We’re all in cages, counting ourselves lucky to be alive, let alone to still have our clothes on…I’m imagining scalpels and labs and sci-fi nightmare fuel until I’m taken away.Given as a gift to a grey-skinned alien with star-white hair, a scaled face, and the leathery wings of nothing Luras Darin. Now I have to convince him, from the confines of this stupid white birdcage, that I’m not just some stupid animal so I can get out and find a way home.I’m learning the language from scratch, but it doesn’t look like speaking will be enough…Until suddenly it is, and I show him what humans can do when they’re alone in a dark room. This is a full-length novel with an HEA. Adults only!
Born and raised near Pacific Grove in California, where only about 15000 souls live, Hollie found her passion in writing since she was just nine. She would write odd short stories about fantastic beings or plays she would enact with her friends, where she was always captured by some sort of beast. In these stories, there was no Prince Charming, only dragons and werewolves that were both scary and fascinating.
As she grew older she dwelled into more adult topics. She learned about the fun and fire of steamy romance novels, where the peculiar traits of her favorite characters made them dangerously alluring, physically and psychologically. Today these characters are like people inside her head. They that won't leave her alone until she gives them life. And even though she is the only one writing, Fifty* is always there to assist with inspiration.
*Mom's girl. Probably the brattiest chihuahua ever.
So...yeah...it was on KU and the blurb sounded interesting. A few things I just wasn’t feeling...the most being the main character was supposed to be in high school, but was this super smart chemistry person and knows all of this stuff. Like...is this in the future where high schoolers are like college kid smart? Plus the sex just seemed icky because SHE’S STILL IN HIGH SCHOOL!! And don’t ever use the word “boob” when writing a sex scene. Just...no...don’t. Plus she was in this big cage for weeks, but never once explained how she got food or went to the bathroom. Girl talked about all this other day to day stuff, but not those two pretty big things. Like...did they just put paper down or give her a bucket? I was so distracted wondering where she pooped and if she ever got to bathe. If you’re gonna write a book about treating people like animals then that’s a big part of that. Just saying. Overall the story was interesting and very descriptive, but Brittany sounded like an adult one minute and a teenager the next. If you have KU and you have time to kill and want to read something a might make you chuckle (not necessarily intentionally) then go for it. I would have liked it better and probably given it more stars if she 1. wasn’t in high school and 2. the word boob was not in here at all.
So let's begin with the fact that this an abduction Scifi-Erotica with a pinch of romance. Very little to none romance if I have to be specific. That being said... This book had a lot of "wtf" moments in which I had a hard time accepting facts. To submerge me into a story, some of the developing events have to be coherent or interesting. It was a fun ridiculous ride though, that I can't deny. The hero was a mysterious powerful lord, alien enough but sort of confusing at times. The heroine was a joy to read, but she was over the top at some points, that it turned her from a mentally stable and smart woman. To psychic know it all. Which made her a robot not a human in a sense. It's like she's on to everything and just gets over everything fairly easily. She has no faults nor difficulties. A young mary sue, without feelings. And though the relationship is slowly built up. It moves too quickly in the sense of resolving issues and plot points.
That's the main issue here. I think that the heroine resolves her issues so quickly, even the language barrier as a prodigy of the human race. Losing essential factors of being human sentient being on the way. And that's a very fine line which could work if the author had more time or pages to develop her characters in a way we can accept them. I mean it was a good formula but needed more time and coherence. I mean even the guy from Stargate had to study various languages for years to make sense of an alien language. The language barrier in sci-fi is a big issue. For most authors, there's a fast resolution: *Some technology to get details out of the way. *Acquiring knowledge or learning. (Option two is feasible with background and development.) Also, language isn't the only detail that makes a being sentient, which is something the author delved into. I appreciated that. In the end, the story is so rushed and poorly developed, that turns it into empty smut when the author clearly had the intention of making a good story and a likable intelligent heroine. So this is a 2.5 for me. And at some points a 3. Not memorable but fun. So there be my thoughts on it.
I had some serious problems with this book, but first. the good: I like the story line, very refreshing in a way and I like how the H was able and willing to change his ways and the ways of his people to recognize humans as a sentient species. The bad: I hated the h, I didn’t like the fact that she was teenager, and as some teenager, she was selfish and self-centered, when she was rescued and sent back to earth, she never give another thought to our H, not even once; it felt like, for her, he was just a hookup that overstay his welcome. Not a lot of romance. The two stars are for Darin and the overall story.

Okay, so here's the deal. The premise of the book had me hooked but the first 20% was a bunch of science mumbo jumbo that bored me to tears and then Brittany learned the language, said about 15 words to Darin and then wham bam sex...a fight...more delerious science..I'm done. Sorry but not my idea of a good book.
DNF @ 62%. No idea what the h looks like. There is hardly any interaction with the H/h in the first 50% of the book but once the doctor proves she’s intelligent H says I’m sorry and they “bone”. Just weird. Choppy dialogue and I just give up.
This is one of the best sci fi romances I have ever read. If you like your heroines feisty and whip smart and your love stories well written without any cheesy tropes then you must absolutely read this book. I can’t wait to see what else this author has written.
I received this book as an advanced copy and I am going to give you a fair and honest review and a snippet of what I read to either entice you to read the book or it could turn you off but I hope it does because I really like the book.
Hollie has a way of writing the most unusual books. Her plots are so much different for anything I have come across and so refreshing. I think that her books are going to be amazing popular to come up with such complex plots and still come away with a great ending.
Brittney Lou and her class mates were selected from all of the senior of the High School to go to the space station on one of Neptune's moon. They were trying to discover some sort of source of life there and sending from the camps down below chips up to the station above. Her class would be taking back with them a box full of these chips to translate out into scientific information. The ship that they were going on would take the an hour to arrive but in actual time it would seem like just minutes. Just as they came out of hyper space they see yet another ship much, much larger than anything that they have ever seen before. It cut a hole into their ship and the next thing Brittney knew she was waking up in a cart in almost total darkness, the only other person there that answered her call was Johnathan. Unfortunately it was not long before a door opened with two large beings coming in and taking him away crate and all and then she was alone.
The next time that the door open a fat squatty looking alien came in with the two large beings and pointed towards her. The took her down and onto a smaller transport ship to a different planet that she had ever seen before. She was then taken to a very strange look black sleek tall and slender structure. It is there that she meets Lord Darin but the only problem was he didn’t know her as an intelligent being everyone on the planet considered themselves the only intelligence in all of the universes. She was his pet that he kept in a cage in his library a place that he held most of his business meetings. She was very slowly picking up on the language but not enough so that it didn’t look like she was parroting everyone. That is up until the night that she helped to save the woman that worked for the Lord from being raped from a late night visitor and at the end of it all she conversed with him a little. He then took her to a doctor that could actually speak English and her world changed from there. Now it was up to her to rescue her fellow students; with the help of Lord Darin. Now is she going to be able to get this accomplished? What about her feelings for Lord Darin?
Contains subject matter that may be a trigger or offensive to some including: adult language throughout, semi-steamy intimate scenes, and violence (murder, kidnapping, slavery of various species including humans, attempted murder, attempted rape, and fighting). If any of these situations are a trigger, or offensive to you, then this may not be the story for you.
For an universe to be created from scratch, this story kept me engaged with some parts that made me laugh out loud funny or made me think a different way about a few concepts, but there were also a couple of oversights. For instance, Brittany was kept in a cage that was described in detail (imagine oversized bird catch complete with hanging feathers from the center of the ceiling), but where did she go to the restroom? This cage was kept in the library on display 24/7 for Luras Darin, his staff, and visitors, she wasn't let out for a long period of time, and it didn't contain a restroom ... just saying. I will also add that this wasn't an overly romantic story with sizzling chemistry between Darin and Brittany in the beginning, but it does build throughout the story.
Here is a highlevel overview of how the story begins:
Brittany and 11 others from her high school are winners of a raffle that will take them to Neptune to see the space station and what is happening on the planet (the way Hollie Hutchins describes this and what the kidnapped humans endured is inspired). After they travel, but before they can get off the space ship, they are attacked and kidnapped by aliens. On the ship they are stored in boxes (think oversized pet carriers) and examined. Brittany is then gifted to a High Lord (or something similar) as a pet. She is placed inside a large cage in front of the windows in the library. She has a bed, chair, etc. but is not spoken to or given anything to really do, so she begins to learn their language. This is a huge surprise to quite a few, but especially Lucas Darin who takes her to a doctor to have her tested.
I am going to stop there so I don't accidentally provide a spoiler or twist, but I must say that the way Hollie uses and turns animal testing and relates it to this story is inspired. If I wasn't already against a practice like this, I would definitely be after reading.
Brittany was with a group of high school seniors who had signed up in a raffle to win a trip to Jupiter and see what Galix and NASA had up there. The winners were to bring the accumulated information back to Earth to be analyzed. With four chaperones they're travelling in a tube faster than the speed of light. Upon arrival they're immediately attacked by an alien spacecraft, their ship opened like a can of soup, seemingly zapped into unconsciousness and awoke to find themselves in individual cages. Rather interesting concept on the outside of things looking in, don't you think? Now, I've read the previous reviews and have to say this up front. THIS IS A FANTASY ROMANCE!!! THIS IS NOT NON-FICTION!!! So, if you try to apply the same rule to this genre, you're going to be disappointed. Hollie Hutchins has done a great job with world building in this storyline. Since the title is "A pet for Lord Darin," we specifically follow Brittany's path during this adventure. And that is what it is, and adventure. All the ramblings, questions, thoughts and indignations of youth are portrayed with clarity. And when Lord Dorin comes to realize humans are not exotic pets to be caged you can literally feel his sorrow and how humble it has made him. So for those of you who didn't finish this book, I'm sorry you missed the best part. The part that actually turned into a beautiful, heartfelt romance. The part where they became a team. I'm glad I didn't go by previous reviews or I'd have missed it.
I went on to this story not expecting much but I was pleasantly surprised. The story doesn't focus on the romance so much as the political and social conflict of introducing another sentient species to a planet that believes they are the only sentient species out there. Brittany is a highscholer going on a field trip of a sort for super intelligent kids to space. They are kidnapped and sold as pets to the Sarchans an alien race that believes they are the only sentient species. Brittany is bough as an apology gift of sorts to head smuggler of the country. I really liked the heroine she was smart not only in academics but also street smart. She really did save Earth from more kidnnaping attempts by the Sarchans and instead opened communication between the two species. My only issue with the book and this personal preference but I wish we could get the story from the hero's point of view but that is as I said personal preference and in my opinion the sex scence happened a bit too early. Again I repeat this is not heavy in the romance department but it is a very enjoyable story and I am looking forward to more from this story.

Don’t expect much romance on this book. This a long journey of a woman into learning an alien language than anything else. Everything including romance is just a side note and in passing. So if your into boring stuff yeah.. read this. And I don’t even know how Darin and Brittany develop feelings for each other when they don’t talk at all, and when they did do, like one time have a decent conversation, suddenly Darin has this intense feeling for Brittany and they did the dirty. Brittany on the other hand just seems to go with a flow to scratch some sort of itch, but the author never develop Brittany’s romantic feeling for Darin. All I can say is the characters were not developed properly, specially Darin. I can not reconcile the Darin at the start of the book and the Darin that interacts with Brittany. It’s a 2.5 for me... oh and since I skipped about 40% of the pages I didn’t even realized she was in high school. She sounded too old to me with the way she see things. But author come on! High school students? Oh one more thing. Brittany was in a cage for a long time and the logistics of hygiene have not even been discussed. It will be a long while before I come pick this authors book again.
Another book to put in my abandoned and forgotten category.
At first it started out really great it was rolling fast I was liking the idea of the plot line and romance and I also really liked the main character but as I kept reading it just kept going on longer and longer and loooooonger without actually showing who her alien guy would be without really change in plot except suddenly meeting "nice" aliens that don't believe in slavery anymore. This book overall sucked it went through most of the book with no real changes except her in a cage talking about what's happening outside of the cage which is frankly very boring and when she finally does meet other alien she meet so many that you never really see who her romantic alien partner will be by the third quarter of the book I was officially done with the book. I seriously read almost 3/4 way of the book and had no idea who the leading man was(which is weird because it's an alien romance book) by that time I just felt like I had wasted my time reading this book.
Overall I hated this book it was a waste of time and I do not plan on finishing it anytime soon (or ever)
No I would not read more books by this author. No I would not recommend this book to anybody seriously do not read it
So I usually don't leave reviews but this book kinda needs it, Don't get me wrong its not a bad read but I had a few issues. One being Brittany is in high school and has a scientist level of intelligence, there would be times when Brittany was thinking or talking to her self and I couldn't follow it. I didn't know the scientific terms and it kinda made my head hurt a little. She had had these scientific thoughts a good bit through out the book. Then add into the fact she in high school 17/18 yrs old and having sex with an alien, that's kinda eh to me. I fully understand that teenagers have sex its just not what I want to read. A big thing is I really I would have liked to have known what Darin was thinking or feeling, this whole book is from her perspective. I feel like not knowing what is going on in his head that we're missing a portion of the story. All of this to the side it was a pretty good book.
This book popped up as one of those "big brother is spying on you" pop up ads on Facebook. The premise sounded ok, plus it was available on Kindle Unlimited so why not. I was pleasantly surprised. I mean yeah, the age of the main character was problematic (should have been 19 or something). The "love story" was definitely contrived (there is little to no interaction and once the main characters "do it" [still not sure how it worked, but ok] Darin gets so much more chatty... clearly a work of fiction). And the ending wraps up way to cleanly (sure earth will do trade deals with a planet that kidnapped a bunch of high school students because they believe they are a dominant race and enslave everyone, because one girl says so...)... But it overall wasn't horrible. I read it in a few hours, this is definitely a "beach read" or a just relax and escape read. Its not a literary masterpiece, but it wasn't horrible.
Winning a trip to Neptune is one great thing for a class of High School seniors. Getting captured in space by unknown aliens 👽is entirely something else! Brittany💃💋 and sixteen other kids, plus four adults find themselves in cages as prisoners in a huge alien vessel.
The aliens👽 are Sarchans, and the book mostly follows the story of Brittany💃💕. She ends up as a pet🐕 for a dragon🐲🍆🌋 lord, Darin.
The Sarchans don't realize she is intelligent, until she begins speaking in their language. Darin🐲🍆🌋 demolishes the cage she was kept in and brings a doctor to help her become fluent in Sarchan.
Finally, Darin🐲🍆🌋 realizes she is more than a pet 🐕, he has feelings for her.
ARC Received from Booksprout. I also got the book with KU.
Interesting, unique and we'll written Adult Alpha Alien Abduction novel!
I read less than a dozen pages. I couldn't take it anymore. First of all, high school kids? Second, for 4 pages the only discussion revolves around "Would you bone an alien?" Yeah, nope. Just nope. If this is supposed to show how much more mature the h is than the rest of the characters you have to put something in there that shows she actually is. An inner monologue, jumping into the conversation to derail it, leading it to higher ground, something. Anything. I saw some of the reviews before I grabbed in KU and debated borrowing it. But, I decided to branch out with a new author and give it a try. There's always some naysayers in reviews, even if the book seems magical to you, so I try to keep an open mind. I couldn't. I wave the white flag and surrender this book back to KU. Sorry. Maybe if I see it gets an editing update I'll try again.
This book started out strong and really pulled my interest in with the parallels of how humans see animals and how the aliens saw the humans. When it started to lose me was the romance. First, the MC is still in high school so that felt a little weird. And second there isn’t much build up to it. The male MC goes from pretty much ignoring her to kissing her and it’s really jarring. Like oh, we’re kissing now? A second ago he thought she had the intelligence of a dog. I don’t want to be too harsh, I did enjoy reading this. It has an interesting premise but I felt like it could have been built on more. I would have liked to know more about the main character and who she is besides chemistry prodigy, and I think aspects of the alien world could have been more flushed out. I do applaud the author on creating an alien language, that takes a lot of thought.

Interesting read. I loved the description of the Lord Darin. Words used were interesting and did give me a picture of a handsome but scary looking alien. Enjoyed the flow of the story as well as each character that was described. Very interesting plot. Feels almost like my life. Taken from home and set up in a foreign place does unsettle one. When given the opportunity one can survive and prosper if one is willing. This is exactly how Brittany set out with her predicament. When tested to the limit, one will learn and achieve more to survive and this is what she did. Learnt their language and learnt to understand that the alien race had no idea what "human" was all about.

The story was okay. It took a really long time to get into, and the different language of the aliens made it hard to understand what was happening. Once the main character learned to speak the alien language it was much easier to follow along and it became enjoyable to read. There were still many confusing things. one being that the main character has sex with the dragon. Prior to that, Any reference to the Dragon's appearance was unappealing so it's confusing as to why she would be with him physically. That being said, the first time they where Intimate the writing was very spot on as to what it would be like to be with someone from a different species / planet.

This sci-fi/paranormal book by Hollie Hutchins was a complete and total joy to read from start to finish. I really enjoyed the sassy tone of the story as told from the main character's viewpoint as she goes from kidnapped and transported to another galaxy far far away (couldn't resist) to understanding and even sympathy for her captures. Instead of the usual XXX sex details Hollie is noted for, I would give this one a R rating as it was still fun and enjoyable, but definitely not too heavy on the description details. This is a somewhat late voluntary review of an Advanced Reader Copy of this book from Booksprout.
I liked the thought that went into this book but to me it was just a bit out there. Teenagers can be brillant, but not with life experiences at 17. Would have worked out better with someone slightly older. This is fiction and I'll let it slide. A bit too long to get the point across in some areas. At some point the story could be told in English without the translation. I would have liked to get to know Darin and the Doctor better. Seems we just get tidbits to keep our interest. The scene with the maid and getting drunk seems unnecessary. All in all this was a good book, yet long. Kept me interested enough to read the whole thing.
First let me state, I received an Advance Reader Copy, (ARC), but this in no way influences my review. I always leave an honest review.
Excellent story. Brittany is a smart college student and gets a chance to travel to Neptune. Unfortunately she and her fellow students are kidnapped and sold as pets to an alien species who don't believe humans are sentient beings. Lord Darin is the alien who purchases her and soon finds out that she's a sentient being. I recommend this read. 5 Thumbs up.
Brittany is abducted from Earth and given to Luras Darin as a pet. She is even lock in a cage where she lives in his house. She slowly teachers herself their language in hopes of making them realize that she is a sentient being the same as them.
This was a good plot with decent characters (3 stars) but I found the writing choppy. Time and/or story line would jump forward with no tying to the previous scene. I spent a good bit of time rereading trying to see if I missed something to explain what was happening.
Wow! I think I held my breath through part of Brittany Lu’s journey. Spoken from her perspective, Brittany and her fellow high school classmates are given an opportunity to travel to Neptune for their study. Brittany is a chemist and her fellow classmates are life science, behavioral and other sciences. Their ship gets kidnapped and that is where the good stuff happens and jolts our leading lady into action. Easy to read and follow. One of the main traits I enjoy from this author is her research, knowledge and storytelling.
A prime example of different cultures being obstinate and thinking they are the most sentient beings. In our lives, there are a lot of people who feel the same way. It takes a lot of time being around them to know that no one is better than the other. There are bad people everywhere, no matter what or who they are. There are good ones too. You can also bring them together with patience, intelligence, love and understanding.
A group of senior high school students win a trip to Neptune but get abducted by another ship. One of them is Brittney who is given to Lord Luras Darin as his pet. Infact he keeps her in a cage in his office room which inturn helps her to learn the Sarchans Language. How Darin finds Brittney's abilities and how things change between them is the remaining plot, which as always perfectly given by Hollie.

This is a very well thought-out world. It’s like any story where someone is catapulted into a strange culture with a different language, and has to adapt— except aliens!! I really enjoyed Brittany and Darin’s story, their journey to love was complicated and fraught with more than the usual perils. But the affection and respect they show each other is marked. I’d love to read a series about their future adventures.
Brittany is bought as s pet by Drain. Darin is a dragon, who deals with illegal drugs and other activities. Brittany is determined to prove she is not a mindless pet. I like how she learns the language and proves to Darin she is not mindless. They are attracted to each other. There are elements of danger and romance.
Another great and fun romance by Hollie. Taken from her ship going to Neptune, she becomes a pet to an alien male. But if he is about to be surprised by his new little pet. I love how the main female character saves herself. And boy does she know how to put a person in their place.

I enjoy led the realistic aspect of oh holy crap what am I gonna do I've been kidnapped by aliens thing. I like that Tany started to try and use their language...because if you weren't being eaten, that's something you'd learn to do. Idk, I just really enjoyed this book.
