Dark Sonata
They told me my life is a lie.
My name is Victoria Orpha Leslie, daughter of a grand Duke. I have lived a quiet life up until now. And now they’re telling me that I’m not from the eighteenth century but originally from the twenty-first. I have so many questions for these so-called doctors in their long white coats. I am not a test experiment, being able tell they’re not telling me the truth. My life is not a lie and I will prove it to you. I am not crazy.
I will also tell you that I am being hunted by a dark power, I can feel it all around me. A man with the Devil’s own looks. His unnatural eyes are the color of steal and his hair that of a raven’s wing. He makes me nervous in ways I can’t begin to explain. The way his eerie gaze travels over me is not right. The man cannot be sane of mind with his purple top hat and maroon suit. He wants more from me, for no one has a right to claim that I am his.
I must survive and forget that he has the most sinful lips I have ever seen.

This story starts in ‘Victorian’ England, and it is immediately obvious that the author knows nothing about Victorian England. However, the element of fantasy and the erotic was introduced and I’m not ashamed to say I was hooked! As soon as the love-interests had been introduced I immediately became happy with the ‘Victorian’ setting as it simply meant I got to imagine the costumes!
Victoria is a Cinderella of sorts who is actually the child of a powerful sorceress in hiding. Ezra is a demon who is battling for his soul before it is lost to him forever. They are both absurdly hot, but obvious she doesn’t realize that she is. Oh, and did I mention that she’s a virgin – a common troupe in erotica is the female being a virgin and it’s an element I really really really hate. Anyway, back to the story; Ezra has come to kidnap Victoria as he knows she is the key to something he wants, and the pair fall for each other even though he is bad. At one point she is sent into the future, and then the past again where the original reason for Ezra being at Victoria’s house has inexplicably completely changed, but what the heck, the whole thing was hot as hell (pun not intended).
The story felt a little limited as all of the action seemed to take place in one room – well, 3 different rooms, but they felt the same. Also, there are no real characters apart from Victoria and Ezra. There is Michael but I barely remembered him until he suddenly became important to the plot. However, I found myself devouring this book! From the interaction between the pair, to the fantasy setting, to the way that Ezra kept saying ‘love’ in the way American’s think British people speak, but reminded me of Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and so was incredibly endearing. This book was candy-reading, and I enjoyed every morsel.
Rating 7/10. Not spectacularly well-crafted, but completely moreish, which is precisely what you want in a hot tub on a chilly spring night.

This book was epic wow it was so engaging never a dull moment I loved Victoria so much and Ezra he was so bad and I loved it. I loved them as a couple I hope it has another book because I need more Victoria and Ezra

The story that developed through Dark Sonata by F. R. Black was very dark, captivating, steamy and interesting but sadly, it wasn’t my favorite. What I mainly enjoyed about this book was the way angels and demons were portrayed and how important they both were on Victoria’s life and journey. Now, what I least enjoyed about it was the romance and our main character: Victoria. I couldn’t get into the romance because I feel like it was way too rushed for my liking, and I just couldn’t get Victoria at all because she was too...naïve? And since this book is mainly a paranormal romance, that pretty much explains why I felt like DNF-ing this way too many times, but I’m glad I didn’t give in to that feeling because things got way more interesting and entertaining around the end!
F. R. Black’s writing was great! I enjoyed it so much and it helped me understand clearly—way too clearly in some parts (if you know what I mean)—everything that happened through Victoria’s journey. We also get to visit multiple settings, but since I’m not here to spoil anything, I’ll just mention the ones I loved. The first one was England, where it all began. Then, we got to visit Sydonia, which is kind of a “safe/neutral zone” for demons on Earth. And lastly, we got Lior, which is pretty much heaven. I found that they were all great settings because they were all very different from each other and so were the people we get to meet through each and one of them, and also, because we get to see how our main characters change through all of them.
Now, moving on to my least favorite part about this review, let’s talk about the characters! Through Victoria’s journey, we get to meet many powerful characters that want her either dead or alive, and we get to see how each one of them twist their threads through her story and change it. Again, I’m not here to give spoilers so I’ll just talk about a few. First, we have Victoria, also known as our protagonist and The White Witch, who I disliked throughout the whole book. I don’t know how to explain this, but I just didn’t see her “work” as a main character with so much value. She felt flat and I just couldn’t connect with her and the way she accepted everything that was put in front of her without questioning it enough. Besides Victoria, we also get to meet Lord Stone, also known as Ezra Stone, who’s looking for a way to “redeem” himself and get a complete soul while at the same time is trying to destroy his father’s demonic kingdom. Ezra was a very interesting character and even though I loved his motives for doing everything he did—and planned to do—, I didn’t enjoy him that much either because I felt like he was missing something...and because he sounded too perfect. Now, moving on, a character that I did enjoy was Michael, also known as Michael the Archangel, who was mysterious, powerful, unpredictable and very interesting because he…how should I say it? Knew things no one else did? Yes, I’ll go with that.
Besides those characters I enjoyed and disliked, we also get to meet some secondary characters like: Henrietta (Victoria’s cousin), Sonya (Victoria’s maid), Krzan (a very powerful demon lord who I still have many questions about), Cateria, Peri and many more that helped this story take twists and be bearable and enjoyable.
In the end, I believe that the story that developed through Dark Sonata was very intriguing and original. Even though I enjoyed most of it, the main characters didn’t let me enjoy it completely. F. Lordy! What an intense ride this book was!!! I must say every time I thought I knew what was going on it changed. This book has it all history, romance, supernatural beings, everything a girl could want. I can't wait to see what happens next!! If you like romance novels or historical novels or supernatural novels, then this book has it all rolled up into one. Honestly one of the best historical romances I have ever read, probably because of the supernatural edge to it. One of the best books ever. I seriously hope the next one comes out soon!!! 5 out of 5 stars from me!

One of the BEST!!!
This is my first book from this author and DAMN!!! You have Victoria who is one heck of a heroin! Strong, beautiful and not afraid to speak her mind. To anyone! Not even to Ezra. A very bad, sexy and won't take no for an answer. This book will make you laugh, cry and just spit. It's funny and heartwarming and it hasn't left me yet. You will truly enjoy this book!!!!
