Catherine and Harry are two high-powered young professionals living in Washington, D.C., and engaged to be married in a few short months. Harry works as a special adviser to the president and Catherine as a publicist for the vice president. Once happy and more-or-less carefree, Harry and Catherine now have such little time for each other that Catherine begins to worry about the future of their relationship, and she wonders what happened to the Harry she met and fell in love with in New York. But when Harry goes missing, she is left to question how much she really knows about him and what he knows of her.
Summoning deeper themes of lost innocence, human relationships, and ultimately how well we know and understand those closest to us, this elegant debut also stirs up the grit of political Washington and reads as a love letter for the romance of New York.
This is such a gripping, interesting read. It has heart and intrigue and I read it all in one sitting. No one has ever heard of it, and I don't even know what compelled me to pick it up at Barnes & Noble. But I recommend it to everyone I know!
Oh Harry how could you? I feel bad for those left behind. Such sadness but I wish there was a part two to reunite this couple the way they should be. Do things like this really happen?
I loved how Melissa McConnell narrated; it was very descriptive and had the feel of a personal journal. I found the plot interesting, but I thought some parts were very drawn out. Overall, I enjoyed it and would read another novel by the author if she wrote one.
You have to read 2/3 of the book before it gets interesting. The flashbacks are not material to the story. I found the book to be slow, boring, and full of immaterial details.
“I have found evidence of Harry.” What I enjoyed about this book is how well the title was incorporated into the overall meaning. The novel was about a couple too absorbed with their own lives to pay attention to the little things in life that matter. One day an accident occurs and one dies. Throughout the story the reader gets to see both sides of the story..what Catherine and Harry were thinking at the same time. It was interesting to see how what they thought about each other was wrong - a resemblance of today (how people assume other people are thinking a certain way that is indeed wrong).
First, after reading a few of the reviews, I saw 2 people whose reviews should have been marked as spoilers. And one of the spoilers was wrong - if you read this book you would know what I mean. Why would someone want to ruin this book for other readers? I started out struggling to pick this book up again as I found it boring in the beginning. But as I continued to read I couldn't put it down after I got through the first half. Although I didn't care for the flashbacks to her childhood, I could relate to her feelings of loss and the crumbling of her relationship. So glad I didn't give it up on it!
This is about a couple who moves from new york to washington d.c. to begin their new life. They are about to get married, however catherine is met with problems. Her fiance has been so busy that she starts to question their love and whether there is understanding at all. I think there are always time when you're separated from the ones you love and when theyre gone, you start to ask questions about everything. Time is the true test for love and as long as two people can past that, then they'll know.
I just picked this book off of the library shelf because I needed a travel paperback, and was shocked at how beautifully written it was. The author does a lovely job with the main character, a speechwriter for the vice president, and with addressing the issues of love, loss and sacrifice. My only criticism is that she forces her wonderful characters into a mystery plot twist I didn't really believe; but even so, it worked for me because I still believed so wholeheartedly in the people she created.
This is a gorgeous read! My husband went to college with the author, the book has been sitting on our shelves forever. Typical right, support an author you know by BUYING the book, but somehow never getting around to READING it! well, we have about 4 of those on our shelves and I decided it was high time to plow through them.
This book is so beautifully written, I love her word choices, descriptions. I'm not a big fan of a lot of "prose", but she gets it just right. I didn't love all the parts of the actual story line, but I really enjoyed the book on the whole. Worth reading!
I really enjoyed this book. It is an easy read and on the surface may be just another love story, but with the writing so smooth and with the just right amount of descriptive prose, I felt drawn in. Catherine and her fiance Harry both work for the US government in Washington, DC, and one day tragedy strikes. Catherine is left with lots of questions and very few answers. Throughout the narrative you feel that their love for each other will never diminish, but will it? A good holiday read.
I was having a hard time deciding between 3 and 4 stars because it took me a while to feel like there was more depth to the main characters and the overall story than the usual boy leaves girl premise. Once I really got into the book, though, I found it to be a compelling read. It was definitely a page turner. It's not a happy story, but it's engaging.
In spite of the hokey title, this was quite a serious book. The book tells the story of an engaged couple who work in Washington DC. He works for the president and she works for the vice president. One day he disappears without explanation, and she spends the rest of the book trying to figure out why.
I found this to be a very interesting, well written book.
I was disappointed- found this book boring. About a relationship that falls apart among a relatively high-powered DC couple. The relationship stuff didn't hold my interest and neither did all of the talk about working on the Hill.
Oh wow, I loved this book. I was so into the characters. None of them rang false for me. I know that happy endings can sometimes feel sappy, but in this case, the resolution was just so pure for me, and the little twist at the end was just the icing on the cake. Loved it!
Didn't care for her writing style, ending was predictable, intriguing possibilites in story lines were not followed through, but I did finish it, thus 2 stars instead of 1.
