I HATE FAIRYLAND and Deadpool writer SKOTTIE YOUNG and artist AARON CONLEY (Sabertooth Swordsman, Rocket Raccoon & Groot) team up for a hilarious all-new, all-ages ONGOING SERIES! Rufus, the biggest bully in Rottenville since kindergarten, suddenly goes from bully to bullied on the first day of high school. He’s forced to make a shaky pact with his favorite Spencer and his twin sibling besties, Edith and Ernie. Together they’ll have to find a way to survive the Hunger Games-like contest known simply as the BULLY WARS—where the winner will rule the school!
Skottie Young has been an illustrator and cartoonist for over ten years working for entertainment and publishing companies such Marvel, Warner Bros., Image, Upper Deck, Mattel, and many more.
He is currently illustrating the New York Times Best Selling and Eisner Award Nominated adaptions of L. Frank Baum's OZ novels with writer Eric Shanower. The series has gained acclaim from both fans and critics.
Skottie currently lives in Illinois with his family, Casey, Baxter and their Saint Bernard, Emma.
This will have to build up. In this state I am afraid I will drop it. I was bullied. Then I was bullied some more, even when I got older, almost in my thirties. No, there is nothing lacking in me. yes, I've read all the books, I know what to do. Some people are just rotten inside, so when we see a bully as a sympathetic character, no just no. If it was revenge of the nerd story, I would have liked even if it took shape of wish fulfilment torture porn, but this... No. No. Change it fast!!!
Lots of people do deadpan humor well, and I like it. Some graphic novels are sort of manic and in your face, and that can work or not. But Skottie Young is one of the only writers I know of who consistently produces funny and entertaining graphic novels and comics that manage to combine the two styles, seemingly without effort. His "I Hate Fairyland" set the pattern, but this new series works even better.
The premise is that nerdy Spencer and his semi-nerdy pals Edith and Ernie are not looking forward to moving on to high school in the company of Rufus, the monster bully who has tormented them since "before they could remember". But wait, it turns out that at high school Rufus is so small time that he gets bullied by the really big boss bullies. So, the four kids team up, with Spencer, Edith and Ernie agreeing to help Rufus win the "Bully Wars" in exchange for Rufus thereafter giving them a pass on any future bullying. This is not a message story, as such. It is, rather, an antic trip into the heart of darkest bullying, with a weird buddy-comedy center.
In this first issue we set up the premise and end up with the gang scheming about making Rufus the head, champion bully. The second issue will involve training up Rufus for the Bully Wars. Throughout all of this we get sly and deadpan humor from all of the characters, because Young makes both Spencer and Rufus interesting characters who can spin off subtle or edgy or unexpectedly insightful observations. We cover school, bullying, nerdiness, friendship, teamwork, more school, teachers, gym teachers, and a whole host of other school daze topics. It doesn't get cute or cloying, though, because of the art and the fact that almost all of the dialogue is screamed by one character or another. The art is jagged and angular and exaggerated. Panel design and layout is all over the place, with many panels bleeding into other panels. It feels jazzy and wired until you get used to it, but the energy is through the ceiling. As a bonus, there are always a few little jokes drawn into the panels just to keep your eyeballs roving around.
The upshot is that this looks like a manic mess, but it's controlled chaos that has a point. It's fresh and fun and a very nice find.
(Please note that I had a chance to read a free ecopy of this book without a review requirement, or any influence regarding review content should I choose to post a review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.)
I really liked this issue. Which is kind of funny because, I don't want to like it. But there is something about seeing the bully be bullied. And the bit of promise at the end, where , also gives me hope that this will turn into something more than a guilty pleasure. I'm not usually up for a high school setting, but I think this one has convinced me to buy the second issue, when it comes out
Love where this one is headed! Bullies beating up bullies! It’s seems like a war zone on the first day of high school, if your a by stander it’s best to just stay out of their way. But wait... what if we made the weakest bully of the bullies the king of the bullies so all of us could avoid being bullied again? Could we all just get along if we let bullies take each other out? Find out!! Read this one
An all ages book, that still appeals to adults and has a genuinely funny and keen sense of humour? How?
I'm amazed at just how many books that purport to be aimed at younger kids have nothing of any substance to claim as their own.
The storytelling is fun and breakneck at all times. The pencils are absolutely top level and every panel breathes in and out with detail and life and visual gags.
I will pick this up and feel like a kid again and revel in the fun.
This wasn't for me if I'm just judging it by this single issue. I really didn't find anything to grab onto. I have read I Hate Fairyland by Young and I kind of got the same sense of humor, but it felt directionless. I definitely didn't feel anything for these characters like I did for Gertrude, and I still don't know what a bully war is so I'll pass.
Skvely guilty pleasure o bande nerdu a jednom sikanatorovi ktereho zacnou na nove skole sikanovat. Je to debilni, vtipny a over the top :D Miluji tu misty az nechutnou kresbu i ten humor co strida styly :D
This is an intriguing first issue, the story hasn't grabbed me but the art style is really nice and leans more towards the disgusting tendencies of I Hate Fairyland (another brilliant Skottie young comic).
I love Skottie Young's work. Maybe as an illustrator more. Well, good artwork, but a bit disappointed by the story. A bullied kid allies with a bully? Kinda surreal.

Interesting premise, I do wonder how they’ll handle having the bully be the “good guy.” The art is amazing (and intentionally off-putting and disgusting-think Ren & Stimpy). Excited to read the next issue!
