A woman's touch is needed.Pen's boss, William Pinkerton, thinks he has given her the perfect cover. She is to play the part of an eccentric spirit medium, eager to experience the purported ghostly manifestations. Unfortunately, her cover will not remain intact for long, and there are those behind the scenes who are desperate to keep the secrets of Schroon Lake Inn from coming to light. Will Pen's discoveries prove fatal? She would have to be truly clairvoyant to know....
I enjoyed this novella very much. Tightly written, good research, good character development. Penelope Hamilton is a smart, capable heroine. I'll be reading more from this author.
the culmination of the mystery happened quite abruptly. i prefer for solutions to be revealed more slowly. but i also didn't see the truth coming from a mile away. well done.
I've just completed both of the stories in this series. The stories, while brief, are well written, the mystery is constructed in a solid manner and the setting is interesting,. I also found Pen a good heroine. These stories are a good way to spend an afternoon.
Pinkerton agent Mrs Penelope Hamilton Wynch is sent to Schroon Lake Inn to solve the mystery of the stolen jewellery and an explanation to the ghostly sightings. An enjoyable story - a good fun read.
It was okay. Well done in that I had no idea this was book 2 until I came to review. Still, I didn't make enough of a connection with the characters to continue the series.
The heroine, Penelope Hamilton Wynch, is one of the rare Pinkerton agents in 1886. She is sent to the Adirondacks to investigate ghostly sightings and the not so ghostly theft of expensive jewelry. Her journey requires trains and a boat as well as a carriage. In her investigation she discovers not only the solutions to the mysteries but also an unlikely ally. A fun light read just about right for the length.
I love K. B. Owen's writing and this is no exception. My wish is for her to have a long, prolific, and rapidly executed career so I will have more of her work to read.
