What would a hero risk to save an innocent? His life? His soul?
Phoenix locked down his addiction to dark magic and rejected his witch heritage millennia ago, but when he's the only warrior suited to help a suffering friend, the temptation is too great to ignore. He believes he can access that dark part of himself to save another and survive unscathed. His brothers aren't so sure.
Despite decades of effort, Storm Queen never quite fits in. Is it an adoption thing? A witch thing? Is it because she’s bound to the hotel and hasn’t been outside in years? When a beautiful, mountain of a man visits her in her dreams, her questions grow more urgent and her desires more undeniable. When she shows up in real life, her world is blown apart.
The Watchers of the Gray Series by JL Madore, joins the gritty, dark paranormal romance traditions of JR Ward, Sherrilyn Kenyon, and IT Lucas.
"Watcher Divided" is right. For my tastes, there was way too much dividing going on in this book. First, the storyline is divided between the lead couple of this book and the lead couples in the previous three books in the series. They are major characters, and their lives are impacting the plot, the hero, his impulses, and so, so much. You definitely need to read the previous books to get what's going on. Secondly, the story is divided between women. It almost headed into love triangle territory. Missed it by a squeak. And yet woman #2 is still going to be a character going forward. Thirdly, the big rescue scene (triggers for rape), is divided in such a way that the hero of the story isn't even there.
For all that dividing, there were some things I liked about this book. The characters are fun and interesting, and the banter among the Watchers and their women is a highlight. It was enjoyable getting to know Phoenix and his background, and the dark powers smoldering inside of him. There was is also a brutal, redemptive edge to these books that can shock at times. And no spoilers here on just WHO the heroine is. It would make the beginning of the book much less interesting.
I will certainly keep reading this series because as much as I am annoyed by all the interactions from the previous couples, I still need to see who will captivate the rest of the Watchers.
By the way, if you are looking for a witch-themed book for a Halloween challenge, this one will fit the bill!
First let me say that I absolutely love this series. It puts a nice twist on the paranormal genre by intertwining traditional paranormal characteristics forming an original paranormal characters.
I have been waiting for ages for book 4 and I must say I was not disappointed. Reading Pheonix's story was a surprise. I just knew his story was going to add a very intricate piece to the series. I like that the major characters still play a big part of the books. It allows continuum of the stories where the reader gets to see what's going on with all of them and brings the reader into the storyline. It's not just wham 2 people meet, go through some hurdles, fall in love and then the end. It's like we get to read about new characters while still keeping up with the lives of the others. They're all connected. Anyway, I hope that made sense. Nevertheless, please keep these books coming. Cant wait for Seth's story.
While trying to find a dark witch as a favor for a friend Phoenix comes across Storme the adoptive daughter of the dark witch high priestess. While rescuing Storme they find out that she is not who and what she thinks she is. While Storme deals with learning who she is she leaves Phoenix to deal with the growing darkness within himself with his only hope that she will return to him. I really felt for Phoenix, his mate left him not just the once but multiple times, he was estranged from his twin, and the growing darkness made him dangerous. I cried it was so sad at the end before the HEA kicked in. This is a complete book with no cheating or cliffhangers. I read this book in exchange for an honest review.
I was drawn in right from the first book, they kept me guessing and hoping right to the very end! Then of course JL brings in characters from the next book and that just triggers the need to HAVE THE NEXT ONE!! LOL love them all and thank you for introducing them to the readers!
After having read the other stories this was on brand and I actually like keeping up with the other former stories...only issue is there’s no trigger warning for the sexual assault that happens which I didn’t appreciate at all. Gotta give your readers a heads up for something like that smh
I have just finished reading this story and I have enjoyed it. Talk about the ups and downs in this story boy you shaw know how to hold a person in from the first book to this and I am now going for the next one I would like to say thank you for all your hard work and may fortune smile 😃on you always 😁from a bookworm that loves to read
Absolutely loved Phoenix and Storme's story, this series gets better with each instalment, highly recommend it to any paranormal fan but start with the first book as the characters and their world build and grow in sequence, can't wait for the next one ☺
No matter what she writes J.L. Madore entertains you with unimageable stories of love. The kind we all wish for... the kind Phoenix and Storme dream of but never imagine they will have but only if they can believe in themselves and each other.

Loved this book. The previous ones were great and it was good to have known some of Phoenix’s background but this enthralled me and built on his and Seth’s story. Well worth the read.
This one was a rip roaring ride. Great to see how the male’s turbulent emotions were handled by the author and to know that warriors do have softer emotions that are sometimes sidelined in novels as to wussy. Not so.
Great addition to this series, you have to love Pheonix and feel for him with all the hurdles he has had to negotiate through his existence. Then there is Storme, she doesn't know her true background and everyone is trying to control her, great female lead. Well written as with all this authors books, this series is a must for PNR fans.
Merged review:
Enjoyed the first book in the twins story. The dynamics between Pheonix and Seth are sorely tested in this book as Pheonix embraces his dark side. Action, heartbreak and love all in one package, what's not to like?
These books are really enjoyable and well written fantasy romances, I would recommend them to all who love PNR.
