Knowing the Bible

1–3 John: A 12-Week Study

Rate this book

The Knowing the Bible series is a resource designed to help Bible readers better understand and apply God’s Word. These 12-week studies lead participants through books of the Bible and are made up of four basic components: (1) reflection questions help readers engage the text at a deeper level; (2) “Gospel Glimpses” highlight the gospel of grace throughout the book; (3) “Whole-Bible Connections” show how any given passage connects to the Bible’s overarching story of redemption, culminating in Christ; and (4) “Theological Soundings” identify how historic orthodox doctrines are taught or reinforced throughout Scripture. With contributions from an array of influential pastors and church leaders, these gospel-centered studies will help Christians see and cherish the message of God’s grace on every page of the Bible.

The letters of John have much to say about love and obedience in the Christian life. The apostle John wanted his readers to understand that a transformed life comes from knowing the love of God through Jesus Christ. Over the course of 12 weeks, this study will help readers understand John's practical wisdom regarding truly following Jesus and walking according to his commandments—a much-needed message for our world today.

This study was not my favorite I've done through this series. Given that John 1-3 are not long books, I sometimes felt like this should have been a 6 week study rather than 12. Nevertheless I am thankful for the time spent in these books that overall, proclaim the importance of Christ's love and how we should strive to adopt that same love.

Good short study of 1-3 John. Too question heavy, and many of the questions were just “copy the text” responses, rather than life applications. I’m sure some people may like this kind of study, but our group often ended up doing more concept discussion than actual question and answer!

A bit too rudimentary, and not overly helpful as a guide for leading Bible Studies. You could certain do worse, but I had high hopes because of the series that it is a part of.

Really good deep dive into John’s letters, but definitely didn’t need to be 12 weeks!
