Not the strongest collection—this is an earlier work, and he keeps getting better with time—but the last two poems really solidify this as a masterful work.

The poems in this collection tell stories, stories of country life and Vietnam War life. There is a simplicity to the story-telling, but also illumination in the tellings. Favorites in this collection are, "Surrounding Blues on the Way Down" and "Song of Napalm."
