrust men (that we know of. We don't get a whole lot of background on where she was and what happened for the 29 years she was gone), but she just jumps back into competing with Miranda for every man in her life. It's very 1980's soap opera-ish. And really, it's somewhat distracting to the main stories.

The constant repetition - There are certain words/phrases/paragraphs that seem as if they are just lifted from one book and dropped right into the next. Do we really need the first paragraph (which is also the blurb for every single book) about Lottie and her ability to see the dead? Couldn't the author think of a different way to work it in somewhere in the first chapter or so? Why don't we get any background as to why Lottie's powers are suddenly escalating? But nope, just the same "I'm Lottie Lemon and I see dead pets." every single story. Also, why does everyone refer to Lottie almost exclusively as Lottie Lemon? It's not like Lainey comes in and someone always says, "Lainey Lemon!" I'm sure there are multiple ways to keep putting her last name in there, if that's what the author is really wanting to do. And the shoulder shimmy and hip bump. It's like those phrases are used 40-50 times per book. The books are not that long at all. There is no reason for someone's shoulders to do a shimmy every other chapter or so.

Noah - I know this will probably cause some hurt feelings, but Noah is not a likeable character. He is controlling and stalkerish. His and Lottie's meet cute was cute. I enjoyed that. But then, Noah got problematic. I enjoyed the beginning of his relationship with Lottie. He was her pick, and Everett was there in the background, but I was fine with Noah. UNTIL Brittany showed up. Do you mean to tell me in SIX MONTHS Noah couldn't find one second to have a serious conversation with the woman he said he was falling in love with to tell her that his divorce was not finalized yet? Oh, his bad. He "forgot" to tell her. Just like he "forgot" to tell her that he put a tracker on her car. Is that even legal? Oh, and cameras pointing at her front door? Really? Hello, stalker. And when Lottie, who did not want to be the other woman, tells him that yes, she has feelings for him, but she is done with him because of his wife, he refuses to accept that. Instead of figuring out his relationship with Brittany (and Cormack -but that's next), he continuously busts in on Lottie and Everett. That really bothered me. Lottie set boundaries and eventually, when things had settled down, she and Noah could have been really good friends, but he refuses to accept the boundaries. He constantly interrupts Lottie and Everett, breaking in whenever they are alone and making snide comments about Everett. You know who doesn't do that later? Everett. When he tells Lottie to figure out who she wants to be with, he even says no to getting physical with Lottie so she can decide for herself between Noah and Everett. But Noah? Nope, Lottie is his toy and he can't stand other people touching his toys. And then, he "accidentally" gets engaged to Cormack and "can't find a way" to tell her that they are actually not engaged. He takes her on dates. Takes her to dinner. Takes her to relationship counseling. Let's Cormack throw them an engagement party. And through all of this, he keeps telling Lottie that "he just can't figure out how to get Cormack to understand." Idk, dude. Maybe stop taking her on dates? Slap her with a restraining order? You're a detective. Figure it out. OH, and that brings me the worst part of Noah (if you can believe that). He doesn't want a relationship with Lottie. He wants to own her and to put her in a box or on a shelf. The whole first part of their relationship is him telling Lottie to stay out of everything and be a good girl and get back in the kitchen. Look, I get she's a baker and he's trying to keep her safe. But there is ALWAYS a point in the books that he realizes she's far ahead of him in the investigation and all of a sudden, it's fine for her to be involved. As long as she follows his rules and does exactly what he says.

So, I read through the first 13 pretty quickly and have started 14. But I think I'm going to take a break, because the things I am annoyed with are slowly starting to outweigh the things that I like about this book series. Hopefully, when I go back and pick it up again, I'll be able to enjoy the stories once again.

I read this as part of the Cozy Halloween Boxed Set.

So many names when one pops up later in the book, I have to go back to see who they are. Probably 90% of them don’t show up again so why name them? And why is everyone so drop-dead gorgeous? Not even a slightly overweight normal looking person in the crowd. All the women are model like as well. Nothing but beautiful people in that town. Talk about shallow. And the way Lottie literally ‘melts’ around Noah. Wow! So overboard on the attraction thing. She calls him (to herself) shining moon god, this god, etc.

Slight spoiler alert!!! What festival in their right mind would let a part of the entertainment weld a real chainsaw (and running it even)! If anyone even got slightly hurt, they could sue the owners for everything they had.

Despite my criticisms, it is a fun light read.

OMG!!! I can not get enough of this series. I love the seeing pets aspect and the characters are just too much... too much fun, that is. The story is fun, original, unpredictable and kept me glued to the pages from start to finish. The characters are intriguing and mostly realistic. I'm really happy with how things worked out with Lottie and Noah, although I did find myself rooting for Everett a bit in the romance department. I think Everett and Lottie would've also made a cute couple but I'm still hoping he'll find his match. I'm also really hoping that Lainey will see the truth about Tanner and go back to her ex. All in all, this is a fantastic read and I can't wait to read the next story in the series.

What do a shady scaffolding accident, a ghostly squirrel, and a seedy strip club have in common? One very dead friend with one helluva secret!!

With the tragic murder of an old dear friend weighing on her mind, Lottie Lemon can’t hold back from investigating! Completely unaware of the water she’s treading, could Lottie find herself in danger yet again? Will Noah and Everett come to save the day?

Addison kills it yet again!! I can’t help but fall in love with Honey Hollow, Vermont and all of its residents!! I cannot wait for Pumpkin Spice Sacrifice!!!
