Twelve years ago, Brooke Josephson suffered a horrifying ordeal at the hands of a brutal kidnapper. When her best friend is murdered and a chilling link between the crimes is uncovered, she will do whatever it takes to stop the killer. FBI special agent Justin Sloan can help her. The expert profiler makes Brooke feel safe...and desired. She survived before. With his love, can she put the past to rest at last?
Cassie grew up in a small town at the very tip of southern Illinois. A tomboy, she spent most of her time outside and got into big trouble for breaking the trellis while climbing out her second-story bedroom window.
When her family moved to L.A., major culture shock ensued. She discovered that grapefruits grew on trees, television offered more than two channels, and all the other girls had breasts. While hiding out and waiting for her chest to develop, she read voraciously, raiding her mother's bookshelf for Mickey Spillane when she finished all her Nancy Drew novels.
Another move took her family to Denver, the place Cassie still calls home.
She graduated from North Central college outside Chicago, got married, and returned to Colorado where she worked in personnel at the Denver Post and lived in a mountain cabin without running water. Upon learning she was pregnant, a return to civilization seemed prudent. She settled in Denver, raised two amazing daughters, and started writing for Harlequin. After her divorce, she took a break from romance and wrote straight suspense.
During her frantic years as a single mom, writing books and working odd jobs to supplement her income, she hardly had time to breathe, much less to dream. Then something remarkable happened. She fell in love with a tall, sexy man who was an aerial photographer and the author of tough-guy mystery novels. Fortunately, he loved her back. She found her real-life hero, inherited three more grown kids and three grandchildren.
Cassie started writing romance again, loving every minute of a life filled with laughter, crazy road trips, sailboats, and journeys to Oregon with long walks on rocky beaches.
Not too long ago, the love of her life developed inoperable pancreatic cancer. With supportive friends and family standing by, he died at home.
Cassie now lives alone, surrounded by beautiful memories. She has no regrets and considers herself lucky to have found her soul mate, the man with whom she shared a perfect love.
The most disappointing thing about this book is that it could have been really good! And that's really saying something, considering it's from the pen of Cassie Miles, who is generally not my favourite Intrigue author. One beef with her Intrigue books is that the plots are half-baked, sometimes confusing and wrap up too quickly, in an offhand, who-cares manner. My biggest beef is that she seems to think she's writing romantic comedies with thriller elements, rather than proper romantic thrillers.
But here, it seems like Miles has really taken steps to create a proper, fleshed-out thriller with characters who aren't engaging in cutesy dialogue and waggling their eyebrows at each other, and generally treat their circumstances with the seriousness it deserves. Who would have thought? The subject matter is certainly darker than Miles' usual material. (She usually has light spy/espionage style plots.) This story involves Brooke Josephson, who was a kidnapping victim 12 years ago, along with five other girls with dark hair and blue eyes.
In the present, one of her fellow kidnap victims, Layla, has been discovered dead. Some of the other survivors, including Brooke herself, have reported strange goings-on themselves. In steps Special Agent Justin Sloan. He must figure out if this murder is linked to Brooke and the other girls' kidnapping 12 years ago, even if their kidnapper is now in jail. Of course, he is immediately drawn to Brooke, but a relationship between the two would be inappropriate, as their focus should remain on catching the killer (as well as the fact she is essentially a witness in his case.)
This gets off to a great start, immediately drawing you into the dark story of a woman who has survived a horrible kidnapping and how it has come back to haunt her, even though she has built up a new life for herself. Brooke is an interesting and sympathetic heroine, with a bit more complexity than your normal Intrigue heroine, due to this traumatic background. The author obviously had the sense to nix her usual screwball comedy schtick, as that wouldn't suit Brooke's character, although the sense of humour she does display is appropriate and makes sense.
The rest of the story is basically exploring the various red herrings that could be behind Layla's murder. It's done quite well - I spent the book convinced it was a particular character, only to be surprised when it was someone else. Miles surprisingly didn't go for the Scooby Doo surprise villain, instead making the culprit one of the many suspects. The big letdown here is that Miles ends it all in her typical it's-all-over-in-a-page, "That's it?" sort of ending. This well constructed story deserved a more drawn-out, suspenseful ending than the over-in-a-flash one we got.
Also, those who prefer the romance over the thrills might want to look elsewhere. It's light on the romance, and the subject matter is darker than usual, not only for the author herself, but for Intrigue in general. However, I quite enjoyed it! What a genuine pity the ending couldn't match what had come before it - this could have been a real winner! (3.5 rounded up to 4).
I really loved the dedication in this book. Thanks Cassie. I loved how Cassie this wrote story. She did it with style. Getting to know Brooke and Justin was really special. She covered the story really well for the issue was a interesting one. She had alot of really good twists in the plot kept you guessing to the end. Who did it is even more interesting. I like how she handeled Justin and that he had a very high moral code. It was a well written story with a great mix of suspense and romance. The storyline was excellent.
Oh boy I dont even know where to start, this book was intense. What the girls suffered at such a young age was brutal and indescribable but for Brooke to be able to be who she was as a grown up? Hands down one of the strongest woman I've read. I love how SA Sloan took charge and completely complemented Brooke, he understood her and vice-versa. The only thing I didn't like about the book was that the end when it came to them, it felt rushed. But to me it felt like, that was the author's way of saying 'this is the beginning of them, together.' Overall, a great book, the girls' stories captured my attention.
This is a quick read with intrigue and romance. Justin , a FBI investigator, teams up with Brooke, a former kidnap victim to solve the murder of one of her friends. Six girls had been kidnapped and several raped 12 years ago but they had eventually escaped. Some of the characters are very well developed.
A book with terrific characters and plenty of action. Before I knew it the book was over. Read this book and more importantly read this author. She's an artist!
