Salvage Rat

Rate this book
Star Force pilot and hero Wyatt McCoy left his medals and career behind after the Rim Wars, disillusioned and bitter when he learns the truths behind the conflict. He takes his converted gunship, the Nellie B, and heads to the Near Fringe, salvaging derelict ships and abandoned stations and mining colonies. Dr. Beth Parker is a space archeologist, documenting the history of planetary expansion and colonization for Kalok Enterprises and the Interplanetary Mining Guild. A piece of alien technology embeds itself in Beth’s arm, giving her the ability to see the energy impressions of long ago people and events. When Beth uncovers proof of genocide that could bring down the big mining companies, she’s the target of assassins. Wyatt makes a split-second decision to intervene, launching them both into a high-stakes cat-and-mouse game with some of the most powerful organizations in the system. They can prove Kalok and Interplan killed millions—but can they live long enough to tell their story?

“Knowledge changed a person, with no way to go back to the way it was before.”
A decorated hero, ex Rim War pilot, a Space arqueologist, mysterious alien tech relics, corporations’ political controls, discrepancies, lies, the protagonists realize they are being part of something bigger than themselves. Funny, irreverent and thoroughly enjoyable.
Betrayal, treason, hatred and downright greed and bigotry ... it is an exceptionally well written, interesting and fascinating book. It flowed really well and has well-drawn characters and I found it to be a real page-turner. The plot moved along, its well worth a read, keeps you hanging until the end.
I look forward to reading more of the author ‘s work.

This was a space western par extraordinaire. Definite action hooking you in from the first paragraph. My only negative thread throughout the book was the occasional jumps in both character and plot development where you had to make sure it wasn't the late evenings you stayed up reading it to make sure you didn't miss something as the author progressed. This being a (so far) stand-alone work, it was vaguely sad to miss out on the final resolution of the plot line.
Which, by the way, was rich and incrementally revealed as the story went on. The author did a fine job of taking interesting characters and gradually making them more complex. I'd have like to see a better resolution to Galen though.

Audiobook Review

Salvage Rat by Larry N. Martin, narrated by Jeffrey Kafer, is a lucky find—one I would have missed if not for a review I stumbled across. The author was new to me, the cover is generic (brown tones may suggest a space-western vibe, but still… it’s brown), and the title doesn’t exactly scream, “Pick me!” Oh, and the narrator was unknown to me—what rock was I living under?

I love discovering hidden gems, and this one certainly qualifies. It hasn’t received the attention it deserves. And I’m always in the mood for a space opera or western. So yeah, I gave it a shot—and had an absolute blast.

This audiobook is non-stop action. Vivid descriptions and likable characters had me glued to my headphones for hours. At under nine hours, every minute counts, and every interaction pushes the story forward. It left me breathless. While it’s a fast-paced listen (and, at times, I wished we could have lingered more in the places and with the people we meet), the characters are well-drawn and grow as the story progresses.

I especially loved the female lead—capable, strong, and admired for her expertise. Not just by the male lead, either. Sure, he’s taken by her looks, but what really matters is her talent and knowledge, making her an obvious choice as his business partner. She’s not the only fierce woman in the story, either, proving that male authors can write awesome female characters when they try. Thank you, Larry N. Martin—much appreciated.

The story packs in politics, evil corporations, academic outlaws, rebels, pirates, criminals, space battles, superstorms, killer bots, alien tech, and a whole lot of moral gray areas. It made me tear up, cheer, and enjoy some beautifully low-key pining. I’m now a little heartbroken, though, because while it works as a standalone, it also feels like the start of an epic space saga. And yet… no second book in sight. This one was released in 2018! Devastating.

At least I can console myself with Jeffrey Kafer’s extensive audiobook catalog. His deep, very pleasant voice brought the characters to life, shining as the disillusioned former soldier/war hero turned reckless scavenger and the levelheaded archaeologist—plus all the other personalities populating this adventure. A duet or dual narration would’ve been a treat, especially for the banter. Still, Kafer did a solid job voicing all genders. Some added nuance, particularly in distinguishing the female voices, might have helped, but his performance kept pace with the fast-moving story and made dual/duet narration feel unnecessary most of the time.

Fun space opera!
Such likeable characters with genuine motives trying to do good. Ye evil corporations out to squash our dynamic duo and half the population of the outer rim and fringe systems.

Good versus evil in a really fun way. An academic, an archaeologist, and an ex-soldier team up after finding themselves on the wrong end of corporate security guards trying to cover up their perfidy.

Strong, believable characters, great world building, a ton of action. Fast paced with some tense, vivid battle scenes and great humour sprinkled throughout.

Enjoyed it immensely. Now to stalk the author until the sequel appears!!

I received this as an eARC and felt compelled to write a review because this was such a terrific story!

It is CRIMINAL that this has less than 200 ratings on here because this is one of my best reads this year. So much action already in the first chapter alone. And it has everything I love in a space opera And in science fiction in general: a disillusioned former fighter pilot who was led to believe that he was fighting on the right side of the war, a tough ass nails space archaeologist who stumbles upon unknown alien tech and unravels injustices committed by evil corporations, and, best of all, this story heavily features the fringes of human inhabited space, which I appreciate a lot. Recognizing class struggle is an important aspect of dismantling an exploitative system and an oppressive one percent

I really loved that we saw the fire in Each character as the story progressed, not just the main characters. It portrays the necessity For the 99% to band together with Revolutionary fervor.

I also liked that the resistance had already existed before Wyatt and Beth came upon it. I like that this isn't the type of story that completely disregards entire communities so that the main characters could be heroes. much like in real life, people in the fringes aren't stupid. Before the main characters were ever heroes or try to be, the people have already started noticing and have made efforts to make change. It didn't take the appearance of the main characters for them to realize that because it was their lived experience, their reality. the main characters just happened to be in the right place at the right time with the right knowledge, and so a revolution is forged. forged by the sacrifices of those who came before them.

All that's left to do is to honor their sacrifice by continuing the struggle.

I know I make this sound like the main characters are selfless and they would give their life for this effort, which is not the case, I don't think. But they do have a strong sense of justice and if they die along the way, then they have to make sure that they're going to do as much damage as possible before Then.

I also liked that there was just a tiniest bit of romance but it wasn't done overly so. Don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with romance but I think that their romance provided a platform for their character development. They see each other as partners, as equals. They never kiss or lay with each other in the book but you can definitely feel that they trust each other the most in such a broken world. I am assuming the author is male based on the name and if so, this was a good portrayal of Beth, as in she wasn't just arm candy for the hero, which really happens often in science fiction. Instead she is a fully fleshed-out character of her own.

I do hope there will be a sequel. I listen to the audiobook and the narrator was incredible. On audible, the book is part of a series, though it is the only one on the list so far. I am hoping this means that there will be a sequel. I really want to know what was up with Mac because I believe there was something so much more nefarious with that subplot.

And I'm excited for Beth and Wyatt to make Intel runs for the resistance groups on top of their salvage runs. They could really turn the ties. I do hope that all the resistance groups find a way to come together as one, though that does seem possible with that last battle Along the shipping lanes.

Please excuse any spelling, grammar, or punctuation Eric. I am blind and only using dictation to write this review. I'm going to go back to this later when my optic nerves regenerate so I can add a little more insight. *spelling, grammar or punctuation errors

An ex-military space pilot who just wants to be left in peace is content with his existence with his ship, Nellie B, and salvaging from derelict ships, space stations, and abandoned places across the galaxy, but then one heroic gesture to help a lady archeologist in distress lands him on a bigger adventure than he bargained for. I had a jolly good time with this swashbuckling sci-fi adventure through space that that had me thinking western frontier meets Indiana Jones.

The book is a series of connected adventures for Wyatt and Beth as they combined a spot of salvage work with staying ahead of the trouble from the evil rich corporation on their tail and gathering the evidence that it truly is an evil. That's how Beth got into trouble in the first place. She has a cool alien implant that allows her to see ghostly death scenes and she saw several such scenes involving the corporation killing off so many people in their quest for the almighty dollar, erm, credit. If this weren't enough, the pair encounter killer bots and flesh-eating zombies, space pirates, super storms, tough off-grid characters, and the rebellion against the Kalok corporation.

It didn't dig deep into science or stress over space military tactics, but was descriptive enough to give me a colorful picture of setting, situation, and action scenes. There are a plethora of settings along the way and I enjoyed the variety of places and people they encounter. I enjoyed Wyatt's laissez-faire attitude that was paired by a deep sense of honor and heroism while Beth is analytical and more straightforward. They snip at each other now and then because of their difference ways of looking at things, but all in all they were a great partnership.

I think this is standalone, but I'm not sure. It wraps up after a big grand finale-style scene, but also leaves room for it to continue. It also left me with a few questions which makes me hope there is more. And, while I'm registering minor niggles, I would have liked to see them face off against actual named villains from the corporation, Kalok Enterprises. It remains a threat throughout, but the author did convey their evilness so I wasn't disappointed in the conflict.

The narrator, Jeffrey Kafer, was new to me (I think). I really enjoyed his work bringing Salvage Rat alive. He has a deep reverberating voice that is flexible so that he did the female voices just fine as well. Sometimes, he was very deliberate and others he picked up the pace to match the pacing of the book. He was a good fit for Salvage Rat and I'd love to pick up more books he narrates.

My first outing with author and narrator was a thumbs up and this space western adventure was just the thing.

My thanks to Tantor Audio for the opportunity to listen to this book in exchange for an honest review.

This is my second listen to the audiobook version of this book and I love it. I'm a sucker for space opera adventure genre and this one is a fast paced and exciting book.

Although the plot is not a hugely unique scenario: ex military soldier turned space ship salvager burned by a war, finds a new partner who has accidentally found out a conspiracy.

The pace of the plot and two main characters chemistry makes it very fun and worth one or even two listens.

This book feels like it could have been a setup for a series (I'm hoping it is), as the characters are interesting. But even as a single story it is well worth a read/listen.

Ps a shout out must goto the ex bartender robot Mac, he may have only been a side character covered over a few pages, but the author and narrator put life and soul into him :-)

What a fun romp through the questionable parts of space! I really enjoyed Salvage Rat Wyatt. He’s his own boss and he’s not sure he wants to share that job, but the time being he’s tied to Beth, our brainy space archaeologist. I’m a big fan of the TV show Firefly, and this story has echoes of that.

The combo of immediate survival and trying to bring down the big bad government agency really worked for me. Wyatt and Beth are forced to blast from one place to the next, uncovering more disturbing facts that point to a larger, wide-spread issue. They have to deal with or evade slavers, paranoid isolationists, paranoid friends, paranoid enemies, danger bots, etc. There is rarely a quiet moment for these two.

While I like both characters, we get to know Wyatt a bit more. He’s got this military past that seems simple on the surface, but as Beth eventually learns, it’s got nuances. Yet Wyatt isn’t all about himself, often admiring Beth’s abilities and knowledge even if he sometimes feels his lack of book learning leaves him behind.

Then there’s this alien tech that somehow can interface with Beth, showing her recorded memories of past atrocities and tragedies. These can be disturbing but they also supply key info to Beth. I like that her character isn’t a wilting flower, but she’s also a little reserved and doesn’t feel the need to kick ass at the drop of a gender-weighted insult.

The ending leaves us with a win but also with plenty of questions for the future of Beth and Wyatt. I definitely look forward to Book 2! 5/5 stars.

The Narration: Jeffrey Kafer is one of my favorite male narrators so it was great to have him on this book. He’s got the perfect disgruntled voice for Wyatt and I like his educated but not snotty voice for Beth. His voice for the bot Mac was pretty fun and his gravelly voice for Codger was spot on. Pacing was perfect & there were no technical issues with this recording. 5/5 stars.

This was a case of taking a chance. I’m a romance snob – yes, I admit it. I’ve lived for romance since my grandmother put my first Harlequin in my hand. Then the chance to listen to this book came across my desktop. If someone had put the book in my hand I probably would have wrinkled my nose and said no thanks. I do like science fiction and I like action & adventure – and yes it usually has a romance theme. But this time I really didn’t mind not having that – although I could pick up a hint or two along the way.

One reason that I even thought about listening was due to the narrator, Jeffrey Kafer. He has a great voice and it was a perfect way to get me lost in a world with Wyatt and Nellie. He reminded me what I loved about watching Star Trek when I was a kid. Thankfully he didn’t try and imitate a female voice. That would just have made me laugh. Even though the book isn’t told in the first person, I felt as if Wyatt was telling us the story.

Make no mistake though, just because I loved the show doesn’t mean that I’d ever pick up a book by Mr. Roddenberry – not my thing. And that would probably be the same here. I loved listening about our characters and the world that Mr. Martin has created but would probably have turned my nose up if someone put a copy of the book in my hand.

I thoroughly enjoyed building his world in my head. Our author made it very easy for me to picture every scene as it developed. Even if I did read the book, I don’t know that my mind would create the same pictures. And I don’t think it would have left me wanting more. When you can get out of your comfort zone and try something new, sometimes you’ll find an unexpected gem. But if you never try than you’ll never know what you might have missed.

Ex-military Wyatt McCoy, now surviving as a salvager, gets mixed in a conflict of huge proportions when trying to protect dr. Beth Parker. Beth is more than what she seems, and the big corporations are behind her because she knows their darkest secrets, and the best way of silencing someone is killing.

I had a great time listening to this audiobook, pure adventure in a space odyssey book with interesting characters and a conflict that matters. Captain McCoy is your typical ex-hero which now looks like an antihero, and is terribly attached to his ship, the Nellie B, an older model but with enough customization to make it unique, speedy, and special. Beth is not only a smart and courageous woman. She has an alien technology attached to her body that allows her to see how people died. Together they will try to uncover the truth and end Kalok enterprises for good.

The book is a rollercoaster of adventure, emotions, and secrets. I had a great time listening to it and couldn’t put it down. There were several twists and truths revealed along the way, and I’m impatient to continue listening to the series.

Jeffrey Kaffer was the perfect narrator for this story, creating an atmosphere of suspense at the right moments but also transmitting the character’s personalities with the right dose of humor, emotions, and seriousness. Voice changes were subtle but enough to follow dialogs easily.

I loved this audiobook, and I hope we get the rest of the series soon enough!

I received this book free and an ARC reader for voluntary review.

Synopsis
Wyatt us a war hero who just want to be left alone to salvage ships on the edge of space in peace. Beth fought her way of off a hard-scrabble farming planet to become a space archeologist and took a corporate sponsor hoping for the stability and notoriety such a public backer could supply. When she found proof that Kolak Enterprises was killing their workers, had caused the Rim War for profit, and was bombing worlds to maintain their control, they tried to kill her. Rescued by Wyatt, who just happened to be there, the pair join forces hoping to do a little good, aid the resistance, … and maybe even survive.

Review
I loved it! I didn’t put it down, but read it from cover to cover in one go. Martins action packed narrative and easy to read writing bring this space adventure to life. I appreciate his use of normal, common names, without crazy spellings. I found that made the book easy to read and helped me keep the characters straight in my head. There were small jumps in the time line at the chapter breaks, but it helped to keep the story moving along and not bogged down. The plot was reminiscent of other popular space themed stories like Firefly and Starship Troopers. The “bad guys,” some faceless supper corporation, are easy to hate and the “good guys,” all anti-heroes with their own checkered pasts, are easy to love. The action was bold and easy to follow without pages and pages of battle descriptions.

This will go on my “read again” shelf.

An adventure, with secrets at every corner and with a lot of entertainment – this is what this story brings to its readers. I was sold from the moment I laid eyes on the cover. It has the perfect color combination for what we have in the chapters.

So a man and a woman want to bring down a corporation that has been doing too much evil to our society. Our lady character is an awesome scientist, with some awesome technology at her disposal. I liked her abilities so much. She is “enhanced” enough not to put in lesser light her human abilities – intelligence and bravery. On the other hand, the male character used to be a hero. Now he is just a shadow of who he once was. But can Beth bring back Wyatt’s savior qualities? Is the war important enough?

Well, it is, important and engaging and with many twists. I had so much fun and it was so easy to get lost in this adventure. The author created a world so vivid, I could picture everything in my mind. With a great narration, it was like seeing a movie. Yes, I would have liked a little more voice acting, but it did not spoil y enjoyment at all.

All in all, I loved it very much and I cannot wait to see more from Larry N. Martin. He has a lot to offer and his characters are amazing. I do hope you’ll give it a try J

This was a really cool scifi, following Wyatt and Beth as they adventure through salvage work and gathering evidence, while attempting to stay ahead of a evil rich corporation on their tail.

Some of the technology in Salvage Rat is really awesome. Beth has an alien implant that allows her to see death scenes. Anndof course she sees the corporation killing off people. Plus killer-bots, zombies, space pirates, and super storms, this book has all the scifi goodness I was hoping for. For those of you concerned this will be too science-y, fear not. Larry N. Martin gives us just enough description to give us a clear picture without going way over our head.

Wyatt and Beth were fun characters to read. Wyatt has a laxidasical attitude, but he also has a deep sense of honor. Beth is a bit more analytical in her thinking, which causes some tension between the pair at times, but for the most part they worked well together.

Overall, I'm very impressed with Salvage Rat. If you're looking for a scifi that wont go too far over your head, but still packs a punch, recommend this one.

Reviewed on http://bookaddict.live,
I do enjoy my sci-fi so this book was very entertaining when Wyatt ex-military Salvage Rat lands on a planet which has top salvage. While there he spots a young women being shot at so he decides to help Beth a Space Archaeologist getaway.
So begins a partnership which leads them straight into the middle of rebellion as the more they salvage the evidence they find of mass cover ups.
Where whole colonies have been destroyed.
This is told from Wyatt’s point of view the narrator has a great voice that kept me on the ship with him. A Great piece of Science Fiction, one I would enjoy again.

DNF at chapter 2 of 14

Nothing wrong with the story - solid space opera, better than some. Just not in the right head space for it right now.

1. Huge scene jump between one and two, looks like done again between two and three. So episodic space opera. Some people will really like this.

2. Typical of Martin writing - lots of repeated descriptions. Chapter two while description Rum Row's structure, we get basically the same description three times. Could use a some line editing. Better would be doling out the information in the same three narrative places, but revealing different things each time - like peeling back history or setting up a conversation with adding in more details.

If you like Mr. Martin's writing and want to read a science fiction space opera, this book has you covered.

I am a huge fan of Firefly and the good ship Serenity, and I’m going to be inclined to like anything that even remotely reminds me of it. Larry N. Martin’s Salvage Rat, while having a totally distinct voice and plot, etc., easily passes that test and is more than merely liked. Wyatt McCoy and his Nellie B. Are in for a real adventure once they take on Beth Parker (see the publisher’s blurb for details), and we readers get a fun and exciting ride as a result. But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises. The book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, and it is easy to highly recommend.

Excellent! Meet Wyatt and Beth and enter their world of challenges. Wyatt McCoy is a salvage rat. During a run of salvaging he meet Dr. Beth Parker. When he meets her all hell has broken loose and she is running from gray suits. As you read this story you will learn about Kalok and Stellar Fed and more. You have lots of mystery, action , humor but no romance yet. I did find Mack very interesting and would like to see more bits of humor because stories need it to tone down some of the heavy stuff. There are lots of sub plots and twists to the story but I think you will enjoy the significant underlying main story which ties if all together! I highly recommend this book!

I read a snippet, then had to buy it

I do not recommend you buy this book and start reading it too late in the evening, or you will stay up far too late and not want to put it down. Now I have to go see if it is a series or not and get the others. I enjoyed it a lot, and if it is a series, look forward to seeing how they expand from here. I also wonder if the bots are more than they seem...yes it is worth reading it to understand that comment. 😃

I like space opera salvage stories. I like grizzled veteran heroes with archaeologist partners and personable AIs running their spacecraft. Salvage Rat fits the bill, except that the story is a clunker. It would have been fine if the story had stuck to doing salvage and exploring ruins. But Martin had to throw in a ho-hum revolution. Worse yet, the plot calls for the hero to dumb down the AI, removing the best character from the stage.

none stop

Great action from page one,the auther crams an amazing amount into the book, the main characters could do with a bit more development but there is sufficient to understand their motivation, the book is complete in itself but there is plenty scope for numerous sequels, hopefully the author will take the story further.

"Salvage Rat" is a fast-paced and energetic read. There's a lot going on in this story, but not so much that it gets confusing. I particularly enjoyed the relationships between various characters. The book is quite short, so some people may find the characters and relationships aren't given enough wordage, but it worked for me.

This is a fantastic space adventure. The characters are developed well and the world building is great. The storyline moves along consistently, with action pulling you in from the beginning and holding you until the last action filled page. I only hope this isn't a one off, as I am so looking forward to seeing what happens with the 'bad guys' lol.

I found this to be a very entertaining book. Most of the space fleet space opera books are great on worldbuilding but lack character development. This one has both. Ex-military Star force pilot Wyatt McCoy and Archaeologist Beth Parker were a good pair to follow. Good action, tension throughout the book. Narrator Jeffery Kafer does a great job as always bringing each character to life.

Good, written competently, but not captivating enough to want to continue the series. The universe feels mildly cribbed from firefly and the murderbot diaries. The characters as described are interesting, but the author never shows enough of them to for me to actually like them. There is no real evolution in the universe or characters, and it didn’t feel like that was the authors point.
