The Convicts

Rate this book
New Orleans – 1815
Bart Croxen never thought he would see his son again, especially not in Louisiana. Andrew Jackson has finally lifted marshal law over the port city after the Battle of New Orleans and everyone is eager to praise and honor the valiant war heroes who defended them against the invading British. Creoles, Acadians, Irish, Germans, Spanish, and plenty of French citizens welcome Baratarian pirates like James and Robert into their social circles, but they are more interested in reuniting with their estranged relative. They come to find out that Bart has made a reputation for himself as a tamer of rougarous, werewolves like himself who had developed a taste for human flesh. On his plantation of sharecroppers – mostly former slaves that Bart has freed himself – he rehabilitates deranged werewolves in secret.
James has arrived just in time to see his father in action, though he still has some reserves about how the plantation and virtual prison is being operated. Although everyone assures him that Bart is generous and selfless to a fault, he is still not convinced. After an escape attempt by a particularly stubborn and dangerous rougarou, some start to think he may be onto something.

Really enjoyed this book. I havent read the whole series but a couple other books and liked those as well. I didn't feel lost because of that either so I do believe they could be read as stand alones. The world building and development is awesome. In this book Bart is helping rehabilitating loups who have gone wild. His plantation is interesting. His son, James and Grandson Robert come to visit. Bart and his son James didnt part well last they met. However, James felt forgiveness was warranted and wanted his son Robert to know his Grandfather. They have a chance to see how his plantation works. James has reservations about it. I kinda felt bad Robert seems to keep going after the wrong kind of women who hurt him in the end he loves too fast before knowing them. There is a little gal who's got a little crush on him so I have hope but hard to know what direction the author will go.

I have absolutely grown to love this series and it started with the first book. As each legacy book has been released and I got to know the characters and their backgrounds and their connections it made it more personal. In this one finding Bart and his plantation, the people he has saved and loved, earning respect and status from the community. He's used this as a way to help and heal, but his methods are called into question. Now lives are in danger, lines are crossed, suspicion and trust. The impressions left on some will last for a lifetime some good and some not. Lives will be changed and lives will be lost. This author never disappoints when it comes to intrigue and suspense. Books that can be enjoyed and read over and over with kids of all ages. Hells bells you even get accurate historical information to boot what more can you ask for. I LOVE this series and kinda fangirl the author too.

The Convicts

Not having read the entire series I still was able to enjoy this story. It was full of suspense and anticipation. I couldn’t really get into the book until the last half though but I enjoyed how it played out in the end. I enjoyed how the characters were united and we got to see some previous characters throughout.

I am loving The Legacy Series! Loups-garous are fascinating and seeing Bart reunited with his family is wonderful. I hope there's a follow up story for Diego.
