Wow. Um, ok.
It wasn't the worst storyline I've ever read. Definitely fell on the eh side of meh, but it still might have worked if the dialogue wasn't so clunky.
Cl-unky.

description

First, there's this Fear thing overtaking the Justice League, then Jessica and Barry go on this awkward date, more of the Fear thing, then...the Justice League gets hacked?
Well, the Watchtower, Batcave, GL's rings, and Cyborg get taken over by something/someone. Once they fight that (and sort of figure out what happened), a group of villains attack them because someone/something put a bjillion dollar price tag on their lives.
sigh

description

The writing was ok in the sense that I could read it, but there were several times that I physically cringed over what was coming out of a character's mouth. And there were also several times when it seemed like the author didn't know how to get the League out of a particular situation because suddenly in the panels POOF! they just...won the battle.
I don't know if I'm explaining it right, but it was weird to look at and jarring to read.

description

Bottom line? Blech. I was always excited to grab the New 52 Justice League title because (even with plot holes) it was a fun title to read. This is just a vaguely passable storyline with gawky dialogue.

Batman: Let's get the boys together and strike back at their home. HARD!

^Actual Batman dialog....for real now...(Small update to show how bad this is)

Wish could give this 0. This is one of the worst dialog written comics I ever read. Bryan Hitch is a solid artist. Love his work on Ultimates. But this is so bad. The dialog is awful! Like so bad. Characters act out of character over and over again and say dumb shit (especially Batman) and both these arcs wrap up so quickly with no stakes it makes me facepalm. It's a shitty version of Grid from John's run, but even shittier. Also fuck that fear arc...terrible.

Yeah. Dropping this one till a new team is on it.

First up is a 2 part story where the JL fights an oily black water that eats fear. After they think they've beat it, they go home and all start acting out of character because well, fear, I guess.

After that, the JL is attacked by a virus that can do anything. It transmits into Cyborg over a TV broadcast he watches. Then it instantly jumps into Green Lantern's ring because you know ancient alien races that police the universe don't bother with putting security into its technology. turns out some kid hacked this together on their ipad. Then all these supervillains show up because the virus put a hit out on the JL. Even Scarecrow shows up, because guys with no powers except hallucinogenic gas think they can take out the Justice League. The whole thing is beyond ridiculous.

The Good: The art is not bad, but nothing special.

The Bad: Everything about this book is bad. The writing is dreadful.

The Ugly: How did the Justice League come to this? It's coming out as a movie this year and they put an artist in as the writer who's never written anything before. This should be one of their premiere titles.

This was an okayish read!

We pick up with various members of the JL wanting the other dead like whats going on with Jess and Barry on a date, Clark attacking Bruce and then whatever changed in Diana and Arthur but then to find something had sort of infected them and how they fight it off or get free from it is the story then satellite crashing and how they prevent that to only find it might be related to one of the victims from previous volumes attack by "the kindred" and then various villains after the JL like Fearsome Five and Amazo (from new 52)!

It gets tedious in the beginning but by the end is action packed and shows how JL can't save everyone and yeah the villain fight could have lasted long but the one with Amazo was cool and I like how the team worked and the dynamics there and also some big things with Jess with amazing art throughout. It may not be everyone's cup of tea but its an okayish read for sure.

This volume starts off in the middle of a battle between the Justice League and some kind of being that spreads fear. After the team seemingly defeats it, they all split off only to get hit again with the fear causing everyone to lash out in different ways. Aquaman and Wonder Woman decide to conquer the world together to save everyone. Superman decides he must kill Batman. Cyborg and Baz lash out at those around them during a friendly football game between friends out of fear of being rejected for being different. While on a date together, Flash starts acting like a jerk to everyone and Jessica locks herself in the restaurant freezer to shut out the world. After some painful dialogue from everyone as they fight off the fear, Jessica decides to quit the Justice League because she feels she isn't ready for this. And that's the only consequence we see from this little arc in the rest of the book. Nothing is mentioned about Aquaman and Wonder Woman's declaring of war. No damage control for any of the public breakdowns some of the heroes had. I just have to wonder what the point of it all was.

It just feels like the book is going for emotional payoffs that it hasn't put any effort into building toward. Jessica suddenly asking Flash out wasn't the result of a building relationship between the two. Her choice to quit the team due to feelings of inadequacy felt abrupt. This is supposed to be a team book, but there's not any focus on how they are as a team. The fear arc feels like it should come after work has been put into establishing everyone much better as characters and team mates. An arc exposing the cracks in the team doesn't pack much of a punch if I haven't really gotten a good idea of what the team is like together. And it especially doesn't pack a punch if all consequences of the arc are then ignored. The end of the book even lessened the impact of Jessica quitting by having her join in the big battle of the next arc and saying she'll always be there to help. So she'll fight with the team still, but just won't say she's on the team.

The second arc in this volume started off with a premise that I found hard to buy. Apparently the giant world-wide crisis of the previous volume that they had such a difficult time with only had a single casualty. I don't understand how only a single person died from all of that. And then we get a computer virus so great it can hack into anything including Cyborg and Baz's ring. I'll admit the Lantern Corps is an area I'm not as familiar with, but I really didn't think their rings could be infected with a computer virus. Is that something I just completely missed? Because it just seems really ridiculous. I don't like it. There were just too many elements of the story I was questioning for me to enjoy it. And it didn't have any good character moments to make up for things.

This Justice League run is not impressing me. The first volume was boring. This one was just painful.

World: The art is meh, it should not be this way, this is a DC flagship title this should be illustrated by the likes of Jim Lee or Ivan Reis or any number of big names for DC but instead we get middle of the road low budget Dark Horse level art and colors. It’s not terrible but this is not what we should be seeing. The world building is absolutely garbage. Hitch clearly cannot write and he clearly cannot plan and there is no long game for him because with the world that he’s built it shows. There is no larger picture there is no team building, there is no Justice League building, there is no deeper discussion of the world and how they react to the Justice League. There is just mindless pointless action that takes place and a world barely there that does not matter. Sure, one family was created for this arc but that is another problem altogether.

Story: This story is stupid. It’s mindless, it’s paced poorly and so ineptly written I’m at a loss for words of how DC allowed Hitch and this book to happen. The characters in this book don’t act they way they should and any obstacle and confrontation that happens in this book for dramatic purposes is stupid beyond words. We just did a Cyborg was hacked story, are doing the exact same thing again? Then we get to see Batman being stupid, Wonder Woman being bloodthirsty, Barry Allen being slow, Aquaman being a joke (when could he control water? He can’t…and yet there is a splash page where they are nowhere near water and he’s riding a fucking wave). What the fuck is this turd of a book. It’s insane how bad this is…it’s unbelievable. Then the entire premise with the iPAD what the flying fuck is that? How is that logical, how does it even work? You can’t say the virus is connected and then suddenly be able to isolate it, that does not work, that’s not howtech works, what the hell??!! That end….SOOOOOOOO deus ex and SOOOOOOO stupid.

Characters: The family that was created and the situations that this book allows to happen is astoundingly stupid and full of dumb illogical character choices. The family…so very derivative. Then there are the heroes that don’t act themselves. This is the dumbest Batman I’ve read in a while and the most bloodthirsty Diana we’ve had since New52 this is all wrong. Then there’s the dialog and the choices they makes…It’s astounding how stupid it is.

I am using stupid a lot and I apologize for not being eloquent in my review but this book is intellectually bankrupt and a complete waste of time. It’s a pieces of shit and I can’t believe DC gave Hitch 30 issues!!!! 30!!!!! WTF!!!!!???

Onward to the next book!

State of Fear (6-7). Heroes act out of character because of evil, alien mind control. Pretty much never a good plot, and not a good plot here either. There's the potential for some cool interaction between Barry and Jess, but, yeah, that's pretty much sabotaged by alien mind control too. [4/10].

Outbreak (8-11). When members of the JL are hacked by a super-computer virus, that turns out to be just the same as alien mind control, so thanks for another two issues of that. But, that turns out to be the high point of the next story, which reveals that they're fighting against Super-Google and then has an insanely long and boring battle against a bunch of who-cares villains. So very, very dull. [3/10].

Overall, Bryan Hatch's JLA continues to be one of the worst in years. I'll read the suicide squad crossover, then I think I'm done.

Nice to see the Justice League again. Glad they were able to stop themselves from turning on each other. Hope they will be able to help the people who lost their homes.

Another fast-paced action-packed volume that hits the ground running. This time the enemy is using fear to get to the JL members. They are paralyzed with fear and can't work anywhere near to full potential. A whole bunch of Grade B & C villains turn up which was great fun; I'd only heard of a few of them. The particular crisis is averted but now they are gearing up for what they expect to come next which is something even bigger. I'm really enjoying this JL team. All the regular big names with 2 newbie Green Lanterns instead of one of the regulars.

Did Justice League turn into a kid's series when I wasn't looking?

Holy crap, this volume was terrible. If I thought the writing from Justice League, Volume 1: The Extinction Machines was bad, this is even worse.

Again with "win through the willpower" BS. It's like Hitch can't come up with scenarios that the League can overcome through any means other than "try harder."

I started skimming about halfway through but I'm pretty sure a kid's iPad accidentally hacked the Justice League and almost killed them. 'Cause Cyborg, Batman, and the makers of the Green Lanterns' rings handle cybersecurity so badly that a random AI that's plugged into an iPad can overcome them.

Also, after all the "off the Richter Scale" earthquakes of the first volume, one person died? Are you kidding me? And why would anyone expect the Justice League to be the primary/only force on Earth that could combat (seemingly) natural disasters?

And don't even get me started on Flash and Jessica Cruz's "date." Does Bryan Hitch know how real people interact with one another?

It's all so unbelievably stupid. Like something out of a really bad Saturday morning cartoon.

I'm definitely done with Justice League until they get Bryan Hitch off the book. I don't know how good of an artist he is but it looks like he can't write for shit.

Really not getting the strong hate for this book. While not the most original story, it's presented in a straight forward manner and it's interesting in how the League, along with an assist from a civilian, take down what causes the Outbreak.

The first story about a creature that causes fear, well it was pretty tame. I liked seeing some of the more personal interactions between the Leaguers but the story could have been much stronger.

It was great seeing all the super villains take on the JL. Hearkens back to when the League has fought the Secret Society of Super Villains.

Hitch needs to work on his dialog, but it was not as distracting as in volume 1.

A man filled with grief hacks in vengeance. He creates an A. I. that trys to bring it’s operator’s dreams to life. Genie is alive and it’ll give you anything you want. Genie is in the hands of a family who lost their mother and wife. A Genie who can hack the Watchtower, Cyborg, and a Green Lantern ring. The world is going to pay.

Why this book:
It’s Justice League.
_________________________________________________

The Feel:
When I read hacking in the blurb, I had misgivings going in. Hacking the Watchtower, Cyborg, the Batcave, okay, all human based systems. But a GL ring, that’s ludicrous on the same level as Jeff Goldblum hacking a city sized alien spacecraft in Independence Day.

The family scenes are way saccharine.

Favorite Scene / Quote:
Cyborg riding the Watchtower down after it was hacked.

Missed Opportunity:
There was a potentially very good story here, but it got lost.
_________________________________________________

Last Page Sound:
Final fight, despite the Amazo incident, was anti-climactic and over way too easily. No one knocked them down. No one took them out. The villains should have stood up again...again.

Editorial Assessment:
The overall story could have stood a bit closer to the editor’s red pen.

Knee Jerk Reaction:
Meh!

Looks like most of us agree that the dialogue was (again) sort of clunky. However, I enjoyed volume 2 more than the predecessor and thought there were signs of improvement - there was some humor! - in other areas. Also, there's nothing like seeing the dynamic duo of Batman & . . . Alfred (?) in action.

'Outbreak,' the second story, was the better of the two - I liked that the plot, which had a few good twists and turns, touched on the oft-downplayed angle of collateral damage of the superhero / super-villain skirmishes.

I would have liked this better if it felt more cohesive. The first story arc doesn't seem connected to the second (unless I'm missing something). I feel like the fear arc could have been cool if finished in its own, and that the genie arc could have stood on its own as well later. And both would have been more interesting for it. I enjoyed watching Batman and Alfred in the cave scene though, and also the interaction between Batman and Superman. But overall this felt like two stories put into one book.

Mitä tapahtuu, jos supersankarit pelkäävät? Mitä tapahtuu, jos supersankarien voimat kääntyvät heitä vastaan? Mitä tapahtuu, jos supersankarit kääntyvät toisiaan vastaan?

Tästä kirjasta selviää yksi tulkinta noihin kysymyksiin.

This is another book that I read a month ago and I'm just now getting around to reviewing. I hated volume 1 of this series so bad that I didn't plan on reading any more of it until I found out that I had gotten a copy of Justice League vs Suicide Squad from Netgalley. Since I had read volume 1 of this series and this book leads directly into the crossover event, I felt like I needed to read this one. I'm glad I did because the story is so much better than what was in volume 1. I was ready to boycott any title with Bryan Hitch as writer, but I made have made that decision too hastily. I'll still be wary when picking up any of his books because of how godawful the writing for beginning of this series was, but this book gives me hope that his books may turn out to be enjoyable.

The art in this didn't look like total garbage, but it doesn't look the way I expect a JL book to look. I know I got spoiled with artists like Jim Lee working on previous iterations of the group, but this is one of the premier titles at DC and it contains all of the most popular characters together. The creative staff should be just as top notch as the characters they are writing and drawing, but so far in Justice League's Rebirth title, that has not been the case. While previous artists on Justice League books like the aforementioned Jim Lee and Ivan Reis may be superstars like Batman and Superman, the current crop of artists are more akin to Elongated Man and Apache Chief with the exception Of Tom Derenick. He provides the best art in the book, but even he isn't a major star. He is one of the second tier artists at DC. He produces good work, but none of it is truly memorable. He'd probably equate to one of the sidekicks at DC like Kid Flash. Many people may know who he is, but he still isn't deserving of the Justice League.

The overall rating for this one is 3 stars due to the writing and art aspects both receiving 3 stars. That's way better than I could have hoped for after how much I hated the first volume. I dreaded reading this. Maybe going in with my hopes so low made the book better. While this book may be better than volume 1, I still can't recommend this to long time JL fans. New readers may enjoy it if you aren't very familiar with any of the main characters.

This book is horrible. I finally saw what they are trying to do with this new run of the JL comics: they are trying to destroy everything that came together and made Geoff Johns run so great.

This book is one part Vol 4: The Grid from the last run and one part full-out stupidly crazy. Nothing is believable or makes sense. The ending comes from no where with a resolution you have to assume. But worst of all, it spends most of its time trying to make you feel something that it has not earned or deserves. If this was part of Johns run, then *maybe* I would feel something. But this is not that Justice League. It's a new origin story. And it's horrible.

The best thing that would come about from the collapse of the internet is no more hacking stories. Seriously, we have all these superpowered people, and we're going up against a body-less AI. Blech.

Oh, and a story where there's some weird anger being that infects the team, and they all get pissed at each other. That was okay, it served to get the individual team members' deep dark fears on front street, which was cool.

I think I miss the Grant Morrison Justice League. The bad guys were really stupid sometimes, but at least they had punchable bodies.

So wait, let me get this straight-this teenage girl stole her dads code and hacked the Justice League using an iPad?
Bwahahahaahha... this is one of the most ridiculous stories I’ve ever read! She created a virus, destroyed the Justice League watchtower, destroyed the Batcave, took over Cyborg, and then... wait... get this... she f**king hacked Green Lanterns ring! Bwahahhaha... get the f**k out of here!

“So we nearly got our butts handed to us by Google” (an actual line by Flash)

The only thing worthwhile in this book is the art!
