Prepared

Rate this book
She thought she was prepared for the end of the world… until it actually came.

Alex Duncan is a mother, a sister— and the daughter of a doomsday prepper. She always thought her father was insane, raving about an apocalypse she never believed in, but when a plague hits the United States and the dead no longer stay dead, Alex discovers heeding her deceased father’s advice is what will keep her family alive. Before he died, Alex’s father created a compound in Montana just in case situations like this arose.

Hell has arrived on earth.

The dead walk, hungry for human flesh. Living in a highly populated city like Las Vegas makes the reality of the plague imminent to Alex. With little time to spare, Alex must make split-second decisions to prevent her family from being devoured. Facing the end, Alex has three goals.

Escape Las Vegas. Get to the compound. Survive.

As the outside world crumbles and grows darker, Alex faces adversity from not just the infected, but the uninfected as well. Government assistance is nowhere in sight, and rumors fly that the nation’s only solution to the growing plague is execution.
Not everyone will outlast the plague. Doomsday is here. Will Alex be up to the challenge, or fall, and rise again as one of the undead?

As a child, Courtney always had aspirations of being a writer. She participated in journalism in school. At home, she wrote short stories, poetry and filled diary pages. Somewhere along the line becoming an adult took priority over her writing and she went to work in business operations.

Now as a mother to three beautiful children, she tells them all the time to follow their dreams, be whatever they want. Those lessons reminded her how much she loved writing. She finally opened the door to making writing a real priority in her life.

Living outside of Portland, Oregon she loves the green and beauty Oregon offers. When she’s not matching wits with her children, her crazy Siberian Husky or her bi-polar cats, she enjoys binge reading, hikes and touring wineries. Courtney and her husband, the love of her life, enjoy traveling the world whenever they can get a free moment. And cruises….she loves cruising. She’s especially fond of life, laughter and sarcasm – and she’s excited to share all of that and more with her readers!

Whenever I hit a bookfunk, this genre is the only one that seems to pull me over them. It also doesn't hurt that I've been binge watching 'The walking dead' so of course it seemed fitting that I'd gravitate towards a zombie book. This had been recommended to me a few times so I took that plunge and oneclicked..

This had all those heart racing moments I tend to crave, the terror, the fear, the surviving, the scavenging, the need to protect the ones you love.

Not going to lie, this did take a time for me to get into, I think it was the actual writing style of the book, short sentences which didn't flow freely onto the next. But I hunkered down on my trusty reading couch and once I got used to the writing style and storyline I raced through the chapters as though my life depended on it.

Alex and her siblings were raised by a doomsday prepper who prepared them for the end of the world apocalypse. Alex thought she was prepared as she could be, by stockpiling non perishable long life pantry items as she was taught to do, but nothing prepared her for becoming the sole carer for her children and the fear of keeping them alive especially when the dead don't stay dead and one bite is all it takes for you to end up as one of the walking dead.

Her only task is to get them out of Las Vegas unscathed and to her deceased father's compound where she'll meet up with her two siblings.

This book has a lot of problems, but I still managed to listen to the entire thing, which makes it worth at least two stars.

My biggest qualm was with the repetition of character names. This author seriously LOVES the names she came up with. It was a problem the entire time, but it really got bad when the cast was reduced to just two characters. You know how you can say a word so many times that it eventually loses meaning? I’m wayyyyyy beyond that point now. I seriously hate the kid’s name. I never want to hear it again.

There were laughable word choices. There was pointless repetition. Every character had the same values, which made them all seem like the same person. Oh, pardon me- I forgot about the mustache twirling villains. They valued being the bad guys. Seriously, there was no subtlety or depth to be found anywhere in this book.

And yet… I actually liked it to an extent. The attached novella that Audible provided at the end was garbage, but the main story was decently plotted, even though there’s some highly implausible moments.

There isn't much to zombie apocalypse books.
They are filled to overflowing with tropes. Often the most interesting thing about them are the tropes that don't show up.
So when I bought this book I knew exactly what I was getting. I've read it a dozen times before.

But...

Setting aside that the plot of most zombie books is identical there are some good ones and others that are not so good. And that's the thing. You're writing a book that's been written before so you'd better make sure you do a great job.

I liked this book enough that I will read the next one but I don't think it's as good as The World Dies by Rhiannon Frater (honestly, that's the series against which I measure all others) or Until the End of the World by Sarah Lyons Fleming.

I also read Alone which is a novella that was included with Prepared. That was great. It was better than the book. I would rate that 4 Stars.

She's not like the other girls (her words not mine), she's a prepper, well, sort of, kind of. Her dad definitely was and he was crazy (her words not mine) and she's got hoarder tendencies and she has a gun, that passes from prepping, I guess? Yeah, in the end she does exactly what most of the non-prepper would do in the circumstances and she doesn't appear to have any particular survival skills that random teens don't also appear to have so I'm not sure how she's not the like the other girls, I guess it's because she wears jeans instead of pretty dresses?

Spoilers ahead. At some point Alex (our Not like the other girls ™) They got really annoying with that stuff and honestly I wish the author had just given an obvious negative trait to the guy instead.

The redshirting is incredibly obvious, and the plot armor is THICK, if you don't like pulled punches this one isn't going to be for you.

**3.5** There was nothing new or groundbreaking in this story, if you’ve read one, you know how they go.

A huge peeve I have with most books of this genre is the MC’s never seem to know anything about zombies. HOW IS THAT EVEN POSSIBLE? Everyone knows how to survive a zombie apocalypse, go for the head, don’t chop off an arm and think you’re safe!

This was NON STOP action. Lots of gore, and not enough places to shower it all off. I did enjoy the premise of a mother with two young children fighting her way from Nevada to Montana. It was a refreshing change from the usual characters.

It read like a cheesy made-for-tv-movie and I was fine with that. Zero romance.

I did not like the book initially. It took me a few chapters to get used to how the author expressed things. I almost quit. But once I got used to the style, I had a tough time putting the book down. I enjoy zombie apocalypse stories where the main character thinks and plans about what to do. And this is definitely that. I will be continuing on to the other books in the series.

Alex grew up in a prepper household with a paranoid father, and the lessons he taught her will prove to be vital when the zombie apocalypse arrives on her doorstep. Her husband Blake returns home from a business trip, bitten and infected, unaware that he will soon turn and try to attack Alex, their kids and their housekeeper. Alex knows her family compound is the only safe place to go but first she has to gather supplies and then try to find a way out of the city which is being guarded by military checkpoints.

My first random thought on lifting this book from the zombie bookshelf is why is there a bit of nuclear war art in the form of a mushroom cloud on the cover, when the disaster in the book is a viral thing causing a zombie apocalypse?

Alex irritates me because she is that typical female character who is slow to react to what is going on. She watches her husband eat the housekeeper and sees the woman rise up with shocking injuries yet she still insists on trying to talk to them rather than get on with the fact that there is a zombie apocalypse happening. It seems to take forever for her to actually deal with the zombies in her house, which is bizarre when she has two children to protect. And this was after her sister told her about the zombie like attacks on the news. She is supposed to be keeping quiet so the zombies outside won't be attracted to the house so she plays DVDs and sings with the kids to pass the time! Alex finally starts to get organised by raiding houses nearby for supplies and finding a suitable vehicle but ruins it by not planning several routes out of the city. Instead she drives to the freeway entrances which are blocked, something her prepper father would have got annoyed about if he was there. She should've been looking at secondary roads in advance instead of wasting fuel driving about aimlessly!

Alex then decides to stop in a car park to get out and kill zombies to try and save a few strangers, putting her children in more danger instead of just getting out of the built up area of the city. She then parks for a few days and decides for some strange reason to take the kids out for a walk as they are getting bored and of course they get chased by a zombie. She really is not thinking at all! It gets worse when she decides to give some of her supplies to a group of strangers who ask her for food, and then she gets upset when they take a chance to rob her and flee when Alex is fending off a zombie attack. I really wish she would stop doing stupid crap and risking her own death, which would leave her kids unprotected! I'm not sure about Marcus though-he is too smug and annoying when they first meet and I'm surprised that she allowed him anywhere near her family with his attitude.

Another thing that bugs me is when we see the flashback to the day that Alex is taken miles away from home by her father and left in the middle of nowhere to see if she has learned his lessons and can find her way home. It was an interesting enough story but I found it weird that it was shoved between events at the climax of the book as it had the effect of bringing the story to a screeching halt and slowing everything down. It would have been better in the middle of the story rather than near the end.

From what I've said about the book, it might sound as if I hated it. Actually it was a decent read. Other than the flaws I mentioned, Alex was at least capable of looking after her family, compared to the whinging dumb females that are so often seen in the apocalypse genre. I liked that she was coming up with the plans to solve the problems instead of waiting around crying for a kind man to do it for her. I liked her interaction with her adopted children who she has taken responsibility for, and the way they learn on the journey. The action scenes with the zombies and the bad people are well written and interesting, and I also liked some of the characters that Alex comes into contact with along the way, especially Margaret.

I've seen that the second book in the series is about her sister Max and the journey that she undertakes to get to the family compound and the third book follows her brother Rafe. I'm interested in what happens to these characters so I am likely to read on with the series when time and money allows.

Alex and her two children race to her father's old compound during the zombie apocalypse.

Yes, it's the zombie apocalypse! It's a good thing that Alex was raised by a doomer-prep dad that fortified his big house, put in years of supplies and food, taught her how to shoot by the time she was two… well, okay, maybe not two. But basically Alex has never forgotten all the lessons her clearly-batshit-crazy dad taught her, and she still hordes food and has her own stash of weapons and of course the famous "bug out" bags ready and packed to go.

So when her husband comes home from a business trip and eats their nanny, well, she does what a gal has to do. Bye-bye husband, snags the neighbour's RV, and heads out to Pop's old place. Along the way she comes across a couple more teens, meets some nice people and some who are not so nice, and kills a lot of zombies.

I enjoy reading about a strong, resourceful heroine. I do not enjoy quite so much the type of setup where the heroine is superwoman. Alex is just too capable, and I really don't know of anyone who speaks the way that she does, either. She also completely breaks character toward the end of the book simply so that the writer can set up a chase and put the teens in danger. I find it so frustrating when characters act "out of character" because the plot demands it. And also, Alex, why are you flirting with some dude when the supposed love of your life died like 10 days ago??

This is the first of, I believe, 3 or 4 novels. In fact, the last chapter of this book suddenly veers into Alex's sister's point of view in an attempt to entice readers to buy the second novel. Ugh.

Enjoyed It

I really found myself quickly drawn into this story and the characters became important to me. Maybe being a mom, I identified with the main character Alex . Getting her children and her new added family to safety drove her decisions. The characters were extremely well written and I can hardly wait for the next book and the answer to the question where is brother Rafe?

Read it in one night-I could not put it down. There are a lot of zombie books out there, but I'd rank this in the top 3 or 4. Really good, well paced, part one of a series-I cannot wait for the next one!

Greatest zombie book.

This is the best zombie book I have read in awhile. Kept me reading long into the night. Wished your next book was ready. Will be watching for it. A new story line that was very well written. You never knew what was coming next. Keep up the good work.

Plot had real promise, but sometimes the characters acted a little too high and mighty, and the grammar was HORRIBLE and really detracted from the story. “She knew she should’ve ran ...”

I'm usually not a big fan of books or movies involving zombies, so this one pleasantly surprised me!

Alex was a great MC, and I really enjoyed reading her story, and I'll look forward to seeing how the rest of the series unfolds.

If you like zombie apocalypse type stories than this is for you. As a mom, you can definitely identify with the main character and almost feel like you are in her position. The author did a goo job describing the zombies and the scary environment around them. I will continue with the series.

I just can’t get enough Zombie books and this one did not disappoint me. I stayed awake all night long because I just could not sleep until this story was finished. Alex grew up with a crazy, prepper father so when the worst happens she is more prepared than most people for the unimaginable. She must be smart and use her instincts and her training to survive.

This is the first book in a planned series so it does leave quite a few threads undone; however, the book ended at a logical point so I did not feel as though the author just got tired of writing.

I really enjoyed the strong female lead, Alex; I was mesmerized as her backstory unfolded in little bits and pieces at a time as the book progressed. If you love horrific Zombie adventure books, you will love Prepared.

This book is a prepper's dream of how to do it right. The characters are also well done.

There is some good action, but it does fall a bit short when it comes to generating a real feeling of suspense. Still, there are zombies afoot. This is not a safe world.

The ending is a perfect setup for the next book without being a cliffhanger. The loose ends are minimal and only serve to advance the story in the coming books. It's a nice touch to have an epilogue that introduces the next book.

So overall, this is a solid entry into the post-apocalyptic zombie world. Not bad for a debut. Also, Tess Irondale is excellent on the audio.

Stayed up all night to finish this one

I don't generally like books with zombies as a part of the storyline. This book was the exception. It has great characters who I came to care about, a terrific plot, and great pacing. My only disappointment---it ended to soon. Can't wait for a book 2!

Fresh take on the zompocalypse

Thoroughly enjoyed this read! So many of this genre are falling into anonymity with their sameness. I appreciated the integration of the “prepped life” into the story. Only two grammar errors stood out and were easily ignored.

Highly recommend this for all those zombie fans who are har-core moms.

Holy moly I wasn't expecting that. I loved how strong Alex becomes. Yes she might have been raised with a prepper but doesn't always mean much. I like that when all shit hits the fan she starts to make lists of what needs to get done.
She doesn't break and just does what she needs to.

Kids in the middle of the world ending and zombies everywhere I wasn't sure how that was going to work, I kept thinking but the kids, where are the kids, how are the kids!!
Bahaha but it works and I really just enjoyed this book.

We lose some great side characters but the ones that are left standing make me want to know what is going to happen next.

I really quiet enjoyed the narration too.

Had my attention by chapter 1

This is my first zombie Apocalypse book but am a huge fan of this genre's movies and TV shows. I really didn't know what I was going to be in for having never read anything from this author. The one thing that I truly loved about this book is its the 1st book that I have ever read about a female character that has children in tow during the zombie Apocalypse.

Alex is smart well prepared and the person that I want to know if this ever to happen in real life. I love the compassion that she has for all people, but when push comes to shove she will take you down in order to protect what is hers. This is probably been the most realistic version of how as on the zombie apocalypse would be discovered and lived through in the early stages. I am so excited for the rest of the books in this series.

I have to say this kind of read is not my cup of tea. I normally never read books like this but it sounded interesting when I got the email from bookhub and I decided to get it. I can actually say I thought this Buck was phenomenal. Alex was such a strong character and it showed. She did everything for her kids. Fantastic back story of how she came to be prepared. Loved how loving a mother she was to take in to strange children and fall in love with them. Also I love the mystery of Marcus. So glad they made it to the compound. Love the ending so happy everyone was back together. Curious about her other family members but really like Alex's story. Fantastic book may the others in the series.

A girls side of a zombie apocalypse!

I loved this book. It haa twp of My favorite things to read about . ZOMBIES and anything prepper apocolyptic.
I can relate with Alex only as a tomboy girl could and it made it easier with her having her children.
This book pretty much started with action right off and never stopped even in the epilogue
I totally recommend this book to ladies even guys who Love the apocolyptic zombie genre.
I will try to never spoil a book so i wont say much more and can't wait to head into the next in the series.
I'm hoping by the epilogue the next one will involve Max and Jack as well as Alex.

I'm not a big fan of zombies, but this book was quite good. An editor could have helped with some of the writing issues. I liked that the story unfolded for us as it did for the main character and also that she had a good strong sense of humanity. My main issue with part of the story is Alex remembering her dad taking her out and leaving her so she could learn how to survive. That was a little too long and rather slowed down the main story. I also like that the main character is a female that knows how to survive and is very capable.

I love zombie books and this is in the top 10 of my favorites. A strong female lead with knowledge taught to her by her prepper dad. Add a fierce mother protecting her children and you have Alex. She battles her way to her father’s compound in Montana and picks up a few survivors along the way. Some she loses and some she saves. I also love the way the author writes. I was never bored enough to skip ahead. This book is a must read for zombie lovers. Even if you aren’t, this author will change your mind.
