Susan Hyatt is a Life Coach. She has a website promoting her services, one of which is the Bare 7-week telecourse. It costs nearly $3000. Susan (justifiably) doesn’t like the dieting industry and the way they make money out of women’s desperation to lose weight. She has been accused of making money out of the same cohort…
Reservations aside, this is a likeable book with a positive message and a manageable step-by-step approach with assignments to complete. My favourite chapter is ‘Show up and be seen’ – a real reminder to grasp life with both hands – today.
There’s nothing really ground-breaking here – much of it is a repackaging of the kind of advice you might give your teenage daughter – but if you’re feeling unhappy with your body and your life, you could do worse than follow this plan. You might even enjoy it. It might even save you $3000.

Susan Hyatt gets 5 stars for a fantastic guide book into living an authentic life...
Yes, I've read my fair share of self-help books but it's the one's I constantly refer back to and the ones I never forget that have the greatest impact on my life, Bare is one of those books. I've read it and yes it has a lot of stuff I already read before but never truly implemented, I'm guessing it a combination of picking up the right book at the right time and Susan's writing style it really spoke to me.
I'm enjoying the 7 weeks program and i really loved the book.

A good reading
I thought it was going to be a self-care book and a guide to loss weight and it's a lot more, it's a journey through the writer's story, one you can take with her. It's NOT a diet book, it's about listen and understand your body and its needs, always with common sense. Think healthy, LOVE YOURSELF, eat healthy and you can enjoy life (plus, you'll lose weight and never see it again). Of course there are some exercises and tips, but it's mostly about a change of mind that will change your body as well.

I am sorely disappointed in this book and feel highly mislead. I researched the top books having to do with self love and this book came highly reviewed and recommended.

The misleading part was that I believed based on the cover/jacket description that this book was having to do with true acceptance of your flaws/body, as well as gaining more energy, transforming your mindset, etc. I was wrong. This book was SOLELY based on weight loss. On loving yourself as a concept for losing weight. Even the chapter involving decluttering your closet, had little to do with anything other than weight related issues.

Don’t get me wrong. I have been there, done that. Six years ago I lost 200 lbs so I do feel significantly more qualified to give weight loss advice than this author who lost a mere 35 lbs. I understand that weight loss is a substantially difficult thing to do, mainly having to do with your overall emotional well-being and the drive to care enough about yourself to make a true change. HOWEVER, weight is always something that CAN be changed. What I was hoping with this book was help and advice on mindset surrounding body parts and flaws that CANNOT be changed (at least not without radical surgery). What if your self hatred and criticism stem from flaws and issues with your body that simply cannot be changed with eating right and exercise?

The pros for me are that the book was a quick and easy read. The author poured a lot of her own personal experiences into the book.

The cons are simply that this should be marketed as a weight loss plan, not a “transform your life, self love, self help” book. It doesn’t give you a lot of new or exciting information. It was repetitive in a lot of the mantras and advice. The sole take away was that anytime you feel like eating, think about what feels like love instead. The weight will just melt off. It did not touch on ways to actually embrace your body/love your body, how to truly curb overthinking regarding criticism/hatred. How to make amends with things that are objectively flaws, or how to truly find acceptance.

I’m here because of Rachel Rodgers.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I will have to re-visit it soon. I love books that provide a new perspective on the things we do in life. What a refreshing take.

It was ok, but not for me. It was a little too "love yourself and you will immediately stop eating junk food and become amazing!" which is just not true for most people.

This book was received as an ARC from BenBella Books in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own.

I have read a lot of inspiring novels and weight loss, better you books in my career but this one I feel is extra personal because of Susan incorporating her personal experiences and struggles that made me feel as the reader not alone and part of a conversation as if we were meeting for lunch or coffee. I also loved the tips she had in the novel of real life situations such as social media and how to avoid toxic posts, tv shows and people in your life and I know from experience that can definitely lead to downfall. Susan was very encouraging and sincere when writing this book and sometimes that is what readers need when embarking this journey.

We will consider adding this title to our Non-Fiction section at our library. That is why we give this book 5 stars.

This was a quick read but didn't say too much new for me. Her 7-week program looks at 7 different aspects of your life to change and then to concentrate on each one for a week. I found that I already do many of these already so I ended up skimming through those chapters.

Week 1 - clean up your environment. I am one who finds I do my best work in an organized room, whether it's my personal living space or work environment, it needs to be organized and clean of any clutter to do my best. So check, I already do this.

On to Week 2 - add pleasure into your day. This is the one life aspect that really spoke to me. "You're not overeating because you're weak. You're overeating because you're starving for pleasure" (p.65). This really hit home. I find I eat not so much because I'm hungry but because I'm bored. This chapter was by far my favorite and something I'll take away and focus on in my life. "When there's more pleasure in your life, your body can function optimally - the way it supposed to" (p.67).

The other aspects discussed: eating, exercising, decluttering, detoxing, and being seen, were just ok.

It's a very quick read and probably will have aspects that will speak to different people.

Let me premise that I've always been one to be against self-help books (sorry, not sure why I am so against them), but decided to pick this one up. I absolutely loved it and found it very helpful and insightful. This book will help you love yourself and overcome any hangups you may have about yourself.

This book tells you stuff you already know but in a cute manner, what matters to me the most was the stories of the ladies who went to Susan Hyatt as weight loss clients. Really love those, and I really hope she teaches more for 3000$ because this book was LIGHT.

What to know:

mindful eat

declutter your home

be relaxed

walk for exercise

Like I’ve said, light advice that takes time, natural weight loss.

This book presents the BARE program, divided in 7 parts or weeks.

The author does not believe in drastic diets but in intuitive and mindful eating, putting self-care and self-esteem first.

The main points of this program are presented via the author’s own experience and via her clients’ anecdotes.

While I enjoyed the style of the writing and personally agreed with most of the techniques, the notions were not new to me,having read several self-help and mindfulness books. I was probably expecting innovative ideas and points of view.

I don't know how I got the Audio version of this but figured its short so why not. Obviously I did not read this in 7 weeks and do all the tasks but I still think this had some good information. Worth the read but I did not enjoy the narration, which was done by the author.

I don't read too many self-help books, but I'm glad I did pick up this one. I appreciate Hyatt's approach to self-improvement mostly because some of the ideas she express are things that I've either thought of myself or have heard from other women. For example, at one point Hyatt states that many of us may find ourselves overeating because food is the only thing in our lives we associate with pleasure. I've had a friend who has basically said those exact words to me about herself, so I feel like the author is on the right course for uncovering issues of internal feedback. I'm not sure if I'll go through the whole seven week program, but I do think there are aspects that I will integrate into my life. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the eARC.

Approachable ~ Honest ~ Useful
tl:dr: You have hang-ups, so did Hyatt. She can tell you how she changed.

I am a book-cover judger, usually. I pick up books to read based on aesthetics. I read this one for the cover. But, I'm glad that I did. The book deals with how one woman learned to like herself, itself a transgressive act. Much of this book deals with weight and health. The author, rightly I believe, suggests all our outside manifestations of inaction and second-guessing come from internal challenges. She helps us address these challenges. This is an honest, straight-forward self-help book. I appreciated her matter-of-fact tone.

I know people are going to hate on this book, but it helped me a LOT. I'll list my qualms with it below, but I think it's worth a read regardless, especially if you are mentally struggling. The first few chapters were a blessing and they carried me through the week. It kind of lost power (or maybe I lost power?) later on in the book, but if I could just buy a copy and re-read the first couple chapters every few nights, I think my life would change for the better.

I want to detract a whole star, though, because of how... kind of inconsistent some themes are? There is a lot of emphasis placed on self love and how this will help you shed extra pounds, but then the images in the book are different, but then the author talks about how she almost slips up and overeats every week, but also she talks about how baring your skin and wearing a bikini is so powerful... I mean, it's not bad, it's just a little confusing.

Feeling good and getting healthy goes hand in hand but most books focused on the better you, they only cover one topic, usually… and if they reveal more it can be hard to digest. That is not the case with Bare. I was pleasantly surprised and all the little, uplifting, inspirational gems hidden within the covers.

The fact that it’s more than a quick read, Bare takes you on a journey to finding the real you, the one who feels great, has more energy and finds confidence within!

Thank you to Netgally, Susan Hyatt, and BenBella Books for the ARC!

I really liked the first half of this book. I felt like the second half was just filler. Like her odd chapter of 1,000 exercise ideas she obviously just Googled. Putting pleasure into other parts in your life, not just food, is life changing.
Personal boundaries and being kind to yourself are definitely the driving forces to stop overeating. Overall, I would recommend this for anyone who's tired of calculating how many peanuts they are allowed to eat today. It's a broader look at personal wellness as one whole. Not just diet.

I bought this book because I’ve struggled with body image issues my whole life. I loved Susan’s approach to bring my pleasure in your life and decluttering everything! I feel so energized and even though it’s a daily practice I’m not focusing on a number on the scale but more in how I feel in life! Which is awesome!

I hate giving books such a low rating but I just did not love this. Too much talk about wearing bikinis, clothes and materialistic things. I did think her concepts were good but her backing for them just wasn’t for me. And the constant talk about how people give her a hard time on social media clouded her message. I almost felt like she wanted people to feel sorry for her...I don’t know.

It's mostly a to-be-expected self-help book, but with much more sustainable practices than the average American religious quest or yo-yo diet weight loss scheme. Hyatt has sweet personal anecdotes and a self-made success story that's sure to inspire other humans who have struggled with body image and unhealthy means for weight loss to treat their bodies as friends and live a healthier life.

I dig that the author is from Indiana and has come through successfully with her career and continues helping others. I especially dig the chapter on tools to deal with toxic thoughts and recognizing that not everything you think is true, very useful things there.

Mostly the other chapters you can discern the bulk of from the index honestly -it's all useful and very good tooltips for life that you know how to do and go do it for your happiness and health.
1)clean up your environment: look at what is around you daily and remove what is toxic. Hate that your yard stinks? clean it. Hate that you can't sleep? Start researching and practice healthy wind-down strategies.
2)Add pleasure to your day: indulgence is good for you in small quantities, do what brings you joy.
3)Eat with attentiveness: mindful eating, slow down. I would also add mindful consuming so pay attention to what you eat and where it comes from.
4)Exercise with love: move how you like to move and do it 3x a week. I'd expand this way further but I'm an athlete and personal trainer.
5)Declutter your closet: yep, Kondo that shit. It makes all the difference.
6)Detox your mind: that's the lovely chapter with specific tools for combating negative thoughts
7)Show up and be seen: celebrate yourself and your style, live overtly, call out racists and homophobes around you, use your voice *loudly*, for good.

The knowledge Susan Hyatt has to offer is not only applicable to eating and exercise but how you life your life in general.
Her guiding principle is loving yourself. When you go to do something ask yourself, "does this feel like love?" Whether its picking a tv show to watch, a new duvet cover, what you're going to eat for dinner, clothes you might be considering discarding.
She also emphasizes creating a space that feels uniquely you, and a space that makes you feel like your best self. She gives ways to improve your bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, living space, car, social circle, etc.

It is NOT a book about dieting, it is NOT your typical self-help book. It is simple and straightforward and very impactful... regardless of the cover. This one really exemplifies the saying 'never judge a book by its cover.'

I loved this book. I wasn't sure how to read it since it's a 7-week program. At first I thought I'd read a chapter a week, but that did not work for me. I started slow, doing the assignments weekly, and then got impatient and read through the whole book (and then read it again). I think the way it goes is that readers will each have their challenging chapters/weeks. The tidying week was easy-peasy since I already hit Marie Kondo like a mad woman this summer. But the bringing pleasure and asking "does this bring me love" were two sections I grappled with. The 7-week angle is full of bologna, but I feel like Susan Hyatt says that too. You're examining your life and that is a lifetime project. If you're looking for an approach to making changes in your life that is empowering, this is a great start.

For the most part, I could see myself as the author in this book… working a job with long, crazy hours, not knowing if you’re coming or going in life and trying to be the one to do it all for your family. I liked her weekly ideas of things to do to help de-clutter your surroundings, which helps clean the mind. She’s spot on with diet programs like the big names (which I won’t name) but you have to be motivated. Motivated to change, recognize it’s in you to change and then change. In the process you have to change those things around you. These are things that aren’t a weekly thing but has to be daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly. She did give me food for thought and I did do a lot of what she suggested. I just need to dig deep within myself to stick to it. That’s always the hurdle with most of us. I would recommend it though. She has an upbeat approach and shows you that you can do it.

Content: The book talks about the 7 week BARE process by Susan Hyatt. Instead of believing in meal plans and a structured (read restrictive) diet, Hyatt believes in mindful eating and taking care of your environment. The approach is definitely not new but presented well by Hyatt.

Writing: The book reads well and doesn't lag anywhere. The writing is conversational and easy to go through.

Miscellaneous: I believe that mindset is very important in weight loss success but I also know that it's important to understand some basics of weight loss process, things like muscle building, whole grains, transfats and cardiac health. This info would have been a nice addition to the book.

I received a free copy of the book from Netgalley. It doesn't influence my opinion in any way.

Tää on jotenkin jännän amerikkalainen valinta Hidasta elämää -kustannettavaksi. En voi kyl kamalasti suositella. Sisällöllisempää self helpiä on kirjoitettu. Toinen tähti tulee selkeästä rakenteesta ja/tai lukijan tylsyydentäyttelystä.

Although this book is written for women, the messages are also applicable to men. The book is well written and concise in its advice. The author outlines a seven stage plan (framed as weeks, but presented that there is flexibility to go longer. Actually, once a stage is implemented, it is meant to continue going forward. The main concept is to help a person to think positive about themselves and treating oneself with respect. Eating practices are changed from diet plans to healthy foods slowly without over indulging. Weight loss comes more with change of attitude than because of a diet plan. I think the practices suggested will improve one’s quality of life and should be tried whether there is an accompanying weight loss or not.

I love Susan so much. I am proud to call her a client of mine and also a friend and amazingly gifted coach.

I went to Susan's BARE book launch event in NYC. So much fun!!

I then read the book 3 times in a row and worked through it with my mom and my sister.

It was truly powerful - especially because I was reading it at the end of my pregnancy and postpartum with my daughter. I was having tiny body confidence issues, mostly because I felt gigantic (and had someone ask me 'how many babies I had in there'). I've always been petite, but suddenly I had gigantic boobs (breastfeeding) and none of my clothes fit. BARE saved my life and my sanity.

I've come to realize that I really enjoy listening to self help/self empowering books while at work. And now that I'm utilizing my library card, I won't feel bad about wasting money on them, in case I end up hating them haha. This was good! I think all books in this genre come with a minimum amount of cringe, and this one reflects that. But it was tolerable. The author is a life coach and some of this is geared towards a her "program", which is super expensive, but I did take a lot of good advice from this book. We think that we have to completely remodel ourselves and our homes but making yourself happy is not that difficult. I liked this one!

I really loved this book. I plan to read it again. I do like self-help books, and after as many as I have read, this makes me feel the most hopeful.

Each week focus on an area of your life that can improve through small efforts and a lot of mindfulness. From your environment, daily pleasures, attentive eating, exercising with love, cleaning out the closet, detoxing the mind, to showing up and being seen, Hyatt stands by an approach of choosing love. When we stop hating ourselves and our bodies we magically become lighter and happier about the person we are.

See! It’s good stuff. Check it out!
