A perfect graduation gift! The possibilities are endless in Dr. Seuss's classic Beginner Book!
Young readers will delight in Oh, the Thinks You Can Think! which celebrates the imagination and encourages young readers to think... about thinking! "Think left and think right and think low and think high. Oh, the Thinks you can think up if only you try."
Originally created by Dr. Seuss, Beginner Books encourage children to read all by themselves, with simple words and illustrations that give clues to their meaning. Combining brief and funny stories, easy words, catchy rhythm, and lively illustrations, Beginner Book are an ideal way to introduce the joys of reading to children!
With his unique combination of hilarious stories, zany pictures and riotous rhymes, Dr. Seuss has been delighting young children, and helping them learn to read for over fifty years. Creator of the wonderfully anarchic 'Cat in the Hat', and ranked among the world's top children's authors, Dr. Seuss is a global best-seller, with nearly half a billion books sold worldwide.
Theodor Seuss Geisel was born 2 March 1904 in Springfield, Massachusetts. He graduated Dartmouth College in 1925, and proceeded on to Oxford University with the intent of acquiring a doctorate in literature. At Oxford he met Helen Palmer, who he wed in 1927. He returned from Europe in 1927, and began working for a magazine called Judge, the leading humor magazine in America at the time, submitting both cartoons and humorous articles for them. Additionally, he was submitting cartoons to Life, Vanity Fair and Liberty. In some of his works, he'd made reference to an insecticide called Flit. These references gained notice, and led to a contract to draw comic ads for Flit. This association lasted 17 years, gained him national exposure, and coined the catchphrase "Quick, Henry, the Flit!"
In 1936 on the way to a vacation in Europe, listening to the rhythm of the ship's engines, he came up with And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street, which was then promptly rejected by the first 43 publishers he showed it to. Eventually in 1937 a friend published the book for him, and it went on to at least moderate success.
During World War II, Geisel joined the army and was sent to Hollywood. Captain Geisel would write for Frank Capra's Signal Corps Unit (for which he won the Legion of Merit) and do documentaries (he won Oscar's for Hitler Lives and Design for Death). He also created a cartoon called Gerald McBoing-Boing which also won him an Oscar.
In May of 1954, Life published a report concerning illiteracy among school children. The report said, among other things, that children were having trouble to read because their books were boring. This inspired Geisel's publisher, and prompted him to send Geisel a list of 400 words he felt were important, asked him to cut the list to 250 words (the publishers idea of how many words at one time a first grader could absorb), and write a book. Nine months later, Geisel, using 220 of the words given to him published The Cat in the Hat, which went on to instant success.
In 1960 Bennett Cerf bet Geisel $50 that he couldn't write an entire book using only fifty words. The result was Green Eggs and Ham. Cerf never paid the $50 from the bet.
Helen Palmer Geisel died in 1967. Theodor Geisel married Audrey Stone Diamond in 1968. Theodor Seuss Geisel died 24 September 1991.
We have three copies of this for some reason. My son likes listening to Dr. Seuss being read but this one hasn't seen much play lately. Until last night...
My son was diagnosed with autism a little over a year ago. He's speech delayed and hyperlexic, which means he can read at the level of a six or seven year old even though he just turned three. His speech is coming along but he's still about a year behind, I think.
So last night, Miles was going apeshit over his kid's show a little too close to bedtime so I shut everything off. I told him to get me a book and I'd read it. He's never responded to this before but he picked some piece of crap book. After that I read that one to him, he picked this.
Like I said, this book hasn't gotten much play lately but Miles read it out loud from cover to cover. There were some hugs after. How could I not give this book five stars after that?
I love, love, love Dr. Seuss. Always have and I think I always will.
Sadly, this book didn't live up to many of my other favorites. The rhymes weren't smooth (sometimes it didn't even rhyme). And while the "made-up" words were cute, they felt more like a way to make a rhyme than anything else.
I liked the illustrations, I *love* the idea, and parts of it did make me smile. But mostly it just felt like a rough draft.
Thankfully there are so many fantastically wonderful Seuss books out there, that there's plenty of his works to read before this one ;)
-ETA- Obviously plenty of others loved this book! So, perhaps it was just the mood I was in when I read it...?
A nice book to make kids think about imaginary stuff and somehow make them think out of the box. I read it for my niece and nephew and they are still asking questions on what is a moon, why think of 3 moons? Why not more or less? What is moon made of?and further questions leading to prove me wrong on insisting that we live on the surface of the earth!
Oh The Thinks You Can Think This one is kind of a follow on to (and a little less amazing than) One Fish Two Fish. But it is still fun – the graphics are amazing and Escherian.

‘There’s a Wocket in my Pocket’ (1974) en ‘’Oh, the Things you can think!’
There is no limit to what you can think up. Dr. Seuss explores the imagination and encourages the reader to push their creative mind to limitless heights.
This is another Dr. Seuss story I am unfamiliar with. It is inspirational. The book showcases Dr. Seuss' creative brilliance and originality in a way that touches directly on the reader's own creative mind.
From vivid imagery and conundrums to endless parades of his invented species, Dr. Seuss' words are as vibrant as his illustrations. His imagination is infectious.
Whether you're old or young or somewhere in-between, this book is a must-read. Particularly if you're stuck for ideas or lacking in motivation.
In accordance with the FTC, I would like to disclose that I borrowed this book. The opinions expressed are mine and no monetary compensation was offered to me by the author or publisher.
Dr. Seuss was always a favorite of mine as a child and now I’m sharing them with my daughter! The colors are great for little ones and the stories always fun!
The more I read of Dr. Seuss, the more I love him! I love the line, "Oh the thinks you can think up if you only try!" Though sometimes, it can get quite challenging to read with the tongue-twisting sentences. : )
"Oh, The Thinks You Can Think!" by award winning Dr. Seuss is a marvelous way to encourage students to embrace their creative side and stimulate their imagination.
"Oh, the THINKS you can think up if only you try! If you try, you can think up a GUFF going by."
"There are so many THINKS a Thinker can think! Would you dare yank a tooth of the RINK-RINKER-FINK?"
Dr. Seuss's style of writing is so brilliantly written for a child to interpret in their own way and think of their own ways to be creative by encouraging the colorful and bizarre thoughts of daydreaming and making fun and exciting new words up.
Dr. Seuss encourages learning new vocabulary by making it fun for children to grasp.
The illustrations are very cooky and and unique which is yet another stimulator to help readers young an old think and ponder outsider the box.
I really liked this book, but was kind of disappointed in the page that talked about 55 elephants having a drink. I counted only 34 elephants. Really made me think, though.
Read this last night 3/6 on a trip to Books and Co with my friend after eating at Cheesecake Factory. It's cute, but not what I thought. My favorite is still Oh, The Places You'll Go.
Having fun revisiting Dr. Seuss books. I started out by just listening to the audiobook Green Eggs and Ham and Other Servings of Dr. Seuss which is an audio collection of nine stories narrated by Jason Alexander, Michael McKean and David Hyde Pearce. All of the Dr. Seuss universe is an appeal to the readers creative thinking, but this story especially asks the reader to use her imagination. The illustrations accompanying the text are truly wonderful, but as I’ve pointed out about other books by Ted Geisel aka Dr. Seuss, listening to the audio tracks alone can also be a really fun exercise in letting your imagination run free. There’s a good reason why kids of all ages have enjoyed Dr. Seuss books from one generation to the next—they truly stand the test of time.
I love Dr Seuss - my kids loved Dr Seuss - and I’m sure that my grandchildren will love Dr Seuss. My younger daughter reading Green Eggs & Ham to her grandfather has become part of our family lore (let’s just say it was a particularly dramatic rendition). So I am likely biased heavily to enjoy this - it was one of the few that I did not remember reading and it has all the clever rhymes and colorful illustrations. It was a fun, fast read.
We get older and always want to be logical and claim “facts”... but buttsss.. It is said that “ Lady Luck favours he who tries”.. getting kids to think and imagine is what being a kid is all about. Einstein’s has clearly demonstrated the importance of always being a kid “ imagination is more important than knowledge”
This is another of my favorites from Dr. Seuss - to read and read and read again! How wonderful is it to have a book that encourages children to think and to think that there are SO MANY amazing things that they can think. It encourages creativity and unique and independent thought. Did I say I love it? Yes, I do!
A Beginner Book that’s catchy and fun, but if I hear the word “think” one more time I’m DONE!
I love ideas, but I hate thinking. My mind goes a million miles per minute, switching lanes constantly until I run myself empty and crash. So, reading a book, even if a Beginner Book, about thinking drives me a bit crazy.
i loved this one! a little book encouraging kids to daydream and use their imagination and just think. a lot of absurd scenarios and ideas and they don't always have to make sense, but that's how the children minds work.
"there are so many thinks that a thinker can think! oh, the thinks you can think!"
"Você pode pensar em pássaros. Não tem mistério. Você pode pensar sobre o azul ou pensar no amarelo... Você pode pensar no vermelho. Você pode pensar no rosa. E pensar em um cavalo a cavalgar. Ah, os pensamentos que você pode pensar!
