OK SO I was looking forward to reading this manga the most out of all the other ones from season 4 because it looked like at first glance I was going to get a crapload of feels. DID I GET FEELS? UH. YEAH. Unfortunately at the same time, I'm unsatisfied with the way this story was written.
The good: this manga has a unique premise - instead of two characters working their way into being an eventual pair, the two characters Ruka (omega) and Taisei (alpha) are already a pair from the first page. However, being a pair doesn't mean it's going to be rainbows and unicorns and sparkles being flown straight into your eyeballs by fairies. I love how this story started out with this crude joke of "dick delivery" fucking out of no where from this uke who looks innocent asf but got a dirty mouth. This dialogue alone made me think, ok these guys obviously know each for a long ass time. Moving on from that, they obviously got problems. Taisei only sleeps with Ruka when Ruka is in heat. They're not the lovey dovey proclaim my love to you every 2 seconds kiss kiss fall in love while holding hands kinda couple. In fact, they're portrayed as not even being a couple and you're left with this question of how in the world did they get themselves into this situation? Did Taisei lose control and bite Ruka when they were younger? Was it something they both wanted but then it fell apart? SO MUCH POTENTIAL THIS HAD. Reminds me of the relationship with the CP in Romantic Joutou where the beta sleeps with the omega to relieve him of his heat, but this time it's with an actual pair.
My beef with this though is that, I'm not even entirely sure Kobayashi knew where she wanted to take this as she was working on each chapter. I went in thinking that Ruka had a one-sided love for Taisei, and Taisei cared about Ruka but didn't particular love him (or maybe he did but is keeping his feelings to himself), JUDGING from how Kobayashi depicted this character in the beginning. Ruka didn't want to hold Taisei back just for his convenience, and that's fair. What really got to me though is when Ruka had this "wonderful" idea to spell it out to Taisei to leave him the fuck alone by first inviting him over to have sex without even being in heat. Odd, different, and I was thinking Taisei would respond in a certain way but instead, his actual reaction to this and throughout was a total 180 from what I COULD gather of his personality from the beginning. He seemed like a completely different character. But that's fine too, I probably would have appreciated it if this new.... discovery of how energetically receptive he is of Ruka was laid out in the beginning as well.
I love their background story, they were sooo cute as kids. The parents being against them being a pair because of their age was realistic, I don't think any parents would want their child to have sex and get married in middle school (closest equivalent to being a pair in our world) - though being a pair would definitely help Ruka in the long run. Them running off and doing the deed anyways, hey. It happens. The rape from some random classmate who looks likes a copy pasta from a punk ass bully or rival of a shounen manga was....???? I'm not entirely sure if such a thing was even necessary in this story, but if Kobayashi wanted to throw in rape, using this as a means to rush the plot (serving as the catalyst for Ruka to break off with Taisei which leads us to why they're in this dysfunctional non-couple what to even call them situation) is distasteful and lazy.
Towards the end when pokemon wanna be master i wanna be the very best there ever was rapist with his punk ass comes back and... that entire scene with Ruka and him. Aggravating. Him asking for forgiveness was fine, I would have punched his eyes out, but whatever, the fact that he came forward wanting to apologize was different but welcoming compared to the other shit we read about in abo stories. But seriously though, WHY THIS. WHY does fucking Gary Oak's little brother (he reminds me of an anime character, BUT WHOOO) have to be THE catalyst to move the plot forward?? TWICE. AAAAHHH KOBAYASHI.
The art is okay and can be over the top sometimes (practically blinded by hearts during the sex scenes in the beginning lord have mercy why) but I don't care about art if the story is good; Taisei (once Kobayashi figured out what kind of seme he's going to be I guess) is super cute and a seme who ain't afraid to cry in front of people is a good seme indeed. There were times where I felt a tug in the kokoro like omff, that hurts. I came for feels, I got feels. Aside from some misgivings, I found myself still enjoying this, not LOVING it, but I liked it. Even though they became a pair so young, they had to hide from the public of this fact and it wasn't easy for Ruka to watch girls flirt with Taisei or Taisei being with other people and not him, and he started to feel jealous and angry, realizing that love isn't this picture-perfect world. Being a pair doesn't mean all your problems will magically disappear. I loved how Kobayashi portrayed Ruka's feelings during this scene; it was heart-wrenching and fantastic.
But even with all of that, I wasn't entirely sure why Ruka felt he couldn't be with Taisei despite knowing how much Taisei loves him back. This isn't new shit, Taisei's been feeling this way since their preschool days! It's something when both sides aren't exactly sure about the other's feelings and are trending on thin ice, but it's another ball game when both sides clearly knows how the other feels but one side wants to continuously throw grenades in front of them, fucking cockblocking their own life like, NO. DON'T COME CLOSER EVEN THOUGH I WANT YOU TOO.
Anyways, I'm rambling grrr. It's a good read. Nothing amazing. It's disappointing, but there's still some really good and cute things in here and once again, if you want feels, you came to the right place. These are my opinions so obviously others might think differently. Don't come to me after reading this, saying I THOUGHT THIS WAS WONDERFUL WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? Okay, good for you :O
SIGH. Until the next time ~
