Many books written by Michele Hauf have been read by me, and I was delighted when this imaginative author joined the Intrigue line as I enjoy suspenseful romances. In her first release, there are lots of mysteries to be solved, while the danger to one woman keeps escalating. With all the unknowns in the story, I was never certain of what would be taking place nor the reason for an event to happen. As more and more facts are uncovered, I came to understand how it would take the heroine plus the hero to come up with the evidence needed to keep her safe from mounting threats.
After Jason Cash had to leave the CIA when an assignment did not go as intended, he is thankful to become the police chief of Frost Falls located in Minnesota. While most of the cases that he has to investigate are mundane, a body being found one morning may let him use his previous skills to prove his competency. When it seems a woman visiting the area might somehow be linked to the recent murder in several ways, Jason closely watches Yvette LaSalle to hopefully get some answers. As more is learned, the two are drawn into unanticipated peril.
With very colorful characters and an enthralling storyline, STORM WARNING held my interest during every compelling development. Much of the captivation comes from not knowing all the details that are causing problems for Yvette. As additional truths are revealed, I worried about the possibility of someone stalking her with the intent of causing harm. There are quite a few times when uncertainty made a scene engrossing, as the outcome was definitely in doubt. The Minnesota setting is very vividly portrayed, and I felt like I was experiencing the extreme cold and snowy environment, too. The citizens of Frost Falls demonstrating some of their habits made the book even more believable.
There is a good balance of suspenseful moments with situations where emotions are the focus. Michele Hauf is known for creating characters who are unique, and this talent is evident in the individuals featured in this story. Jason has a fabulous personality, and he tries to come across as positive by making lighthearted remarks. Though Yvette is a little more serious, she can also make quick-witted comments at the right time. As the couple interacts with one another, I came to understand their motivations and what led to many inner feelings. STORM WARNING is an entertaining first book as Ms. Hauf writes for a new line.

Jason Cash is a small town police chief after being bounced out of the CIA due to botching a mission. He develops a romantic interest in a new woman in town, Yvette LaSalle. The only problem is, a woman also by the name of Yvette has just been murdered, and he suspects there's a connection to this other Yvette, especially after she narrowly escapes an attack on her life. As for Yvette, that is actually a pseudonym, as she is an Interpol agent that has been sent into the depths of Minnesota due to the potentially dangerous information her photographic memory has stored in her brain after reading a mysterious spreadsheet in an email.
This plot held some interest for me, but unfortunately, after a fairly good start in setting up the story, just fell completely flat. After the attack on Yvette (real name Amelie Desauliniers), the plot goes absolutely nowhere. It's on a complete loop where we don't learn any new information and the characters never develop or progress beyond their initial conflicts. Jason is bitter about his CIA experience and is hoping this case will prevent the town's police station's imminent closure. Rinse and repeat, rinse and repeat. Yvette/Amelie isn't sure about continuing with her career with Interpol and what she should do with her life. Rinse and repeat, rinse and repeat.
Same goes with the plot. Is Yvette/Amelie's boss, Jacques Patron, alive or dead? What exactly was the information in that spreadsheet that Yvette memorised? Who sent the hitman after her? Our h and H ask themselves these questions over and over and OVER AGAIN, but really don't seem to be particularly concerned in getting answers to them. They're not the slightest bit proactive in obtaining the information that could give them the answers, especially considering that Yvette HAS ALL THE INFORMATION CONVENIENTLY LOCATED INSIDE HER PHOTOGRAPHIC MEMORY. It was all, "Just write it out when you feel like it." It was infuriating. If our h and H aren't feeling any urgency, why should I?
The romance is close to dead on arrival. Jason and Yvette find each other attractive, but only share a couple of kisses. Their conversation is mostly inane. It just feels like one conversation after another about their pasts, as they reveal parts of themselves bit by bit. It's all, "Thank you for sharing that with me," and zzzzz. Another reason I couldn't connect was because Jason and Yvette are barely even consistent as characters. Jason is far too cocky and confident for someone who is apparently experiencing a crisis of confidence after the loss of his job. And Yvette is way, way too STUPID for me to ever believe she passed Interpol training.
As for Yvette/Amelia: wow. Just wow. As far as TSTL heroines go, she's not at the same level as the exasperating moron in Desperate Strangers, but she hasn't got too many brain cells to rub together. She has gone her whole life never questioning anything. Someone tells her to go to the backwoods of Minnesota after reading an incriminating email? "Sure thing!" Despite attacks on her life, she continues to put herself in danger's way. How on earth did she last beyond a month in Interpol without getting shot in the head??? Jason isn't all that much better - he's always letting her wander off alone.
It took me over a week to read this category romance. While it wasn't awful, I never felt much urgency to return to it - kind of matching the lack of urgency in the book's own plotting and characters.

This is the 1st time I've read Michele's book. It had a good start from the beginning. With a mysterious death in a small town. I really liked the character Yvette LaSalle. For there was more to her then the average person. Jason Cash is a very interesting police chief. I like the twists and turns in this story. Its has the right mix of mystery and action in it. I'm curious to see who she writes about next. For its a interesting little town.

Great book great storyline. Love to see the brothers stories come along as well!
Couple small sections a little choppy but otherwise I enjoyed my first book by this author!

Storm Warning by Michele Hauf, is a Harlequin Intrigue. I enjoyed this romantic suspense story. It takes place in Frost Falls, Minnesota where Jason Cash is chief of police. His first big case since leaving the CIA, begins with the murder of a young woman named Yvette Pearson. Then he meets another woman, Yvette LaSalle, who is visiting Frost Falls. Two Yvettes? Now someone is trying to kill Yvette LaSalle and Jason has his work cut out for him. Yvette needs to trust Jason to stay safe. This story is full of secrets and twists and turns. I liked it and read it in one sitting.
