Blood and Magic

Rate this book
Meet Gray. Dhampir. Undead. Cursed.

With supernatural powers and an insatiable need for blood, her existence is cursed.

When Gray awakens from a three-year spell induced coma, she not only discovers her lover as the one responsible, but that he has joined with a dangerous organization known as the Consilium to help them create a new breed of hybrid demons. Humans and Witches are being taken against their will, and fear is growing throughout the covens.

Gray never had a choice—forced to become a monster, the Dhampir. Yet after four hundred years, she still yearns for her humanity, like a long-lost echo from another life. She cannot allow the Consilium to do this to anyone else. With a renewed lust for vengeance, and a target on her back, Gray must use the one thing she swore never to in order to stop them—blood magic.

Armed with a magical pirate ship, an immortal monk, and a flower plucked from the Underworld, Gray will stop at nothing to start a war. Yet in her quest to track down her enemies, she uncovers a dark family secret that threatens to destroy the last shred of humanity she has left.

"Melissa Sercia packs a punch with her debut novel with its rich world building and unique interpretation of gothic literature. It’s a must read if you’re looking for a fresh take on gothic fantasy.” – Science Fiction Author, Samantha Huewagen ★★★★

AUTHOR INTERVIEW

Q: Why do you write?

A: When I was a kid, reading was a way for me to escape into magical worlds. I was about twelve years old when I first started writing and making up my own stories. It made me feel like I had a connection to the literary greats. Like I was in some sort of secret magical club. Today, I write to try and capture that magic in hopes to inspire writers and readers alike. To take my readers on a journey. An adventure. An escape. I write to breathe life into characters, to transport readers to fantasy settings, and to hopefully make people believe in magic again.

Q: What books do you write?

A: I write Fantasy and Science Fiction and all of its sub-genres. My current series, Blood and Darkness, is adult Urban Fantasy. I love playing with the real world and spinning it on its head, adding magical elements and creatures to it, and creating worlds within worlds. I keep a very long notebook of story ideas filled with everything from Portal Fantasy, Steampunk, and High Fantasy to Dystopian, Hard Sci-Fi, and Space Opera.

BLOOD AND DARKNESS

BLOOD AND MAGIC (book 1)
FLESH AND BONE (book 2)
GODS AND DEMONS (book 3)

Q: Why should readers pick up your books?

A: Blood and Darkness is a fast paced, page turning Urban Fantasy series. If you are a fan of Gothic settings, sexual tension, ancient prophecies, dark magic, and deep rooted mythology, then you will love this series. Ultimately, Blood and Darkness is about love and betrayal, revenge and redemption, and all-out war. From the first page of Blood and Magic to the last, you will not be able to put this series down. These characters will haunt you, their stories will stay with you, and they will leave you wanting more.

Loved this book! Melissa weaves a tale involving dhampirs and witches that keeps you on the edge of your seat and makes you root for the characters. The story is action packed and full of emotional depth that draws the reader in and makes them want more. The mythology she creates is unique and complex, adding depth and a vibrancy to the story and characters. The second book can't come soon enough!

This book hooks you in the first few chapters and keeps on delivering. Vampires, witches, shifters, pirates--what's not to love. It's got adventures and revenge plots, mystery and a little love. Great world building, well-developed suspense and plot, and a sense of travel that takes the reader with the characters for a ride that's worth the read. Highly recommend.

I really enjoyed reading this book! There is great worldbuilding and the magical system is fascinating. I love how it is based on mythology. It really adds depth to the story. We get an immediate sense of the characters and Gray is very likable, despite her struggles with the past and her own abilities. I also loved Valentina's character as well. I hope to see more of these characters and I can't wait to get started on the second book! This is my newest favorite series right now! I am so excited for Sercia and what she will write next. Highly recommend!

This book is a debut book, and I see great things ahead for this author. Gray is a very unique character who is full of revenge and wants to get back at the people responsible for her Dhampir status and her three-year sleep. What follows is a wild ride full of action, intrigue, and downright good writing. I did find the beginning just a little confusing as I kept feeling I’d missed something like a prequel or another book as the action started with not much explanation. But, I soon just went with it and settled down to enjoy this gothic fantasy and most things became clear after a while. This book is for those readers who enjoy a little bit of a darker urban fantasy with a great gothic feel. I look forward to more. Highly recommend! I received a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

BLOOD AND MAGIC!

Life prevented my timely review of author Melissa Sercia’s fantastic Blood and Magic, her debut urban-gothic novel. Now that months have passed, I find that not only is she a magnificent writer, but an utterly kind one at that, patient and understanding.

Her genre is one I typically don’t read but I am so glad I did! For her novel is a winner, compelling, beautifully written, with engaging characters and a fully intriguing plot line.

Her protagonist is Gray, a 400-year-old Dhampir (vampire-witch) placed in a three-year coma by her lover. She awakes ready for vengeance, as one would be wont to do, Dhampir or not! And oh my does Sercia take us on a wild adventure, from the dank swamps of N’Awlins, through the dark London underground, to the Underworld, and back, as Gray and her sidekick fight to near death an evil Consilium threatening to overtake the world.

This highly addictive read is the first of three in the author’s wildly popular Blood and Darkness series. I recommend it with two enthusiastic thumbs up and thank the author for her compassion!

Author Bio:
Melissa Sercia writes all things Fantasy and Science Fiction. She lives in California with her man and her cat and when not building whimsical fantasy worlds, can be found in the kitchen ... wine glass in hand ... whipping up fare as delicious as her writing.

A great dark urban fantasy from a debut author. This is a quick read with a fast-paced story and a fun new take on vampires.

I really enjoyed this book! The author weaves a complex story around the main character, a Dhampir named Gray, who's determined to make those responsible for turning her, her mother included, pay for what they've done. In a love and hate relationship with who she's been forced to become, the author's strong world-building and unique take on mythical creatures created a story I couldn't put down. Face-paced, action-packed, emotional, and interesting, this book has everything a reader can ask for. A must read for sure!

This book had the makings of a good story but marred by a couple of major failings.

First woefully inadequate world building. Apparently all these creatures were created by the Roman gods Apollo and Diana. And then? Who knows. Are they still “alive”, are the other ancient gods real, do they still have power in the world? No idea. In fact, the real world might as well not exist for all the time they spend in it/deal with it. How do they keep the magical world secret from the real world? Never mentioned or discussed.

My other big grippe is that the protagonists are supposed to be 400 years old but perpetually act like hormonal, oversexed, overly emotional teenagers. And there are a ton of other ways the 400 years make so sense. Gray is supposed to have been consumed with rage at the Consilium for four centuries and in all that time had accomplished bubkis, nada, zilch. She accomplishes infinitely more in like four weeks than in four centuries. She abs Valentina have been inseparable bff’s for the same 400 years but suddenly there are all these contacts she has that Gray knows nothing about. Really? And secrets that have been kept for decades or centuries suddenly unravel to both sides in like hours. Nonsense. The sad part is that the author could have dropped the 400 years nonsense and lost nothing. If Gray had only been turned 10-20 years ago (with maybe Valentina a little older) the whole story makes way more sense.

All in all not terrible but there is no shortage of better urban fantasy out there. Probably won’t bother with the rest of the series.

I was not ready for all the awesomeness this book was about to bring me! This book sinks it’s claws into you and doesn’t let go. I was totally ok with it. Right from the beginning, you’re off on an adventure. One filled with revenge and….ok mainly revenge. Vampires, witches, and paranormals oh my! This story had my heart racing. I couldn’t put it down. I needed to know what was coming next. I love the mythology the author added to the story, along with her twists on some paranormal creatures. The story is well written as well as the characters. Some twists you don’t see coming and an ending that will have you shook.

This is a fantastic read! It’s one of those unputdownable books that stays with you long after you’ve finished with it….I often think of Gray. I need book two like NOW! I can already tell this is going to be a favorite series. I give this 5 stars.

This book was interesting. It kept me engaged and the story flowed well. At times it seemed to move to fast but at the same time the overall suspense was great. This is book one and I will definitely read the others. I downloaded a copy of this book on Booksprout...

I found Blood and Magic to be an entertaining paranormal read. The story and world building reminded me of The Librarians with a side of a Twilight triangle thrown in. A variety of interesting characters were introduced and I look forward to seeing where future stories take them.

I was gifted a copy by the author and this is my honest review.

Blood and Magic is Melissa Sercia’s debut novel. Her main character, Gray (love the name), was forced to become a Dhampir (witch and vampire) against her will, then was placed into a three-year coma by her lover. As a result, she is out for vengeance. The book follows her and her sidekick, Valentina, as they fight the Consortium, a group of evil doers bent on creating hybrid demons. The world building, particularly in the Underworld and the Hall of Secrets. Some of the concepts were interesting. The sexual descriptions were repetitive. From a technical aspect, there were a number of misplaced modifiers that took me out of the story.

A Passionate Battle Between Good and Evil

This book is dark. Mischievous. An undercurrent of evil flows through every scene, emotion, and action, and it makes for a very good read.

I’ll admit this is my first paranormal book. Early on, I wasn’t quite sure what to make of it, as there seemed to be a little too much going on. After having finished it, I realized that this setup was necessary and that my initial concerns were more about my inexperience with the genre than with the story itself.

Melissa employs a strong yin/yang concept. No good happens without adverse effects, and nothing bad happens without a silver lining. This keeps the plot fresh; while I could see some of what was coming, much was not predictable, and that compelled me to read further to find out how each unexpected twist would play out.

Gray is a highly complex character, and Melissa brings her to life by opening her soul to the reader. She is flawed and imperfect, but we see how and why she makes each decision, even the more ill-informed ones. I did find her just a tad overly-dramatic at certain times, but that can be excused in light of the consequences of failure throughout the book.

The supporting cast left me with a few mixed feelings. As much as Gray was deep and complex, the other characters seemed a bit one-dimensional (perhaps Val is an exception). I realize they haves specific roles to play, but I would have liked a little more flavor to them. Seeing as there were many secondary characters, I know that might not be easy. That isn't to say I didn't like them, though. I did feel a certain frustration at how Dragos continued to insinuate himself into the dynamic.

The action scenes are violent and gory, matching the tone of the book and the reality of actual battles. There are no euphemisms or for death or injury, nothing delicate hiding the passion and bloodlust behind the attacks, and no skimping on the description of the injuries. That’s the way it should be, especially in a book that puts such effort into recognizing that good and evil are merely two sides of the same coin. Squeamish readers should be ready to have their limits pushed.

Overall, I was pleasantly surprised, and feel that fans of paranormal will find it an even better read than I did.

An intriguing storyline steeped in magic and supernaturals. Gray is dhampir, a vengeful one, looking for answers and revenge. With her fellow dhampir and bff Valentina, they travel the streets of London to the haunts of New Orleans and even to the dangerous depths of Hell for the knowledge they need to overcome the very ones responsible for what is happening. Each will find the other half of themselves, the one to link and bind to, becoming the first ever hybrids. A witch hybrid pair and a wolf hybrid pair. But getting there is a whole lot of dangerous. I really loved this! A great start to a promising series.

Blood and Darkness Book 1

I thought this book was great. Full of action and adventure. I thought Gray was great as a 400 year old Damphir. She was an amazing character in the book. With all the other people revolving around her trying to take the Consilium down, as they want to rule the world. The magical pirate ship was pretty cool too. I can't wait to read the next book in the series to see what comes!

This was a great read - I started and hated putting it down. Strong badass heroine with lots of personal issues - check. Multiple love interests, past and present - check. Mission: to save the world as she knows it - check. If you like Mercedes Thompson's and Anita Blake's adventures, read this.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

New Orleans, wolves, vampires and witches, uncontrollable bloodlust. Reminds me a lot of the tv show The Originals and Stefan Salvatore in Vampire Diaries. The gifts from Apollo and his sister (in this case Diana) was very reminiscent of Sherrilyn Kenyon’s Dark Hunter series even though the gifts and weaknesses were different.
The scene where Gray and Valentina drink blood from a human is quite confronting and gory, especially in front of a human who only just learned of their existence. Although I did admire how unapologetic they were about drinking blood for survival.
It seemed like one obstacle after another and the ‘big fight’ was over too quickly, considering what they had to go through to get there. The plot is full of twists and turns, which is usually a good thing, but this plot is very convoluted and possibly could have been stretched into two books.
Maybe take note of other series with longwinded plots and different factions of characters and historical terms and add a reference at the beginning or end of the books.
The book is full of filler words and sentences that aren’t necessary. For example:
[“Welcome, sister. I was wondering when you would finally grace me with your presence.” Her high-pitched voice unnerved me.
“Well, I always did like to arrive fashionably late.” Our politeness couldn’t mask the bitterness in both our voices.] would read easier with [“Welcome, sister. I was wondering when you would finally grace me with your presence.” She uttered.
“Well, I always did like to arrive fashionably late.” I replied, our saccharine voices belied our animosity].
[Valentina blushed a shade of red so deep, it matched her hair] would read better as [Valentina blushed so deep her face matched her hair]
The emotions of the characters seem over exaggerated and don’t always fit the actions of a character or the context of the scene. Aldric shaking Valentina to ask a question, shooting a look of contempt over a simple question, her face falling as Aldric smirked, Aldric fumed at Seven for knowing something they didn’t.
Drago’s face twisted in contempt. The animosity between them ran deep.
Aldric and Seven, Aldric seems to hate the man and no substantial reason is given to the reader.
Male egos are in full force in this book.
Gray got on my nerves. Feeling unwarranted guilt, telling Aldric she loved him in one scene and questioning it the second she was alone with her ex, repeatedly.
The few sex scenes could have been better. They were quick, not fully formed and didn’t really add to the plot.
The plot is a good one but the writing let it down. As fast as the plot progressed, sometimes too fast in areas that could use more and too slow in areas that could use less, the writing told more than it showed, meaning it was more passive than active.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

I am struggling to work out my feelings for this book - it was a brilliant storyline with interesting characters and concepts. I loved the world it was set in and all the magic involved. However, I personally really struggled with the pace of the book. It felt so rushed - moving from one scene to the next with a lack of world building and story telling. At the beginning two characters would meet, and several pages later there would be a line like “they have changed so much since I first met them”. It makes reading this feel so unrealistic. The climax of the book (i.e. the main scene the book was leading up to) was less than 7 kindle pages... it was such a disappointment as I was really looking forward to what was going to happen. Overall though I enjoyed the storyline and will read the next books in the series at some point.

Potential unmet.

I had to put the story aside when I was1/3 done. This story could be fierce and awesome. Instead, it's choppy with details not well thought out. The overarching story is great but the author missed the boat on the content needed to complete the story's vision. If I remember, I'll check this author out again in a few years. I'm guessing this is her first or one of her first books and it shows too much for me to enjoy. That said, Sercia imagined something original with incredible potential.

DNF. good ideas but the book reads like a first draft. I really wanted to read it as the story is fascinating but got frustrated at the lack of background and the jumpiness of the story. Melissa has great potential. I think her editor and publisher let her down by not polishing the book to the standard us avid readers expect.
