The tale of love, passion, compassion and above all that celebrates humanity.
It’s a huge book so it took me a while to complete it. I will only superficially introduce you to the story because it’s not possible to discuss further because it will be long. The story started with Sridhar Verma. Sridhar was returning from US as his brother’s marriage was fixed. He was eager to meet them but his family isn’t. He came to know that his brother Murali Bhaiya died in an accident at the night of his wedding. And his bhabi survived. Suman survived. She didn’t want to ho back to her house because it’s tough being a widow who’s husband died at the night of wedding. Sridhar went to meet her then memories from the both side flooded. They used to date when they were in college. There are another few important characters such as Maheshwari Verma. Maheswari Verma the matriarch of the Verma family is proud of her legacy as a freedom fighter's sister. But her principles are questioned at every step when a girl walks into her family like a storm opening the secrets of the past. Sudhir Verma is the second son of the family. The book has been set up in mid nineties in Jaipur. Read the book to unfold everything. I felt that Maheshwari’s character will be stubborn in case of rituals and family traditions, but when she saw Sri-Suman blushing towards each other, and during when Vidhya mentioned about them, my opinion about her began to change. The book is divided i to sections. This is just a begging or introduction. I loved the plot. I liked how author started it as a family who might follow rigid tradition when Suman’s husband died but later on in development, she showed them as different than we expected. It’s perfect. It’s combination of love, drama, social norms, passion, etc. I loved the language and vocabulary used by the author. I liked all the twists and turns plotted. I liked the narration style of the author. It’s crisp and captivating. I enjoyed reading it. Recommended from my side.
"There are many women like me who are victims of traditions, women who are victims of crimes like rape and human trafficking and also guilty of crimes like robbery and murder. But unlike what the society thinks these women also have dreams. They want to be financially independent. If given a chance they also want a family."
✓When I came across this book, I read the title and thought that it's going to be some cliché arranged - marriage stories. However, my perception changed when I started reading this. This book has drama, love and a positive message for the readers. ✓The story revolves around mainly around the Verma family and the different characters in the Verma family. The story will give you a glimpse of progressive mindset and how old society principles, which have lost their meaning today, are still prevalent and have become oppressive. I really enjoyed reading this book. The characters and their situations are very realistic. There are few books which, when you complete them, leave a mark on your heart and your mind. This book was one of them for me. ✓The title of the book and the cover is very appropriate. I would also like to mention that I was very satisfied with the epilogue. The author has also provided the readers with a separate section, at the end of the book, wherein meaning of selective Hindi terms used in the story have been listed. The language is lucid. It is a delight for readers who are into drama, love and social message. However, I would not recommend this to the beginners because it's quite lengthy and has 540+ pages.
We pray women Goddesses, while the women in the regressive houses are treated cruelly in the name of traditions back in those days. Even now, it might happen in some families. We may not know. This book highlights that issue and get over with the help of Verma family.
The progressive Verma family has stand up together against who treats widows as inauspicious, who believes in old traditions and many other injustices.
Suman is Sridhar Verma's destiny. But destiny had other plans to play along and it made first by marrying Suman with Murali Verma, Sridhar's brother. Unfortunately, she become the widow bahu of Verma family on the wedding night itself. Being broken and crushed, Sridhar and Suman fight for their love to get the approval from the family. The Verma family somehow figures out their relationship and supports them. They even stand for each other to fight for justice and other societal issues.
Not only Suman and Sridhar, this book holds some backdrop stories for each and every characters that are involved.
What i liked: The character exploration was done well. How they deal with challenges and fights over it. All the characters played a major role and not left unnoticed. That's a great thing. Each relationship adds so much to the story. The author did her job and made sure everything in this book is detailed enough to picture easily what is happening throughout. When reading, it went in the right direction. I loved that aspect of the story. The author took care of her characters very well. They really brought life to the story with their different personalities with distint voices.
That satisfaction of reading a good book. I found myself being a part of Verma family. Highly recommended from my side❤
