Princess Snow Cavell finds herself captured by her evil stepmother and handed over to seven ruthless men known as Shadows—the most feared assassins in the known galaxies. Snow’s link to the Cosmos is a threat, one that can no longer be tolerated if her stepmother intends to win the war and rule the Intergalactic Alliance.
Their orders are clear—either execute her or deposit her on one of the slaver colonies to be sold. But the Shadows have other plans for the beauty, plans that will fracture alliances throughout the galaxies and shift the tide of the Intergalactic War.
No one controls the Shadows. They’d sworn to remain neutral during the War, but all bets are off now that Snow’s life hangs in the balance.
**Author's Note** This work was originally published in April 2018 as part of the Once Upon a Harem Series.
Born in small-town Texas, Cara Carnes was a princess, a pirate, fashion model, actress, rock star and Jon Bon Jovi’s wife all before the age of 13.
In reality, her fascination for enthralling worlds took seed somewhere amidst a somewhat dull day job and a wonderful life filled with family and friends. When she’s not cemented to her chair, Cara loves travelling, photography and reading.
Snow and the Shadows was a beautiful, original and great retelling of the tale of Snow White. The world building was complex, the heroine likeable and the relationships beautiful. Many things happened in a few hundred pages -too many even- and the story would have probably been better told with a second book. But if i might have been quite lost from times to times, it was also greatly enjoyable.
This action packed reverse harem sci-fi romance is about as far as you can get from fairy stories... mostly...
I can understand exactly why the title might make you think immediately of Snow White, and it made me think the same, but 'Snow and The Shadows', the second book in the new, multi-author Once Upon A Harem series of stand alone reverse harem science fiction romances really isn't yet another rewrite of the age old fairy story and there's only a passing resemblance in the form of the wicked step-mother and the seven guys who rescue Snow from certain death at her hands.
And Wow! I was sucked into this terrific story before I'd finished the first paragraph and really didn't want to be interrupted until I'd finished it. In fact I was so invested in the characters and what was happening I didn't even want to stop reading when I was so tired all my body wanted to do was sleep. The need to keep reading was almost a compulsion, so be warned, start early in the day. There are so many new, different and convoluted things going on in this book that I practically tied my brain in knots keeping up with them, but at the same time, I had no trouble following everything on the different planes of existence in the story and it got a lot easier once I decided to use the 'Tron' method of separating the physical from the psychological. Then I understood it perfectly and thanked my lucky stars I've always loved sci-fi, and watched the original 'Tron' when it first came out about 35 years or so ago!!! (the sadly short-lived 1980s series 'Automan' helped too).
This is yet another example of why Cara Carnes is one of my all-time favourite authors. I absolutely love her books, she never disappoints and no matter what genre she's writing in, if you want a powerfully written and exceptionally good, gritty, action packed and fast paced thriller type adventure with feisty female characters, hunkalicious hot guys, a slow burn romance with some steamy bits, humour and a happily ever after, then she's definitely your girl.
I'm not going to give spoilers and explain the various powers and abilities possessed by the main characters that appear and are explained as the story progresses, nor am I going to tell you much about the history leading up to Snow's rescue and ultimate victory over her so-called father and step-mother but rest assured there is a new era dawning in the galaxies subjugated by them in their desperate attempt to rule over all the races who follow 'The Oracle'. There's a story there, too, but you have to read the book to find out what it is and oh boy, it's a totally unexpected and jaw dropping doozy!!! This story is positively filled with revelations, twists and turns. I absolutely loved Snow and her Roteran Shadow mates Ren, Dacien, Varik, Ashan, Slade, Marden and their squadron leader Zelig. The Dark Guardian characters were terrific too. I especially liked Slone and hope that Snow gets her wish for them and their futures. The Avaru characters Xan, Molden and their mate, Nikki, are also terrific and their input is more important than it at first appears and becomes even more apparent when you find out Nikki's other name and who they actually are. I could go on and on about this absolutely fantastic story but I think I've probably said enough already. The book has a happily ever after end, but there are threads left open for at least one follow-up and I seriously hope there will be more books in this totally spellbinding and absolutely gripping series. I really can't wait to read them. I've given 'Snow and The Shadows' 5 more than well earned stars and really wish there was a category for those books that are exceptional, because this would definitely qualify. I'm sure I'll be reading it again many, many times (I feel the pull already and I only finished reading it yesterday!) and have added it to my list of books to rescue if the house was burning down.

🔷️Princess Snow Cavell is no princess her she is a half breed slave for King Cavell, ruler of the Skeron Empire, her father. He sentenced her to the ship Paradox with only her three guards and one caregiver. Traveling the Galaxy at a slow pace. Her father married Queen Vilma, ruler of the Crunan Empire, who controlled the Summoner’s Well or did she? Queen Wilma wanted it all the whole Galaxy but first she had to get rid of Snow. She hired a squadron of Roteran Shadows, Zelig, Ashan, Ren, Dacian, Slade, Varik and Marden who were given credits by Queen Vilma to sell the slave or kill her. BUT she didn't realize "Snow is the ONE"
Snow Cavell was born a slave, daughter of the Skeron King. After her mother died, she was banished with three protectors and a caretaker to live on an old spaceship sent drifting through space. She has had no contact with anyone other than these four since. When her father remarries the evil Queen Vilma her ship is captured, her companions killed, and Snow is handed over to seven assassins, Roteran Shadows. Their orders are to kill her or sell her. However, the Shadows have been searching for Snow. There is a prophecy that there is one who can end the Intergalactic War, end the reign of Queen Vilma, and return the worlds to peace and prosperity. Once they feel the power surrounding Snow they believe that they have found the one they have long searched for. Not only do they feel her power but they recognize her as mate. Shadows have remained neutral in the war but once Queen Vilma threatens Snow, they will do whatever is necessary to keep her safe.
Snow and the Shadows is the second book in Once Upon a Harem, a monthly multi-authored series, each a retelling of a different fairy-tale. This is obviously Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. This sci-fi paranormal RH is so much better than the original!! Snow is a force to be reckoned with. This is no dainty"princess". She's quick-thinking, excellent with weapons; she's a gifted healer; powerful communicating with the well and spirits, and she is compassionate and passionate. The Shadows are soul harvesters. Zelig, the commander; Varik, the medical officer; Ren, the engineer, Dacian, the tactician and historian; Marden and Slade, the security; and Ashan, the bond and siphon, the one who does whatever needs doing, who takes on their emotional pain. These men as close as brothers and support one another, yet they all carry their own pain and darkness. Snow is the missing piece. She soothes them, brings light to their dark. The connection between Snow and her Shadows is remarkable. There has to be a quickened pace for a stand-alone story yet time is still taken to build relationships and to move slowly with an inexperienced young girl. There is a connection that gives this story a true HEA feel. This is fairy-tale weaving at its best. Great adaptation of a classic, clever twists, compelling characters.
I really liked this one. Some has been a slave all of her life. She has been floating in a heap of a ship with 4 others who were out there to provide for her. The others were more Anna's friends than jailers and they taught her how to fight and use knives to defend herself. The 7 shadows were sent to capture Snow and then we're told to either sell her or kill her, but they had to send proof to the queen. The Shadows sound so much more sinister than what they are and they are such an original character. The Shadows are one of my favorite things about this story. Snow is also a great character and compliments the Shadows because she is not meek at all. I liked this book more than book 1. This has originality, great characters, and it's just a great story.
Incredible story about Snow and her seven Shadows. I like the twist at the end. And I love how she is able to interact and calm with their spirits when no one else could.
Snow is the daughter of a traitor King and a slave. After her mother's death, she was sent into space with 3 guards and a nanny as a child. For 10 year she has roamed space in exile. Now the Kings new wife, has come for her. Snow's mother's people are summoner's, and are able to control great power, but only those of royal birth are true conduits for the Oracle. The Queen needs that power to conquer the galaxy and will eliminate anyone who gets in her way.
Snow is not weak. Her guards have trained her in the art of war, and she is willing fight to the death rather than give the queen what she wants. Aid comes to Snow from an unexpected source. A Squadron of Roteran Shadows have come with the Queen. 7 Fierce warriors, with very unique and special abilities, who's people have remained neutral, through the galactic war. They are traditionally the guardians of the summoner's well, and enforcers of the Oracle's will. They save Snow and defy the queen by protecting her. She is their mate and they suspect she is the Omega, the true heir to the royal line of her people and the one who will be able to end the war. Zelig is the commander. Varik their medical officer, Ren, their engineer, Dacian, their tactician and historian, Ashan is the siphon, who take their emotional pain. Marden, is security along with Slade. A fast pace, a little steamy SiFI romance. Great world building. Loved Snow and her men. Really hoping Nikki and her men get a story and that Admiral Sloan and his Dark Guardians get a story too. I voluntarily read and advance readers copy of this book, and have pre-ordered all the books available in this multi-author series.
This is my first experience with this author but if this book is any indication of the caliber of their work, this definitely won’t be my last. The plot is inspired, the writing is extraordinary, and the characters are both authentic and engaging. I find these characters to be completely endearing, and they quickly found a place in my heart. They just draw you right into the story and before you know it, you’re totally invested in their lives and relationships. This book really had a bit of everything, running the gamut from full on action to heart stopping romance. The heroine is a strong, independent woman and the heroes are brave, loyal men who would risk anything for their true mate. This book checks all the right boxes, and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a sweet, sexy, and utterly compelling read.
*I was given an ARC of this book and voluntarily chose to review. All opinions are my own.
Snow Cavell. Daughter of the King. Slave. After her mother's death, Snow was secluded away on a ship with four caretakers. For ten years that was her life. Until her evil stepmother made her play in the war. Snow finds herself in the hands of seven of the most feared beings. Roteran Shadows. Assassins. Their mission is to kill Snow or deliver her to be sold. The shadows have their own secrets though. They've been looking for someone for a very long time. When they meet Snow, they think their search might be over. This means their true fight, has just begun.
This is the second book in the Once Upon A Harem Series but you don't have to have read the first book to read this one. They are all completely separate of each other. This one is based off of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. So you have Snow, your princess, the King who is easily led by his wife, the evil stepmother who is well...evil, and your seven shadows. We get so much more than the simple fairytale with this book though.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. We get a good introduction to the world we are in but it wasn't over done to where I wanted to skip around. The characters are all attention demanding. Snow may have been born a princess but she's never been treated like one. She was taught to fight and protect herself and that's what she does. She is fierce. Then there are the seven Roteran Shadows. Each is so different and yet they all mesh together and balance each other out. There is so much more to these Shadows than just being assassins though. I don't want to give spoilers away but the things that these Shadows have endured, the things they carry with them, you can't help but fall in love with them and their strength. The fact that Snow can calm them and give them some peace in their lives, beautifully written to bring them all together.
We get a whole lot of story in this one book. A great intro to the world and characters, a great journey, battles, secrets, lies, epic revelations. A perfectly paced relationship build for the characters and history between them. And while I would love to read more about Snow and her men, there's not an ending that leaves you hanging. We get answers!
I definitely recommend this book for you to read. If you have read Cara before or she's a new to you author, if you like fairytales or they just aren't your typical thing, give this book a go. I think it's got something for everyone.
What a great sci-fi and fantasy retelling of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. I've always been a fan of fairy tale retellings but my favourites are always the ones that have a good twist to them and this is one of those. Honestly, I think Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is one of the retellings that I've hardly seen so was really excited to read Snow and the Shadows.
I really loved how the author did this one. There are many difference from the fairy tale, for starters there are no dwarfs, but the seven shadows all have the characteristics that the dwarfs do. For example there's a grumpy and a happy and a doc. It was fun working out which character was which. There is also an evil Queen, but she's not after Snow for her being the fairest of them all. I loved how this story played out and I particularly enjoyed the world building that went along with this book. I really felt that the author could write many more books set in this world and for these characters (although this book is a standalone) and others and I would pick them up. To be honest, sci-fi isn't one of my favourite genres but when I read a book in this genre that's done well I always end up loving it and wishing other authors could write sci-fi how these ones do. Cara Carnes is a new author to me, and I only picked it up because it's a reverse harem book (a genre I do love) and a fairy tale retelling. I'm so glad I did because I really enjoyed reading this book and it's introduced me to a new author.
This is definitely a book I'll be rereading in the future and if you're looking for a good read with some epic world building, great and varied characters, some steam and a great story line then this is the book for you. This is a five star recommended read.
THIS should have been the first book in this series! I almost gave up on the series after the disaster that was the first book, but I decided to give one more a try since they were different author's and I am so glad I did. This one blew that first book out of the water. In a huge way. Whoever decided the other of this series made a big boo boo. This one sucked me in and wouldn't let me go. It had great world and character building. It has an intricate and interesting plot. There was not a boring moment in it. I have two small complaints but they were not worth removing a star for. There was entirely too little sex for a reverse harem and what we got was most YA like and normally that would ruin a book for me, but fortunately the story was so interesting that I could overlook it. My second issue was really a question that made no sense in the storyline. Supposedly these warriors take on the souls of judged and worthy warriors who die. Yet many were carrying evil souls, which makes no sense at all. I would think any would not judged worthy would not earn the right to become a part of a warrior. I just could not understand why the Guardians are forced to take on evil souls. Supposedly, the host takes on the personality of their souls, so permitting evil souls in just doesn't seem like it should ever be allowed. Isn't that the point of the judgement? Anyway, it's possible there is something I am missing, but it bothered me. Despite these things this was one of the better stories I have read in awhile. We got a strong loving heroine who wasn't stupid and constantly doing stupid things. Yay for a great lead character!
I loved the first one in the Once Upon A Reverse Harem series, Planet Bear which was a retelling of Goldilocks, with a space themed twist. Snow and the Shadows is a twist on, you guessed it, Snow White! Also with a space themed twist and i think it has become one of my favourite Snow White retellings.
Snow Cavell is the daughter of a King. And a slave. And she was born into slavery as well. She was banished by her father to roam space on a lonely ship with four caretakers and guardians who became her everthing. But now the King, her despicable father has married Queen Vilma, uniting Crunan and Skeron forces turning the tide of the intergalactic war. And now she is at the mercy of the queen who has handed her over to the shadows to be killed or sold at the slave market auction. But the Shadows have other plans for Snow!
I absolutely adored Snow. She was kicka$$ and fierce and resilient and strong. At first she looked at herself a little less because she was a slave and had been been all her life. A little hard habit to break. And she smashed that! And the Shadows were amazing they all had differences but i think the real standouts for me were Marden, Zelig, Ren and Slade. They all made an impression on me but Snow probably made the biggest difference to these four.
The Shadows and Snow make an awesome team, with her possibly being the Oracle and restoring her mother's planet and balance to the universe. Absolutely awesome and pretty well paced as a Standalone book in this series. Bring on the next fairy tale twist!
Snow and the Shadows is a sci-fi romance retelling that puts a sexy alien reverse harem twist on the traditional fairytale. Instead of being suitable for children this is an adult only romance with plenty of heat and chemistry between the strong heroine, a slave named Snow and seven Roteran Shadow Warriors that are drawn to her. This book is packed full of action, suspense and romance as our characters adventure across the galaxy in order to save Snow from her evil step-mother the Queen.
Snow and the Shadows is obviously inspired by the original fairytale, sharing many of the well know aspects of the tale but also willing to break new ground to enhance and further the story. Snow is a strong female character, hardened to be a fighter by a life of adversity yet is still compassionate in nature. I loved the thought behind the Roteran Shadow and Guardians and the way that they hold past warriors souls as it was both original and played such a beautiful and pivitole role in the relationships between characters. Cara Carnes is a new to me author and there are many aspects that I liked about her worldbuilding and character development that will keep me coming back for more.
Snow and the Shadow is a fast paced sci-fi romance filled with adventure, mystery and twists and secrets that will keep you wanting to know more. It is a great read for science fiction readers old and new as this reverse harem retelling of Snow White transcends genres and I would recommend it for anyone who enjoys a nice heartwarming romance with a happily ever after.

Snow’s link to the Cosmos is a threat, one that can no longer be tolerated if her stepmother intends to win the war and rule the Intergalactic Alliance. Their orders are clear—either execute her or deposit her on one of the slaver colonies to be sold. They’d sworn to remain neutral during the War, but all bets are off now that Snow’s life hangs in the balance.
Heather's Notes It is very annoying to have to write a review twice. This book is marked book one of the Roteran Shadow series, unfortunately there is no book 2. Also Goodreads, let me write an entire review and then tells me I can't post post it because the book is no longer part of the catalogue. They should have done that first. Anyway, my review. I liked the book for the most part. It was a good story. However, the RH part really needed work. There was very little heat or steamy parts, and she was only with 1 person at a time, which we didn't even see (except one), they just talked about it.
I've been looking forward to this series for quite some time now and am glad it's turning out to be just as good as I hoped. Snow's story starts out a bit desolate and seeming as though all hope is lost, but her Shadows supported her more than anyone could ever expect.
I loved how they each had their own specific personalities, especially the grumpy one. It's always so great to see the "mean" one trying to fight what the others have already discovered. They were lost from the start. I enjoyed seeing them get to know each other and how the spirits responded to her was really amazing. I liked that in spite of their deadly ferocity and how dangerous everyone saw the guys, they were still loving and caring and wanted to be loved in return just like everyone else.
Snow's strength and character really stood out perfectly. With so many strong men and personalities, she was still a resounding force. She was a lovely character and always went above what was expected of her, especially in the scene when she firs the the Guardians.
I really enjoyed this book and hoe that the ones that follow are just as good.

I was given a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review and this is it. Oh MY GOD!!! I loved loved loved loved this book and i need more!!! Such an amazing story so genuine so fresh so hot and fun and amazing!
I have read many adaptations of Snow White but this one is by far my favorite.
Snow is the daughter of a slave and a king. The current Queen, her stepmother, wants her gone, dead in fact. The Shadows of Roteran were not having any of that and helped Snow disguise the fact she can in fact control the energy within the well. Then they claim a boon for their wasted time. Her father came up with the terms. She battles the guards, if she wins, the Shadows get her to use, then kill and send the proof to Queen Vilma.
There is far more to the Shadows than anyone knows, and some of that is shown when they honor her fallen guards.
I love the way this story slowly winds it's twisted tale. The patient way the seven shadows wait for her to realize each piece of them as the attraction builds steadily.
Awesome world building and I loved all the heroes and the couple of heroines. Snow and her Shadows are perfectly matched. I can't wait to read their next adventure.
Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. Most of us grow up with it, and it’s been retold quite a bit. I mean, it’s even been made into it’s own TV series, in a roundabout way. So, to pick this story to retell could have been quite a dangerous choice. I love retellings, though, and Snow White with a Sci-Fi twist seemed interesting, so I decided to give it a chance, not having read this author before. Having read it, I am so, so glad that I gave this story a chance. This was a brilliant story, and more so, unexpected. It’s Snow White in a way that I’ve never seen before (or seen done successfully, anyway), and the author took what could have been a really tricky tale and gave it a proper makeover. I certainly like to see a princess that doesn’t really need saving. It was a incredible standalone novel, and I sort of wish there was more to the story. Maybe one day.
Bad-ass heroine alert! Snow is the exact type of heroine I eagerly look forward to! Despite all the bad she has experienced, she keeps her head up and uses intellect to dictate her actions instead of emotion. When not using her intellect to fight, she's also super handy with a blade and more than a match for her harem of deadly warriors.
I loved the entire build up to Snow becoming a leader. The loyalty feels so genuine and well-earned. It was so nice to see her forming strong bonds with other outside of her own guys. I kind of wish it was longer simply to explore those bonds and strengthen her relationship with her supporters.
My only complaint is the whole Oracle/summoner revelation at the end. It felt slightly rushed and like there should have been more depth.
With an abundance of childhood story retellings going on out there I must admit I was a little skeptical about reading this book, but boy am I glad I did! Once I started I didn't want to stop. I don't know how Cara Carnes did it, but she was able to keep the basic gist of Snow White & The Seven Dwarves, but totally remake the story into her own! This book is great in that we have angsty buildup in character relationships, kickass action scenes, and some really romantic gestures all throughout! Love, love, love this book!
** I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author for review consideration **
One female, raised as a bastard slave, and seven interstellar assassins hired to get rid of her .... the perfect groundwork for this steamy reverse harem! This story line has intrigue, life and death situations, sizzling sexual chemistry, surprise romance, plenty of action, surprise developments and extrasensory abilities - all in a sci-fi setting. The character development for all the individuals makes for great interaction & emotional advancement. Top all of that off with suburb writing and that makes Snow and the Shadows a 5-star read! This is the 1st book of author Cara Carnes I have read, and I'm going straight back to grab the first book in this Once Upon a Harem series! I highly recommend this for all reverse harem/menage lovers, as well as sci-fi lovers!
Omg! I was not sure what to expect when I read the blurb but holes moley I did not expect to fall in love with the story as much as I did!
Well written and an amazing storyline glued me to the page and held me captive until the last word was read. The characters are brilliant, Snow is my kind of heroine, Strong and fiesty but with plenty of humility and softness and shadows! Whew I mean they are hot and big virile makes but each had his own unique personality and brIngs a plethora of feelings and attributes to the story
The story is exciting all the way through, moments of danger and excitement interspersed with Romance and steam, I absolutely loved this story and will be reading it again many times over
This book was amazing! I love, love, loved the sci-fi magic twist, every single one of the characters, and the whole story in general! Snow was an awesome, kickass character who I loved every step of the way. She wasn't perfect, but she was pretty darn great. And all her Shadows were amazing as well. I really felt like I got to know them, a rarity in RH books, and that was super cool. I liked all of them, and I loved them and Snow together. As to the plot of the book itself, it was very, very fabulous. It was exciting, endearing, deadly, beautiful, kickass, and altogether wonderful. There were twists and turns I didn't see coming and really enjoyed. Overall, this book was a masterpiece, and I highly recommend it to anyone who loves RH, science fiction, fantasy, and epic amazing stories.
Snow cavell was born a slave to the king cavell. It was said he was her daughter but after the death of her mother. His slave. He banished her to a ship called the pardox for the last 10 years. A rundown ship with 3 guards and a nanny. Until he married a evil queen who had her guards and nanny killed then gave her to the seven shadows to be killed or sold as a slave. The shadows are the most feared Assassins in the galaxies. They had sworn to stay neutral until Snow's life was in danger and she was in thier hands. Then all bets were off. She was the one they had been looking for. The Oracle. Wow what a story! Full of action, drama, intrigue, suspense, betrayal, mystery and so much more. It's a book that has to be read I can't tell you about it ! It's a reverse harem story with an amazing adventure. Voluntarily reviewed a copy and I honestly loved it.
This is a well written, entertaining interpretation of the childhood tale we all know so well. This version however, set in an intergalactic universe is strictly for adults. This story is engaging and flows smoothly with some very clever character tweaks among the seven Shadows and with Snow herself – a badass warrior with hidden healing talents. I especially liked the premise of ‘salvaging’ the souls of fallen warriors. Given that the story is set in a time of war, I would have liked more action – especially considering the particular skill-set of the characters. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
That was a fascinating spin on Snow White! So, this story is about a slave girl, named Snow, who is the bastard daughter of the Skelor king, he has joined forces with the Crunan queen, who is now Snow's evil stepmother, to take over the galaxy. In steps the 7 warriors/assassins that promise the evil queen that they will get rid of Snow then off starts her adventure of finding out who she truly is and what her 7 warriors truly mean to her. I really enjoyed the story it was full of adventure and magic but I didn't really feel the reverse harem aspect, it was more like snow had individual relationships with her men then a relationship as a whole.
This series is showing to be very entertaining and filled with heat. This one as the proceeding one takes and twists another tale in a way you would not have imagined it and filled it with reading goodness. Snow is one that will take you along with the Shadows through this having given you a escape that will filled to the brim with adventure and leave you breathless. They are a force to reckon with but not as big of one as Snow if things go right which the reader finds out. This is only the second time in reading this author and she kept me engaged with the story with the fast pace.
This is a great read. I really liked Snow. She had a miserable childhood with few joys but it has made her appreciate those few people in her life that have supported her. When her new stepmother wants her gone, she has to rely on these mysterious warriors that say they will protect her.
The Shadows are such interesting men. I really liked learning about each of them. They have a huge burden placed on them due to their role. They make the perfect mates for Snow.
