4.5 rounded up to 5 stars

Here's another interesting Pride and Prejudice variation from Ms. Louise. It starts with Elizabeth touring Pemberley with the Gardiners. Instead of Elizabeth unexpectedly encountering Mr. Darcy, her uncle has an accident on a stairway inside the estate. The doctor summoned for him decrees that he can't be moved for days, and so the three stay at Pemberley.

What's humorous is Elizabeth doing her best NOT to be seen by Mr. Darcy who, of course, arrives before Mr. Gardiner is capable of traveling. Although the Bingleys don't come with him, he has invited longtime friends of his parents, the Westerfields, and their daughter Angeline. Although heartbroken that Elizabeth didn't accept his proposal, he realizes he must find someone else to marry in order to father the all-important heir. He remembers Angeline as a compatible playmate in their youth and hopes she still is--enough to him to tolerate as his wife.

It's a great set up, and Ms. Louise develops it beautifully. Elizabeth meets Georgiana and learns more about Darcy, causing her to be more and more convinced she made a mistake when she refused his proposal of marriage. She's distressed watching Miss Westerfield with Mr. Darcy. Servant and neighborhood gossip becomes an issue. Also, Mr. Wickham shows up in the area because his mother is dying. You just KNOW that's not good!

I enjoyed this a lot. Great story, and it's well written. Plenty of romance, with Darcy and Elizabeth hesitantly interacting. My only criticism is that occasionally the dialogue sounds too modern. For example, at one point Mr. Bennet says, "No worries." But that's a minor quibble. It's an entertaining read overall.

Unable to believe the story

There were to many leaps of faith that occurred in the story for me to enjoy it.

The whole Wickham scenario seemed contrived. That Wickham could be on Pemberley grounds seemed impossible. Why wasn’t he arrested for trespassing? Why was Georgiana outside with no oversite by some of the servants. Why was she wandering around Lambton or anywhere without bodyguards?

It was all so unsafe.

Why was the ultra-respected master of Pemberley a successful target of gossip?

And Lizzie hiding like a three year old from Darcy while staying at Pemberley? This from the girl whose courage always rises when intimidated? No way that was Lizzie.

And the waltz of the ‘have her feelings changed’ and ‘have his feelings changed’ went on and on and on.

Not a fun story to read, not a believable story to read. The story telling was done pretty well though.

I don’t recommend the book.

I value my garden more for being full of blackbirds than of cherries, and very frankly give them fruit for their songs. ~ Joseph Addison, 1712

Darcy, as well as his Father, had been close in spirit to the older Mr. Wickham who was talented with carving tools. As a child, Darcy learned wood carving under Mr. Wickham’s guidance. His specialty is birds – many varieties of wooden birds grace his home.

We learn that Mr. Bennet assigned each of his daughters a bird that he believed most closely resembled the girl. Elizabeth is a Magpie – one of the most intelligent of all animals, social and talkative. At the Netherfield Ball, Darcy overhears Mr. Bennet speak of his “Maggie-Pie” and begins carving that bird when he returns to Pemberley. After the disaster at Hunsford, he leaves the Magpie unfinished.

Our story opens with a visit to Pemberley – Elizabeth tours the home with her Aunt and Uncle Gardiner. Due to Elizabeth’s distraction, her uncle is injured in a fall. He must remain at Pemberley until his back heals.

I once had a sparrow alight upon my shoulder for a moment, while I was hoeing in a village garden, and I felt that I was more distinguished by that circumstance that I should have been by any epaulet I could have worn. ~ Henry David Thoreau

Elizabeth is distressed to remain at Pemberley, especially when Darcy and Georgiana return to their home. At Pemberley, she is known as Miss Gardiner rather than Miss Bennet and she attempts to remain out of Darcy’s sight.

The Westerfields, an older couple who had been friends with Darcy’s parents, are invited to visit with their daughter. Angeline and Darcy had been much in each other’s company when they were children. He thinks of her fondly and wants to re-new their friendship.

George Wickham’s mother still resides in Lambton. She is seriously ill and asks Darcy to visit her. He sends for George to attend Mrs. Wickham’s last days.

One must ask children and birds how cherries and strawberries taste. ~ Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

So, the cast for our drama is set. Darcy and Elizabeth meet. How will he compare Elizabeth and Angeline? How can he discover if Elizabeth’s feelings have changed? How will Wickham’s presence affect the story?

The basic premise – Elizabeth remaining at Pemberley – has been written before but this version has enough differences to hold my interest.

The story is clean and well-edited. I enjoyed it although it is lower angst than my very favorites. It seemed to me that Mrs. Reynold’s actions were a little out of her usual character. I really couldn’t understand her reasoning. I liked the unusual ending for Wickham.

The cover art is an original work by the author’s sister. Obviously Kara Louise is not the only talented individual in her family.

I was fortunate to win a copy of this story in a promo on the author’s web page. I accepted the book without promising a review.

A creative twist to the "encounter at Pemberley".

The Bingley's opted not to visit Pemberley as Darcy had invited the Westerfield's with the intention of getting reacquainted with their unmarried daughter. The Westerfield's were friends of his parents and had visited often when he grew up.
Mr Gardiner had a mishap during the tour of Pemberley and they were forced to remain for several days. There were some very funny moments when Elizabeth tried to avoid that her presence be known to Mr Darcy. I found the moments she watched him court another to be a little unsettling, mainly because it took him a long time to reach a decision. The little interludes with ODC, after Darcy discovered her, was absolutely lovely though.
Mr Wickham was in the area, visiting his ailing mother and he did stir up some trouble but I am happy to rapport that it was a new and inventive twist.

Loved the first half of the story; the second half not so much, when things became a little confusing and they broke some rules of propriety as if it was normal.

The reason for the title is explained early in this story: Darcy's fondness for carving birds leads to his beginning to carve a Magpie to represent Elizabeth when he overhears that she is her father's Maggie-pie due to her resemblances to that particular bird. He leaves it unfinished when she rejects his proposal at Hunsford.

The Gardiners and Elizabeth are forced to remain at Pemberley while during their tour of such the uncle falls down some steps as he trips over Elizabeth who turns to gaze back at Darcy's portrait. Elizabeth does all within her powers and even has her relatives calling her "Miss Gardiner" in an attempt to avoid having Darcy know she is in residence. There is come comic relief here as she hides. Darcy has returned home; Elizabeth does meet and befriend Georgiana but she also becomes aware that other visitors are there due to Darcy's intention to finally take a bride. She watches from a window as they take walks together, etc.

But, of course, he does finally learn that she is there and their interaction has two outcomes. One is that the Westerfields leave and Elizabeth is not sure exactly why but suspects they know of one or more of her interactions with Darcy. The other is that gossip begins and this brings action by Mrs. Reynolds who, you must know, is always protective of the family's reputation.

A sideline in this story is that Wickham's mother is dying. The lady lives with her daughter nearby and Darcy has written to Wickham urging him to visit her. However his presence does also tie in with the gossip going around the vicinity.

The second half of this story deals a great deal with just that - gossip. Who started it? Their intentions? And whether or not it is true? I was not as drawn into this part of the story as I was by the first part of the book. But it does all tie together with a HEA for our dear couple.

I have read and enjoyed all of Ms. Louise's books. And while this one is not my favorite I can still recommend it as a low angst sweet romance.

My Rating: 3.5*

This was a cute story that has Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. and Mrs. Gardiner visiting Pemberley as in canon, but Mr. Gardiner has an accident on the stairs during their tour and they need to remain at Pemberley as he cannot be moved until he is better. Elizabeth is distressed over the incident as well as having to stay. For Mr. Darcy is not expected until the next day, and Elizabeth is concerned with meeting him.

"If you only knew the truth of what happened between us." (quote from the book)

It was fun seeing how Elizabeth would hide when Darcy was about. But when they do finally meet, you could feel all the awkwardness as well as the first tentative signs of wishing that the other now had a better opinion of them.

"...could he risk being rebuffed by Elizabeth a second time?" (quote from the book)

I enjoyed Georgiana in this book. Her developing friendship with Elizabeth and her sage words of advice to her brother were lovely to see. They both help each other in small but significant ways.

The changes to canon added an interesting twist on several fronts. Instead of the Bingley's arriving, the Westerfield's, long time family friends arrive. Will Mr. Darcy propose to Miss Westerfield? Then there is Wickham's role in this tale that is definitely more sinister. When he shows up more rumours fly.

Overall, I enjoyed the story, but there is more telling than showing. I also questioned the propriety of certain scenes. As for the magpie in this tale, I will leave that for you to find out!

This Pride and Prejudice variation takes place at Pemberley as the Gardniers' have an accident while touring the house on their holiday. Elizabeth does her best to hide from Darcy at first. Some of the avoidance situations are quite humorous. Eventually she is revealed and Darcy must deal with his feelings for Elizabeth while also entertaining a young lady that he was thinking to make an offer to. His emotions are all in a jumble and luckily he finds his way to Elizabeth for their happily ever after.

I loved the story, but the magpie part doesn't fit in the flow as well. It is a nickname given to Elizabeth by her father. It does pop up in different parts of the story so there is continuity, but it doesn't truly contribute to further the plot.

A very cute and easy read, beginning from E's trip to Derbyshire. Thankfully no Lydia branch of canon. This story mainly takes place in Pemberley, and surrounding areas, ending at Longbourn.
Writing flowed and I enjoyed reading it.

Reread- Just as good as the first time.

I started reading this book on Austen Variations, and in order to finish it, I had to purchase a copy. I am glad that I did. Darcy and Elizabeth didn't come together easily, but then, they never do!

This is a great book - the Gardiners and Elizabeth are at Pemberley when Mr Gardiner falls down the stairs meaning they all have to stay in the Pemberley infirmary. Mortified following the disaster our Huntsford proposal, Elizabeth doesn't want Darcy to know she's there, especially as he is there with Miss Westerfield to whom he is expected to become engaged...

Some of the other storylines are different - Wickham's tale isn't quite the same but he is still a scoundrel!! The timeline of events is different due to the stay at Pemberley. I particularly enjoyed the showdown with Lady Catherine. The growing relationship with Elizabeth and Darcy is lovely - as is the explanation for the title of the book.

I liked this book a lot, but didn't really love it. I think towards the end there was a lot of talk of 'rumours' which didn't really create the scandal they should have and were therefore little more than annoyance to all concerned - including the reader!

I love Kara Louise's Pride and Prejudice's variations, and this book did not disappoint! I love that sometimes this author sometimes changes the setting of the story, and sometimes decides to alter one thing in the plot and follow the resulting changes. In this novel, Elizabeth Bennet gets stuck at Pemberley for a while because her uncle, Mr. Gardiner, falls down some stairs during their visit and cracks some ribs. Eventually, Darcy finds out that Lizzy is in his house; however, he is entertaining a family with a woman he is considering marrying. Louise does a wonderful job of building her characters and the internal conflict. She also knows how to build suspense through character behavior and interaction. I really enjoyed watching the relationship between Darcy and Lizzy develop, and I loved getting to know Georgiana and watch her grow into a strong young woman.

I could not put this book down (even when I knew I needed to get to grading papers for school) and enjoyed every minute of it!

This would have to be the BEST P & P variation that I have read ! Most just write 'any old regency romance' without paying tribute or heed to Jane Austen's intent when writing P & P.
I enjoyed how Kara Louise deepened the characters known, how she not just quoted from P & P as others have done but interwove them to make sense of the character development. There is humour, doubt, a little suspense, romance, great language and the author stayed true to Jane Austen. Rare indeed!

Well worth the exorbitant price to get it shipped from the US to Australia.

What a clever name for this book! It's a nod to Darcy's woodcarving hobby, as well as Mr. Bennet's pet name for Elizabeth. Such was his despair after the events at Hunsford, he was unable to finish it.

Elizabeth was visiting Pemberley with the Gardiners, having been told that Darcy was not expected until the next day. Upon leaving to return to the inn, Elizabeth accidentally ran into Mr. Gardiner on the stairs. He fell and was injured. This required a stay at Pemberley, as he couldn't be moved. Darcy showed up a day early, forcing Elizabeth hide from him as long as she could, until he inevitably discovered she was there.

Then the problems began. It held my interest to the end.

A Magpie for Darcy

Lovely story. This is one of the most demonstrative Darcy's that I have read. I enjoyed the twists and turns of this story as our dear couple grew individually and as a couple.

I do like a good variation of Pride and Prejudice

This was a delightful story and kept me hooked even knowing the outcome. Wickham's character was wonderfully written. The outcome not expected. I look forward to reading more by this author.

I really enjoyed this story. I had read the first half as a work-in-progress, and enjoyed it just as much when I was able to read it in its entirety. It was not easy to put down, and I loved the ending.

Back reviewing books, read in 2023. I was in a bit of a phase in the start of 2023 and was reading all the P&P variations I could find. I found most of them, like this one, perfectly pleasant but not much to leave much of an impression.

This is the second variation I read by this author. The plot was exciting and well paced. I like variations that switch things up after the failed Kent proposal. In this case, Lydia never goes to Brighton, so Elizabeth doesn’t have that burden to deal with while at Pemberley with the Gardiners. It was also interesting to see an alternate path in which Darcy seeks to court another lady (this is before Elizabeth has returned into his life). This was refreshing to see a bit of competition for Elizabeth. Some things about this Elizabeth were a bit odd, like how she goes from being completely elusive, to arguing with Darcy at their first Pemberley dinner (about fox hunts!? :O). There were many charming scenes between E&D. My favorite being the awkward reunion in the potting shed during the rainstorm.

My only complaint is that the last 3 chapters dragged on and were rather dull. I still recommend this one!
