Once a time traveller... Joseph Bridgeman is back and dreaming of a quiet life. All he wants is to re-kindle his relationship with Alexia Finch, get to know his estranged family and catch up on the last twenty years.
Sounds simple enough.
But when a mysterious time-traveller arrives in his shop, Joe learns his first trip was only the beginning, and this time the stabilisers are coming off.
Flung back to London in the swinging sixties, Joe must save an innocent woman and her son from the clutches of a ruthless gangster. But how will he succeed when the rules of time travel have changed, his present is a confusing mess and the past is a world without internet, decent coffee or sat-nav?
Time doesn’t heal, after all. It just adds salt.
Joseph Bridgeman and the Silver Hunter is Book 2 in The Downstream Diaries; an emotionally intelligent time travel series featuring action, mystery, thrills, sadness, comedy and mind-bending twists.
Find out why readers are saying… "I started reading it last night and have just finished. I need more of Joseph Bridgman. I love these books!" "Done! Goodness... That was difficult to put down. A real page-turner, absolutely brilliant" "I enjoyed this one more than the first one (and that's saying something)." "This is the best Time Travel book I've ever read. In fact, this has got to rank up there in my top ten and, that includes books by Steven King, Tom Clancy, and Dean Koontz."
Note: Advice for time-travellers If you dive straight into Book 2, be sure to pop back in time and read Book 1, ‘The Unexpected Gift of Joseph Bridgeman.’ first. It’s just better that way.
I enjoyed this second book in the Downstream series, but not as much as the first. Some of the elements that I loved about the first one were missing from this one. I didn't like that time traveling was no longer his to control. Because Joseph's "mission" was thrust upon him, I didn't feel this second volume had the same heart and investment as its predecessor. A fun read, but it lost the qualities that set it apart from other time travel stories.
I started reading this yesterday morning and I finished this morning.
I couldn't put it down. It was fast paced and funny. The narrator is still sarcastic and a little caustic but he's been thrown into a new life, one he doesn't recognize so I think the author did a great job capturing the character's turmoil but in his distinctive voice.
This story was more external plot driven whereas the first was driven by the character's need to save his sister. The first book I really felt for Joseph and what he was trying to do. In this book, there was less emotionality. He's travelling in time for a less personal reason but I still really felt and identified with him.
I hope there's a third book at some point because I can't wait to read it!
Another solidly written adventure with humour and emotion and creativity. The main character is just so likable. And all the people that matter to him are, too. I have to agree that I preferred the first one in the series (the scenes where he's in his alternative self's life were less enjoyable here), but I can see how this is all going to lead up to an excellent book 3 now the overall plot has thickened.
I really enjoyed the first book in the series and it was natural I desired to continue into the second book. One thing I really enjoyed about the first book was the set-up and rules created for time travel. They were different and made the story even more interesting than your classic time travel story. I'm glad that at the end of the first book we were already introduced to the rules changing for the second, otherwise I may have been upset by the drastic difference. The rules have become more common with standard time travel, which is fine, but I think it just makes the first book outshine the second. The series is set to continue and I do plan on reading it, as I very much enjoyed this book for its own.
While the time travel was more standard, and the story a bit more straightforward, that was fine to see the world at large is growing and there are much more opportunities for characters to become more layered and struck with interesting dilemmas to solve. I particularly liked the avenue taken into what happens to a person when time travel occurs, as in.. Who am I now, due to the changes of my own timeline?. This is something Back to the Future did not do until recently in their comics for Marty. Joseph has to deal with this and I found it to be very real in the way he did deal with it. Not only the things that changed around him he does not know, but the things he did know that he cannot seem to get back to the way they were. I cannot imagine the difficulties, but I liked how it was shown as difficult and not just a one stop fix, very well done here. I very much dislike the "one episode fix" for things of this nature.
All in all, great scifi, great time travel, even if the rules went more standard, but I can understand the decision to do such a thing. Can't wait for the next one.
A very interesting and enjoyable read. BTW, no spoilers here. Book 2 picks up shortly after Book 1 ends. Joe is somewhat dazed and confused but most things seem good in the world. Most but not all...... New characters enter the narrative including one very odd one who with pushes the story forward, again with both good and bad results. As I wrote in my review of the first book, sometimes you do get what you want but there is a cost. It seems that "Time" can be a cruel master. The story however is not a downer. Joe doesn't realize it at first but he is being mentored by another, preparing him to fulfill his duty as a time traveler [Time Lord, to borrow a phrase from another time travelling character] One of the aspects of the book that found intriguing is the mystery embedded in his new time travels. A mystery he and he alone must solve to avoid dire consequences! Parts of the story are rather funny, somewhat snarky comments abound. Other parts seem to set the scene for additional and even more consequential adventures. All in all, and I don't say this about many books, I really can't wait for the next installment.
I just finished Joe Bridgman and the Silver Hunter and I'm kind of awestruck. This is the best Time Travel book I've ever read. In fact, this has got to rank up there in my top ten and, that includes books by Steven King, Tom Clancy, and Dean Koontz. When beginning to read this, I was worried about my ability to concentrate and focus on characters and plot details as I'm just five weeks out from Triple Bypass Open Heart Surgery. I had struggled terribly to read a fifty-page short story before reading The Silver Hunter and was unsure I'd do better with this story. While my recovery continues, I'm sure the quality of this story is most responsible for my vastly improved concentration and focus. I also found myself experiencing a wide variety of emotions (anxiety, anticipation, disappointment, hope, relief) as great books are expected to do.
Awesome read. Even better than the first book, which is a feat in itself. I've been on a bad streak lately and haven't really been enjoying my recent reads, but this one well and truly pulled me out of my slump. It's just what I needed.
The way that Nick Jones writes is both impressive and endearing. It's almost like when you're reading you can almost hear him talking to you in person, like it's a conversation that flows naturally, like he's telling the best story ever around a campfire. Nothing ever sounds forced and it is a joy to follow on Joe's story.
The book itself was great, too. Full of humour, twists, turns, drama and a really unique story. I started reading thinking "I love this, so much" and felt myself liking it even more as I read onward. So good. Can't say how much I enjoyed this!

The second Joseph Bridgeman-novel is again a fun read and as such fully recommended. No "but". It is different though. In the rather short time since the publication of "The Unexpected Gift" the writer has matured noticeably: The writing is more polished, the storyline more straightforward and less meandering without losing its appeal. With the current blueprint it would be possible to bang out one novel after the other in this series James Patterson-style. I'm hopeful the writer will avoid that pitfall because I'm optimistic he can improve even more in his next book. We may expect great things yet from Mr. Jones.
PS, or rather psst: The 'Silver Hunter' might be a tad too powerful ...
Ah.... the 60's! Time travel books usually have so many rules. It's been fun reading this one and the last book to find out that our hero Joe (spoilers, don't read this revelation) will no longer arrive in the nude. This book was great and moved along so quickly that one might say how quickly time flies. (ha ha) Anyway, I grew up in the 60's and except for the danger and the gangsters, life seemed wonderful. I hope the next book takes us to another great era. Thanks Mr Jones.
So, book one was good, entertaining and got me hooked. Book Two is chock full of adventure, more ramifications of time travel than I'd ever considered and plot twists that make a good story into a fantastic tale. I think I'm midway between Vinny and Joseph which means while get Joseph's caution and fear I also love how Vinny embraces the unusual and turns it into a party. If you like deadpan humor, a hapless hero with a burning mission, and a bit of time travel you've found the book for you. Enjoy!
"It isn't the easy stuff that shapes who we are. It's the hard stuff, the things that smash us into a million pieces, forcing us to dig deep in order to put ourselves back together." What an incredible ride. Nick Jones has outdone himself in this follow up to the first Joseph Bridgeman book. The writing is brilliant, the stakes are higher, and the storyline is darker. It is a quick-witted and exciting adventure.
I'm still giving The Silver Hunter 4 stars, because of the consistency of other characters and originality of the ideas, especially Vinnie, who didn't change a bit between books 1 and 2, but I felt Downstream 2 didn't capture the essence of Joe or his plight in the same way. Joe seems to have lost something in book 2, his personality was missing. The pacing wasn't right and I just wasn't as engaged with Joe's story in this sequel.
Very good read although I did not find it was quite as good as the first one, but it did have the same side fun characters and witty dialogue. I thought the first one with search for his sister a better premise than assignment to save Lucy but now with Joe part of something bigger the entire purpose should come out in future books. Definitely recommended but like most series one has to start from the beginning. 4.4
Great storyline and writing. Bewildering at times because time itself is so mysterious. Not sure if the science behind the multiple universe paradox is sound but I'm going to go with it cause it's a roller coaster ride and who wants to stop that in the middle. I'll follow Mr. JONES and his entourage cause reading his work is time well spent. When is the next one coming out?
Awesome read. After reading the first book I was really looking forward to reading book 2. Fast paced and very clever. I adored the humour and the music references. (It even had me searching Spotify for bands and music that was referred to that I hadn’t listened to.) Well written and thought out. Thanks Nick for yet another great read.
I like that this isn't the standard canned story. It is truely unique ans causes the reader to think about time paradoxes in a way you might not have previously. The hero is definitely an average guy who is in over his head. His bumbling throughout adds humor to the story. I can easily recommend this book.
Like the book before it, it's a good idea but I just didn't warm to the characters .. I read it in the end because I wanted to know what happened .. and I was actually expecting a twist that I felt never really turned up.
Reasonable read and there's a fair chance that someone else reading this review would connect with Joe et al more than I did but a bit of a near miss for me.
Great book. Love the character of Joseph and was great to see him develop from a sad introvert trying to deal with his sister’s disappearance. I love Vinny, he is good for Joseph and in helping him grow and have more confidence in himself. Hoping for more interaction with Alexia in the future books. Heck...I’m really hoping there are more books in the future. Great time travel series!!!
After finishing the first part I was desperate to read what happens to Joseph! I wasnt disappointed - it just gets better. A wonderful clever plot, colourful characters, and with plenty of dry humor to accompany it all, it was very hard to put down, and now I want the next part.
This book feel a little short of the first, in my opinion. I enjoyed it, just didn't devour it like the first. Still well written, and well edited. I look forward to more books from Nick Jones.
I like this book but I prefer the first one, maybe because it was more sentimental, more intense. This one is funny thanks to Vinny's character but I miss some development in the relation with Alexia. Maybe I'm the 3th book? ;)

I like time travel stories. Good ones, that is. I'm picky and don't finish many. This one, and it's predecessor are great! Really looking forward to more in the series. Go Joe!
Sci go mystery and a comedy all in one. Likeable characters and scenes/times. I really enjoyed both books enough to take the time to do a one finger review.
Loved both the Bridgeman books. Engrossed from the start. Like good vinyl I got in the groove and the story flowed. Thank you for the wonderful adventure
