In her latest instalment of the Hunt for Reacher series, Diane Capri takes readers close to the elusive man’s family, or so we are led to believe. FBI Special Agent Kim Otto continues to track down Jack Reacher, following some leads up to a small town in New Hampshire. It’s here that she believes she can make some headway, as it appears to be a town full of Reachers. No one admits to knowing Jack Reacher or being a part of his immediate family, but Otto is not giving up. She’s honed her investigation on Reacher’s nephew, who is headed out to California to get some answers from the uncle no one seems to know. While he travels there, a Canadian couple who was intricately involved in a recent Jack Reacher sighting in Laconia, New Hampshire now holds onto a duffle bag that could bring them much trouble. With the rightful owners ready to shed blood in order to get what they feel belongs to them, Otto will have to keep an eye out for trouble while also looking for the man who has continually been one step ahead of her. With a new partner and her old one offering nuggets of wisdom, Kim Otto will have to work quickly or face another dead-end situation. A great addition to the Hunt for Reacher series, permitting Capri to build on some of the most intense Reacher work that Lee Child wrote not long ago. Recommended for series fans, as well as the reader who enjoys a quick read that packs quite the punch.

I have long loved anything Reacher, so when I stumbled upon this series, I am eager to see how it would all tie in. While Capri loosely hints at the benefits of reader the associated Lee Child work alongside her own, I enjoy going at it alone and doing by best to make sense of everything. Capri offers some wonderful characters and delves deeper into some of the cases that appear in Jack Reacher novels. Kim Otto has grown tremendously in this piece, coming into her own and finding ways to run the investigation effectively, even when she’s paired up with a new partner. Others do well in their participation of the story, sometimes adding to the initial introduction they received from Lee Child, while others make their mark for the first time. The story moves quickly and leaves little time for pandering around, as there is much to accomplish in short order. Capri has honed her skills and shows that she is not only in-tune with her close friend, Lee Child, but is able to complement his work and provide a deeper look into some of the central characters who may offer valuable insight into finding Jack Reacher!

Kudos, Madam Capri, for another wonderful addition to the series. I am eager to see if Otto will ever catch Reacher, or if this is a game of cat and mouse destined never to end.

After reading a book, I sometimes wonder what happened later to some of the characters. Apparently, so does Diane Capri. In this story about FBI Special Agent Kim Otto’s hunt for Reacher, she creates some new characters and extends the story of what happened to a couple of the characters (Patty Sundstrom and Shorty Fleck) from Lee Child’s Past Tense and sets really bad guy Desmond Trevor after them.

I might have liked the book more if I hadn’t read it out of order (it’s #8) and I was occasionally confused about some of the characters (What’s with the Boss eavesdropping on conversations and knowing exactly where Otto is and what she is doing?) that I apparently would have known more about if I had read the previous books in the series.

I’m going to go read some of the previous books in the series, so I’ll be caught up when the next one comes out.

In the last 10 months I have read 41 stories featuring Jack Reacher. And I loved this story. This was the 11th story in the Hunt for Reacher Series that I have read in the last 8 weeks. I have read the whole series that has been published so far, and a twelfth book is announced for early next year. I have tried unsuccessfully to limit myself to one of these books a week. Which was the same pace that I read the 29 Jack Reacher Novels and short stories by Lee Child earlier this year. As I have now read all the published stories in this series I can confidently state that it is an excellent crime thriller series! And the deeper I get in this series the more I focus on the Lee Child novel it is linked to. This story relates to people and event in Past Tense. Which was my first Reacher story and began it all. And the main cast of characters in this volume are:

Kim L. Otto
Reggie Smithers
Charles Cooper
Lamont Finlay
Jake Reacher
Margaret Reacher
Desmond Trevor
Patty Sundstrom
Shorty Fleck
Carlos Gaspar
John Lawton

and
Jack Reacher

As stated, Past Tense, was my first encounter with Reacher in print. I can safely state that if this book had been that first read, I would have been just as hooked. And after finishing reading this series, I cannot help but imagine it as a series on HBO or Netflix. But the books are great reads. And the series changed a lot, the first few books covered days. This time the gap is months. And in this story, we meet again some of Reacher’s relatives.

Gaspar has been retired from the FBI for a few months and is working for a high end security team. Otto has not officially been assigned a new partner on the Reacher assignment. Gaspar has committed to helping Otto through the assignment, and his aide proves invaluable in this story. Agent Reggie Smithers make an appearance again. He plays chauffer for Otto. But his frustration at the secrets and misdirection is mounting. But the bulk of this story focuses around Jake Reacher, a young man who has finished college and is himself looking for Jack Reacher. He now believes that Joe Reacher was his father, and Jack is as close to Joe as he is going to get. Jake is an interesting character, he seems like a near perfect melding of Jack and Joe. His sense of justice and rightness. And his believe that he never loses.

And in this story Jack, Jake, Otto, Gaspar get drawn back into a story involving a bag full of cash, that is in the possession of Patty and Shorty. It is an excellent continuation of Past Tense. A great read in an excellent series.

If you like the Reacher books by Lee Child you have to try this series by Diane Capri. We follow FBI agent Kim Otto and her hunt for Reacher. She doesn't really know if he still is a good guy but she's leaning towards him having gone bad. This series only gets better with every book that comes. In this one Otto races across the country to find him and... well you have to read the book to find out how it goes. Me I love evrything Reacher so I follow this series and also the one Dan Ames is writing, sadly Scott Blade had to stop writing his series but you can still get copies I think.

Jake Reacher , recently graduated from college , goes on a road trip to California, maybe to find Jack Reacher. He runs into bad guys, who are trying to recover money that Jack Reacher took from them and gave to a couple so they could start a wind surfing store. FBI agent Otto meets up with and rides with Jake.

Jack of Spades - a review by Rosemary Kenny

The amazing author Lee Child's 23rd Jack Reacher masterpiece, Past Tense, saw Reacher return to his early hometown, Laconia, New Hampshire and dramatic events, such as Canadians Patty Sandstrom and Shorty Fleck being hunted by a maniacal billionaire, involved FBI Special Agent, Kim Otto once more.

A year after the couple disappeared and Reacher moved on, (as usual), Otto has been sent back to the same location, when it seems Reacher may have perished in the burned-out remains of a hotel. Her former partner Michael Fallon is officially retired from the FBI, causing her to work with a 'rookie' agent whom she's not sure about. Dramatic events follow, putting Otto in grave danger.

What danger is Kim Otto involved in this time round? How can she reach the only man she knows can handle the 'resurrection' of an old vendetta, sprung malignly to life once more? If her plan works, will Reacher be Otto's 'hero of the hour' to once more save her from terrible danger?

Read Queen of the Mystery Thriller Diane Capri's incredible Jack of Spades, Book 11 in the Hunt For Reacher series, that brings Reacher [plus those who love, (or hate) him and those to whom he's ever become close], to life in the wonderful new conclusion of the Reacher universe tribute legend - or is it?
Stranger things have happened! Get your copy as soon as possible - you won't be disappointed!

Coming hot on the heels of Lee Child's "Past Tense", Capri's Kim Otto is getting ever closer to finding Jack Reacher. There are a lot of questions in the first few chapters. Our beloved Gaspar has left the team and retired. Or has he? We see the straight-shooting, plain-talking Reggie Smithers teaming up with Otto...then again, maybe not! Can she trust him the way she trusted Gaspar? Her career and her life hang in the balance. And what about Reacher? Is he watching over her or stalking her? Does he even care? It's intriguing to see Otto struggle with what she hears about him from here questionable superior (he's a bad guy) and what she hears from the people Reacher leaves behind (his tactics may be edgy but he's a hero.) You can feel her hesitantly coming to a conclusion. This thread running through the series is only one element that keeps the suspense almost tangible.

The tale begins right where Past Tense fades, a mysterious hotel fire out in the middle of nowhere, New Hampshire, unidentified bodies (is one of them Reacher?), heartless billionaires traipsing around the forests and tough guys intimidating everyone they encounter, that is, until they run in to the diminutive Kim Otto. The billionaire's partner is missing and so is a relatively small amount of money. Why is that satchel full of cash so vitally important to a man who heads a vast financial empire? What is he willing to do to get it back?

The rest of the cast weighs in at times; the enigmatic Finley, the dubious Charles Cooper and several people we met in "Past Tense." All are tightly wound into the storyline and things move along quickly. Capri's uncanny knack for walking us through a chase scene or some hand to hand combat shines through in some key scenes.

Make no mistake, this book stands well on its own. If you haven't read the rest of the series and, if for some insane reason, you are unaware of Jack Reacher, Diane's thrill ride will make you want to read more. The plot is taut, the action fast and the characters well fleshed-out and getting more familiar with each installment.

I have to admit, I'm officially as excited about the next installment of the "Hunt for Reacher"
series as I am for the next Reacher novel.

I was given a pre-release copy of this book in return for an objective review. If I hadn't, I'd still be the first in line for the next book. I read a lot of suspense and thriller novels. Diane Capri is turning out some of the best!

Now...when do we get a movie?

Diane Capri’s latest thriller, JACK OF SPADES, begins where Lee Child’s PAST TENSE ended. FRI Agent, Kim Otto, is dispatched to Laconia, New Hampshire, by her boss to continue her quest to uncover information about Jack Reacher.

It’s February and a blizzard is headed to Laconia where an FBI investigation is underway at the site of Child’s novel. Otto discovers that there is another Reacher who more than resembles Jack. Jake Reacher has graduated from college and is taking the summer to travel west. His destination is Siesta Beach, California where he hopes to meet his supposed relative Jack.
The story moves fast and has some very dark and sinister characters who soon start a search of their own for Jake hoping to recover a black bag that contains evidence that could be helpful to Desmond Trevor, one of the bad guys.

The story begins in a blizzard and ends in a horrendous storm that rocks this tranquil coastal destination for fun and relaxation. Otto is put in great physical harm as are Jake and a Canadian couple we met in PAST TENSE.

Buy the book and take some vacation days to join the journey that Otto is on and take time to read carefully. The book is crammed with new facts, characters and unbelievable situations. You won’t regret the time you spend. I know I didn’t.

Jack of Spades - Best one yet

I would say I like this one the best so far in the series (and yes I’m reading in order). The introduction of some. We character’s definitely added to the validity of the story with the Reachers at the epicentre. The addition of Smithers was also ingenious and added an extra resource to poor Otto out their on her own. My only troubles were 1) keeping up with all the characters, I actually had to start taking notes so I wasn’t confused (which is easy to do). And 2), the added element of the weather being bad was probably not required in my viewpoint. Otto almost being swept away seemed a little far fetched or maybe overkill is the better word. If all that had played out without the weather as an additional element, it would have still been a good read. I thoroughly enjoy when Jack actually gets some airtime as well, helping here, saving there, it’s a good mix instead of just looking for him. Kudos Diane again. Looking forward to the next book.

What I'm learning to like about this series is the sense of adventure that the FBI agents experience as they try to reach Jack Reacher. This book follows up on Lee Child's last book in which two unwary Canadian tourists were being hunted for sport in New Hampshire. They were in the wrong place at the wrong time and came close to losing their lives. Now, two years later, they seem to be in a much better place. But evil, once again, comes into their lives and their lives are at risk once again. Will Jack Reacher come to their aid this time? Will Special Agent Kim Otto finally get to have a personal conversation, face-to-face, with Jack Reacher? You'll just have to read the book!

Another great read in this fascinating series! I love the character of Kim Otto and her hunt for Jack Reacher. Although officially retired, her former partner Gaspar is still working with her behind the scenes. Kim hasn’t gotten a new partner as of yet. In this latest book she is partially teamed up with an agent named Smithers, but she isn’t allowed to tell him of her true mission. Kim thinks she finally has an edge by discovering Jake, Jack’s nephew. Jake is on a cross country trip to find his uncle and is intercepted by Kim. I don’t know how Ms. Capri does it, but each book is better than the last! I can’t wait for the next one!

Diane has created the best story in her Hunt for Jack series. I am a big fan of both Lee Child and Diane but she has amazed me completely with Jack of Spades. I truly didn't know where she would go after her last episode but she has taken this series in a fantastic direction. Thrilling, unexpected twists guarantee a read it straight through experience. Thanks, Diane for keeping Gaspar in the mix as I love the interaction with Kim Otto. Every "Jack" fan is going to love this one.

Glimpse of Jack?

Agent Otto has lost her trusty sidekick, Agent Gaspar. He had been wounded in the action in Florida and had to retire but is still available for special needs. So Otto is on her own now. She is sent to New Hampshire then to San Diego hunting clues left by Reacher. Unfortunately either she is not given full information by her superiors by neglect or ignorance on their end. You simply can’t form an honest opinion without all the facts.

East coast to west coast, on the Reacher Road

Another entertaining story in the Hunt for Reacher saga. Capri cleverly introduces us to some new characters, creatively explores past events from another Child novel and delivers fast-paced, hard-hitting action. The car chase scene alone is worth the ticket.

There did seem to be a bit more language in this one, that and an excessive amount of characters wiping their faces with their palms.

Jack of Spades. Diane Capri

This is an extremely fast paced action thriller and an excellent read. Typical Diane Capri! Special FBI agent Otto is again tasked with a seemingly impossible assignment. This novel involves personal family members of Jack Reacher. His dead brothers son, Jock. A magnificent read! Enjoyed immensely

A very well written story in the "saga" of FBI Agent Otto in her search to find Jack Reacher. However, he always seems to be just out of reach. A page turner as the reader knows not what to expect next as there are many variables in this book. I liked it very much and would recommend this to all mystery readers.

If you run out of Lee Child's Jack Reacher books, pick up one of these. They are as fast paced and full of action. Hard to put down and show another side of the Reacher stories. This one was particularly fascinating for me as it added some info from the Past Tense novel by Child. Love these, going to read them all.

Gaspar is retired, and we get Smithers back. Smithers is a good character, but I just do not like Otto. She's not so much cunning as one dimensional. Reacher is now texting her? No thanks.
Curious to see Capri specifically revisit the hotel in Past Tense, but it's still mostly left unresolved. Don't think I liked any of the players in this one, and didn't care if they were mauled or drowned.

I read this earlier in the year. I honestly believe this series makes me enjoy the Reacher books more. The side stories as they weave on and out are fantastic. You can tell the author took time to go back to the source and then wrote out her story line. Could not be more pleased. Sorry, my book reviews are not Cliff notes.

Best in series so far

I haven't read Jack and Joe but I've read all the rest. This was by far the best.

I've read all of the Jack Reacher books which adds depth and deeper understanding of the characters Capri uses from those books.

I really enjoyed this book and roared right through the read. I couldn't put it down. Good pace and suspense.

Easily one of the most engaging of the eight books, so far.

The introduction of Jack was a surprise, and his movement was a bit clunky halfway across the country (and highly improbable!, but hey, that's fiction for ya!) however, he IS a "Reacher".

His decision to alter the course of his life could be interesting for the fans of Reacher.

I was a bit skeptical of how this novel would pan out. I’ve been a Reacher fan since the first book, Killing Floor.

I’ll have to read the first in this series now.

So are all of Capri's books going to have a serious storm that hinders visuals? I still enjoying reading the book but the storm at the end makes it 2 for 2, maybe I just read the two that have a storm. I will see as I do enjoy reading these Reacheresque stories here and there.
