Legendary Rogues--a Regency era treat!

A dramatic conclusion to the the search for the search for the Thirteen Treasures of the Knights of the Round Table. "items gathered by Arthur and his knights for one of their own—Gareth—so that he could win his bride.”
Gideon Kersey is a direct descendant of Gareth and he has a plan to regain the dagger, one of the treasures, from Timothy Foliot the power behind the shadowy Camelot group, all descendants from Arthur's Knights, who are pursuing the treasures for their own ends.
Gideon and his friends want to reunite all the treasures and take them to safety.
Unfortunately Gideon is drawn into Foliot's plan to marry his daughter to Gideon thus securing the sacred bloodline to Foliot's descendants.
His daughter, Daphne is unaware of her father's obsession and has been pursuing her own studies of Morgan Le Fay and the cloak of invisibility. This is the part that really won me over as Morgan Le Fay or Morgana has always fascinated me and I find Burke's explanation of her role in the Arthurian cycle very pleasing.
Daphne is intelligent, focused and compassionate, also brilliantly sneaky when needed. That she's very attractive and there seems to be a startling alchemy between the two is something that Gideon fights as much as he is able.
Gideon needs the cloak to carry out his plan, and that search is an eye opener.
I found this last in the series a fascinating romp as the intrigue continued, with some very big surprises along the way.
Once again, I winged my way through this entrancing finale to the 'Legendary Rogues' and enjoyed every moment!

Series: Legendary Rogues #4
Publication Date: 1/29/19

This story just sucks you in from the very first word on the very first page and then holds you hostage long after you’ve read the last word. It is an exciting and intricately woven tale of romance, adventure, and mystery. The writing is excellent, the characters are all admirable, and I’m sorry that this is the last book in the series.

The series revolves around the Thirteen Treasures and the people who are seeking them – either to protect the treasures or to control them. These treasures date from the time of King Arthur, Merlin and Morgana and each is enchanted so that only a direct descendant of one of the Knights of the Round Table can wield their power. Each of the previous books dealt with a couple pursuing and finding one of the treasures – and this book deals with what happens with the treasures that have been found and the ones that have not. While you could read this as a standalone book, you would be missing a lot of details that I think are needed to enjoy the story. So, it is my opinion that this series needs to be read in order - besides, they are ALL great books.

Gideon, a direct descendant of one of the Knights of the Round Table, has been featured in the other books as more-or-less a villain. I think you could see his gradual metamorphosis from a staunch supporter of the villain in the series to a staunch opponent in this book. It was lovely to see him grow into his full potential in this story. He had a horrid father (you learn how bad in the previous books) who drove Gideon’s mother away. So, he had to deal with abandonment issues beginning when he was just eight years old. He had a deep, deep resentment of his mother for abandoning him and then his father brainwashed poor Gideon into believing he was just like his father. It took him a long time to realize that he wasn’t like his father and to try to change things. Then, you add in the villain of the series, who saw Gideon’s vulnerability and exploited it and you have a really mixed up young man. So, I have been anxiously awaiting this book to see Gideon in all his glory.

Daphne Foliot is an Arthurian scholar who is obsessed with Morgan le Fey. Daphne’s mother went missing when she was eight, but she was fortunate to have a very loving and supportive father who encouraged her pursuits. She’s small in stature, but large in intellect and chafes at not being allowed to be in the Order of the Round Table secret society to which her father belongs.

Timothy Foliot is Daphne’s father, but he isn’t the man she believes him to be. He’s the leader of an organization called Camelot, who want to find the treasures and use them for their own advantage. The Order of the Round Table want to protect the treasures, but Camelot wants to USE them, and both the treasures and Camelot are very dangerous things! Foliot is a madman, a fanatic, and very cunning.

Gideon Kersey has seen and even participated in some despicable things for the Camelot organization and he’s now seen them, and the leader, for what they are. He has every intention of obtaining the treasures and hiding them from all of mankind – for all time. His relatives, who found the treasures in the earlier books, have given them to Gideon to use as he sees fit in order to protect all of the treasures. It is Gideon’s plan to give those treasures to Foliot in order to gain his trust and then steal them back when he no longer needs Foliot. All Gideon needs to do is to find The Cloak that turns the wearer invisible.

After Gideon gives Foliot The Heart and Dyrnwyn (sword), Foliot informs Gideon that he wants him to marry his daughter. Gideon has no intention of marrying anyone, but he doesn’t dare let Foliot know that.

When Gideon and Daphne meet, there is a definite attraction – but Gideon knows he cannot trust the daughter of his enemy. He wonders if she knows what her father is, but as he gets to know her more, he decides she couldn’t possibly know. He knows that she’ll realize what her father is at some point, and he is really sorry that she’ll have to go through that.

The adventure is off and running for Gideon and Daphne and their journey to love is a really lovely one. They jaunt all over the country, hiding and escaping and fighting their attraction for each other. However, in the end, when a choice has to be made, it was made on the side of love.

I have read all of the books in this series and have loved all of them. That is true of this book as well. I loved catching up with the characters from the previous books and meeting new characters like Gwyneth from Brue Cottage.

Captivating the Scoundrel is the fourth and final book in Darcy Burke's Legandary Rogues series and is a historical romance and adventure.

Considering his actions in the previous book, I was doubting whether or not I would be able to support his character and find him redeemable. But he won me over and I fully believed that he was no longer the man he had been before. I also wasn't sure about Daphne for a while, as to whether she was in league with her father or not based on some of her actions, but he character grew on me as the book progressed.

I have really enjoyed this series and so had hoped there would be more books to be added, but I do think the author was right in having the series end here. With reading this book, it made sense to the series to culminate with Gideon's story. Were there to be more books, they would probably seem like an afterthought and maybe even seem forced. So although I'm sad to see the series end because I loved the adventure and danger throughout, I do think this was the perfect way for the series to end.

This book could be read on its own, but I'd recommend reading the whole series since the main characters from each book are all related and make appearances throughout the series(minus the prequel novella) and each book serves to find more of the 13 treasures.

I would like to thank the author, Darcy Burke, for sharing an electronic copy of Captivating the Scoundrel with me. This is my honest and voluntary review.

The beginning of the story threw me back a bit. It felt like I was suppose to know more about the back story of the 13 Treasures of Britain. But as I continued to read I remember Gideon from other stories. Things began to come back to me. I fell in love with Gideon. The story moves relatively quick. With some twist and turns.

The story has adventure, romance, mystery and a loveable H/H A Solid Good Read

Captivating the Scoundrel is the fourth book in the Legendary Rogues series by Darcy Burke. I haven't read any of the other books and believe that you don't need to in order to understand and enjoy this book. That said, I enjoyed this book so much that I am definitely going to go back and read the series from the start.

Daphne Foliot is an expert on all things Arthurian, impossible not to be with a father who is obsessed with that time but more importantly finding 13 magical artefacts wielded by the Knights of the round table. The order of the Round Table have been searching for the treasures in order to keep them safe, but Daphne's father is the leader of a secret group within the order called Camelot. He wants all the treasures found and plans to use them, he also wants to oust any of the members of the Order who aren't descendants of the Knights because he considers them not worthy. He is very much a control freak and is so obsessed with Arthurian times that he insists his daughter marry a descendant! She knows the time will come when she will have to do that but she dreads it because she really wanted to marry for love.

Gideon Kersey is the man in question, he is a descendant of Gareth and already he has brought Daphne's father, Timothy, two of the treasures which amazingly respond to Gideon's touch. He knows about Camelot, and he is trying to infiltrate them in order to oust them and at the same time find any information they may have in order for them to find the last of the treasures. To achieve that goal he needs to pretend to work with Timothy. The latter doesn't know if he can trust Gideon, so in order to test him, he tells him that he wants Gideon to marry his daughter. Gideon doesn't want to marry and certainly not to a woman he has never met, but if it helps him meet his goal then he agrees with Timothy's plans.

What follows is the amazing tale of how Gideon and Daphne get along with each other, their forced agreement to marry, and their anxiety of finding the other treasures. They have a very strong attraction between them one that normally they wouldn't fight, but how can they trust each other. If they do, could they work together to find the treasures only to have them taken by his wife who will give them to her father? So many trust issues in this book but one way or another, things work out, but does anybody get hurt in the process?

The story had me guessing and trying to figure out how it might end, there was never a dull moment, and when Gideon and Daphne start giving in to their attraction the steam starts coming off the page!

I only have one negative point to mention and that is that sometimes I forgot what era this book was set in. At times I thought it was set in modern times until I would read how a person would travel by horse and carriage, and about how a man and woman can't travel together unless married etc. Then I would realise that the book was set in older times than that. It got a little confusing now and then, but for the most part, the story was an enjoyable one and I am glad I read it.

The fourth in the series of Legendary Rogues , and non is more Legendary or Roguish than Gideon.
Yes , Darcy is in redeeming mode in this book , and so she should be , I’ve had a soft spot for this guy for a while now , I always seem to go for the black sheep .
But honestly Gideon is a great character, one I’ve never seen as bad, Not really .
He’s lonely, he’s needs love in the worst way , Mainly because he still has abandonment issues caused by his mother , he was brought up by maybe one of the most debauched fathers there ever was . But he’s always had something lurking there that’s been good , and in this book our author finds that and works wonders , in the end producing a character to be proud of and who is easy to love and call a hero .
Daphne has has a similar relationship with her parents but for different reasons , all will be revealed.
She’s kind though and she sees in Gideon all the good and strong features that have been missed .
When her father the nasty Foliot betroths the two, that’s when the fun starts .
Of course there is so much else to this story , the relics , the adventure, the guest characters from other books , Penn , Cate , Rhys , they all have a place in this story .
Darcy has written a finish to this series that is stunning in its complexity and emotion, and I’m really sad to see these Rogues go .
I highly Recommended both the book and series.

This book is the last in a series about the legend of King Arthur which is a favorite of mine. I’ve only read the last 2 books in the series but both were fun, exciting reads. I love an adventure story and this was definitely that.
Gideon is a widowed earl who is a descendent of a knight of the round table and doesn’t want to remarry. Daphne is the daughter of the villain who is trying to steal the treasures of the round table and remove all non descendants from the order that protects the legend. Daphne’s father tries to force her into a marriage with Gideon but he’s not having any of that. Daphne wants to find one of the treasures to prove herself to her father. So Gideon and Daphne set off to find the treasure and the adventure begins.

Captivating the scoundrel is the 4rth (and last?) book in the Legendary Rogues series. Gideon is the hero and Daphne the heroine. Their story begins with Daphne's father is practically forcing Gideon to marry his daughter. Fast forward a short time later, we have these two going on an adventure to find one of the missing artifacts, an invisible cloak like the one in Harry Potter. No one expected to fall for the other though.

Daphne and Gideon had an interesting journey and I liked it. Their story broke some of the rules that existed in the 19th century and it had a more modern take, but not too much to a point where it felt like I was reading a contemporary romance. There was a spark between them early on, but the romance blossomed slowly which was better if you ask me. The book was good and the main characters likable. If you are not familiar with the series you should know that the book is not your average historical romance, but it's more adventurous.

*Tiny thought that might be considered a spoiler below*

I was very surprised by the paranormal element that was included in the story. I wasn't expecting it and I was very happy to see it. I was expecting to find out that the artifacts were just a myth or something since I am not familiar with the series.

I loved that this story did not follow the typical, historical romance 'formula'. It was a very unique tale that immediately drew me in. Not only is this a very well-written book with wonderfully-interesting characters, but the suspense builds at just the right pace as the story unfolds.

Facing an arranged marriage she doesn't exactly want, Daphne Foliot agrees anyway because it is what he father wants for her and she owes him everything for raising her and supporting her dream of becoming the first female member of the Order of the Round Table. Though she'd prefer the semblance of independence she has eked out so she can continue her scholarship of Arthurian legend, she doesn't want to go back on the promise she made to her father, nor can she afford to live without his financial support.

Gideon Kersey, the Earl of Stratton, is heir to the Thirteen Treasures of Britain- the magical items gifted by King Arthur to his knight Gareth, Gideon's ancestor, in the 5th or 6th century. Like the Order, he also seeks the treasures, but he wants to keep them away from Camelot, a faction of the order, led by Daphne's father, that seeks to gather the treasures and wield their powers. As a demonstration of loyalty, Foliot demands Gideon wed his daughter, Daphne. Though he is still broken-hearted over the death of his wife two years previously, Gideon knows he has no choice but to agree and hope he's able to find all the treasures before a wedding can take place. He knows he must keep them safe from Foliot and his minions who have no qualms using violence to gain possession of the treasures.

Though neither wants to marry, they can't deny the spark that ignites between them. Gideon is a known rake with a tarnished reputation and only wants to locate and protect the treasures that are his birthright and legacy; he has no interest in marriage and certainly not in the risk of facing the pain of losing a wife again. Gideon is sick of Foliot's manipulations and his ruthless obsession with the treasures and is determined to see them safe. Along the way, however, Gideon finds himself inexplicably concerned with keeping Daphne safe, in direct conflict with his desire to break away from her father, his former mentor. Meanwhile, Daphne becomes torn between her love for her father and her growing feelings for Gideon. New revelations threaten everything she's ever believed in and she isn't sure what's true anymore or who can be trusted.

Gideon may not admit it, even to himself, but he is in desperate need of love, though he believes himself unworthy. His determination to protect his family's legacy from those who would use it for ill was very admirable. He started out a bit gruff and high handed, but the more I got to know his character, the more I liked him. Daphne's naivete, despite her extensive studies, annoyed me for a while, but as she began to open her eyes and grew closer to Gideon she grew on me as well. Despite his reluctance and their determination not to be together, there's lots of sexual tension between these two.

This book has it all: magic, romance, intrigue, adventure, shady characters. It took some getting into for me, probably because I haven't read the other installments in this series, but once the plot got going I couldn't put it down. I just kept rooting for these two to get it together.

I received an ARC via NetGalley. Thank you! All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Gideon Kersey, the Earl of Stratton (for now at least), direct descendant of Sir Gareth and sort of villain in the previous books, has turned over a new leaf, he no longer blindly follows Timothy Foliot, his former mentor and leader of the Camelot Sect with in the “Order”. His sole mission now is to find the 13 treasures and hide them away – from everyone. He goes to see Foliot and gives him Dyrnwyn, the Sword of Rhydderch Hael. He needs a dagger that is in Foliot’s possession to give to his half-brother Penn, so Penn can retrieve the Heart of Llanwllch, another one of the treasures. He promises to give Foliot the Heart to gain his trust. He has a plan, he just needs to find one more item – the Cloak of Morgan, which will render him invisible and enable him to reclaim the sword and the heart. Then he plans to find Sir Gareth’s resting place (which is said to contain the other treasures) and return the cloak, heart and sword to him and protect them from ever being used. Foliot agrees to give him the dagger, but wants more, he wants Gideon to marry his daughter Daphne and orders him to return for his house party.

Daphne Foliot is searching for the Cloak of Morgan to prove that Morgan Le Fay is not the evil witch she is portrayed as in Arthurian lore. She believes Morgan made the cloak and gave it to King Arthur to protect him. She wants to find the cloak before her father’s house party and use it as a bargaining chip to further her research. Currently, she is at the home of Rhys Bowen under an assumed name, hoping to find a clue to the cloak’s whereabouts in his library. Gideon arrives while she is studying a poem, which ends up being a dead end. They chat, she doesn’t understand the odd effect he has on her and Gideon flirts with her (shocking himself). When she leaves shortly after, he wonders who she is and what she is looking for, so he reads the poem she was studying – the cloak! Later Rhys and Penn discuss the ongoing search for the vicar who wants to testify that Penn, not Gideon is the Earl of Stratton and Rhys remembers that he has something for Gideon, a chest left to him by his Grandfather. Is it possible that the cloak is there? They check out the contents, no cloak, but there is a list of items that his mother brought with her to Stratton Hall, he would love to investigate, but cannot afford to upset Foliot by missing his party.

When Daphne arrives at her father’s home, he tells her he has found her a husband, she has no desire to marry, but is willing to at least meet the man. Gideon on the other hand has zero desire to marry, he was married before and the grief of losing Rose almost crushed him, and he will not marry again until he has to – which may be never if Penn is declared the earl. He brings Foliot the heart and is disgusted when Foliot orders him to use the heart to make Daphne fall in love with him. He pretends to do so, but hopes it doesn’t work. Later it seems like Daphne is enamored with him and he is horrified, but then learns she was just trying to make her father happy, they talk and he tells her what her father did, she is shocked and a little hurt, they decide to work together to find the cloak, but to do so, they have to appear to be betrothed. He pretends to leave to obtain a license for them to marry, but in reality goes to visit Lord Septon and his mother. Lord Septon provides him with some valuable information and he doesn’t plan on including Daphne in his quest, but when she shows up at Lord Septon’s and refuses to be put off, he has no choice but to take her along.
What follows is a well written story that is the adventure of a lifetime, complete with a hasty marriage, secret societies, life and death moments, steamy love scenes, secrets, lies, betrayal, heartache, treasure and true love. This is the last book in the series and can be read as a stand-alone, but do yourself a favor and read the books in order (they are all fantastic) so you will really learn about the “Order” and Gideon’s transformation.

My Thoughts:

I read book #3 of this series and loved it, and was looking forward to more of the same.

I just couldn't get into this book. It does have a similar nature to "Lord of Fortune" but unlike that book I just couldn't get drawn in.

I gave this story 3.75 of 5 stars for storyline and characterization. The heat is there but the chemistry seems lacking. I may try re-reading this one later. Maybe I will see it differently the second time around.

I received a complimentary copy of this book to read. This in no way affected my opinion of this title which I read and reviewed voluntarily.

Darcy knows how to end a series with a bang! I’ve loved the whole series, but this was favorite. The story of finding the cloak all the info surrounding Gideon being the heir to all of will have King Arthur lovers like me bouncing off the walls. Daphne and Gideon are a mix of enemies and allies turned lovers that will have you on the edge of your seat at every turn. From a rushed wedding to a great fight scene, I couldn’t put it down for a second.

Daphne is my favorite heroine. She is smart enough not to completely believe anything without proof and she listens to her heart. I loved her right away because of determined she was to find what she wanted. She was nothing like her father.

Gideon just wants to do what’s right. He was a bit of a villain in the previous books, but I knew there was more to him and I wasn’t disappointed. I loved how determined he was to keep the treasures safe. He knew he lost his heart to Daphne quickly.

The ending was exactly how I wished it happened even with Daphne doing the one thing I hoped she would do but didn’t expect her to do! So many things come out in this book that about different things that it’s a favorite. I’m sad to see the series end, but it ends on a great note.

I have read some books by Darcy Burke, all from The Untouchables series, so this book showed a different side of her talent.
Even if it is the last in a series, it can be read as a standalone story, over time, all the characters from the previous books were introduced.
This was the tale of a quest, a man who wants to right the wrongs he has done by restoring something grander and protecting those who could be harmed in the process. And the tale of the woman who wants to help him to prove she can be worthy too.
It was a long journey I followed with pleasure, at the beginning I felt a little lost by the amount of details and protagonists but soon, everything and everyone took its right place. Plus the romance was no insta-lust nor insta-Love, Daphné and Gideon had a great chemistry from their first encounter but they will have a long way before being able to trust another and then see it for who it is. They get to learn about each other, they come to appreciate the other, it will be only after, that their feelings might be able to evolve to something deeper than physical attraction.
I loved the magical elements added to the plot, it gave the story an enchanted atmosphere.

I AM IN LOVE!!!!!

Daphne Foliot always knew she'd have to marry the man her father chose for her. She never imagined to be in the center of a conspiracy that'll rock her entire World.

Forced to chose between her future husband and her father, Daphne's life is about to be upended like she never would have imagined.

I am in absolute awe of this story. Gideon and Daphne stole all of my heart and then some.

Gideon is the man of my dreams. He just wants to do good but also knows sometimes who have to pretend to be a crook in order to beat the actual crooks. He's just such a badass. I also constantly swooned at him falling for Daphne. It was an utter delight to read. He's the best kind of soul and like legit magical.

Daphne, my sweet summer child. She is naive but she's far from stupid. Also, she could take over this world if she wanted to and I'd gladly follow her. She was THE PERFECT match for Gideon and man their chemistry blew me away.

I actually really REALLY love this story. It has action, adventure, magic and my favourite myths of all, King Arthur. This book was such a delight to read. I am just blown away to the max.

An interesting plot that transports the reader to King Arthur's time and all of Merlin's magic and female worship through Morgana.
There is a treasure hunt, called Thirteen Treasures, and only a direct descendant of Arthur would have powers to deal with such treasure/power.
On top of this treasure hunt, where various families fighting for, there is the encounter of Gideon and Daphne, each with their family problems by virtue of having rude and greedy parents, and a love and complicity born between them, to the point that Daphne was being forced to make a tough decision.
Despite all the enchantment that the plot presents, I missed some elements presented in previous books, which I did not read, so I felt lost about few details.

Gideon Kersey is in a very difficult situation. His inheritance is in doubt and a devious man is attempting to manipulate his life.
Our worthy hero must use the gifts of his bloodline and the items he has found to set everything right again.
Daphne Foliot is a very intelligent woman who is fascinated with the life of a woman from long ago. Her father has always encouraged her learning but now wants her to marry a man of his choosing.
A very good adventure and treasure hunt with danger around every corner. Lovely characters and lots of fun. This is part of a series. Each book can be read on it's own but they are better read in order.
I loved it.

This brings to an end the exciting adventure of the search for the 13 Treasures of Britain. Gideon, a direct descendant of the original Knights of The Round Table, joins a modern version of it in order to hunt for the legendary Arthurian treasure and prevent it from being used for personal gain. Timothy is also obsessed with the treasure and is the head of Camelot, and wants to marry his daughter, Rose, to another KoTR descendant and take over the order. The drama builds through the story, with unforseen twists and a budding romance. I enjoyed the series and the characters, and would recommend it as an add to your TBR list.

This was the fourth book in the series but can be read as a standalone since I have not read the previous books. It sucks you in and is an interesting tale, but you have to pay attention from the very beginning so that you do not get lost. Gideon was on an adventure and he wants to fix mistakes he has made and ends up doing that with Daphne, these two had a love hate relationship but I so respected her. She was no pushover and not a nit wit, they were actually perfect for each other..Enjoy!

Their love may change the world, but their secrets could topple a dynasty. More medieval than regency, Captivating the Scoundrel is a fiery read. Burke thrusts readers into an intricately woven tale of drama, mystery and passionate romance. Gideon and Daphne never meant to fall in love. They just couldn't help themselves. I never meant to lose my heart. I just couldn't help myself. Once started, it must be finished. An imaginative adventure.

The Story in 4 Sentences or Less: Daphne Foliot is going to be married to a man who is descended from one of King Arthur’s knights, even if she doesn’t want to marry. But when she meets her Gideon Kersey, her intended, she can’t deny their mutual attraction or the fact that she suspects him of being a traitor to the Order of the Round Table. Gideon is willing to do anything to protect his family’s legacy from a secret society that wants to exploit the thirteen treasures of Britain, even if it means entering a loveless marriage with Daphne. As they both uncover the truth behind the Order’s objectives Daphne’s world is turned upside down and she has to depend on Gideon to get her out alive.

Like It? Hate it? Love it? Why? I’ve missed some of the books in this series but other than not knowing previous characters well, I found Captivating the Scoundrel easy enough to follow and I really enjoyed the story. So much so that I’m going to pick up the books I missed.

Daphne really jumped out at me when she first appeared, she was ambitious, intelligent, and determined. I loved that she was a lady scholar in a time where women were nothing more than pawns to be given over in marriage. Technically her father is using her as a pawn but Daphne isn’t going down without a fight and that’s a trait I enjoy in a heroine. If I had one complaint about her it was that despite having had to travel to study and having to converse with various people, she was ridiculously naïve about life and she came off as child like to me. You would think she would have been less trusting and more suspicious given her occupation.

Reading between the lines I was able to figure out that Gideon wasn’t always such a staunch opposer to the Order. Captivating the Scoundrel is his redemption story. I gathered Gideon was quite the villain but now he’s trying to do what’s right and that makes him much more interesting. I love a good bad boy goes good romance but what I wasn’t anticipating was just how vulnerable Gideon is. He seems like such a force to be reckoned with and he is when it comes to battle but when it comes to reconciling with his past, he was less confident. That element added to his character depth and his growth by the end was so satisfying. Especially since he started off very high handed and bossy and ended up becoming more of a leader.

Together Gideon and Daphne made a pretty great team. She’s the brains and he’s the brawn, just kidding they’re both do some heavy lifting which is what I like to see in these kinds of romances. They’re both team players and Gideon learns quickly not to underestimate Daphne’s ability to help him. And they’ve got great chemistry despite starting off on opposite sides. The romance was a slow burn even with the sizzling chemistry but you know what? It worked here. I enjoyed the mystery, the adventure, and the romance so it was a win-win situation for me.

Click It or Skip It? Click It. I’ll be going back to read the books I missed but I still feel I got the most out of this book.

I enjoyed the mystery in this book very much, and soaked up all the information about the Arthurian Legend, it really held my attention, I was less keen on the romance elements in this book.

Gideon Kersey is a descendant of the knights of the round table, and has joined a secret society called the Order of the Round Table, he is hunting for the thirteen treasures reputed to be part of the Arthurian legend, he is determined to reunite all the treasures, and prevent them being exploited for personal gain by the head of an organisation within the order called Camelot, Gideon has had an eventful life, his mother abandoned him when he was a baby to live with her lover, and he saw once a year, his father was a rake and a libertine, and encouraged him to follow in his footsteps. He was reformed by marriage to Rose, who died shortly after they wed, and he still mourns her and is determined to be a better man, and to never wed again.

Timothy Foliot is the head of Camelot, and obsessed with the Arthurian legend, he wants the thirteen treasures under his control, and employs a legion of henchmen to help him. He is obsessed with all things medieval, and is determined to arrange the marriage of his only child, Daphne, to a titled descendant of the original knights. He is determined to undermine the rest of the order and take control.

Daphne has also grown up without a mother, she is a scholar, also well versed in Arthurian lore, and keen to be accepted into the order herself, as the first woman, she is also hunting for information on her area of Arthurian study. She is allowed quite a lot of freedom by her father, and often travels for research purposes posing as a married woman. She loves her father dearly, and doesn’t understand why her mother left her.

Her father is keen for her to wed Gideon, and they are instantly attracted to each other, however, Gideon fights this hard. Daphne and Gideon agree to join forces to progress both their quests, and in the process, they agree to a betrothal. As their quests continue, they are married in truth, and as they uncover more of the mystery, Daphne comes to realise that her father is not the loving kind man he seems, Gideon finally lets go of his anger over being tricked into marriage, and they succeed in their quest together.

I found the romance a little unsatisfying for a couple of reasons, the will they/won’t they at the beginning of the book seems too contrived. I felt that the resolution of the issue of Daphne forcing Gideon’s hand wasn’t convincing either. Gideon is angry and resentful at first, then he isn’t, the path to this change of attitude is not explained and felt inconsistent to me.

Overall I found the suspense part of this book really captured my attention, but the romance was a little unsatisfying.

I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

Arthurian lore, secret societies, quest, and romance.

A fitting end to the Legendary Rogues series. Gideon, who in the first two books is a bit of the "bad" guy has turned over a new leaf, and has taken it upon himself to find the 13 treasures of Arthur's Knights and return them to the grave of Gareth (whom he is descended from) and hide it for all time. While a nobel cause..it just wouldn't be a quest if there were not bad guys to make it more interesting. Foliot, the head of camelot, a secret group inside the order of the round table, and a serious baddie arranges for his daughter to marry Gideon, she agrees because she is on her own quest to find the cloak of invisibility that Morgan le fay made for Arthur. Unaware of the true nature of her father she goes along willingly and along the way discovers the truth of things.. but who is lying her father whom has loved her all her life or the man she barely knows yet somehow has fallen in love with?

This is one of those stories that grabs you right from the beginning and doesn't let you go until you've read the whole thing. At around 250 pages it's a quick read and I honestly was sad when it ended, I loved this cast of characters and love that even thought it can be read as a stand alone the characters from the previous books make appearances which is fun because then it's like their story didn't end and you get little glimpses into their lives..after the happily ever after. Darcy has a warm and fluid writing style, that is full of witty banter and romance that makes you sigh a little or giggle or both. The only issue I had was that it starts off a little confusing if you hadn't read the previous books, but that is an easy remedy because the following chapters fill you in pretty quick...or I mean you can go read the other 3 books. I mean they are books about Arthurian legends and secret societies and magic and romance with sexy lords of the realm.

Reviewed on my blog, Becky on Books, on 2/7/19.

What an end to the series!

I'll admit it took me a bit to get into the book at first--I'd been a while since I'd read book 3 ( Lord of Fortune --confession time, it's the only other series book I've read so far, but that will change soon!) and I felt like I was playing catch up for a bit there, trying to remember what the deal was with the Order and Camelot and why people were so annoyed with Gideon. Once those series details were re-established in my brain, though, the story grabbed me and didn't want to let go!

Ms. Burke did a fantastic job of keeping us on the edge of our seats with this one--there were honestly times I wasn't 100% sure who could really be trusted, who believed what, and what choices the characters were really making. I knew what I wanted to be true, of course, but wasn't entirely sure that was what was going on--she had both this reader and Gideon pretty darn upset for at least a little while there!

And then...phew! she brings Gideon and Daphne back together, and all looks hopeful for our heroes (who are so gosh darn good together and of course deserve all the good things!)

But just when you think things are going well and the end of their quest is in sight--boom! Ms. Burke hits you with another plot twist (and a series character reunion, to soften the blow...at least a little ;) ) From that point on, you might as well not even pretend you're able to put the book down and get something else done. Once I hit 80-something% I was pretty much good for nothing until I got to their HEA--and OMG, it was such a ride. I'm sorry to see the series end, but it was a heck of a way to go!

Though I'll admit it is possible to just read this book and (eventually) figure out what you need to know about the series up to that point, the overarching series plot lines and changes that the characters go through along the way make this series an excellent choice for a binge read week (or weekend!) Those who have read some--or even better, all--of the other books before this one will get a lot more out of it. I know I'll be going back ASAP to read the first two, and appreciate them all the more already knowing the very happy ending they're all going to see in book four.

This is the fourth book in a series, but the first one I've read.  I'll admit that I was a little confused for the first couple chapters and really wasn't sure I was going to like where it was going.  I rather got the feeling that this book picks up from the last book in the series and the author just jumps right into the action.

There was a lot of information about Arthurian legends and people introduced right off the bat.  I was overwhelmed and not sure I was going to be able to keep up.  Thankfully, it all slowed down after the info dump and I was able to sort everything and enjoy the ride.

So the main characters in this tale are Gideon, Daphne and then Daphne's father, who happens to be the bad guy.  Gideon is playing a dangerous game with Daphne's father over some legendary Arthurian artifacts.  Daphne is part pawn in the whole affair, but she's also holds her own when it comes to discovering one of the artifacts.

There was definite chemistry between Gideon and Daphne, but the romance was pretty thin.  They circled around each other, had lots of trust issues mixed with lust and then all of the sudden they're in love.  But I'll be honest, the story wasn't so much about their romance but rather their adventure.  So it was easy to overlook the lack of courtship.

The adventure on the other hand was quite solid... once I figured out all the players and what was going on.  The story was quite unique and now I find myself wanting to go back and read this series from the beginning in hopes that it clears up some questions I had.  Captivating the Scoundrel felt like it was the end of the series, but if it's not, I'm definitely curious as to what will happen next.

Captivating the Scoundrel is a captivating story of ancient artifacts from King Arthur and his round table. It is also a wonderful romance between unlikely lovers. It’s interesting, well written, and extremely hard to put down. It’s set in August of 1819, Glastonbury.
Daphne Foliot is the daughter of Timothy Foliot. Her father is a member of the Order of the Round Table, but he’s a devious and dangerous man. However, she’s not aware of the truly evil man her father is.
Gideon Kersey, Earl of Stratton (almost) is a descendent of Gareth (a knight of King Arthur’s). Gideon has been raised by his father, an immoral man who wanted his son to become like him. Gideon did as his father during his youth but came to understand how immoral and wrong his father was. He changed his lifestyle and searched for a good woman. He met and married Rose. A lovely woman, but she died in a horseback accident, along with their unborn son. Gideon believes he has much to make up for but has some good friends who know the honorable man he is.
Gideon is helping Timothy Foliot find the Thirteen Treasures of King Arthur, but he realizes Timothy is an evil man bent on his own desires. He pretends to help him in order to find protect the treasures. To prove his loyalty to Foliot, Gideon promises to marry his daughter Daphne.
That’s the very basic setup, there is, of course, much more in the details but I don’t do spoilers. This is a story you must read for yourself. If you love building romance, dangerous quests, moves and counter moves this story is for you. It’s well written, exciting, heart warming and heart breaking all at the same time. The road to true love is fraught with many obstacles and they’re well twined together by author Darcy Burke.
Grab a copy and get ready for a wild ride!

***ARC was provided to me by NetGalley and the publisher for a fair and honest review***

Overall Rating: 3.5/5 A regency romance with tales of King Arthur’s knights and a touch of magic woven in.

Heroine (Daphne Foliot): 3.5/5 She is the daughter of a madman who wields a lot of power. Daphne proves to be adept at lying when needed and is a scholar bent on proving Morgana was a healer rather than a evil sorceress.

Hero (Gideon Kersey): 4/5 He is a viscount who just inherited an earldom from his father. He has a talent for finding lost treasures and can even evoke the magic within them.

Plot: 3/5 Gideon works for Foliot, a madman bent on re-creating Camelot. Gideon has seen the error in trusting him before the book’s start but must keep up appearances. To test his loyalty and because Gideon is a descendent of one of Arthur’s knights, he forces Gideon into marrying his daughter Daphne. Daphne and Gideon set out on a quest to find another treasure, but can they also find love along the way?

Personal Review: The premiss is super creative, and I liked it a lot. But the plot was a tad unfocused, I wish Daphne’s need to prove Morgana’s past as a healer played more into it than Morgana just being related to Gideon. Yes it connected the plot threads but Daphne’s didn’t serve the greater narrative. I also would have like the different treasures to have been used more, especially the heart after Gwyneth mentions it was originally given to a women. Gideon had faked using it on Daphne twice and it feeds mad Foliot’s delusions but it never is truly used. I assumed after that interaction that Daphne or Gwyneth would have to use it but nope. The story ends without anyone actually using it.

Gideon Kersey is quickly coming to realize he has been working for the wrong side. The thirteen treasures of Britian must be preserved and the best way to do that is to bury them with his ancestor, Gareth. First, Gideon must find the last article, the cloak. With the help of an unlikely ally, Gideon is certain he can carry out this task.

Daphne Foliot agreed to marry Gideon because her father asked it of her. The fact that he is a descendant of one of Arthur's knights only adds to his appeal. Still, Daphne would never marry him if he truly did not wish to marry her in return. Daphne owes her father her loyalty and if that is in helping Gideon, that doesn't seem like such a hardship. What happens when secrets and lies are exposed? Who can Daphne trust, the man she has fallen in love with or the man who raised her?

Author Darcy Burke's gripping LEGENDARY ROGUES series consists of four books, THE de VALERY CODE, ROMANCING THE EARL, LORD OF FORTUNE and CAPTIVATING THE SCOUNDREL. The latest installment, CAPTIVATING THE SCOUNDREL is a fast-paced and adventure-filled, not to mention crazy passionate, read. I give it 3.5 stars. Daphne and Gideon are perfect for one another. They both have very different obstacles to overcome. Gideon is coping with the loss of his pregnant wife years ago. Both have come to discover the not so great sides of their fathers. Getting to their happily ever after is going to be a challenge, but one they can certainly handle. I have only read the first book in this series, so I'm looking forward to picking up books 2 & 3. For readers interested in Arthurian legends, Ms. Burke's LEGENDARY ROGUES is the perfect series for you.
