Many thanks to WaterBrook & Multnomah and Netgalley for the chance to read this book early!
As any mother knows, there is rarely a silent moment in life. We have voices coming at us from all directions, it seems. There are endless wants, needs, and demands made at almost every moment of every day. The things we accomplish are often done while we're distracted, rushed, or frazzled. It's a miracle anything ever gets done while we're surrounded by so much noise. As terrible as it sounds, the reality is, it often feels like adding one more thing to the to-do list to tune into the quiet voice of God while we're surrounded by the numerous demands in our physical world.
Becky Thompson's simple devotionals for busy mothers take readers back to the Biblical truths we too often put on the back burner in our tedious and mostly monotonous lives. I appreciated Becky sharing her own stories in each devotional mixed with God's paraphrased word. This book allows mothers to feel a bit of solidarity despite the loneliness we often feel while in the thick of raising young children. This book is encouraging and helps us realize how important it is to tune out Satan's attacks on not only our thoughts but our time and energy as well. When we read the Bible, or through the middle ground of this devotional, we are able to feel renewed in the Truths God wants us to hold onto.
Through reading this, I felt convicted to return to writing my prayers down and coming back in the future to write how God came through. Not only for myself to see how God is working in my life, but for the sake of posterity. I loved the author's example of reading how her mother had prayed specific things for her and was able to see how those prayers came to fruition.
I think this book is a great reminder to seek God, even in the middle of the most monotonous parts of life. We have been given the gift of the Spirit to be with us at all times, whether it's the middle of the night with a sick child or while we're washing dishes. God will use those moments to help us feel a sense of renewal and strength in His presence.
I love this new devotional book from Becky Thompson! You can read each chapter in just a few minutes, but they really touch your heart and help you focus on what's true from God's Word. Becky shares many practical stories from her own experience and ties them into one main thought from Scripture. Many times tears came to my eyes as I related to what she wrote. The prayers at the end of each chapter are so encouraging. Thank you, Becky! Highly recommended to all moms.
Truth Unchanging ⭐️ For starters im only a mother to my pets (and this is directed towards mothers kind of) but I still thought this was beautiful.
My favorite chapter was Dont follow Fear. She said that dhe makes a list of things that could potentially go wrong... what if... what if... I do this too. Its easy to shrivle up with fear because there are so many things that can go wrong so sometimes we dont do something or say something due to the fear inside of us. Jesus says to follow him but most of deicde to follow fear.
I also really liked her I Have Already aseen this Moment chapter because it has to do with healing and anointed with oil and the grace of God. James 5:14
I thought the Corresponding Bible verses worked well with her segments and I thought there were alot of good stories and helpful lessons throughout.
Thank you so much to waterbrook press via netgalley for sending me an ARC copy of Truth unchanging by Becky Thompson. This will be released on April 16,2019. All opinions are my own.
This book was filled with so much wisdom that it was tough not to finish without learning anything. Even if you are not a mother or not a Christian, there will still be a lesson/theme taken away from this book. We are always on the lookout for self-help and books that give advice and of course books that promote positivity and Truth Unchanging did exactly that. What a joy to read!
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC in exchange for an honest review. We will definitely consider adding this title to our self-help Non-Fiction section in our library. That is why we give this book 5 stars!
I received a copy of this from Netgalley and WaterBrook & Multnomah in exchange for my honest review. I think Becky does a good job of apply everyday stories to the stories of the Bible. Very positive and uplifting
As Mothers we are constantly on the go whether we have young kids, older kids or fur kids. All mothers have one thing in common. The love of their families. We strive constantly to give more, do more, be more until we are completely exhausted. What “Truth Unchanging” gives us is those few quiet moments with God that will renew our hearts, revitalize our energy and bring a sense of peace and calm into our busy lives. God will meet us, right where we are, right in the middle of our mess. I love how Becky Thompson shares her personal journey through motherhood and weaves it so effortlessly with Scripture. We can identify with her as a mother and we can also take that one step closer to an intimate relationship with God. In just a few minutes a day we can find wisdom and encouragement to be the best mothers we can be. Thank you to WaterBrook & Multnomah and NetGalley for an advanced copy of this book to review. It was an absolute blessing.
This book by Becky Thompson is structured as a devotional, but could also be read just as a book - a few chapters at a time! Her focus on hearing God's voice - particularly as a mom - was encouraging and uplifting! The way she interweaves it with various stories from the Bible was impressive. I'd recommend this book to any mom!
I received an ARC copy from netgalley for my honest review, so thank you netgalley and publishers for offering me this book! ♡ The cover and title is what originally drew me to this book. A devotional for moms by a mom. It's hard for me to fully evaluate a devotional book when I read it like a regular book. To me, devotional books are meant to be read day by day instead of in one big sitting. I find myself growing impatient with the style. I will say this though, this was a good book.
Becky starts with Genesis and works her way chronologically through the Bible with 75 different devotionals. Each one has a little thought of what God might be saying to you along with a prayer to God as well as a regular devotional/reading part.
There were some geared more specifically to moms and some that would apply to a general population.
I needed the reminder to pray, pray, pray for my children. Pray for them now and also pray for them for the years to come. Becky tells the story of her mom sending her a picture of a journal entry from before Becky was born in which her mom was praying that someday Becky would be an encouragement to other moms. How powerful is that, coming when Becky was working on a book for moms.
Another thing Becky talked about is that sometimes we needed to be a part of the miracle. If we are having a bad day and want it to be better, we need to do something about it. We need to make the choice to change our attitudes. We need to make the choice not to remain angry at our spouse. We can pray and ask God for help, but if we are still not willing to take action, it won't do any good.
I did enjoy this book and think it would make a really good book for the new mom in your life and also for the mom who seems weary with life or really any mom in general.
I received this book from Waterbrook/Multnomah on NetGalley. I was not required to write a positive review. And all quotes were taken from an uncorrected proof and may not be the same in the final draft.
Becky Thompson has a knack for knowing the words of wisdom that moms need to hear. Because she is in the thick of it with us mommas, she knows the thoughts that are constantly rolling through our heads on a regular basis. And she knows the way to remind us of the truth that settles our hearts.
While I'm typically not a huge fan of devotional books, I enjoyed this one. Thompson takes you on a journey in Truth Unchanging through the story of the Bible to help remind us of the truths of who we are in God. It was an invitation to find Jesus within the narrative and find the ways that he is speaking to us through the noise that happens in our daily lives. Each day of this devotional reminds you that God speaks directly to you through his words. It's the reminder that we can find those moments every day no matter the mess around us.
God is always for us, and Truth Unchanging is a daily reminder that that truth will never change. God himself never changes. And the way that he cares for us won't change either.
Truth Unchanging is a helpful way to begin a conversation with God on a daily basis to help tune your heart to the truth. It will breathe life into the mundane. This book gives focus to the noise and chaos of motherhood. It has helped me find meaning in even the most mundane of tasks. Truth Unchanging has given me more an ability to hear God's truths for moments of motherhood.
I received a copy of this book from NetGalley. This review is my own, honest opinion.
Everything that Becky Thompson promises this book will be in the introduction, it delivers. She knows motherhood is noisy and crowded. She knows the ideal is that you'd sit quietly and reflect on the character and blessings of God, but the reality is that children are climbing, demanding, and in constant need of something. This book has been perfectly tailored to every mother with short, bite-sized chapters of a few pages each containing scripture, a story or reflection, and a model prayer. Thompson understands the demands, the distractions, and the drain that parenting comes with, and offers an in-the-trenches resource that can be taken with you to run errands or read in the school pick-up line, and reminds us that our relationship with God is one of constant nearness and communication at any time of the night or day. Whether it's read quickly or contemplatively, this book is practical, accessible, encouraging, and has much to offer.
This book is a breath of fresh air for the mama run ragged. Becky Thompson wrote this book to be a tool for the busy mom whose day is anything but quiet. These devotions are a jumping off point fur your day, they are an icebreaker between you and God to get the ball rolling for your conversation throughout the day. You can connect with God in the busy, noisy, parts of your day if you seek him and talk to him. Thompson has drawn truth out of God's word and along with her anecdotes has given you a place to start which will only take you five minutes. And as a mom of two active boys, this book was very helpful to me in reminding me that I just need to start. My time with God doesn't have to be at a certain time or for a certain amount of time, I can take him with me into my day, add that is a helpful reminder.
This book is crafted perfectly for the modern mom. At times I felt as though she was speaking to me herself. I found myself wanting to save and highlight parts in every chapter. There is so much wisdom and beautifully quoted scripture.
Every chapter/devotion takes us through the Bible from Genesis to Hebrews and not a single story was unrelatable. I love the different prayers at the end of each devotion as well.
I plan on purchasing this book for myself to have on hand especially during those moments that we, as mothers, need God most.
Thank you to Waterbrook Press and NetGalley for my e-book copy of Truth Unchanging by Becky Thompson.
I cannot put into words what this book offers. Little excerpts as daily reminders of the love, faithfulness, grace and mightiness of God. I did my best to start my day by reading a chapter and it changed my whole day. Little snippets of daily life and mole hills that seem like mountains - and wrapping it around to how God can fulfill, provide and sustain you through it all. I have never read anything previous to this book by this author but can most definitely say this won't the the last thing I read by her. This is truly a spirit filled work.
I love how she uses an entire chapter instead just a verse or two for daily Bible reading. I'm a King James Version only user, so the multiple versions used for reference really impacts who I will recommend this to by word of mouth. I enjoy her perspective, & writing style. Very encouraging.
From the introduction of Truth Unchanging I was hooked. I found myself nodding along, as if she were speaking directly to me. Throughout the 75 (quick and easy-reading) devotionals, I felt "me too" moments along with bursts of encouragement that were almost as if she were leaning across the table at a coffee shop to extend me a sisterly hug. Likewise, I experienced hope, love, vulnerability, and much reflection as well as the feeling that I am not alone in my struggle(s) or that I am the only mom who is walking through ______. Becky does a fantastic job of being real, open and honest. She is the true definition of what it means to be authentic. She writes with a voice that is relatable and very conversational - like two sisters-in-Christ catching up on the phone while folding laundry or waiting in line during school pick-up. Additionally, each devotional includes a God-perspective that is very similar to the God-speak in Jesus Calling...I absolutely loved reading those life-giving words of Truth in each devotional! It was proof that the Holy Spirit was speaking through Becky as she physically wrote this book. Lastly, each devotional closes with a prayer that allows the message of each devotional to sink into your soul and marinate your spirit.I would recommend this book to any mother who is currently in the thick of early motherhood with littles or who has elementary-aged children as well as to any mother who is expecting her first child. While moms of all ages can relate to the book's themes or can benefit from reading this book, I'd say that the target audience is geared more towards the mom with children in elementary school or younger. If you want the ultimate mama pick-me-up that fist-bumps a big, "AMEN SISTER!" then do yourself a favor and check out Becky's Thompson's Truth Unchanging. Pre-order it now so it can deliver directly to your door when it releases next Tuesday on April 16th. It is the type of devotional that I know I will be gifting to many of my mommy friends and to those with upcoming baby showers so don't miss out! *I received this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest review
I’ve been following Becky Thompson’s blog and Facebook for a couple of years, and have read her first two books Hope Unfolding and Truth Unending (both of which are amazing!) I love that she is so real about sharing her life with other mommas—that is what first drew me in. Truth Unchanging is Becky’s latest book, and it’s a little different than her previous two in that it is a devotional. It goes chronologically through the Bible; each devotional uses a passage from the Bible where God spoke to someone, starting in Genesis with Adam. Becky uses a personal story of her own, talks about the Bible story from the passage listed at the top of each page, ties it into our lives as moms, and adds a prayer at the end. Each devotion is short (perfect for busy moms!!), but packs a spiritual punch in that the lesson is deep despite the short length of each devotional. Each one I read felt like a truth I needed to hear in the midst of daily raising my two littles. Becky’s heart for both moms and for biblical truth is evident throughout and I’m telling you, this is one of the best devotionals I’ve read. I’ve already purchased some extras for a couple momma friends because I fully believe the encouragement and just straight truth in this book is something all moms need to hear. It’s so easy for us as moms to listen to all of the negativity and fear and think “am I doing this right,” “am I going to ruin my child,” “I’m failing at being a mom,” etc. I’m thankful for this book and how God is already used it in my life, and I feel so confident that God will use Becky’s words to encourage and speak truth into other women’s lives as well. This book is so worth it!
" 'I just don't think I can do it, God.' I've said this more than once in my life. I said it just days before I was supposed to give birth (to each of my children). I've said it when God called me to start new ventures. I said it daily as our big move across the country got closer. And yet, the Lord accomplished everything that He began in me. It didn't matter whether or not I thought I could do it. What mattered is His continual faithfulness. God doesn't call us to anything that He doesn't have full provision to accomplish in our lives."
How many times have we all felt that way as moms? This is just one time of many that I connected on a personal level to Becky Thompson's newest book, "Truth Unchanging". As a busy mom, I found this to be the perfect book for me. The book is broken into 3 page devotionals that could be read quickly during any short breaks that I had throughout the day. Each devotion contained a personal story that I could relate to, a connection to scripture, and a heartfelt prayer. The cover of the book is beautiful and inviting, and the content of the book is a valuable treasure waiting to be unwrapped by any mama who is looking for encouragement and time with the Lord during often overwhelming days.
I was truly sorry to see the book end, and I will definitely be reading Becky Thompson's other two books in the near future!
I received an advanced reader's copy of this book in return for my honest review. All opinions are my own.
You always hear that motherhood is the greatest thing you will ever do. What no one tells you is that is will also be one of the hardest things you will do. There are the late nights, the anxieties and the noise. All. The. Noise. You get it from everywhere - from people on the street, from social media, from family and friends, from our kids and even from ourselves. Through all this noise, it is incredibly hard to figure out what the truth is and even harder to hold on to it, not to mention believe it day in and day out. If we can’t figure out what the truth is, then how are we supposed to listen and believe God’s truth?!
Truth Unchanging is absolutely life changing. Becky Thompson helped to fill a void in the world of motherhood but listening to God and speaking LIFE into moms everywhere. In a simple yet fulfilling devotion-style format, Becky Thompson attacks some of the biggest reasons for noise we face in motherhood, and in every day life. She shows us with examples from the bible what God holds to be true and what we need to believe is true. She ends each section with a short yet powerful prayer to help the reader engage in daily conversation with God.
Truth Unchanging is a must read for all moms, whether you have a newborn or school age kids. Being a mom is noisy and we need to be able to hear God and listen to his truth for our lives. I absolutely recommend this book!
As a mom, I know how busy the days can be. There is laundry to be done, dishes to be washed, and children to be taught. It can be hard to find time to be in the Word. In Truth Unchanging by Becky Thompson, there are short devotionals that can be read in a short time. Each of these devotions contain a story, prayer, and biblical truth to encourage us moms throughout our day.
My favorite devotion in the book is titled, “I am”. This is where God speaks to Moses from the burning bush. In this particular devotion, Becky talks about the times when we are not sure that God really called us to something. She talks about how Moses did not feel equipped for what God was calling him to do with leading the Israelites out of Egypt. Becky points out, “The freedom that Moses would bring to the Israelites wasn’t proof of Mose’s abilities. It was proof of God’s faithfulness.” She ties this to motherhood by talking about the children that God gave us.
Each of these devotions are sure to be uplifting and encouraging to those who are in the midst of motherhood. This would be a great gift with Mother’s Day just around the corner!
I’ve been a Christian since 6 years old, grew up going to church every Sunday & Wednesday evening along with Bible studies, read the Bible several times, I’m now a pastor’s wife/worship leader/mother of 4 and STILL there are things God reveals to my heart about His Truth as I read the Bible. I love how He does that; it never gets old!! The way Becky wrote this book, reading each devotional is like studying the Bible with a friend. The kind of friend who loves God and desires His Word to be deep in her heart and reflected in her life. The kind that encourages you in the middle of your mess & crazy schedule and helps you get through it because that’s what God leads her to do. I love Becky’s Spirit-led insights– they’re like a power bar for your soul! And this book has no shortage of them. Quick and easily relatable reading that gets you thinking on what God has said to you in His Word. I believe in what God is doing through Becky and this book so much that I’ve bought 3 already- one for myself and 2 for other girls I think would really love it!
Author Becky Thompson continues in her true to life fashion in her latest devotional, Truth Unchanging. Similar to her previous work, Thompson's voice is conversational, concise, and impactful. Each excerpt is meant to be read in short time spans, but the truth is still deep without being "fluff and stuff." What I mean is, the author really hits on Biblical principles that stand the test of time and work to develop true character.
This devotional takes you through the expanse of both Old and New Testaments, relating Biblical stories to deep life truths, and then attaching them to the significance of motherhood. Proving once again that the Lord's truths are certainly unchanging across the test of time. I have yet to finish this devotional, but am savoring my reading in it. Ideal for reading along side the Bible, Truth Unchanging serves as a great encouragement and inspiration in the pockets of time during the season of motherhood.
*Disclaimer: I received this book free from the publisher. All opinions are my own.
Thompson’s writing style is very approachable and enjoyable to read. I really like how she went through the Bible from Genesis through the New Testament to emphasize eternal truths that touch us today. The short devotionals are the perfect length and provide a nugget of truth to ponder through the day. It didn’t always feel like the personal stories (and occasionally the Bible stories) she included truly expressed the point that she was making, but the points still came through and were overall Biblically sound. Anything I felt wasn’t truly correct theology was small and I don’t believe would cause a spiritual life problem. My favourite part was the prayers at the end of each devotional, they really hit the heart of each topic and how to turn to God with it. The issue I struggled the most with was that the scripture references weren’t mentioned at location but in the back of the book and I don’t know what the primary translation was, so don’t know how reliable it is. But overall, I truly did enjoy this devotional.
I have read Becky Thompson's other books and to me, this was my least favorite. I like that she went through the Bible and focused on passages where God spoke to his people. I also appreciated that each devotion was short and sweet since I am a stay-at-home-mom and don't have a lot of time to read something really long. However, I wished she had at least one or two questions at the end of each chapter for you to ponder. Instead, each section ends with a printed prayer. I guess the point is that you don't have to sit and formulate your own prayer-which takes more time-but I am never a big fan of reading prayers by other people. It doesn't seem genuine to me. If you are a mom in need of a short devotional, this is a good option. If you are looking for something that helps you self-analyze a little more, I would suggest Becky's first book "Hope Unfolding."
*I received a copy of this book as part of book launch team. This is my honest review.*
What a sweet little devotional! I've followed along with Becky Thompson ever since her viral blogs on her old site, Scissortail Silk, yearsss ago. It's always exciting to see a new or recent release come out, especially so when I get the chance to review it thanks to Netgalley. Unfortunately I waited a bit too long to write this out but here goes. Devotionals are perfect for moms because you can read each chapter in just a few minutes, and it's perfect for on the go, especially in its little package. Loved that this was a hardcover book. Even though it's on the shorter side in terms of length, every word is packed and really gets to the meat of things. I think in her writing she has always done a great job of applying everyday things of life to devotional style takeaways as well as relating all things back to Scripture. Definitely recommend her books to any new or seasoned mama who needs some refreshment.
One of my very favorite things about Becky Thompson's writing is that they hold so much truth, grace, hope, and love. Every thing that she writes is so beautifully done in such a way that leaves the reader feeling grounded in the truth that Scripture holds. This 75 day devotional is no different, God has given Becky such a gift in the way that He shows His word to her and she is able to unpack it in a relatable way that encourages and holds the truths of the Bible. I love that the devotions are not numbered and there is no feeling of pressure to "just get through the devotional for today" to stay on track. Each devotion causes you to ponder what God is saying to you and gives you the desire to dig deeper into each passage. I highly recommend this devotion along with the rest of Becky's other books, you won't be disappointed!
Great Devotion Book for Us Mommas!! Becky Thompson’s Book, Truth Unchanging has been the refreshing that I’ve needed! As you read through the 75 devotions, it’s as if she’s talking straight to you! So many times, as I read, I felt like she had been watching my life and was living some of the same struggles that I’ve faced! Each devotion gives connection with God, but is also short enough that I can read it to start my day, even with littles all around! We need to hear God daily in Motherhood and offer we get caught up in all our tasks that we don’t take that time. This is the perfect devotional to get that time started back! Plus, also makes a perfect gift for a friend! I received an Advanced Reader Copy in exchange for my honest review.
This book is beautiful, both in appearance and content! Becky Thompson is one of my favorite moms/writers to follow on social media because she is so relatable and encouraging, and this devotional book is both of those things as well. It's full of quick, easy to read devotions that are perfect for busy moms, yet still full of wisdom and truth. They aren't something that require you to go really deep into a subject, or an in-depth Bible study, but they're great for when you need a quick reminder of the truth and love that God has for your life. It's sometimes hard as a mom to have any quiet time by yourself to spend with God, so this devotional is perfect for the days when you just can't make it happen, but you still need something to help you focus on him.
I love this devotional! Motherhood at any stage is hard, and it’s often hard to find quiet time for ourselves in the midst of the chaos. Even as the mom of a teen, I find myself much more focused on him than me. This book is the perfect way to ensure I spend some time alone with Gold each day! I love the writing, the length of the devotionals (long enough to provide some things to think about, but short enough that I have time no matter how crazy my schedule is), and that they’re connected so it’s a journey rather than an unrelated subject each day. I think any mom will enjoy it, and it’s a perfect gift for Mother’s Day!
Thank you Net Galley for the opportunity to review this book for my honest opinion. I've read Becky Thompson's previous books so I couldn't wait to read this book. As usual she has a great message for moms that centers around Jesus's love for us. She takes most of the more popular Bible stories and adds her daily life/perspective stories to help moms see the relevance of the Bible and Jesus to their personal lives. It's a good premise but gets a bit wordy and tiresome at certain points. It is a good book of you're struggling in your faith, to point you back to Jesus and it's in bite sized chunks so you can read it like a devotional. Overall I liked it.
