The Knights Club #1

Starting Over

Rate this book
Xavier Knight was starting his life over. A new city. A new club. The past was gone, and he had everything to look forward to… except… love. That ship had sailed, never to return. He was too old to play the games or stack up the one night stands. Until, an old enemy’s son walked into his club and his heart.

Sebastian Brady was through. Through with hiding who he was. Through letting his brother officers dictate his life. And completely through, with his family telling him who he was. He turned his back on his badge and his family’s heritage in the Atlanta police force. But, he never imagined that he’d be serving drinks in a gay bar and working for the hottest silver fox he had ever seen in his life.

Xavier and Seb have a lot to learn from each other. Hopefully, their growing love will survive Xavier’s past, Seb’s family, and a host of characters with secrets of their own, who all work at the Knights Club.

This is quite short but pretty full of detail and is a really nice May to December romance between an older guy who's looking to start over with his new club and a cop who's sick of the homophobia he encounters from his family and his fellow officers.

There's not much angst, it's medium steam but both Xavier and Seb were nicely drawn characters and their on page chemistry came across well. There's also a whole host of other fascinating secondary characters in and around the club which will make up the other novels in the series.

#ARC kindly received from the author in return for an honest and unbiased review.

As a start for a series I think this was a nice read. There is a lot we get to know.
We meet all the side character but only briefly.

Xavier takes over the gay club from his friend, it's a whole new beginning.
Seb resigned as a cop with no grievances at all, finally he can breathe freely... a whole new beginning.

When Seb starts his new job at Xavier’s club he couldn’t have guessed his homophobic and bigoted family issues would be give him a huge problem... but they do!

The concept is good, a gay bar, age gap, the promise of getting to know more about all the guys who work at the bar. I’m not sure how the sequels will be. I really hope there will be more about Xavier and Seb, so we get their whole picture. This was a short read and the writing is nice but for me, it shortens a bit of the development. It could've been more deepened and wider. I do hope a sequel will pick this up.
Overall it was a kind story with some sharp edges. It has a nice appearance.

I liked this novella. The author wrote a story with interesting character and situations. Sebastian and Xavier were both lovable. I felt sorry for Sebastian because of the way he was treated by his fellow cops. It felt very real to me. We’ve all heard that as time goes on, there is more tolerance among the police, but I still feel there is more of this sort of action than reported. Xavier was a little bit of a mystery, but soon, he’s opened like a book, and that book is a very good read. I love how he’s older than Sebastian, and along with the fact Sebastian is his employee, that stands in the way…but not for long. He made me smile a lot and the banter between him and Sebastian is witty, funny, and sweet. The two men have chemistry to spare, and they are incredibly sexy. In fact, there is quite a lot of sex in Starting Over. However, none of it is gratuitous and it just seems to fit their relationship. I mentioned an age difference, but honestly, I don’t feel it was too much of an issue. Sebastian mentioned Xavier as being a “silver fox,” but that just served to spur on my imagination.

Not a bad start. A gay cop breaking free from chains of family and Police as he quits and starts a new life. At Xavier's club. A new start for Xavier as he gives in to all that is Seb. Starting over and moving on.

Overview: Club owner, Xavier Knight, and former cop, Sebastian Brady, have a lot to learn from each other. And hopefully, their growing love will survive Xavier’s past, Seb’s family, as well as a host of intriguing characters with ties to the Knights Club.

C.J. Baty writes an intriguing story about two men falling in love and the impact their pasts are having on their current familial and professional relationships. With a definitive theme based on self-esteem, family, acceptance, adolescent issues, past romantic relationships, and the influential bonds—forged or broken—between fathers and sons, this tale is as psychologically compelling as it is provocative.

Baty’s plotline is tense, highly sexually-charged, and suspenseful. Protagonists, Xavier and Sebastian, are confronted with both uplifting and heartbreaking issues as they separately live complicated lives that intertwine through common relationships before they finally personally connect. There exists a genuine sense of romance between these two likable men that is quite natural and not at all forced.

It is, perhaps, unfortunate that aside from her two main characters, Baty bases the majority of her cast on some rather stereotypical, if not exaggerated, male characters—including extremely homophobic and abusive macho Southern cops, a “wife-beater-clad” hot Latino bartender, and a gaggle of professional boy-toys. There also exists a sense that the plotline of this story comes to an abrupt halt to hurry and pave the way for a subsequent chapter based on another key character in the Knights Club series.

On the plus side (And, it’s a big plus.) this male-on-male romance does shine a light on the unwarranted violence, discrimination, and romantic pitfalls that many gay men must still deal with in today’s society despite the supposed modernization of majority opinion and law. One feels for Sebastian in particular—for the horrible and nearly sadistic abuse his father doled out on a son who wanted nothing more than his love and acceptance, who never wanted to follow in his illustrious footsteps, and who did absolutely nothing wrong in preferring men over women.

“Starting Over” is a homosexual romance filled with suspense and plenty of drama. It is also a statement about our current culture’s need to be more accepting and inclusive of others who have the same right to fall in love as everyone else, who engage in mutual adult consensual relationships, and who have the right to be who they were born to be.

“Starting Over” contains adult themes, violence, and graphic sexual situations. I recommend this read for adults only—ages 18 and over.

CJ Baty's Starting Over is book one in her Knights Club Series. As with her Warfield Hotel series, it is a good, light-hearted mystery.

This story revolves around Xavier's new club, and his new hire, Sebastian. Both men have backgrounds in previous books, but you can easily get a feeling for them without having read the others.

Sebastian was formerly a cop, but got tired of all the homophobia within his work place. As he starts working for Xavier, who is still reeling from losing his lover two years ago, the chemistry is undeniable, and the sparks are flying!

They have to deal with the hesitancy of getting involved with an employee, some family issues, and a mystery that takes place in the bar. In the end, they help each other, as Xavier is able to start moving on from his loss, and Seb has never felt happier. Their relationship is tender, hot and super sweet.

CJ Baty does a great job developing and pacing her mysteries. Add in some nice and fun characters, like Xavier and Seb, and you're guaranteed to enjoy your time in this author created world. I know I can't wait to read the next book in this series. If it's anything like Starting Over, it will be wonderful.

I enjoyed this start to a series.

Starting Over is the first book I've read by C.J. Baty and I enjoyed it. The book introduces a lot of interesting characters but focuses on Xavier, the owner of The Knights Club, and his love interest, Seb.

Xavier purchased The Knights club recently and is slowly making changes so the club feels more like "his." He had hired some really interesting characters to work in his club.

Seb doesn't like his job as a cop; he was forced into the job by his father and brothers. They don't accept him as a gay man. After he goes to work for Xavier the attraction between them begins to grow until neither of them is able to resist any longer.

This is a fairly short novella at 86 pages but I like reading this length of story when I want to be able to finish one in a single day and don't have a lot of time to read. I think the author did a good job of creating interesting characters that I'd like to read more about. I'm looking forward to reading the remaining books in this series.

An advanced copy of this book was provided to me through Signal Boost PR but my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author.

Starting Over is book 1 in The Knight Club by CJ Baty and while you don't need to read her Warfield Hotel Mysteries series, a couple of the characters had cameos in this story.

I liked Seb and Xavier, especially Seb. I would've liked to see a bit more of their relationship, but I thought they were really good together and hope we'd get to see them again in the next books in the series. There were a few things that were a bit rushed or were left unanswered, but again, we still have 4 more books in the series.

I hated Seb's father and I was glad he was already dead, but his brother Zach doesn't seem to be much better. Malachi, his other brother, intrigued me and I hope one of the next books will focus on him.

Overall, this was a good start for the series with a nice May/December romance and an intriguing mystery plot. Recommendable!

“The Knights Club” is a nice start to a new series with lot’s of potential from CJ Baty. There’s mention of a few characters from “Warfield Hotel Mysteries”: Stoney and Ian, Peter and an appearance from Damien Fitzgerald, who brings great news about his husband Robert Wyler. Xavier and Seb have a nice chemistry even though they’re eighteen years apart. Xavier being fifty has his worries about Seb not wanting to be with an older man. But they make for a sweet and understanding couple. Even though we get an in-depth look at both characters I’m sure we’ll hear from them again. Xavier also has his hands full with lot’s of colorful employees of the club: Pixie, Calypso, Rio, Philip, and Tiny.

Seb is a cop. Fed up with the rampant homophobia in the department, specially from his own brother. He quits and gets a job bartending at the Knights Club. Xavier bought the club as a way of starting over. Disillusioned with life, he just want to run his club on his terms.

He realizes he wants his new bartender but he doesn’t mix business and pleasure. Until he does. Seb wants Xavier just as bad. When they start a relationship neither man expects it to turn into love.

For a short story I felt like there was a lot of personality development. Both with the main characters and several secondary players. A little bit of mystery and way to much of Seb’s bigoted brother. A nice story.

Starting Over is fast-paced, witty, and entertaining. And for an added bonus, we get a silver fox in a May/December romance. This first book introduces us to some of the characters in The Knights Club series and while there are several, it's not overwhelming. Each character is distinctive and has their own personality. The focus is on Seb and Xavier, and they are adorable together. The angst level is pretty low with most of it coming from Seb's family, and problems are resolved quickly, at least on the surface. To sum it up, this one is a good start to what looks to be an entertaining series with an engaging group of characters.

This was my first book by this author. This is a sexy novella and a quick read.

Sebastian Brady (Seb) is a detective with the Atlanta PD, until that one day he finally decides that enough is enough. He is done with the attitude of his fellow officers in regards to him being gay.

Xavier Knight is the new owner of The Knights Club and is looking to bring some new life into this new adventure.

Both Seb and Xavier are looking for a new beginning…a fresh start. Both not really looking for love, but one look at each other and the chemistry is all ready starting!

Looks like this will be a great series! I am looking forward to reading more stories by this author.

I enjoyed this, for such a short book it managed to pack quite a punch. The characters were developed, the relationship between the two mc’s seemed believable, overall it was very well written.

The book also sets up small snippets of other characters that are obviously going to have their own books in the series. I’m looking forward to reading the rest.

I think the story here was good. What brought this down in stars for me was the editing. There were character names spelled differently consistently in the book.

That being said, the story of Seb and Xavier and how they came to their happy ending is a good one.

A Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words Review An Alisa Review:

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

I enjoyed this story but at the same time it felt a bit blah to me. Seb has spent his whole life trying to be what his brothers and father thought he should be and he finally breaks free of their expectations to find the happiness he longs for. Xavier had his happy ending ripped away from him and tries hard to resist his pull to Seb but constant interaction and their quick and easy friendship make it hard for him to wait too long.

Seb and Xavier both are at the club to start over, though for very different reasons. Seb’s family’s bigoted view almost throw his chance out the window but he is able to make Xavier see reason. I can’t imagine how lonely Seb’s life had been with only really his sister around anymore and all the tensions at work, it’s not hard to see why he broke away from that life. Xavier gets a sort of fresh start with taking over the club and finds much more with it.

I was really surprised at how easily Xavier accepted Seb’s offer at the end of the book after what happened to him before. I felt these two fell together a little too quick and permanently with how many obstacles were still standing in the way and they often brushed little things aside that felt like they should have been more important to the outcome.

The cover art by Select-O-Grafix is okay but gives visuals of the characters.

2,5 heart review by Kat

A new series from a new-to-me author.

This series sounded like it checked off all the things I like in a book:

A older (50ish) Silver Fox main character ✅
Younger man that goes after what he wants ✅
Starting over after love turned bad ✅
Hardened man after being let go for someone half his age ✅
Love over fear ✅
Relocating to escape past love gone wrong ✅

Then you add in homophobic father and brother that are macho police officers but expect their son/brother to follow the family way and forget his being gay. Seb is a disgrace to the family name in a city that their name meant something big at the Atlanta Police Department. A name that crushed prostitution and had no patience for disgusting homosexuals. When Sebastian Brady had it with the Atlanta PD, and their disgust in him, he walked into his captain’s office and turned in his badge and gun. He was done and no one, not even his domineering/controlling brother was going to change his mind. The moment that Xavier Knight realized that the extremely handsome man his friend sent over needing a job and a place to stay was a Brady all hell broke loose. The Brady’s had screwed up his life enough when he was young and used to live in Atlanta. When Zavier discovers that Seb is gay and had to endure living under Del Brady’s roof his heart softened. But how can they forge on when Seb’s Police Captain’s brother is after all that Zavier has put in to his club and Seb’s independence from his family?

I really wanted to like this book/series and would have rounded up to a 3 Hearts, however this book really, really needs a proofreader/editor to fix all the typos and mistakes that tended to pull you out the story and try and figure out what was meant at that spot. That and, even though this is a novella, and an introduction to the series, I fear that this is going to be Zavier and Seb’s only story. The next book already says it’s about Calypso, the brash and super sexy waiter. And though I am stoked to see where his story is going to go with Benedict, the gorgeous male escort in the Armani suit that lit Calypso’s Fire, I feel like Zavier and Seb’s story was rushed and had to continue to fight with the introduction of all of the Knight’s Club cast of players. I think that they needed a bit more time and growth to get where they were. I am really hoping that more of their story will come through in the future because they are a huge part of why there is a Knight’s Club. I am looking forward to the next book in this series to see how it goes because, even though the editing was rough and the men’s story seemed rushed, I liked the characters and what to know what happens next.
