No matter how bored you are, it's up to you to make things fun.

This book is, rather ironically, not entirely boring. It's full of head-scratching moments, and the overall feeling I'm left with after reading it is exhaustion. Imagine a kid who's so bored that they just start letting random things pop out of their mouth. Now imagine that you've just fed them an energy drink and some ice cream... and you'll start to get an idea of how this book wallops the reader with its annoyingly frenetic energy.

I guess part of the point may be to show that our minds can go to weird places when we're bored, but this was just so disjointed. I swear, I don't think I've ever read anything like it. The thoughts jump around so much that it's difficult to keep hold of any particular thread, except at one point near the middle where the kid muses for many pages about whether various random objects feel boredom. (That went on for way too long.) Here's an example of what I mean, taken verbatim from the text:

Wait--what makes things boring?

Why am I bored?

What does "boring" mean, anyway?

What if I were stuffed into a big donut?

The randomness of such switches are almost enough to give the reader whiplash. (It didn't help that my e-book copy from the library didn't match up the text with the images properly. That may have been part of what happened with the donut example, but still... that's a really abrupt transition!)

Things get even weirder when the kid asks his father about boredom, and the pictures show them glaring at each other like they're having a terrible argument. The tone and content of the text doesn't match the illustrations at all, so I'm wondering if there was something lost in translation from the Japanese.

In any case, this is just a weird book. I can't say it bored me, though. It's hard to be bored when you're wondering what the heck is going on.

Is it fun when 300 bored people get together?
Or is it 300 times more boring?

An adorable investigation of boredom.

For a picture book, The Boring Book gets surprisingly philosophical about the many causes of a complete lack of interest. The accompanying illustration provides some cute and vibrant diagrams of boredom in action.

Yoshitake clearly put a lot of thought and care into composing this book, two things which are guaranteed to yield a respond from kids. It also provides a gentle introduction to irony, namely how fun it is to think of ways to be bored. Isn't that weird?

Of course this book itself is a fine example of such irony. The Boring Book is actually rather engaging, a crafty tonic for little ones getting fed up of 'nothing much to do'.

If you're a parent or guardian of such a child, I do recommend The Boring Book. Either way, that's me done for this review. How dull...

For me boredom is knowing that there are things to do and I don't wanna do any of them. Though that's also a symptom of my depression, so I have to watch out. And yet, I can still identify with this kiddo. He philosophically unpacks that odd feeling that gets labeled boredom... but in a kid-friendly picture-book. And it's not hilarious, exactly, but it is definitely amusing and I did smile while reading it.

What would *you* call that feeling in between Boredom and Having Fun? Not when you're too busy to feel anything, but when what you're feeling is not either extreme? Contentment? Is there a word in Japanese that works better? Why did the author ask this question and not give us an answer?

Seriously? This sounds like an adult talking to a kid about boredom. This child is bored and goes about examining everything he can think of about boredom... who came up with the word 'boring', was he bored, are people who look bored actually having fun, and vice-versa, what's the most boring thing in the world, what would a boring amusement park be like... Not only very adult sounding, it's also very long to read (or at least it seems that way). Maybe I don't know a good book anymore. Maybe I should ask a child if this is a good book or not.

An interesting book which explores the word "boring" and it's implication in everyday life through the eye of a child. It has adorable pictures and would make a great book to read with children.

Japanese author/illustrator Shinsuke Yoshitake delivers a delightful journey through boredom, one that seems almost like a direct flow of consciousness from bored (but highly imaginative) little mind. The artwork is simple yet highly expressive, full of primary colors and simple lines but also lots of little whimsical details. The story itself I think would be enjoyed by both by kids and adult readers, both of whom are going to find something relatable in the pages.

3.5/5

I don’t think we needed the parent to explain everything to the child at the end of the book- I think the author could have left it with the child’s musings on and eventual enjoyment of boredom, but I still think this was a nice read.

"is it fun when 300 bored people get bored together? Or is it 300 times more boring?"

"I wonder if some people look like they're having fun, but they're actually bored. Or if some people look bored, but they're actually having fun."

I love the subtle philosophical questions in this book

This book is not boring. It IS confusing, but not boring. I am not sure kids will get all of what is going on, but they will enjoy making their own story to the illustrations and the illustrations themselves.

A Playful, Clever Exploration of Boredom That Sparks Curiosity

Few picture books manage to take something as universally dreaded as boredom and turn it into an adventure of the mind—but that’s exactly what Shinsuke Yoshitake does in The Boring Book.

The story begins with a simple complaint every child (and parent) knows well: “I’m bored.” From there, Yoshitake invites readers on a funny, curious, and surprisingly philosophical journey. Instead of treating boredom as a problem to fix, the book explores what boredom really means. Why do we feel it? What happens if we stay bored? Could boredom actually be the starting point for big questions, silly ideas, or even creativity?

Yoshitake’s trademark illustrations—quirky, expressive, and full of tiny details—carry the humor and keep young readers engaged, even as the text gently encourages deeper thinking. Children will laugh at the absurd examples, while adults will appreciate the clever way the book reframes a familiar frustration.

What makes this book special is its honesty: boredom is real, but it’s also a chance to wonder, imagine, and discover. Rather than shutting the feeling down, it gives children (and grown-ups) permission to see it as a doorway.

I downloaded a bunch of picture books on Kindle for a recent family vacation, and discovered later that they all automatically synced to my Goodreads feed. This was the gem of the set - a quirky Japanese import that we read during odd moments while waiting for food or transportation. The Kindle version is impressively formatted to zoom in on small frames and text, which let us read this comfortably on my phone. Reading a book about being bored when you’re actually bored is a deeply satisfying experience. Especially when the book itself is just so offbeat and surprising in the way that cross-cultural books tend to be. I’m excited to read more by this author, and also on the hunt for more picture books that are formatted for Kindle. (Unfortunately, very inconsistent across the books I downloaded.)

Another day, another banger from Yoshitake Shinsuke! Despite the title (or rather, precisely because of it,) this was such a fun and laugh out loud book to read. I love how they're able to capture the voice of a child's valid concerns about boringness. The art was, as always, deceptively simple and lovely.

What is boring? Why am I bored? Many questions are posed by the protagonist. My favourite - are 300 boring people fun or 300 times more boring? Bright illustrations with lots going on, perhaps too much for a boring book.
