This is a fast passed western. This is my first experience with both the author and the narrator. I was impressed enough to look for more books by both.
The protagonist is 2nd Lieutenant Marcus Cavanaugh. He is fresh from West Point and arrives as Two Eagles of the Cheyenne has gone to war. The story takes place in 1868 in Eastern Colorado. The book is a standard Calvary against the Indians western story. The book is well written and is past paced. The story has lots of information about Army life in the middle 1800s. There is lots of action, but the book is too short to allow for much character development. The book was a great change of pace story. Looking forward to reading more books by Vaughan.
I read this an audiobook downloaded from Audible. The book is three hours and thirty-nine minutes. Clay Lomakaya does a good job narrating the book. Lomakaya is an actor and audiobook narrator.
I am not familiar with many Western novels except for Zane Grey. I picked up this book and I couldn’t put it down. Great story lines, good character descriptions and a great read. I recommend this book to everyone.
I have been addicted to Author Robert Vaughan for awhile and this book definitely falls into his best of the best category. There is a lot of camaraderie in this dramatic representation of our old American war heroes. Too, there is enough time to relax and enjoy the fruits of life as the military cranks up their assignments, and encounters the renegade throughout this classic masterpiece.
No problem awarding five stars to this descriptive story of our old western folklore. This story certainly reaches out and grabs you immediately and doesn't let you go long enough to really catch your breath before you are traveling with the U. S. Army in a full gallop once again! Mr. Vaughan has been in the business long enough that his selection of characters are always interesting and outstanding, regardless of their roles. Too, his extraordinary selection of storylines are unsurpassed throughout all of his great novels. This story is very touching, but has many moments of truly heartwarming adventures throughout all the exhilarating experiences involving Lt. Cavanaugh and his fine assortment of exciting adventures. Once the action begins there was very little time between each exciting episode to relax, but the anticipation certainly kept me glued to follow the Calvary charge once again. Most definitely recommend this book to everyone, as it will enlighten you to some of the adventures out forefathers incurred in the true old western endeavors. Although the story is fiction there are some surreal episodes that grabbed my undivided attention. I am anxiously awaiting the soon to be released Book 2!😂
When I started to read this book I was afraid this was just a thinly disguised telling of Custer's fight on the Washita around 1868. But I was pleasantly surprised when it was a different story altogether. One thing that makes a good story for me is character that seem to be cut from whole cloth not cardboard. So you get to liking them or not liking them because of their character. Now some of the character get very little story time, but you still get a feel for them. If you like western then grab a copy and be ready to hit the trail.
Author Robert Vaughan is known as a top Western wordslinger, and this first book in the Arrow and Sabre series shows him at the top of his game...The characters are engaging enough to make the reader anxious for their safety when they get into the thick of the action, which comes fast and often. A terrific read. I can't wait to get started on the next book in the series...
An RV Arrow and Saber Novel (1)/a New Officer/A First Battle/A Second Battle
RV has penned a western about a young Calvary officer, a recent graduate of the Military Academy, who is assigned to a fort in Colorado. His first engagenment is aboard a Stage coach where he coached the riders and others to fight an Indian attack. He reached New Yprk but was curious about how word had been heard all away across the Country. The is an excellent read for the genre.....DEHS
Fast moving. Unfortunately, there wasn't a lot of character development with the new recruits in Marcus' first command. A good story line, although I wish more would have been told about the people involved, not just the officers . Even with what I perceived as shortcomings, I enjoyed the book and will probably read more of Mr. Vaughan's western books.
The first in another great western series featuring the US Cavalry! Had the original paperback under Mr. Vaughan's pseudonym, G.A. Carrington, but hadn't read it. when the Kindle version came out, had to snag it. Great storytelling and description. Great characters and action. Looking forward to the second volume of Arrow and Saber!
This wa a quite interesting book. It was written very well. If you like to read stories about Native American people, tthen this is a book that you will enjoy readig.it is about the fighting over Native American land that the settlers felt was theirs.
If you want to read good historical fiction about a cavalry officer, I recommend Allan Mallinson's novels. Well researched and well written with depth and character development.
If you want to enjoy an adventurous tale of cavalry against Native Americans, I recommend John Ford's cavalry film trilogy with depth and character development.
Excellent Early Frontier Calvery vs. Indians! Vaughan artfully creates a realistic frontier scene with realistic characters that take readers back in time to the challenges and prejudices of "white men" and"redskins!" Very enjoyable and well worth the time to read it.

Vaughan has yet again displayed his progress for delivery a wonderful yarn. He also portrays the ludicrous nature of those times and how both the military worked and our genocide of the true native residents of this land.
Really good book. Reads very fast and keeps your attention. I loved the ending. Can’t wait to read the next book in the series. I received an advance copy for an honest review.
You will not get bogged down in this book. Action is constant and not forced. I enjoyed this one and look forward many more very good novels by an exceptional writer.
Pretty good story. A true depiction of the arrogance of some leaders. Grammar 101, when changing speakers, start a new paragraph. Gets confusing if you do not.
Our author has a good grasp of the difference between history written by the winners and history as best we can reconstruct it from accounts of those present
