This is another enjoyable police procedural from Jane Isaac, this one featuring a new character, family liaison officer Beth Chamberlain who I think is very likeable as a lead protagonist. The novel starts in a very exciting way with a hostage situation and a shooting and what unfolds reveals secrets and lies and nothing is what it seems.
The characters are well portrayed and I really like this police team especially DCI Freeman who is paternal and caring and DS Nick Geary is likeable too. Although the pacing of the novel is a bit erratic at times, it’s fast then slow, then it picks up again and so on, I think this is reflective of an actual police enquiry from what I’ve seen of documentaries featuring genuine cases. This gives the book a feel of authenticity. There are plenty of twists and turns and some revelations to satisfy fans of the genre. The climax is very good and tense and also surprising which I like.
Overall, a good, solid and well written read from Jane Isaac, I feel you are in safe hands with her books.

MY THOUGHTS: While I didn't struggle with The Other Woman, nor was I engaged by it. I found it difficult to connect with any of the characters, and failed to feel excited at any point during the read. Having said that, there is nothing that I can really criticise, either. This is the first book in the DC Beth Chamberlain series.
The plot is good, with plenty of red herrings, and a twist at the end that lifted it from a 2.5 star read to 3. This is a good quick read, ideal if you don't want to exercise the grey cells too vigorously.

I’ve been eagerly awaiting this authors new series.
After reading her previous series which I enjoyed I anticipate this authors future books to get my teeth into.
This one lived up to its title big time.
After He’s Gone.
Yes after he’s gone introduced us to DC Beth Chamberlain who was assigned to a family as a liaison officer.
Beth has guts and she also has a big heart.
A death, bodies piling up.
But even the dead had huge secrets as Beth was discovering.
I love how the author gives us not only insight to Beth doing her job but also as a person with a life outside her working environment.
There’s a love interest thrown in.
Great start to a good series.

AFTER HE’S GONE is the latest crime fiction novel by bestselling author Jane Isaac, and is her sixth novel, a new series, featuring Family Liaison Officer, DC Beth Chamberlain, published June 18, 2018. The second Beth Chamberlain novel will follow later in 2018. I am very familiar with this author as I have read the Detective Inspector Will Jackman Series, and really enjoyed them.
When Cameron Swift is gunned down outside his family home, DC Beth Chamberlain is assigned as Family Liaison Officer: a dual role that requires her to support the family, and also investigate them.
Beth is a strong gutsy character. She knows how to get the job done. I loved her character. We get to observe her character both professionally and privately. Beth’s boyfriend is her supervisor…living dangerously!
As the case unfolds and the body count climbs, Beth discovers that nothing is quite as it appears and everyone, it seems, has secrets.
Even the dead…
This first mystery book in a new series shows a promising future for many more to come.

This is the first book by Jane Isaac that I have read and I throughly enjoyed it. Will definitely be on the look out for more and definitely book two in this series.
Cameron Swift is murdered outside his family home whilst putting golf clubs in his car. DCI Beth Chamberlain is sent to the home to work with the family as the family liaison officer. As the investigation progresses the truth about the victim is slowly uncovered, causing the family to wonder if they really did know him at all.
A fantastic first book in what I hope will be a long series of great stories

The murder of Cameron Swift sets off a chain of events no one could see coming. He is gunned down while putting golf clubs in his truck by a man on a motorcycle.
DC Beth Chamberlain is assigned to assist Swift's family while investigating them at the same time. As the case unfolds, Beth finds that nothing is quite as it seems and everyone has secrets ... especially the dead man.
This is a new author to me and I was not at all disappointed with her writing. I liked the mystery of a man who was something different to each person who knew him. I could not help but feel empathy for his families, his children who seemed to be innocent victims. I loved the character of Beth ... she's feisty, and doing her best to show her bosses that she is exactly where she deserves to be.
I liked the mix of professional and private life for Beth. She has a younger sister and a young niece to help look after. Her sister hasn't always made sound decisions ... and she may be making the same mistake again. Beth's boyfriend, of sorts, is her supervisor. This is a big no-no, and they're trying to keep it quiet.
The mystery is quite good, the premise kept me turning page after page. The ending was well done and I sincerely hope Beth Chamberlain will be seen again in the near future.

This book could well be a cliché. A man is shot down and police discover not just one grieving partner, but two and neither knows about the other. It's a story line that has been told several times but it didn't detract from this book at all.
Cameron Swift is shot in his driveway, inside the house his fiancé Monika and their baby son Jakub and step son Oskar deal with the fall out. DC Beth Chamberlain is sent along as a trainee family liaison officer to support Monika. However, soon after Beth through work is made aware of a second partner Sara who lives two hours away with her daughters who are just six and four.
Cameron it appears, has lived a very duplicitous life, but what other secrets is he keeping and what is the fall out for these two women and their children.
The story kept me well hooked and I liked Beth as the central character who is dealing with her own personal issues. I have had this book sitting unread for some time and I am glad I finally got to read it. Happy to recommend.

Cameron Swift is shot dead outside his house in a quiet residential area early one Sunday morning, as he put his golf bag in the boot of the car. The biker assassin was gone before anyone saw him, leaving no trace, but not before he took the time to photograph Cameron’s body lying in a pool of blood. Soon afterwards an anonymous tweet appears showing the photo.
DC Beth Chamberlain is called in as part of the homicide team and given the position of Family Liaison Officer. Part of her job is to investigate Cameron’s family to try and discover why he was killed in such a terrible way. Beth and the team have little to work with initially, there seemed to be no possible motive for the murder, but there was more to Cameron Swift than was at first apparent. As more enquiries are made and the case unfolds gradually, the body count increases. Everyone seems to be hiding something, no-one more so than Cameron Swift.
The tense prologue and opening chapter get the story off to a terrific and suspenseful start.
After He’s Gone is a solid police procedural with an engaging protagonist. Following the investigation from Beth’s perspective as the family’s liaison officer is a different slant and it was interesting to get to know her on a personal level as well as a professional one, as she tries to keep the two separate. They do overlap however, causing her some problems. Beth is dedicated in her work and has good people skills, which help with the family/relationship side of the investigation.
The plot flows realistically with the steady progress I’d imagine a real police investigation would face. Beth initially felt she was being sidelined but soon realised her position as a supporting FLO gives her a different angle on the case and puts her in a position to suss out the family, as she tries to discover who Cameron Swift really was and uncover the motive for his murder. As the plot unfolds many questions are raised leading to unexpected answers and Beth isn’t one to hold back if she thinks something needs to be addressed. Secrets and lies are plentiful and are woven into the plot skilfully, leading to a surprise conclusion. A really good start to a new series.

It was good, after reading Book 2 in the series to now read Book 1!!!
I want to point out, as said re Book 2 this can be read as a stand alone as well as before, after or in the middle of Book 2 😃😃
I already loved Beth and this was maintained through this book, she is a really good ‘cop’ but just on the edge of risque sometimes and I love her manner and the way she investigates crime and like a dog with a bone will not give up
I also like how the ‘private life’ stories within the main story are kept intriguing but believeable and gently lead you into other areas of Beth’s life, also worth mentioning is the authors humanising of police procedure which can get bogged down in books but never does with Beth
So, the story, Cameron is gunned down outside his house, his partner witnesses this, she has 2 children...tragic.....as it is for the other partner with 2 children who sees the story on the news and contacts the police furious she hasn’t been informed!!
Who was Cameron really? Why was he murdered? Who is his real partner?
Beth works it out and all, of course, is not as seems
A really good exciting story, great characters and that same
welcoming feel to the book that this author excels in.....as said in my review of Book 2 it has left me wanting more!!!
If you are looking for a series then give this one a try and am sure you will love it as much as me

Although I read reviews that said the main character, Beth Chamberlain, was a strong character, I found her just the opposite. She's having an affair with her boss and keeping it from friends, relatives and coworkers. She seemed a peripheral part of the case until the last 25% of the book in which she just lucks into action. But it could be that nothing happened during the first half of the book and everything seemed to be be done off page by undeveloped team members. She was constantly unable to ask a question because of some occurrence or another. Supporting characters kind of flit in and out with minimal development. The whole book just seemed to be slow paced, little character development and not a lot of anything

When Cameron Swift is gunned down outside of his home early one morning, it is understandably devastating for his partner Monika and their young sons. But as the police begin to investigate the seemingly random crime, the life of the victim is exposed to bring about startling revelations that Monika cannot begin to fathom. Who is this man with whom she has shared her life for the past several years? And, more importantly, who is Sara Swift, the woman who claims to be his wife?
This is an intriguing premise with enough twists thrown in to make for a fresh take on a story that has been played out again and again. Recommended.

I really enjoy Jane Isaac’s writing and I was thrilled to be asked to read After He’s Gone for reviewing on the blog tour. It’s a book that is packed with secrets and it deals very well with the impact they have and the consequences on those involved.
DC Beth Chamberlain is a really great character. She is tenacious honest and unrelenting in her determination to do right by those that she is helping. I really liked reading about her and I look forward to more books in the future.
After He’s Gone reminded me almost of a tv drama, I could really imagine it being on screen because it reads like a UK crime drama. I don’t want to say anything about the plot. But it is tightly woven and thoroughly engaging.
If you’re familiar with Jane’s books, then you’ll love this one. And if you’ve never read one of her books, I definitely recommend After He’s Gone as a good starting point.

I am a sucker for a police procedural novel, this one has definitely not disappointed.
I have loved the main character, Beth Chamberlain who is a family liaison officer. She is a fantastic lead protagonist throughout this book.
I have not been able to put this book down. This is another new author for me and I am already a huge fan. I cannot wait to read more of Isaac's books.
This has definitely gripped me from the very beginning and I have found it utterly impossible to put down. You know you've found a wonderful author when you devour the book within hours.
This has a logical plot, which is highly addictive and perfect for anyone who likes crime thrillers and police procedurals.

The beginning is intense and shocking. It raises questions, when did this happen? Before the story yet to unfold? After? During?
It sets the scene for an intricately woven plot of danger, deceit and desire.
The characters play out their roles in an authentic way, the knowledge of police procedures is evident and makes that part of the story realistic and readable. The main theme of the story is the web of lies that one man lived, only revealed after his demise. The two families, the anger, anguish and anonymity they feel. Are they as ignorant as they seem? Do they know more? Are they in danger too?
Beth Chamberlain, as a new family liaison officer, brings a fresh perspective. She has her problems, some of which impinge on the investigation, but her empathy and intelligence make her role pivotal.
The suspense builds well, the plot has enough twists to make it page-turning, but plausible. An engaging story with significant psychological suspense played out against a well-written police procedural setting.

The story begins with being held at gun point! That got me straight away, nothing better than starting off with danger. Then I was taken back to the lead up to this point and to back to the beginning to speak. It was in the story that I met DC Beth Chamberlain and the team and her role as the Family Liaison Officer.
The author didn’t hang about starting this story. I do tend to worry when a story starts with a bang ( no pun intended, well maybe a little bit), can the author match the dramatic start and keep me interested ? Well maybe I worry too much as the author definitely had me hooked right the way through. It was caught within the story and followed the wonderful character that is Beth as she makes her way through the investigation.
Beth is a tenacious character, especially when something doesn’t quite sit right, she lets the information sit and mulls it over while some of her colleagues dismiss them as unimportant. I like this route as you get to realise more about her character. She also comes across as being a little bit intimidated by some of the other “brighter stars” in the team, and while I did get the impression that she is not seen as much by others she definitely made an impression on me.
The story is not just about the investigation, there are several others going on and around as well and these have been cleverly woven in and around the main one. The suspense that builds has been done very well indeed. There are enough devious little moments that caught me out as I was taken deeper in. And that is all I am saying about the plot.
This is a book that is paced well to the story and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I was pleased to see in the authors notes that another book will follow in the series later this year, it will be great to see how Beth is developed as a character and also to learn more about her. I would definitely recommend this to readers of crime, thriller and suspense books and who are looking to start a new series.
The author didn’t hang about starting this story. I do tend to worry when a story starts with a bang ( no pun intended, well maybe a little bit), can the author match the dramatic start and keep me interested ? Well maybe I worry too much as the author definitely had me hooked right the way through. It was caught within the story and followed the wonderful character that is Beth as she makes her way through the investigation.

I was so excited when I heard there was a new Jane Isaac book coming out but then I saw that it wasn’t a DI Will Jackman novel! Now I am a big fan of that fictional detective so wasn’t sure what to think when I realised he wasn’t in this book! But I do love Jane Isaacs writing so went in with an open mind to meet her new character, DC Beth Chamberlain who is a family liaison officer. She is sent in to support families who have been affected by crime but by being in their homes, she is also in the best place to investigate internally any suspicious behaviour from within. And she is about to become involved in a case where everyone has secrets and some of those secrets could be about to lead to some very disturbing revelations indeed!
I’m so pleased to be able to say that I LOVED DC Beth Chamberlain! She is a great character and I became more impressed by her attitude and personality the more I found out about her. She’s a strong minded and independent woman who’s bloody good at her job! Beth is one of those people that you definitely want there for you in times of crisis and with her calm manner and quick thinking she’s perfect in her role here. She attempts to keep her personal life separate from her professional career and with good reason you will come to realise.
The plot itself flowed perfectly as the murder was investigated at a realistically steady speed with the police working through the clues provided with good old fashioned investigative skills. This is a crime thriller that feels like a lifelike representation of the police procedures that it follows. I thoroughly enjoyed following the investigation into the murder of Cameron Swift and found it impossible to put this book down, always promising myself just one more chapter until I ended up finishing After He’s Gone in one sitting!

Jane Isaac is a new author to me, one that I kept meaning to try. I was drawn to the cover of "After He's Gone" by its air of mystery and suspense. What a cracking read!
The short snappy chapters kept me enticed with the thrilling plot. The characters were full bodied and there were more twists than a frozen Twirly Whirly!
A superb read which I hope will be the start to a fabulous series. I must read her previous books too as they sound just my kind of read too. Highly recommended.

Author Jane Isaac has a new fan in me. Having read one of her previous books, I was so excited to start this one. And it didn’t disappoint.
A man was shot in front of his home. His partner and kids were left devastated. The cops were called. Beth was the Family Liason Officer. Then came a shocking reveal of another family which led to the further investigation of the man’s secrets.
Jane Isaac is a terrific author, her way of writing emotions within a police procedural got to me. The investigation was top-notch. Beth excelled in showing her passion for the police work along with her caring for the victim’s family and her own. Her instincts were bang-on. She had some awkward moments in this where she was placed in difficult circumstances. I liked that she did the right thing.
Beth and people surrounding her were shown well. I loved the way the author had characterized her. The suspense was built up from the first chapter. I was quite delighted to know how wicked the victim was. The final reveal of the killer though unexpected but didn’t really come close to the suspense and intrigue that was imbibed in the story. I was expecting something so huge that I would crash.
Overall, it was a gripping story which kept me awake till 4am. One of my fun midnight reads, the first in the new year.

Having enjoyed previous police series’ by Jane Isaac, I knew I was going to be in for a quality story and I wasn’t let down.
This series features a new detective. DC Beth Chamberlain is a Family Liaison Officer sent to support the family of a murdered businessman, Cameron Swift.
The story starts with his murder. Gunned down on his driveway by a killer on a motorbike who leaves no clues behind, the police are mystified. It soon becomes apparent that Cameron led a secretive and complicated life, which the police have their work cut out trying to unravel and, as the FLO, Beth gets involved with supporting those closest to him whilst they try to come to terms with the fact that they knew so little about Cameron’s life. At the same she is constantly vigilant of anything she feels needs to be reported back to the team. I can imagine its not an easy role – on the one hand you’re there to support and help but on the other you’re not entirely trusted by those you’re meant to be helping.
Beth was an engaging character, apart from a needy sister (who caused her one or two complications). She wasn’t perfect by any means, as the story shows, and her inexperience led to foolish decisions but she was conscientious and genuinely wanted to help. It was different to see the effects and aftermath of a crime more from the perspective of the victim’s families, rather than just from a normal investigation POV.
This is an intriguing crime story, with one surprise after another, leading to a tense and suspenseful conclusion. The Other Woman is a very strong start to a new series and I am looking forward to seeing more of Beth’s character in the next book (which has already been published as Presumed Guilty but is being republished in March 2020 with Aria as For Better, For Worse.)

I really enjoyed meeting Beth Chamberlain, a Family Liaison Officer, and I'm looking forward to seeing her again. An excellent mystery, very well told. Review to follow shortly on For Winter Nights.

Finished this book in 2 days do I would say that it was a good one. The plot kept me interested right till the very end - a proper page turner. Plenty of twists to keep the reader interested. Don't want to spoil the storyline for anyone but I would recommend this title. Thank you to TBC and to the author for the chance to read this title in exchange for a honest review.

To be honest I was a bit miffed when I saw that the new Jane Isaac book had a new main character and not Will Jackman who is one of my favourite characters. I was seduced by the cover and jumped at the chance of an early copy. I was hooked in completely by the prologue and I think she has struck gold here and predict this will be a much loved series. The further I read there was definitely an urge to read quicker and quicker to find out exactly what was going on. Beth is a very likeable character with enough flaws to appear human. I feel a bit disloyal to Will for enjoying this so much but if he read it he would understand.

Cameron Swift, forty-six years old, a man with a wife, kids and a beautiful home leaves quietly one Sunday morning with his golf bag on his back ready to load up his car. But Cameron’s life comes to an unexpected and brutal end when he is ruthlessly cut down on his drive way, in a seemingly very targeted and cold-blooded manner.
DC Beth Chamberlain receives an early call from control room informing her of a shooting and to immediately come in to join forces with the newly formed homicide team for the case. Cameron Swift lived in a very exclusive estate in an area where shootings like this were extremely rare. The community of Collingtree Park would be horrified and concerned for their safety, but also this was going to attract the attention of the media, bringing with it the inevitable bank of journalists and news cameras.
With very little to go on initially, the team must pull out all the stops and unearth the truth behind what appears to be a very professional job. The killer escaped on a motorbike leaving no trace of their identity behind. Beth is appointed as Family Liaison Officer to work with Cameron’s family who are left behind traumatised and in deep shock. After He’s Gone is a police procedural but it is also a book that focuses in on family and relationships. Beth Chamberlain has a complicated personal life and is trying to keep it at a distance from her workplace but at times this proves to be challenging. As a reader, we are slowly fed snippets from her past and her present, leaving us wanting to know more when we turn the final page. Beth is a wonderfully likable lead character in this series. She is real, she is very personable and has a very generous heart, yet also is quite clearly very talented in her role on the force.
Jane Isaac has written a very solid opening book in a new series. I really like Beth Chamberlain and found myself rooting for her from the very beginning. As Beth digs deeper into the murder of Cameron Swift, we see how her understanding of other people and her ability to pick up on situations, leads her to unearthing very unexpected truths. After He’s Gone kept me guessing right to the end, as Jane Isaac sent me off in all sorts of tangents as I attempted to figure out the who and the why of Cameron Swift’s death.
A thoroughly enjoyable and gratifying read. Perfect for all who love what I loosely term a ‘good old-fashioned’ crime novel. There is a very human element to this book that I felt absolutely grounded it in reality and just added to the credibility of the plot-line.

Straight away Jane Isaac had my attention, being nosy by nature, I couldn't help but want to find out more about this murder. What seems like a straight forward killing, turns into something more complex than you can imagine.
There are so many angles to consider, that Beth and the investigation team had me wanting to find out more each time I read. Beth is determined to prove herself to her superiors whilst having to deal with turbulence in her personal life too.
Although a complicated case, I found this to be an easy book to read. The chapters flow from one to another and held my interested from start to finish.
A worthy read, that I thoroughly enjoyed.

After He's Gone opens with a terrifying prologue, shortly followed by a shocking first chapter guaranteed to get the heart rate up! From that point forward I was hooked and wanted to know absolutely everything that was happening to these normal sounding people and of course, why it was happening. Luckily we readers have the wonderful DC Beth Chamberlain on our side, persistently poking at the mysterious half-truths and secrets in an attempt to solve a somewhat bewildering case for Northampton Police Force. But the more she pokes, the more confusing things become. Can Beth manage to piece together the evidence before it's too late and the killer strikes again...
I really liked Beth. She's probably less angst-ridden than many of the detectives I normally read about but it's nice to have a break from my usual damaged souls, in a literary sense. Her secret 'friends with benefits' agreement with a senior officer gave her a bit of an edge, particularly as he's keen for more but Beth won't admit to how she feels. I'm not one for love'n'stuff in my crime novels but I can see this relationship bringing friction to a normally harmonious working relationship. I look forward to seeing where Isaac takes this storyline in future novels.
Would I recommend this book? Definitely. It's a great start to what promises to be a brilliant new crime series featuring Family Liaison Officer DC Beth Chamberlain. I found myself drawn into the story from the get-go, brilliantly written and skillfully plotted by a talented author. I managed to read After He's Gone in just over a day which is very quick for me. I can only agree with all of the other hugely complimentary reviews of this new series by Jane Isaac - it's got all her meticulous attention to detail and plotting, great characters and story that zips along.

The Other Woman by Jane Isaac
DC Beth Chamberlain #1
Mystery, murder and more in this story of a man murdered in cold blood leaving two women without a “partner” and four children without a father. Who killed Cameron and why? What did Monika and Sara have to do with it – if anything? How will the police go about uncovering why the murder took place? Will the murderer be caught? So many questions and as each clue was revealed I was drawn in further.
What I liked:
* Beth – she seemed focused, smart and dedicated to her job and family. She’s a good policewoman and capable of thinking on her feet and taking action when needed.
* The police team – being introduced to them I have a feeling I will like DCI Lee Freeman and Sergeant Nick Geary along with some others on the team
* Watching the police procedural aspects followed during the investigation
* The way the story unfolds – pace and plotting were well done
* Not knowing for sure who the bad guy was till near the end...even though I had read the end before the middle of the book
* That it made me think and care and hope for a good outcome for all involved in a messy situation
What I did not like:
* The bad guy – really seemed off mentally and totally irrational
* The situation I have a feeling Beth’s sister is getting into with the man she has chosen to spend time with
* The first murder victim – Cameron was not a man that I could like even though it seemed his partners and children probably did
* Being reminded again of how easily humans perpetrate evil against one another
* Having to say goodbye to the characters in the story and having to wait for book two of the series to find out what happens next

Having read Jane's previously novels and enjoyed getting to know Will Jackman I was surprise to see a new lead in this book but I have to say it worked brilliantly - I can't wait to read more about Beth and hey who knows, maybe she and Will can work together in the future :)
It is a simple yet clever story which unfolds gradually at first but then fast gathers momentum as you get drawn into the lives of Beth, Monika, Sara and of course, Cameron.
What appears to be a straight forward - if dramatic - murder, soon turns into a deep and murky glimpse into the life of Cameron Swift. His death has all the markers of a 'hit', but is it? Beth is a brave and feisty character who puts others first which makes her a truly wonderful heroine for what I hope will be the first in a new series.
In addition to a brilliants constructed whodunnit, the effort put into building Beth's back story is noteworthy on it's own. She is alive within these pages and finish the book really feeling as though you know her.
I love the cover too - really fresh and tells you at one glance that this is going to be ballsy female lead in a murder case - pretty impressive!
Not only is Jane Isaac a fabulous author but is also utterly lovely on Twitter. I'm sure she'd like to hear from you if you loved reading any of her books.

Having read and loved Jane Isaac's previous novels, I was thrilled to be offered a chance to read After He's Gone, featuring new main character Beth Chamberlain. Having read Jane's previously novels and enjoyed getting to know Will Jackman I was surprise to see a new lead in this book but I have to say it worked brilliantly - I can't wait to read more about Beth and hey who knows, maybe she and Will can work together in the future :)

DC Beth Chamberlain is tasked with being the Family Liaison Officer for the family, her first time as FLO. From the first chapters featuring her, I really liked her character, she's kind, hard-working and dedicated to alleviating the pain of bereaved families. She's terrified of using elevators...I empathize!
The case is a tricky one, as it progresses slowly there are some shocking developments that complicate matters to no end. Cameron Swift was not the man he seemed to be. Was his killing due to shady business dealings or were there murkier reasons?
This is the first Beth Chamberlain book and I hope there will be many more. I liked the chapters featuring her personal life and can't wait for further developments. Jane Isaac is one of my favorite authors, I have read all her books and they're all terrific. Many thanks for the chance to read this one! Highly recommended.
