I Fear No Evil #6

Tomb Raider Emeritus

Rate this book

Shay Carson has a secret. Not all aliens are Oricerans. Turns out there’s been more than one kind of portal to Earth. But having just enough information to know you’re in trouble is the best way to get yourself killed.

That’s alright, Shay can take care of business, order pizza and keep her head on a swivel, looking for trouble. She’s a tomb raider and a professor with a dark past and a new family to protect. James Brownstone wanted to keep it simple… He never saw Shay Carson coming.

She brings her own brand of trouble to the table.

Okay, I'm a late bloomer who's a big DC comics fan and spent my childhood summers on the Jersey shore but I was born under a wandering star and have lived in different parts of America ever since. That's enough about me. Need to feel inspired today? Looking for something to make you root for an ordinary hero? I'm all about that in everything I write.

I love a good tale that makes me wonder about things and I love a story even more that leaves me feeling inspired or like I'm capable of doing more than I realized. That's my goal with everything I've ever written. Some of the stories I tell involve twisting, turning thrillers and others have a lot of magic.

There's something to be said for getting lost in another world and coming out the other side feeling a little better about yourself or the possibilities in front of you. That's basically the best part of life in a nutshell, no matter what kind of story I'm setting out to tell.

Thank you for checking out my stories!

What a wonderful ending to this particular part of Shay's life!

According to the Authors' Notes (yes, I DO read them in every book), this was the end of Shay's adventures, in her own series - with the promise of there, maybe, being other books dedicated to her, some time in the future (I'm reading these at least a couple of years after they were published, so I guess I'll find that out, as I continue to read each book in the Oriceran Universe)!

Whatever happens, I really hope that she'll be included in James Brownstone, and Alison's books, as she's become a very important part of their lives.

Just like the title of this book, Shay has retired from the first part of the life she used to lead. Her job, as a killer, kept her going when it was needed but, now, she's busy building even more ways to use her love of learning, to help in her Tomb Raiding.

But her 'job' as a part-time Lecturer at her local University is where we see that love blossom, as she takes all that she knows, and brings it alive, by weaving it into facts and surmises, for the next generation to question.

The previous seventeen books to this one, have had James, Alison, and Shay, being slowly, but surely, changed by knowing each other. Their lives are now thoroughly entwined, and they've brought in others, too, to create a family that none of them thought they'd have.

This has been a wonderful journey to follow, so I'm hoping that Shay stays as a part of this focus point, this triangle of people, who are determined to protect each other.

I just looked at my reading list, and it seems I'm going back to James' series, TUMB, to book number ten: 'One Bad Decision'.

This sounds ominous, so I'm going to finish writing this review, then go straight on to his next adventure.

Once I've finished reading it, I'll catch you on the flip side, to let you know what I think about it all!

3 A True Revival Of Sartorial Crimes Long Since Forgotten Stars

Tomb Raider Emeritus is the sixth book in the I Fear No Evil series by Martha Carr and Michael Anderle.

All of the self discovery saved this series. I love that Martha Carr delved deeper into the Shay Carson character, simply because leaving us with only what we glimpse in The Unbelievable Mr. Brownstone would have been a disservice. She has marvelously transitioned from the very two dimensional character the first books in Brownstone's series showcase her as, into this fully formed pivotal character. Experiencing her dramatic shift to the caring, happy, badass that she is today was an enjoying journey.

Alas, that's not all this series is about. The mystery of the Ragnarok and Nephilem government projects, and the alien race they are studying, and James is protentially connected to has fallen short. Maybe there will be more in the Brownstone series from this point on, now that she has finally clued him in to the stakes his origin truly represents. However, it's still much of a letdown that nothing has come of the information within this series given all of the build up and anticipation Carr has utilized during Shay's story.

Additionally, the final smackdown for Yulia was a little lacking given, again, all of the hype around her mysterious nature and consistent interference. Then there's the very limited information, and the teaser to more immediate concerns related to why just now more people are interested in the alien stones that she's found too many times before.

The end of something great, and tied into something more perfectly. Tomb Raider Emeritus has all the makings of a great closer to a series that leaves you wanting another book or a follow-up series. However, this is going in tandem with The Unbelievable Mr. Brownstone Series so the characters will continue.

The pacing was much better than average for the author(s). Normally the pace is too fast and the narrative doesn’t always line up with itself. This time it was done correctly and the book really shines because of it.

Really, the final bits of the book are a treat to read. I will not give spoilers, but certain conversations happen and characters meet that you’ve been waiting for throughout the whole of the series. There are a few loose ends, but I believe they will be seen to later in another series.

Overall, a wonder read and an excellent “ending” for this story. It would be truly worth your time to read this whole series. I must admit I am impressed by how well the ending was done.

Interweaving of families

Awww, what a perfectly beautiful way to finish the Shay Carson series. Shay has kept Lily a secret from James and Allison and eventually introduce them all to each other and leaves Shay feeling like she has introduced one side of her family to the other. And that is what they all are; family.
Shay’s kick arse skills are really tested in this book and she finds herself in some precarious situations that almost take her life. But, in true Shay style, she prevails and wins the day, mostly.
I can’t say I will miss the cross overs with Shay, Brownstone and Allison, although it did make for interesting reading going from one to another to keep within the cross overs. This has been very well done by Carr and Anderle who have proven themselves to be included in my top 10 authors. Considering I read over 50 books a month from a diverse range of authors, that tells you how amazing they are.

Shay is a real girl........

A soft and squeezable shay- not quite but one that is living her life and day after day finding she has more and more to live for maybe she wants to be a mom with 2 daughters and have weird and quirky friends from the experimenting king of pizza to parkour pals and dancing divas with super smelly smoke machines not to mention her guy James with more pod cast antics if a bounty hunter can have antics ..... can’t wait to find out more about the rest of shays world and james’ as well as Allison’s she’s stuck at book five( where I am now ) and flying a dragon just saying.....

This was kind of sad as this is the last book in this series and I was kind of getting into the blend. However, having 3 series all working in parallel was annoying and this book takes place before the book I'd just finished on Brownstone which gave me some continuity aggravation. Not huge thus still 5 stars and very enjoyable. Once again a lot of important connectors and some foundation elements for later Brownstone books. Preference would have been to have all of these books come out in sequence rather than in parallel as it would have made for a more fluid read. But I enjoyed this non the less and now am in Brownstone withdrawals...

Great Series

A great Serious with a great cast of characters. A magical tumor raider in the near future when magic has returned to earth. One of many series in this magical universe we’re characters crossover into each other series and appear frequently together. Our tumor raider is a former top assassin living in LA and becomes involved with James brown stone bounty hunter and helps keep the world safe wall tracking down dangerous magical artifacts and helping James brownstone on occasion. This is the final book in the series but the character will continue on in the genes brownstone as well as other series. Very well written and very entertaining Series check it out

Amazing book!!

Another amazing story! I love shays character!! Hard core killer (some what rehabilitating) turned archeologists! I very much dig her! Lol. Ok spoiler alert!!

I hate that her series has needed!.. for now.. next to TUBMB this is my favorite. series but I get it. To much going on and it's hard to merge both series with out contradiction (which I have noticed... Alison hair is now full white..) but between my next TUBMB this series keep me going. :( still this books is a must read. Ties everything up great!

Enjoyed this series

Looks like that's all from this series, moving forward she is going to be a part of James's series. I enjoyed the additional insight into Shay and what made her her. I love that they took care of the ice witch in this book. And I love how things move forward with Lilly and Allison. I have not read the Brownstone series, but it looks like I'll start those now. This was told from multiple POV. But mostly Shay. Peytons situation is handled. Read series on order.

I love this wacky family!

She is back and on more tomb raids, including Lilly in the action. Gangs are trying to form from fragments of gangs that have been demolished, wonder how that will work put for them. The tunnel kids get some action and Lilly is working hard to give them all a better life. Allison is back for the summer so her favorite aunt is also busy putting her through her paces. Another good installment in our favorite tomb raider's life!

Squeeee!!!!

This is excellent! Shay is doing a lot of self-discovery, and I so badly want to share what happens, but don't want to spoil things.... It's so amazing! All of my favourite characters are here and so much happens. I've greatly enjoyed riding along with Shay and the others, and hope to see more of her in future stories.

Family

Shay is having thoughts of her future and the unexpected part her new family may play in it. I enjoy the action, humor, snarky dialogue, romance and family love. This is a great book to end the series on. However, I expect to see Shay in future books. I just downloaded the next Brownstone book, "One Bad Decision" and I am betting that we will find Shay in it .

It's good that this is the last one (at least for a while). They were beginning to feel a bit repetitious, and I was growing tired of trying to figure out where each one fit in with the Brownstone books. Her story is moving to the Brownstone books full time, and I'm glad.

I'm not saying it isn't good, and I did enjoy it. I'm just glad the authors are consolidating.

Shay strikes again...

Shay discovers that she is more that meets the eye. She has found that she enjoys archeology,, not just tomb raider. She now includes James, Alison, Lily and Peyton as her family. Good ending for an outstanding series.

Amazingly good as always. I'm sad to see the end of the Shay series but I hope she doesn't disappear entirely.

Shay, Brownstone, Alison, Lily, Peyton

Shay helps Lily, Alison and Peyton as they work to defeat enemies of Brownstone. Lily and Shay eventually find the ice witch and try to defeat her.

Characterization and plotting are excellent.

Sad this is the end

I'm sad that this is the end of Shay's series. I have loved going on her self discovery journey with her. I hope she appears frequently in James's and Alison's series. (I want to see them married almost as much as Alison wants it).

Mediocre

The weakest book in the series. It seems a shame to end a series with this book. No real success or real outcome in the characters lives.
