plent of sets/combo books, the list was getting WAY too long so trying to shorten it a bit
The book examines the history of the ancient city of Ur which may (and may not) have been the city that the Biblical Abraham is connected with. It's a city that had a long history under a variety of different controlling interests, being abandoned around 500 BC. Archaeological work began in the early 1800's.
There was an early form of writing there which eventually evolved in the cuneiform writing which has told us much about various early civilizations. It's eventual downfall was caused by a variety of factors including climate change in the area which led to a drought along with various military conquests of the city.
The book also includes a bibliography, photos and notes on the photos.
Outside of the possible Biblical reference, though, the book doesn't really establish much of any reason for the reader to really care about the city and what went on there.
Early civilisations hold a particular interest for me, and this was a topic I knew next to nothing about. It felt informative, without going into too much detail. It also triggered my interest to read more about what was going on in that area, since so many other civilisations (other than the Sumerian one) were mentioned.
This is a great, easy-reading introduction to an important civilization in our history that is unknown to most people. Our knowledge of Ur is relatively new, because we only translated cuneiform in the eighteenth century, and it’s taking a while for scholarship to reach the public. I plan to read many more in this series.
I don’t understand the low ratings. It’s not a very long read, but it sticks to the basic facts of Ur, a Sumerian city that was eventually left during the Persian rule as the Euphrates River moved further east and the land dried up.
