Saints & Strangers cozy mystery series: Book 1: A Dead End Book 2: The Deep End Book 3: The Bitter End
Keeley Bates is the author of humorous women's fiction. She published her first work, Hostel Takeover, in September 2011 and her next novel, The Mother Load, is expected in June 2012.
Another great book! At first I was a little disappointed in how the story began. PLEASE DO NOT STOP READING if it’s not what you are expecting. Trust me it gets good! The twist in storytelling makes this a great read. You get to see the characters develop. There are a lot of new people introduced that will keep you guessing who is responsible for the crimes. Every time a new character was introduced I kept saying, “He/she did it.” Again, I felt like I was watching a movie. I would suggest this book (series) to anyone who enjoys a lighthearted mystery.
The plot of this is almost entirely based off of Sense and Sensibility. It honestly felt like I was reading really bad, juvenile FanFiction. The first book was fun, but this one dragged. I don’t think the author realizes what her strengths are in this series: actress/amateur sleuth Kit, her high society mother, sassy elderly neighbors, and the unlikely society of Pilgrim descendants. I’m reading the book for those reasons and not to read bad Sense and Sensibility FanFiction. The characters of Charlotte and Rebecca are fine as side kicks but should not take over an entire book. I hope the third book is better.
This book I had the most trouble with out of all 3. I was easily able to guess at least the involvement of the final culprit maybe about half way through the book which is the only thing that made it plausible.
While Romeo and Kit's romance is tip toeing very slowly, the two sisters Rebecca and Charlotte seem to have gone on one date with their respective beau's and they professed undying love for the girls at the end(who also pined a lot for them throughout the book). I dont understand that at all.
Overall the characters were still enjoyable enough that I read the third book.
I adore the first book in the series. The pacing is great, I laugh almost all the way through, and the characters are well balanced. This one lacked almost all of that, which is disappointing. It was also boringly predictable and felt too sappy. I appreciate the effort and will buy the next one in hopes of it being closer to the first one in terms of humour, pacing, and non-Hallmark style sentiment.
A good story that I would rate higher for the likable characters and plot line if it was just more developed. This is really more of a novella at 120 pages and just doesn’t have the depth that would make it even more enjoyable. I wasn’t planning to finish the series, but I had a gift card so I went ahead and purchased both of them anyway. It does make for a good summer reading.
I tumbled to the killer fairly early, but had fun seeing the story unfold. Got to know some of the characters much better and with more surprises. A quick read, and I hope there is more than just one more book in the series !
This is the second book in this series by Annabelle Chase. The first one was great, and thus one did not disappoint, either. If you like a good puzzle, well-defined characters, and a but of humor, you will enjoy this book. I recommend it.
This was a page turner to the VERY end!! I just LOVED how the characters jumped out at you on the page as if you were REALLY there with them!! Thanks SO much for sharing your talent!!
Another good story. Discovering Keeley Bates (Annabel Chase) is the best thing I've done this year. Kit plays less of a part in this one than the first but still she manages to help Romeo catch the bad guy.
Didn’t like this one quite as much as the first. Besides the murder, it was all about boyfriends and their many girlfriends and a bit hard for me to follow as I read bits and pieces of it while I had a lot going on.
Lots of intrigue but not much is relatable as they're murdering each other for huge fortunes. There are three tame relationships here but sadly, none are explored deeply. A quick cozy read with an excellent crazy lawn bowling breakfast scene.
Loved this book!! Didn't see the ending coming at all!! Looking forward to reading the next installment!!! Hopefully there will be more than the three!!
I read all three in one go and Kit & Romeo are keeping me very engaged. I loved the mystery and the depth to Kit and other characters! Bring on more...
Sorry to be a party-pooper but this one did not hold my attention. Kit is a former TV star returned to her home town, where her mother is a wealthy snob, withholding Kit's trust fund because she isn't behaving the way her mother wants her to. (Do wealthy women really do that sort of thing?). Then Kit tries to emulate the cop she played on the TV show and solve the murder if her friend's despised step-mother. Who did it and why was obvious to me from the start and I found the entire thing shallow. I know it's supposed to be chick-lit. I guess I'm lit than chick these days.
