Things may be tranquil at the lake house, but a storm is on the horizon.
Bradley and Anna have their work cut out for them; winter is upon them, and they need to be smart if they’re to survive the winter in this dangerous new world, bereft of technology.
They work their bodies to the bone to stock up for the winter, and in the process find a little girl, having run away from her family, in hiding.
Soon, however, it becomes clear that her ‘family’ is anything but conventional, and they begin to realize they’ve made some powerful and unhinged enemies…
This one picks up where The Longest Night leaves off and continues moving at a good pace. they are always being on edge because of the known and unknown dangers that their world now contains after the EMP in the ongoing effort to survive. The relationship between Brad and Sam continues to get stronger and at times it look like it will with Anna too but she's holding back and still skidish. When Sam saves a 10 year old girl things become complicated and the story quickly intensifies and then leaves off on a huge cliffhanger.... So now I'm on to book three! I would definitely recommend this to anyone who likes survival, adventure and post-apocalyptic stories. It has been a really fun series but I would also caution that there is some graphic violence and some language including 5-6 uses of the F-bomb thorough the book. I would place it more in the High School level and up.
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
The pace is way too slow. The inner monologues are too long, and robbed the story of its interest to me. The guy has no self preservation and is very naive. It is as if he lived under a rock when it comes to humans and their behaviour in extreme situations. He isn’t able to distinguish soldiers from men in fatigues?!? He can’t put two and two together. Leaves out notes where to find the cabin?!? Gets in a car with a lady, exactly the same thing Martha told him?!? It is ridiculous. To be cautious doesn’t mean loosing ones humanity. He is a dreamer and way to trusty and has more luck than brain to have survived that long. He is scared to be on his own. He is like a puppy dog who gets beaten repeatedly and still comes around needing attention. This is reflected in the arguments he has with Anna, or in the way she leaves him repeatedly with no care what happens to him and he still pines after her, and only sees the fault in his actions and not hers. It is frustrating, tiresome and a bit nauseating to watch. I really wished he would have grown some backbone in the second book. His reasonings and conclusions are immature and world innocent.
For having his thoughts lain out in meticulous details other details concerning the plot are neglected.
The second book didn’t even have any purpose at all for me. There were no action scenes or any suspense. I have no clue why I should be reading a book about a puppy wandering around aimlessly. I am not interested in reading any further.
( Format : Audiobook ) "You never know ..." Brad's father still had not arrived at the prepper lodge he'd built and stocked throughout his life. Perhaps the epidemic had killed him. As winter approached, Brad and Anna harvest and preserve and Brad teaches Anna's son, Sammy, how to hunt and trap. And winter arrives early and with it an unforseen danger which threatens them all.
Part two of this post apocalyptic thriller could be read alone but is best taken in sequence to better understand the background. A slow action story, it has a feeling of real possibility, survivalist, which raises moral questions. And the interplay between the characters is good. Narrator Andrew B.Wahrlen is excellent, his brisk but sensitive reading propelling the book forward, holding the reader's interest with the underlying threat that something bad is going to happen despite the cabin's isolation and well stocked sulplies. He voices each character individually, the tension present between the two main protagonists evident. As always, a fine performance.
This is not a long book, quick and easy to read, though it has harrowing uundertones. I eagerly await part three. My thanks to the rights holder who, at my request, freely gifted me a complimentary copy of Dead of Winter, via Audiobook Boom.
I've really enjoyed these and I've pre-ordered book three. I really like Brad and the boy, but like everybody else, I'm kind of tired of Anna's sucky attitude, and it's a good thing that they never got past that one kiss, because the last thing they need is for her to get pregnant in the world they're living in. Whether a man and a woman in a situation like that could remain aloof from one another they way thy have is somewhat hard to believe, though. That being said, it's refreshing to find a book that doesn't have F-bombs on every page and the other material that's usually a part of stories like this.
One way or another, I really appreciate the author's work. The books are novellas that could easily be combined into one novel. They go by too fast - and I wanted to keep reading. Good books.
This one was a struggle. I wanted him to be happy but life has other plans. This causes dilemmas of a moral kind. Each way stinks but a decision is made. Now to live ....now survive with the consequences.
I love these characters but hate them as well. Annie just frustrates me. Then it’s sad to see how people are now that life has changed. I am hoping Brad get something to smile about soon
I listened to this on audio. Andrew B Wehrlen is doing amazing with this series. He is easy to listen to and has a lovely voice.
This is a pretty good book and Brad is a very good character. Anna, however, is a real problem and were it not for the kids, Brad is much better off without her as she is not very trustworthy and is a wholly unpalatable person. I'm surprised she kept Martha given her very mean-spirited reception of the poor child. This is well written and not a lot of errors which is nice. I look forward to the next book.
I’m really enjoying this series Winters coming and brad is teaching Sam survival tactics Anna seems like she’s hiding something refusing to let brad get closer to her Add a 10 year old runaway brad saves and the crazy family that want her back and you got a nice setup for book 3 Andrews narration was excellent As always his female and kid voices are spot on Highly recommended I received a free review audiobook and voluntarily left this review
Excellent continuation of the story. Brad, Anna & Sammie finally get a routine going And the budding romance gets messed up as usual for these types of books. Then the crazy people show up. What will Brad do now that he’s lost everything? Book 3 I’m ready for you! Excellent narration by Andrew B Wehrlen. I was voluntarily provided this review copy at no charge by the author, publisher and or narrator.
I really like this series. I love Brad. He’s trying so hard to do the right thing. The boy is a good character too. However, I really can’t stand Anna. She’s so annoying and I don’t understand for a second what Brad likes about her. She is not likable. She’s such a jerk to him sometimes. She’s the perfect character that the reader loves to hate.
Rated this book so highly because I couldn't wait to get to the next book. The main character trying to do what's right yet getting it thrown back in his face time and time again.
Brad is thinking he has life all figured out. He is not a strong man when it comes to fighting or figuring out the best plan. He has an expectation that people are decent and fair. Then he lets a sneaky, selfish woman stay with him and it’s all bad from there.
Loved it!I didn't want to stop reading it! Brad,Anna and danny are living a mostly calm life when a stranger brings hell to their door. Narration by Andrew B Wehrlen was the perfect narrator.I was given this book by the narrator, author or publisher free for an honest review.
Dead of Winter, Enter Darkness, Book 2, By: K. M. Fawkes is a post apocalypse story.
A short story about struggle of survival in an apocalypse. It has good characters and a good story line.
The story doesn’t end in a cliffhanger, but does leave the story to be added on to. I want to know what next.
I can’t only remember any corse Language. There are no sex scenes. Although there is some violence it doesn’t go into a lot of details. There is a cult, branding, and vandalism
Narrator Andrew B. Wehrlen does a good job, with each character having their own individual voices.

Again I like that this time the hero isn't some prepper extraordinaire. He is just an average guy, who grew up with a parent that he thoughts was bonkers. Was his father really bonkers? Only time will tell. Did Brad learn enough to survive the end of the world? Then comes the family and Martha's story. Oh dear my heart breaks for that little girl.
Second novel in a post-apocalyptic series set in the near future. Only 10% of the population is alive; EMP has disabled everything with any electrical or electronic components; society has collapsed; humanity is trying to survive as either hunters/gatherers/farmers or scavengers/opportunists. Oh, and not only do desperate people come out of the woodwork, but so do the crazies.
