In the aftermath of a psychopath's obsession-fuelled murder spree through New York, Detective Daniel Callahan feels like he's been hit by a wrecking ball. It turns out that watching your best friend and your boss fall in love only to nearly lose it all takes a toll on a guy's emotional stability.
Peter Saracen has an out-of-control crush on the belligerent detective who seems to want nothing more than to toss him into a cell and throw away the key. When the body of an unidentified gang member is pulled from the East River and an old nemesis breaks out of prison, Peter finds himself on a whole new collision course with Daniel.
The line between personal and professional begins to blur. The dangers of the present take aim at the fragile possibility of Daniel and Peter's happily-ever-after, while ghosts of the past threaten the deepening bond between Daniel's boss James Carter and Assistant US Attorney, Derek Moore. With everything against them, there might not be any coming back from this.
Brooke Edwards is an Australian LGBTQ+ author and dreamer, slowly working her way through the stories that keep demanding (loudly) to be told. She's hopelessly obsessed with procedural law enforcement shows, flawed human beings and coffee - not necessarily in that order.

I'd never complain if Brooke just continued to write about this same group of characters.
Peter and Daniel... Oh boy. Peter really surprised me. He was very take charge when he finally settled himself and realized he just needed to go for it. I also really.loved that Peter isn't suddenly a different character from book 2. He's still a bit neurotic and he's unemployed crashing at his BFFs, working in a pizza place part time washing dishes and volunteering at the local community center. So we still have Peter from book 2 that got caught up in an investigation he had should have run the other way from, but he's slowly finding his way. He's not perfect and that's phenomenal!
And Daniel, although his character could have been horribly alpha, especially given his profession But he wasn't, he let Peter take care of him and lead the relationship when it felt right. And Peter likewise let Daniel lead. It was a perfect mesh actually. I absolutely enjoyed those two together.
Now, we get a huge glimpse of Derek and James in this book and honestly when it's all said and done those two are going to need a beach vacation. I kind of can't wait to see how these couples act when they're not running from danger and stupid bad guys
I won't even talk about bad guys because... Ugh!
Short of the long, just read it and be prepared for some surprises and anticipation for book 4. So much anticipation for book 4!
Loved this story of Peter Saracen and Daniel Callahan, the NYPD detective who Peter has been obsessed with for some time now. Peter puts himself in harm’s way by nosying around crime scenes and winds up needing protection. As the situation escalates between a killer at large and James’s man, Derek, the whole precinct is on edge, rightfully so.
Peter seems to be a balm to Daniel’s rough edges and worms his way into his heart. Again, this installment (or episode!) is action-packed and keeps the reader on the edge of their seat. No single person is truly front and center as Brooke Edwards does another outstanding job bringing in the whole cast. Positively crazy about this series and can’t wait for the next. Again ... Five-star read!
Wow, what a ride!! Again I’ll say it, this book is better than the last and ends on somewhat of a cliffhanger thats got me begging for book 4!
This book has twists and turns, a fair bit of danger and suspense, and wonderful wit and clever humour. I love the dynamic between Daniel and Peter and love Peter’s awkwardness! This is a fast paced thrill ride that continues on from the first two books and while including James and Derek, it focuses more on Daniel and Peter’s story.
With all the main characters in danger this book kept me on the edge of my seat and had me stressing about what was going to happen next. Brooke’s writing is detailed, fast paced and authentic that you are drawn into her world and taken on an intense journey. With the ending of this book, I can’t wait for book four!!
Another great read in this series and I look forward to seeing where Brooke takes us next!!
The roller coaster continues! This is an entertaining series that gets better with every installment and I really like this author's writing style. Cause and Effect is fast-paced, has multiple storylines, a lot of action, surprises at every turn and the characters are amazing. Just when you think everyone can relax and take a breath all hell breaks loose. With danger threatening from several directions all they can do is buckle up for the ride and hope they make it through. Peter and Daniel finally get their chance to be together and I love how sweet and caring Peter is. I don't like that it ends with a cliffhanger but I can't wait to read the next book in this exciting series.
Action, romance, steamy and lots of complications make a wonderful read! Double trouble and double the adventure. In this story we get Daniel and Peter's story and i had lots of wonderful surprises with their dynamics. We also get more of Derek and James and they sure need some fun and down time.
Enjoyed the story-line, kinda the kind that you grip your seat and hold on. Lots of great character development and such a roller-coaster of action.
Cause and Effect is the third book in the Casus Fortuitus Series and i am so ready for book four!
I was gifted this book from the author and i freely give my review.
This is the third book in The Casus Fortuitus Series. I enjoyed this story it did have a few problems though. The writing was better than the first 2 books, but the story still had a halting flow. The transitions were improved but still felt unconnected. And detail was needed throughout the book. Derek, James, Daniel and Peter are the MC’s of this book. Going between Daniel & Peter and Derek & James was a bit dizzying. I voluntarily read an advance copy of this book for an honest review
Another fantastic addition to this series. Well researched, with the perfect balance of intrigue, comic relief from her always amazing side characters, and sexual tension and heat that never fails to make me melt. I loved getting to know Daniel and Peter a bit more, can't wait for the next book!
The characters are in more danger than ever and I loved every minute of it. The ending left me desperate to read book 4, I can't get enough of this series.
Brooke Edwards was a new to me author with this series. The first two books read easily enough but didn’t reach me like this book. It’s so interesting to see two different couples entertwined. The relationships of the characters remind me of the no shame series by Nora Phoenix but with more mystery and no polyamory. Can’t wait to read the next book as it advances the storyline.
Cause and Effect is book three in the Casus Fortuitus series, and needs to be read as such. If you like the sound of this book then you really need to start at the beginning, which is Ms. Edward’s short story, Mens Rea. The first two books of the series (Mens Rea and Law & Disorder) focus on the relationship of James and Derek, while Cause and Effect develops the attraction between Daniel and Peter. However the plot of this series is an over arching one that plays out over the whole series, and rather than changing MCs, the author instead seems to gather more characters as the books continue. The point of view switches between all of these men plus a few secondary characters thrown in for good measure. In most cases I’d probably be complaining about the fact that that we shift between so many characters, but the author definitely made it work with this series. It was kinda quirky and fun, and some of the randomly thrown in scenes and points of view added a bit of levity to an otherwise serious plot.
As to the crime plot, it really is the whole point to this series. While I really enjoyed the relationships between the MCs they were almost secondary to the criminal drama unfolding throughout these books. In my review of the second book, I commented that I felt we never got to know the MCs sufficiently, and that was true, but reading all of these books together solves that problem. Each book feeds into the next and each couple continues to develop through following stories.
Having said that the romances are the focus of these books, I should add that I did still like their inclusion. The author seems to have a way of writing her characters that make them very relatable and likeable. When we first meet Peter he is a bit of a mess after breakup and is acting like a bit of an idiot. He doesn’t have any excitingly “cool” job but instead washes dishes at a pizza shop. While James and Daniel might be hot shot NYPD, they don’t always get things right, and their mistakes have consequences. And Derek, the smooth young attorney, is still suffering PTSD from the action in the last book, and is behaving like any messed up, terrified person would. I appreciated that none of these guys were perfect, or even close to perfect. It made the whole story more plausible.
Luckily I received books #3 and #4 at the same time. I think if I had to wait for the forth one, I’d be thinking some very mean thoughts in the author’s direction.
Incredible! This book is just as thrilling as the former. The crazy culprit escapes from prison, and chaos ensues. James and Derek are still amazing together and supporting characters Daniel and Peter are delightful, but different as chalk and cheese. I haven’t been this engrossed in a while. Looking forward to reading the next installment in this series.
