Risking It All

Rate this book
Jaden King was raised in Boston to a wealthy family that taught him what love and hard work is. He has a challenging and rewarding career until everything was turned upside down. What was once a promising future has quickly become a frightening and unknown reality. After months of dealing with the fall out on his own, he decided getting away--or more realistically, running away--to White Acre and his best friend sounded like the perfect plan.

Danny Keegan is a laid-back man with simple tastes and an even simpler life. He adores the little town of White Acre where he grew up, he loves his parents, and he enjoys his uncomplicated life. He’s always told himself the fact that he’s a closeted gay man in a conservative, parochial town wasn’t an issue and coming out of the closet wasn’t necessary. But with the addition of Jaden in his life he realizes as happy as he is, he could be happier and the future of a love of his own doesn't seem so out of grasp as it always had.

When Jaden and Danny meet, their chemistry is undeniable but playful flirting doesn't mean anything. They start spending all their free time together, and what started as a simple friendship quickly turns into something much more than either saw coming. But, Jaden carries a secret that could end it all before it even begins. And though Jaden is scared to tell the truth and risk everything that has come to mean so much to him, he knows that he can’t go on without laying himself bare, leaving Danny with an important, life changing choice to make. His content little life or what could be the love of his life.

Will Jaden’s truth be too much for Danny, or will Danny decide a life out in the open, full of love, laughter, and passion is worth risking it all?

That's a two for two in this series by Morningstar Ashley for me.

I loved Jaden and Danny so much and again, while this story had a serious subject at its heart, like book one, Morningstar treats it with such a light hand that it never drags the narrative down.

The romance is as beautiful as the cover and we get to catch up with Bennett and Mac from book one and see their HEA is firmly on course still.

I'm not sure where the series is going next but I can't wait to find out.

#ARC kindly received from the author in return for an honest and unbiased review.

I've read all of this author's works and I have to say, without question, this is her best. This is book two in her Begin Again Series and I implore you to read book one first, it's important. I felt the connection far better having read A Different Light.

In this book we are following Jaden and Danny's story. So, let's talk about this book a second. It's always been my belief that if a story doesn't keep you interested after chapter 4 you're going to have a hard time sticking with it. Well, this one had me at chapter one. I was so beyond enthralled with these characters after just one chapter.

Balance. This is another thing I look for. I don't like being depressed the whole time, laughing the whole time, and so on. I want to experience every emotion at the right time and Morningstar Ashley did just that.

Plot and story structure flowed beautifully. There was a serious topic in this book that the author handled wonderfully. She clearly researched and took great care in the sensitivity of said topic (sorry, no spoilers) I have seen many people take on hard issues and gone about it all wrong, but not here. It was amazingly done.

You will laugh, cry, and truly feel reading this book. I highly recommend this story.

I loved both of these characters in the first book and a story about them together...that's not only the icing on the cake that's like having a double scoop of my favorite ice cream thrown on top!!!! 😍😍😍

This was a really good second installment in this series. Kind of like the opposite of Mac and Bennett's story in that Danny and Jaden have a connection right away and are immediate friends and fall in love quickly.

There were typos here and there that were sometimes distracting - but not too bad overall - and it was a pretty slow start for me - I kept getting distracted and ended up reading Sterek fic instead sometimes and coming back to this hours later. Not that it was bad, but it took awhile for things to really start to pick up between Danny and Jaden and for my attention to be caught enough to keep reading a lot at a time.

But once these two fell more in love and things started to get told - - then this story started to pick up and I really, really enjoyed it.

I felt so bad for Jaden and what happened to him, and I wanted Danny or someone to track down that fucking asshole and punch right in his fucking face.

I do think there should have been a little more with trust issues with Jaden - like I know Danny is such a good guy and he would never do what Jaden's ex did, but when your trust has been broken like that, your feelings aren't always rational - but he trusted Danny so easily and never had a doubt. I felt it would have been more realistic if he had, just once or twice. Especially with just how horribly Jaden's trust was broken before with his ex and just what he did with it.

I also felt the ending was a tad abrupt, but it was sweet and adorable and these two are just so adorable together, so I didn't mind so much. There was just a feeling that the story was going along, starting to wrap up, and then the final line happened and it was done, on to the epilogue and it was like "woah, okay, it's stopping there?"

Overall a good book, I'm very much enjoying this series. Hope the next book is about Andrew and Reed, there was a spark of something there when we saw them together in the book.

I do recommend this is you enjoyed the first book :D

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. This was my first book by Morningstar Ashley, and I was excited to finally read one of her books. And I was not disappointed. It was funny, sad, a whole lot of sexy, and heartbreaking. So yes, a very good read.
I have to be honest, though, that I didn’t fall for it immediately. The first few chapters were rather fast-paced, and I felt like watching a table tennis game. It might also have something to do with the fact that I didn’t read the first book in the series, so it took me a while to catch up with all the characters. But after that, it slowed down a bit, and it became a very captivating story to me.
Jaden and Danny are lovely characters with multiple layers. When they are with each other, they certainly are different than being with others. This is so recognizable. I could picture them so perfectly in my mind. Danny, the big teddy bear, gruff-looking but oh-so huggable. And Jaden oozed trouble, but in a sparkling, shining way. They are each other’s opposite, in almost every way, but that doesn’t matter when there is that immediate connection and they are willing to risk it all to be with each other. And they have a lot to risk. They both have their secrets, and not of the insignificant kind. This author approached these issues with knowledge, care, and sensitivity. Not only the facts but first and foremost the emotions that come with revealing what you have been hiding for a long time. It was heartbreaking but also so uplifting and positive that even when I had teary eyes, it also made me smile.
This is the second book in the Be Again series and can be read as a stand-alone. However, as there are recurring characters, you might enjoy it more if you’ve read the previous book first.

I loved the first book in this series. In fact, I requested Morningstar Ashley write a sequel in my review.

I liked this book. Danny and Jaden’s story is a good. I didn’t love it as much as Bennett and Mac, but it was nice to see them again in White Acre. My biggest complaint was that this book had a lot of inner monologue. At first it was interspersed with the action so it wasn’t intrusive. However, in the middle it became too much. Morningstar is a good story teller and I certainly enjoyed the book in spite of this.

Home is Where the Heart is!

I love the dichotomy between somewhat flamboyant, extrovert Jaden and quiet, introverted but good-nature Danny. I also love their chemistry and the premise of overcoming obstacles and finding love. I read the first book in this series, so like liked the friends couple Bennett & Mac.

I'm going to just jump right in and say though Danny and Jaden didn't quite burrow into my heart as deeply as Mac & Bennet from A Different Light, they definitely gave the first couple a run for their money. I just wanted to wrap both men up in a bubblewrap until I could make them see that as difficult as life can be they are safe to be who they are. As I am not a gay man I can't say I understand their fears, especially Danny but I can sympathize with him about being himself in a community that is less diverse than the big city and his fears of rejection from his family. Sometimes as it is with so many things in life it all comes down to a matter of timing. When he meets Jaden the time might be right to be true to himself, but whether he does and/or what the "fallout" may be is something you'll have to find out for yourself. Trust me, you will definitely want to find out.

That's not to say Risking it All is all about Danny's fears, Jaden has healing and discovery to do too, after all its part of why he ran to White Acre. But I won't touch on his part of the story either because its just something I really feel that you have to experience for yourself to truly appreciate the character's journey.

A Different Light was my first read by Morningstar Ashley and as much as I loved it and had made an internal pact to read more of her work, I'm afraid time just was not on my side so Risking it All is just my second foray into her list but I can definitely say it won't be my last. Character driven dramatic romances are not for everyone, some need more spice in their gravy to go with their meat and potatoes and hey, I love a well seasoned gravy but I don't have to have the added ingredients of murder, espionage, failing businesses, etc to make the story pop. Risking is a prime example of an incredibly well written story of friendship, romance, becoming who you're meant to be, and finding your place that hooked me in from the first page.

If you are wondering whether you need to read A Different Light first, I'd say yes. Is it necessary? Probably not. I laughed, I cried, I wanted to bang heads together, and I wanted to wrap them in huge bear hugs all at the same time but it was the friendships between Danny and Jaden and Bennett and Mac that held it all together. I know personally I felt it all just meshed together better and more naturally having known Mac and Bennett's journey from the first book. Not sure where or if the author is going next with Begin Again series but I loved it and will be right here eager to read more. Definitely a win-win from beginning to end.

Wow! Risking It All by Morningstar Ashley is a stunning and exquisite romance!

In the beginning, Danny and Jaden butt heads. Danny's a small town guy, who's extremely closeted due to his family's beliefs. And Jaden, well, he's definitely a city guy who doesn't quite fit into this small town. The fun starts when these two men who have nothing in common start to just click. They bond over video games and realize they had each made wrong assumptions of the other. With each other they are able to let down their walls and create something special.

Danny struggles throughout with his shame and fear of being gay. He knows his family won't understand and he's afraid of losing them. He's always dreamt of having his own family, with a husband and kids, but certainly doesn't think it will ever happen.

Jaden meanwhile, struggles with his secret. He can't have a relationship without telling his partner his truth, but it's difficult to talk about. He's also hesitant to be with a closeted guy.

One of my favorite scenes is when Danny traces Jaden's freckles. It is just so emotional and touching. Love it! Another is Jaden's single, lone tear. That scene is as emotionally charged as could be, and it's tender and heart-breaking.

The sexual tension between them is off the charts. The connection is strong, the want is even stronger. And, damn, but this part is so well written!! I also adore that Jaden wants to let Danny be in control. It's just adds so perfectly to the story.

One of my favorite scenes is when Danny traces Jaden's freckles. It is just so emotional and touching. Love it!

And the endearment that is spectacular? Danny calls Jaden "trouble." I couldn't love this more than I do. It is said with such love, affection, and tenderness.

This book is written with heart, knowledge and understanding. The topics covered are well researched and exceptionally developed. It is a story full of passion, secrets and complications. And love. Life changing love.

Overall, Risking It All is a touching love story, with a super strong connection. Morningstar Ashley has also created a fun and charming small town world that I'd love to visit. I absolutely love this book and can't wait to read more.

Risking it All || Morningstar Ashley (begin Again Book 2)

Danny and Jaden

Loved the second edition in this series, Danny and Jaden have such a gorgeous relationship.

Danny, from small town White Acre, has been living in the closet his whole life and when Danny comes into town to stay with Bennett and Mac he starts to have feelings for him and questions keeping his sexuality hidden.

Jaden has recently been dumped, only to then find out from his ex’s husband that he was married the whole relationship and that he was HIV positive. Jaden immediately is tested and is positive. He has spent months coming to terms with it but even though him and Danny are getting closer, he doesn’t want to tell him, he doesn’t want to deal with being rejected for it.

But as they get closer and finally share a passionate kiss and then many more kisses and touches over the following weeks, things get more heated and Jaden stops Danny and tells him he can’t and runs away (classic move haha). When he finally tells Danny, Danny asks for some time to process (which Jared thinks is a rejection) and he goes to the doctor to get tested and get information and go on prep and is so thoughtful with the whole thing.

“What Danny did know was there was no way he was going to be completely passive in their first kiss. Not after Jaden had taken the bull by the horns or, in this case, the bear by the ears.”

Really loved this story, such great chemistry, banter, open conversations and some sweet spice!

This is actually a 3.5 star book but I'm giving Ashley the benefit of the doubt. This is the second book of hers that I've read and I liked it enough that I'll read a third novel of hers.

What did I like? I liked the story line. This is a gay romance novel but the subject matter is a little more serious than the normal romance novel. I appreciated that. People's lives are not always easy and outside forces change our lives whether we want them to our not. That was well reflected in this book. I also thought the two main characters, Jaden and Danny, were well-written and personable. I wanted their lives to work out. I wanted them to be happy.

What didn't I like? The writing seemed rushed to me. Some of the scenes didn't feel as well developed as they should have been. There were times that I wanted more description of what people were doing or where they were at. There were also a few times when the word him was used and it wasn't clear to me whether it was Danny or Jaden that was the him in that situation. I had to stop and reread a few sentences in order to get it clear. That ruins the flow.

Overall the story and the characters more than make up for the rushed feeling of the writing. I would recommend it for those who like gay romance novels that have a story line that is a little more edgy.

We first met Danny and Jaden in A Different Light, book 1 in this series so I was eagerly waiting for their story.
I loved the development of their relationship, the attraction was there from the beginning, but each has their own reasons for not diving straight into a relationship. They have a common interest that sparks up a friendship that has them spending a lot of time together and they become closer and stronger feelings creep in.
I won’t go into details because I don’t want to spoil it but will say that the subject matter of Jayden’s story is dealt with perfectly, you can tell the author has done the research.
It’s emotional, heartbreaking at times but there’s lots of fun and Mac and Bennett, from bk1, are great secondary characters.
If you enjoyed bk1 then you’ll love Jaden and Danny story, I did.

I really liked Danny and Jaden’s story. I felt the connection between them immediately and they made sense together even if they are an ‘odd’ couple. There are sensitive issues that are dealt with with care and are just really well done in my opinion. I just really really love Danny and am so happy to see him get his HEA!

Well done!

A truly beautiful story of love and hope. Of an attraction turning friends to lovers but also a heartbreaking tale of betrayal and fear of coming out, fear of rejection. Danny and Jaden were wonderful together. The plot flowed, was well written and the characters were great.

This story felt more forced. The back and forth between Jaden and Danny didn’t feel as good as Mac and Bennett story.
