Graeme Rowland Base is a British-Australian author and artist of picture books. He is perhaps best known for his second book, Animalia published in 1986, and third book The Eleventh Hour which was released in 1989.
A departure from Graeme's more fantastical picture books, being firmly grounded in a Suburban backyard. Mind you this backyard is large enough to hold a rabbit hutch and a pond, which is larger than any backyard I've ever lived with. Superbly drawn still, and still with the puzzles and intrigue. Loved it as much as any of his works. In this book a sock falls from the line. Our intrepid trios (both of them) rescue it. Or do they??
The first BumbleBunnies was such a hit with the smallest member of the household that I immediately bought this second book when I saw it on bookstore shelves.
I'm a big fan of this author/illustrator: I started collecting his picture books well before I had an audience to read them to. With Book 2 of the BumbleBunnies series, the art is of course very pretty, with our heroes so fluffy, and our protagonists Wuffle, Lou and Billington awkwardly-proportioned child-inserts. This is a cute, low-stakes book about a situation that a small person may get into.
I asked the smallest member of the household what they liked best about this book, and they said they liked the bunnies' secret smiles. Remembering the premise of the first book, our audience kept an eye out for the bunnies, and pointed out objects for the BumbleBunnies on the splash page.
